Director Julius Onah on New Challenges Facing Sam Wilson in ‘Captain America: New World Order’

Captain America: New World Order was among the biggest MCU noisemakers at D23 Expo 2022. Director Julius Onah was officially introduced alongside star Anthony Mackie, whose journey in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier ended with him taking on the mantle of Captain America. Mackie was joined on stage by fellow The Falcon and The Winter Soldier cast members Danny Ramirez, who is returning as Joaquin Torres, and Carl Lumbly, who stole the show as Isaiah Bradley, newcomer Shira Haas, who will play Sabra, and D23’s biggest surprise, Tim Blake Nelson, who is returning as Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader, after a 14-year hiatus.

While the direction of the film is still unknown, the return of Samuel Sterns certainly threatens to throw a major curveball at Sam Wilson just as he begins to spread his wings as Captain America. In an interview with Phase Zero, Onah talked about how Sam’s new title will also come with a change in responsibilities.

He is in a new position. Stepping up to be the leader as Captain America is going to be a new set of challenges for him. And in this story, a big part of his journey is how do you define that leadership? That’s the thing that he hasn’t had to deal with just yet. As the Falcon, he was always there supporting the rest of the team, but now he’s the man leading the team and I think that’s going to be a really exciting journey to go on with him.

    Julius Onah

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier saw Sam come to terms with what picking up the shield and becoming Captain America would mean after initially struggling with the legacy of not only his friend, Steve Rogers but the hidden history of the Super Soldier program. Interestingly enough, Sterns represents another branch of that same legacy with his connections to Bruce Banner and Emil Blonsky, both of whom were dosed with Super Soldier Serum. Whether or not that connection is drawn on remains to be seen, but Sterns’ superior intellect is sure to provide its own set of challenges either way. How Sam will choose to handle them as the Star-Spangled Man with a Plan that everyone looks to will ultimately begin to define his time as Captain America.

Captain America: New World Order will hit theaters May 3rd, 2024.

  • D23: Marvel Studios Confirms Identity of Two Major ‘Secret Invasion’ Characters

D23: Marvel Studios Confirms Identity of Two Major ‘Secret Invasion’ Characters

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney Plus streaming series Secret Invasion is all about..secrets. And for quite some time, the studio kept some major secrets about the identities of the characters played by several members of the cast. Coming out of D23, the first trailer for the series featured looks at several of those characters and later, in an official press release, Marvel gave up SOME of the secrets about who is playing who.

According to the official release, Olivia Colman will debut as Special Agent Sonya Falsworth and Kingsley Ben-Adir as Rebel Skrull leader Gravik. The Falsworth name has quite a legacy in Marvel Comics as members of the family have served as Union Jack. While Sonya seems to be a character newly created just for the MCU, it’s possible she’ll have a connection to the Union Jack name and be an ancestor of James Montgomery Falsworth, who served alongside Captain America in WWII as a Howling Commando.

Ben-Adir’s Gravik seems to be an entirely new character, though a Skrull named Granok did exist in the comics and was a bit of a radical, as it seems is Gravik. Whatever the case, Ben-Adir’s character has a long history with Mendelsohn’s Talos, though exactly what the nature of their relationships is/was, remains to be seen.

Secret Invasion is set to stream on Disney Plus early in 2023.

  • D23: ‘Werewolf By Night’ Star Calls the Special “Genuinely Unique to the MCU”

D23: ‘Werewolf By Night’ Star Calls the Special “Genuinely Unique to the MCU”

Marvel Studios unveiled the first trailer for their upcoming Halloween Special, Werewolf By Night, at D23 Expo in Anaheim. The black and white trailer for the special, directed by Michael Giacchino, captivated the D23 audience with its pulpy, grindhouse feel, something Giacchino said he worked hard to achieve as an homage to classic 1930s and 1940s horror films.

Werewolf By Night stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Laura Donnelly joined Giacchino in Anaheim to discuss the project. Donnelly, who plays Marvel Comics monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone, was heavily featured in the trailer, which set up the premise of a group of monster hunters coming together after the passing of Elsa’s father, Ulysses, for a hunt. Following the trailer premiere, Donnelly spoke with Deadline in the D23 press line, giving some insight into the project.

