‘Y: The Last Man’ gets canceled but might find a new home

FX’s Y: The Last Man, the adaptation of the iconic comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra got canceled before its first season came to an end. Showrunner Eliza Clark announced it through her Twitter account, all while maintaining hope that this wouldn’t be the end of it. Just a couple of days later a rumor emerged that the show might find its next home at HBO Max, something that, in a way, would bring the show back under the Warner Bros. umbrella, as the source material was published through DC’s Vertigo imprint.

Marvel Studios reshuffles upcoming theatrical release dates

Marvel Studios, hopefully for the final time, decided to push back a few of its upcoming theatrical releases. Every movie starting with Thor: Love and Thunder was moved forward by a few months, with a couple of the previously announced 2023 dates removed altogether from the schedule. Kevin Feige referred to these changes as being due to “production shifts and changes” and since Marvel has several slots at their disposal it’s something that can easily be decided upon.

Harry Styles joins the MCU

Variety senior writer Matt Donnelly confirmed that Harry Styles had joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe on a viral tweet posted the night of the Eternals World Premiere. Styles is said to be playing Eros, the brother of the Mad Titan Thanos on a post-credit scene in the upcoming MCU feature. It came as a surprise to most that someone working for a major trade could so carelessly spoil such an important introduction, depriving fans of the surprise they would surely get at the end of their first Eternals viewing.

Thanagarians to appear in new CW series ‘Naomi’

Naomi seems to be adapting the Raanian / Thanagar War plotline from the comics. A recent clip from Naomi has made its way onto the internet giving us our very first look at Alexander Wraith as Dee, the mysterious mechanic in town who Naomi believes is holding a secret the could solve the mystery of her origin. Dee is a Thanagarian war deserter, who planned to run from the conflict with his wife who didn’t make it to earth. Naomi’s adoptive father is the one who came to earth in search of Dee but ended up falling in love and staying on Earth.

Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ continues its meteoric rise

After just four weeks in release, Netflix’s Korean drama Squid Game pulled in a stunning 142 million views by member households globally. The numbers were released by Netflix on Tuesday as part of its third-quarter earnings report in a letter to its investors. “A mind-boggling 142m member households globally have chosen to watch the title in its first four weeks. The breadth of Squid Game’s popularity is truly amazing,” the letter read.

‘World War Hulk” project in development at Marvel Studos

It’s been thoroughly reported that Mark Ruffalo has, over the years, often pitched Hulk solo storylines to Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige. Even though World War Hulk probably won’t turn out to be a Hulk solo outing, you can’t get more Hulk-centric than this. Fans rejoiced at the prospect of bringing the iconic comic storyline to the big screen where the MCU will have to deal with the implications of such a world-altering event.

Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ might get its expected sequel

Dune: Part One is already being described and one of the biggest cinematic achievements of the past decade. Many have left theaters clamoring for the studio to deliver the sequel, as the future of the franchise seems brighter than ever before. Following the massive positive reaction to part one of director Denis Villeneuve‘s passion project, WarnerMedia Studios CEO seemingly confirmed that plans for a ‘Dune’ sequel are already being put into place.

Anakin Skywalker returns. Again.

After confirmation that Hayden Christensen would return to the Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader role in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, a trade report announced that he would also make an appearance in the upcoming The Mandalorian spin-off, Ahsoka. Star Wars continues to move forward while leaning on a number of characters from its past, from Anakin to Kenobi and Boba Fett.

FX Cancels ‘Y: THE LAST MAN’ After One Season

Here’s a rather surprising turn of events, as FX on Hulu has decided not to move forward with its newest show Y: The Last Man. The adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra‘s Vertigo storyline was in development hell for quite some time. It finally was able to premiere this September with Eliza Clark as showrunner. Sadly, she took to Twitter to announce that the series will not move forward. However, she has pointed out that they are actively looking for a new home to keep the team that worked on the post-apocalypse series together.

Actress Amber Tamblyn also took to Twitter to share her hope on finding a new home for the series with the hashtag #YLivesOn.

The series cancellation also means it won’t be available for European Disney+ subscribers, as it was also made available through their Star branding. Sadly, we have no insight on why they moved on the show after its premiere episode, but they might’ve not gotten the numbers they were hoping for given the necessary budget to keep this series going.

