  • Amazon Snags Henry Cavill to Lead ‘Warhammer 40,000’

Amazon Snags Henry Cavill to Lead ‘Warhammer 40,000’

Henry Cavill‘s post-Superman/post-Watcher career has already begun being defined. According to THR, Cavill is set to star and produce an adaptation of Warhammer 40,000 for Amazon.

Warhammer 40,000 is a widely popular tabletop war game set 40,000 years into a pretty crazy future where humanity finds itself at war with aliens and mutants across the universe. Cavill has made it known in the past that he loves the game and has teased fans about his potential involvement, including recently in an interview with The Nerdist where he declared his favorite army and later name-dropped a character from the game that fans have been hoping he’d play: The Emperor of Mankind.

As THR points out, the deal has not been sealed quite yet, though the potential for Warhammer 40,000 to become a multi-season sci-fi series is a strong selling point for Amazon.

  • Henry Cavill Won’t Return to ‘The Witcher’ Even After Losing Superman Role

Henry Cavill Won’t Return to ‘The Witcher’ Even After Losing Superman Role

Just yesterday, we’ve been hit with some depressing news as just as Henry Cavill finally got a chance to return in the role of Superman one more time in Black Adam, it seems DC Studios has decided to move forward without him after all. He seemingly even left his role of Gerald of Rivia from Netflix’s The Witcher. Just as he lost one role, many hoped this would mean he’d get a chance to return to the franchise that is near-and-dear to his heart. Yet, it seems that won’t be the case either.

Variety has shared that Cavill won’t return to The Witcher even as the fan demand has spiked since he moved on from Superman. Season 4 is still moving forward with Liam Hemsworth in the title role that Cavill held for the first three. Of course, the reception of him leaving the series was not met with welcome arms by the community, especially after recent reports that the writing staff openly mocked the original source material. Add them moving away from the original source material, fans are peeved even as the series remains a strong Netflix Original.

Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has denied the recent allegations made by former writer Beau DeMayo, but there still has been some doubt. It’ll be interesting to see if the series can remain its viewership with the new lead. If they don’t manage to pull in their audience, they may have to reconsider their plans for the franchise moving forward especially now as the spinoff Blood Origin is about to release.

  • ‘Shazam’ Star Joins Disney+’s ‘Spiderwick Chronicles’

‘Shazam’ Star Joins Disney+’s ‘Spiderwick Chronicles’

It looks like Disney+ has nabbed an up-and-coming star for its adaptation of the Spiderwick Chronicles. In a new report from Variety, they reveal that Shazam star Jack Dylan Grazer has joined the cast for the upcoming series. It seems he won’t be appearing personally though, as he’ll be voicing the character of Thimbletack, a boggart that lives withint he Spiderwick Estate’s walls. He described to be “hundreds of years old, Thimbletack is still a teenager amongst his kind, a mischief-maker with an explosive temper. He could be a great help to the Grace children…if only he could learn to control his own larger than life emotions.”

He joins an already strong cast that includes Lyon Daniels, Noah Cottrell, Joy Bryant, Christian Slater, and Mychala Lee. Paramount Television is producing the series alongside 20th Television with Aron Eli Coleite set as its showrunner. Kat Coiro is currently attached to direct the first two episodes but it’s unclear who is working on the rest. It’ll adapt the popular book series by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black.

We’re excited to see what they do with this adaptation and Disney+ has been quite clever in expanding its young adult offering. This series joines Percy Jackson as one of their many adaptations of classic children/young adult stories. So, they may be building their own market similar to how Netflix has been quite focused on bringing anime into live-action (somewhat desperately at times). So, we’ll see if they manage to pull it off and create their next key market moving forward.

  • Warner Bros. Discovery to License Canceled HBO Max Shows Like ‘Westworld’

Warner Bros. Discovery to License Canceled HBO Max Shows Like ‘Westworld’

HBO Max shocked fans everywhere when it canceled Westworld after four seasons. The series, thought to be one of HBO Max’s biggest series, was canceled in November. At the time, it was unclear exactly why the show was canned, especially as it was rumored not to be over budgetary reasons. However, it looks like Westworld – along with other canceled titles – will have a chance at a new life.

It was revealed on Wednesday that Warner Bros. Discovery was seeking to license some of its canceled and pulled programming to third-party free ad-supported television channels. The move comes as HBO Max readies to remove titles like Westworld, The Nevers, Raised by Wolves, FBoy Island, Legendary and The Time Traveler’s Wife from the service.

In a statement released to the press, Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy celebrated the possibility of getting their series in front of new audiences. “We are incredibly proud of ‘Westworld’ and the remarkable work of our cast and crew. We are excited to have the opportunity to welcome a whole new audience to our show.”

Shows produced by Warner Bros. will be easier to license, while other projects like Gordita Chronicles and Love Life, which hail from Sony Pictures Television and Lionsgate Television, respectively, will prove to be a bit more complicated in the dealmaking process as those studios will have say over the negotiation process of any potential deals.

  • Netflix Canceled ‘Warrior Nun’

    Netflix Canceled ‘Warrior Nun’

A month after Season 2 debuted on Netflix, the streaming giant has opted not to renew Warrior Nun for a third season. The news was first announced by Deadline, with the outlet noting that the series saw a decline in viewership in its second outing.