I think that we can expect something that is genuinely scary and really thrilling, but also something that has a really beautiful heart to it. It’s a really human story. And I think that it is genuinely unique in the MCU.

    Laura Connelly

Given what fans have seen of the project to this point, it’s clear that Donnelly’s comments on the uniqueness of the project are on point. Giacchino certainly reached his goal of paying homage to classic horror films like The Wolf Man. Now it remains to be seen how fans of the MCU take to the pulpy project when it streams on October 7th.

  • D23: ‘Thunderbolt’ Line-Up Revealed, Returning ‘Black Widow’ Cast, Bucky, and More

D23: ‘Thunderbolt’ Line-Up Revealed, Returning ‘Black Widow’ Cast, Bucky, and More

Fans at D23 Expo 2022 were treated to some major reveals as part of Marvel Studios’ Showcase. Among the biggest surprises of the day was the introduction of the team that will make up the Thunderbolts when the film hits theaters on July 26th, 2024.

Astute fans have seen the team coming together over the course of the past couple of years as Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ Val recruited Yelena Belova and John Walker to her cause and now, Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige has revealed the rest of the Thunderbolts roster during D23 with the big surprise that Bucky is also joining the unlikely crew.

    Red Guardian

David Harbour’s Alexi Shostakov, who first appeared in Black Widow, returns for Thunderbolts to work alongside his daughter, Yelena. Fans loved the boisterous character and both Harbour and Feige have teased his return.

    Taskmaster

Another character making the jump from Black Widow, Antonia Dreykov, aka Taskmaster, will bring her very unique abilities to the team. Controlled by her vile and sleepy father, Taskmaster was freed when Natasha Romanoff broke a vial of Red Dust near her face during their confrontation after the destruction of the new Red Room Academy. Taskmaster, along with Alexi, Melina, Yelena and the dozens of newly liberated Widows all escaped together to parts unknown at the conclusion of Black Widow.

    Ghost

One of the MCU’s most underrated protagonists, Ava Starr rounds out the roster. In the comics, Ghost worked on several iterations of the Thunderbolts, making her a natural addition to the MCU’s roster. Ghost hasn’t been seen since 2018’s Ant-Man and The Wasp, but actress Hannah John-Kamen has teased her return to the role.

  • RUMOR: Marvel Studios Finds Its Sue Storm in Award-Winning Actress Jodie Comer

RUMOR: Marvel Studios Finds Its Sue Storm in Award-Winning Actress Jodie Comer

As D23 Expo 2022 approaches, a monster rumor has emerged suggesting that Marvel Studios has found their Susan Storm. According to YouTuber John Campea, Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Award-winning actress Jodie Comer will be announced as Sue Storm this weekend.

So one of the little pieces of whispering I started to hear about two months ago. And I didn’t give alot to it. I didn’t give alot of credence to it in my own head. It was regarding Fantastic Four, and it was Free Guy’s Jodie Comer… That she’s going to be our Sue Storm. And she’s going to be announced as Sue Storm at D23.

    Jodie Comer

Comer has been ascending for the past several years with roles in Help and Killing Eve garnering nominations and awards. The actress recently starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy and Disney does love corporate synergy, so it’s sensible and possible that they have chosen to work with Comer again, this time on what must be one of Hollywood’s most coveted leading roles.

Now that Marvel Studios has found a director for Fantastic Four in Matt Shakman, all eyes are on the cast with D23 Expo presenting an excellent opportunity for Marvel Studios to make a big splash with a major announcement. If Comer is the pick for Storm, her age (29) might provide fans with a range not only for her husband, Reed Richards, but also her younger brother, Johnny Storm. Sue has often been portrayed as about a decade younger than Reed and eight years older than Johnny. Given Comer could pull off a Sue anywhere in her twenties, it would be possible for Johnny to be close in age to Peter Parker, who recently got his high school GED after dropping out of his senior year. Fans of the comics will know the two have been friends throughout the years, making the age of Johnny in the MCU something of interest.

Fantastic Four is set to hit theaters on November 8, 2024.