Of course, when we talk about revivals, Netflix commonly becomes the first new home for most shows due to their history. Lucifer just recently managed to finish its run on the streaming service after getting cancelled by Fox after its third season ended. Of course, there are other options, but it’ll be interesting to see if there are developments due to the series’ overall reception by fans and viewers.

‘Y: The Last Man’’s Turbulent Journey to FX

After what seems like an eternity, the Y: The Last Man trailer finally got released. With a little over a month to go before its September 13th premiere on FX, it feels like a good time to go back and remember just how difficult it was bringing the Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra iconic comic series to the small screen. In 2015, the series was announced to enter development over at FX. Since, the show has not only gone through different showrunners, a different main cast, but also a different title. From just the initial Y, it has since moved back to the source material’s original title, Y: The Last Man.

Michael Green (Smallville, Heroes, American Gods) was once slated to serve as showrunner, and was co-writing the pilot with Brian K. Vaughan., After working on the show for four years, he left the production in 2019 following “creative differences” being replaced by Eliza Clark (Extant, Animal Kingdom). With principal photography for the pilot taking place in 2018, it’s perhaps fair to assume that, following the changes to the leadership behind the show, we’ll be getting little to no footage of that period to show up in the final product.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filming got postponed to later 2020. It only concluded last month, July 2021. Around the time filming began, it was also announced that the show would feature an almost entirely different cast from the one initially announced in 2018. Barry Keoghan (Eternals), Diane Lane, Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later), Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel), Juliana Canfield, Marin Ireland, Amber Tamblyn, and Timothy Hutton were all set to star in the show, but perhaps due to delays and the way the approach towards the show evolved, some ended up getting replaced. Ashley Romans and Olivia Thirlby (Dredd) stepped into the roles which initially belonged to Lynch and Poots. Ben Schnetzer replaced Keoghan as Yorick Brown, the series lead. Paul Gross also joined the show at a later stage as Hutton, another of the big names from the original cast list, left following a restructuring surrounding his role.

Getting the show off the ground was obviously an extremely turbulent affair, something that might probably end up hurting the series’ quality. But it’s rather poetic if a show that focuses on a global cataclysmic event, that got postponed due to a global pandemic, somehow found redemption to its lackluster development story in a series that does justice to the brilliant, Eisner Award-winning comic series it’s based upon.

As stated above, the show focuses on the aftermath of a cataclysmic event that ends up killing every single mammal on planet earth with a Y chromosome. In layman’s terms, only females survived. Enter Yorick Brown, who mysteriously manages to survive with no idea of how that came to be. Alongside Ampersand, his pet monkey, he becomes involved in a world of governmental espionage and international intrigue. All of this with the backdrop of humanity possibly being on the verge of extinction for simply not being able to reproduce. We’re led in a globetrotting adventure, across multiple continents as Yorick, the Last Man, fights not only for his own future but also for his race. It is set to premiere on September 13th, 2021, on FX.

Closer Look at FX’s ‘Y: THE LAST MAN’s Yorick Brown Released

Just a few days after getting an official premiere date for the Y: The Last Man adaptation, we now got our first look at the series lead, Yorick Brown. It was shared by series producer Eliza Clark to showcase a somewhat iconic shot taken straight from the comics. He is even holding his Ampersand’s, his pet monkey, carrier. When we find Yorick donning this look, at the beginning of the series, he’s on his way to Washington DC, looking for his mother, Representative Brown. He keeps his identity hidden since being the last representative of the male gender would be something that would draw a lot of attention to himself. A plan that, as most plans in post-apocalyptic times go, doesn’t really hold up for long.

Yorick’s true identity is rapidly revealed, in what proves as the catalyst for his globe-trotting adventures, looking for a cure that would guarantee a future for the human race. Moved by his own self-interest of traveling to Australia, to meet up with this girlfriend who was there conducting research when the plague hit, instead of going in search of a Boston geneticist who could study him and possibly discover the reasons behind his survival, Yorick must navigate a world where he is no longer seen as a person, but a means to an end.

Warcraft’s Ben Schnetzer is playing the titular character of Yorick with Diane Lane portraying his mother, Congresswoman Jennifer Brown, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The mainly female cast will also feature Ashley Romans, Diana Bang, as well as Dredd‘s Olivia Thirlby. It will premiere on September 13th, 2021, on FX.

Its storyline focuses on the aftermath of a cataclysmic event that ends up killing every single mammal on planet earth with a Y chromosome. In layman’s terms, only females survived.