Season 2 of Warrior Nun was in Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 for three weeks, with the series peaking at the fifth spot. The series had a rather passionate fanbase, must like First Kill, but the fanbase failed to secure strong enough ratings to be renewed again. The move comes after Netflix has taken to evaluating its titles more closely – comparing viewership against costs for all renewal decisions.

The series was based on the manga title, Warrior Nun Areala, and hailed from showrunner Simon Barry. He tweeted the news out on Tuesday, making sure to thank the fans for their support. “I’ve just found out that @Netflix will not be renewing #WarriorNun,” he tweeted. “My sincere appreciation to all the fans who worked so hard to bring awareness to this series, and for the love you showed me, the cast and the whole production team. It was a privilege to be a part of this.”

The series revolves around 19-year-old Ava Silva, played by Alba Baptista, who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life thanks to a divine artifact embedded in her back. She soon finds that she has joined an ancient order that is meant to fight demons on Earth, all while forces from Heaven and Hell seek to control her. Kristina Tonteri-Young, Lorena Andrea, Tristán Ulloa, Thekla Reuten, Sylvia De Fanti and William Miller starred alongside Baptista.

Both seasons of Warrior Nun are now streaming on Netflix.

  • HBO Max Reverses Season 2 Renewal for ‘Minx’ as Production Wraps

HBO Max Reverses Season 2 Renewal for ‘Minx’ as Production Wraps

HBO Max is starting to lose trust in its creators, as another project has swiftly been canceled. The twist this time around: it was already renewed for a second season and was about to wrap production. Yes, HBO Max has cancelled Minx just as it’s finishing up production as another cost-cutting measure on the same level as what they pulled with Batgirl not too long ago. That’s not all, as the first season is also going to lose its home on the service and producer Lionsgate Television seemingly shopping it to other outlets, who shared the following statement:

We have enjoyed a good partnership with HBO Max and are working closely to find a new opportunity for ‘Minx,’ so current, and new viewers, can continue this journey with us.

The series starred Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson in 1970s Los Angeles, as they start the first erotic magazine for woman. It was a critical darling in its first season with a 97% approval on Rotten Tomatoes. Ellen Rapoport worked ont he project as its showrunner and its future strongly depends on if Lionsgate television can find a new home for it. Most of the second season is already filmed. So, perhaps Hulu or Netfli are interested in adding a quick project to their streaming service. HBO Max, on the other hand, is slowly burning too many bridges as CEO David Zaslav might push the streaming service into a direction no one is interested in joining.

  • The Sunday Paper—December 11, 2022

    The Sunday Paper—December 11, 2022

This week the news fell into an alternate reality where DC is making all of the headlines. A huge report pointed to several shakeups in the newly-formed DC Studios. The report indicated that not only did they pass on Patty Jenkins‘ third Wonder Woman film, but also won’t move forward with a Black Adam sequel; even as Dwayne Johnsondesperately crunches the numbers to prove it’s a success. The biggest shock was also the fact that Henry Cavill may have returned briefly as Superman but is unlikely to do so once againThe upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom may be the last we see Jason Momoa in the role, though news coming out of that film’s test screening will disappoint both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton Batman fans apparently.

For his part, co-CEO James Gunn took to Twitter to vaguely half-confirm the report. Though it is probably safe to say that even the top of the totem pole does not have all the answers. While the studio’s“lack of communication to talent reps and content creators” is reportedly “creating a riot”, Gunn did take the time to confirm to fans on Twitter that the character of Superman is a big priority for DC Studios going forward.

In Marvel Studios news, we’ve gotten a couple of potentially big rumors about Avengers: The Kang Dynasty this week, including who the first Avengers to fall to Kang might be and a very interesting potential ally in the fight against the Big Bad. In the spirit of the first-parters to major MCU crossover events, we also saw some interesting concept art of a character mash-up between Iron Man and Doctor Strange that was cut from Avengers: Infinity War

This week, we learned that actresses Margarita Levieva and Sandrine Holt have joined Daredevil: Born Again in major roles. While the roles are not confirmed, there is a chance Holt could be portraying Tyger Tiger, a character with more links to Madripoor than Hell’s Kitchen, but could tie together some criminal enterprises.

As Black Panther: Wakanda Forever remains in theaters, we keep learning interesting tidbits. Michael B. Jordan opened up about what it took to keep Killmonger’s return in the film a surprise, and new concept art reveals alternative Namor designs. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on the near-ish horizon, we speculate which characters might meet their untimely fate in the film which is promised to be an emotional last outing for the team.  Whether or not there will be more adventures for a new iteration of the team is a decision that Marvel Studios One Above All, Kevin Feige, and his trusted Parliament have to make but in-universe, Guardians or not, the galaxy still needs heroes—and we have just the suggestion.

In the gaming world, it appears Marvel’s Avengers video game experiment is coming to an end. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix, Marvel’s Avengers was an ambitious attempt at launching Marvel’s biggest superhero brand in the digital marketplace. Marvel’s Avengers will reportedly “sunset” in 2023 with support for the game and new content slowly ceasing to exist.