  • The Hypothetical 2025 Marvel Studios Release Calendar, V1

The Hypothetical 2025 Marvel Studios Release Calendar, V1

In March of 2022, it was reported that Sabir Pirzada, who worked with Marvel Studios on both Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel, was developing a Nova project with the studio. The trade report indicated that it was unclear whether or not Pirzada’s work was for a film or streaming series and, as of publishing, that was still unclear. However, Prizada’s current track record with Marvel allows one to lean towards expecting a series about The Human Rocket.

Confidence is high that Destin Daniel Cretton’s sequel to 2021’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings will hit theaters ahead of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. It seems like Cretton and star Simu Liu are going to be very busy starting in 2023.

When the search for an actress to portray Kamala Khan was ongoing, a rumor indicated that whoever would eventually take on the role would have a pretty heavy workload that would consist of Season 1, a film, and Season 2 all being filmed over the course of 3 years. If that rumor still holds any water, Iman Vellani is going to find herself on set for Season 2 of Ms. Marvel sometime in the next year so that she can also be available to fit Avengers: The Kang Dynasty into her schedule. It would not be incredibly surprising if this were among the announcements made during either Disney Plus Day or Marvel Studios’ Showcase at D23.

It’s been a long, long time since our original scoop that Marvel Studios was developing a Nomad project. However, no news does not always equal bad news. Confidence is high that Nomad is still in development and is intended to be included as part of the Multiverse Saga.

The first of what is currently set to be a 2025 Avengers double-feature, The Kang Dynasty might just have a lot to do with some of the artifacts fans have already seen in some of Phase 4’s early projects. It remains to be seen, but it’s very possible that both Ms. Marvel and Shang-Chi’s accessories might play major roles in the Multiverse Saga.

A second Moon Knight season seems a sure thing. Star Oscar Isaac and director Mohamed Diab have teased it. Fans are hungry for it. There’s no reason Kevin Feige doesn’t announce it at D23…unless it’s not happening. That would be a good reason not to announce it.

At this point, why not? Rumors about this film have dried up, but a recent piece of information that Marvel Studios may regain the distribution rights to live-action Hulk films does give some hope that it might come to fruition. Bruce Banner’s trip to Sakaar in Episode 2 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is right in line with the earliest rumors I ever heard about what will essentially be a prelude to this film, but we’ll have to wait until Episode 9 to find out if Marvel Studios is going forward with this project…unless they decide to grace fans with a Hulk-sized gift at D23.

    *NOTE*

While it’s not a Disney project and won’t be announced at D23, it wouldn’t be shocking at all to see Spider-Man 4 hit theaters in the space between Marvel Studios May 2nd film and their November 7th film.

According to the Phase 6 slate unveiled by Kevin Feige at SDCC ’22, there’s one spot left to fill and, to be honest, there isn’t enough strong info around any one project to confidently place it here. With that in mind, rumors of a Harry Styles-led Starfox project made the rounds some time ago, and while I initially dismissed them, I was told by someone I trust that to keep an ear to the ground as there might be some fire to that smoke. So while we’d set the odds very low here (I’d say under a 1% chance this is correct), it’s as good of a guess as any.

The capstone of the Multiverse Saga, fans should expect Marvel Studios to pull out all the stops for this one and for it to include all the bells and whistles, including possibly bringing back some of the biggest stars from the Infinity Saga. It could also serve as a way for the studio to reset things with new actors in old roles, old actors in new roles, or any manner of shenanigans.

  • The Hypothetical 2024 Marvel Studios Release Calendar, V3

The Hypothetical 2024 Marvel Studios Release Calendar, V3

Thanks to Kevin Feige’s presentation at SDCC ’22, not much has been left to the imagination for 2024. Marvel Studio’s One-Above-All blew the doors off Hall H by officially revealing Daredevil: Born Again, Captain America: New World Order, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four would all be released in 2024. He did, however, leave one currently scheduled film date unfilled and what look to be three Disney Plus series. Feige also gave a time frame for when Agatha: Coven of Chaos should start streaming and from the looks of it, 2024 is going to be a very full slate for Marvel Studios live-action productions.

As per Feige at SDCC ’22, Coven of Chaos will bridge 2023 and 2024, so if Marvel Studios sticks to that timeline, it’s just a matter of when in December it starts and when in January it ends, assuming a 6-episode run until otherwise indicated.

Once upon a time, it seemed like a sure thing that Deadpool 3 would hold down this spot. I even got wind at one point that it might start production in the Spring of 2023, making this the perfect date. However, as time goes on, confidence in Deadpool 3 being ready in time for this date continues to decrease. But until such a time that confidence hits absolute zero (and I hear that something else is taking this date), it’ll stay here.

Daredevil: Born Again will be Marvel Studios’ longest series yet, with an 18-episode first season on the docket. Everyone has their own idea about how this series will work out: three six-episode pods; a nine-episode “part one” and a nine-episode “part two.” But as of now, Marvel Studios hasn’t given any indication of what to expect so we’re rolling with this being 18 consecutive weeks of DD goodness. 18 weeks is over a third of the year and there are plenty of other streaming series they want to roll out, so a March 1st start date allows this big event series to bridge the gap between films.

It took a little longer than expected to crack the script and find a director, but now things are headed in the right direction with Julius Onah taking the helm. Expect casting news to start trickling out over the last quarter of 2022 and for production to get underway early in 2023.

The first draft of Thunderbolts has been complete for quite a while now, having been done by Black Widow’s Eric Pearson. With Jake Schreier now on board as director and much, if not all, of the cast of the film already in place, don’t expect a ton of news to roll out about this one.

Whether or not this project, which was announced back in February of 2021, is called Midnight Angels or not remains to be seen; however, once fans see Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, they will certainly have an understanding of what this project could be about should Ryan Coogler chose to center this Wakanda-centric spinoff on those characters. Of course, there will be a couple of other potential stories that could also make for an interesting D+ series and Ironheart is itself a Black Panther-related spinoff, so the World of Wakanda will continue to grow in many directions regardless of what this series is titled.

Wonder Man finally gets his chance to step into the MCU! While I don’t expect this show to begin filming until 2023, there may be something to the rumors about them already looking to cast Simon Williams, meaning that the character would debut in another project ahead of his streaming series. Wonder Man and the Wakanda series do seem to be next up, so which one debuts first in the Fall of 2024 will just be a matter of which one gets into production first and successfully avoids the kinds of delays that have hit all of Marvel Studios live-action streaming series.

Nearly five and half years after first being teased at SDCC ’19, Marvel Studios will debut their version of the First Family. Matt Shakman was recently chosen to shepherd the project and early word is that his vision lines up nicely with not only what Kevin Feige has in mind but with the original vision of the characters who first appeared in the World’s Greatest Comics Magazine over 60 years ago.

Fans have had a field day wondering “what’s going on with Armor Wars?” The answer is probably much less sinister than the internet believes. The project is still in development and as is the case with so many of Marvel Studios’ projects, they are simply just taking their time to make sure they put together a solid project before heading into production.

*NOTE* While confidence is fairly high that 2024 will include Midnight Angels, Wonder Man, and Armor Wars (though it’s possible a Nova series pushes one of them to 2025) confidence is much lower on the order in which they might arrive.

  • Funko Pop! Reveals New Look at ‘Secret Invasion’ Character

Funko Pop! Reveals New Look at ‘Secret Invasion’ Character

Marvel Studios is adapting one of Marvel Comics craziest event series in Secret Invasion. Expected to stream early in 2023, Marvel Studios Secret Invasion has been billed as a paranoia-filled spy thriller. And in the MCU, if spy games are involved, THE spy will be there. Samuel L. Jackson has been attached to the project since its earliest days (in fact, the series was initially described as a Nick Fury project) and while there hasn’t been much in the way of promotion, the actor has been front and center for what has been shown. Now, as part of a series of reveals of Funko Pops! that will be available at NYCC, a new look at Jackson’s Fury has been unleashed!

As of the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Fury was known to be in space working with a group of friendly Skrulls while Talos was simming him on Earth. Secret Invasion will see Fury back on Earth, but becoming aware that not all Skrulls’ interests are aligned with those of Talos. Crew merch that surfaced earlier this year seemed to indicate that at least part of the comic event’s plot, which centered around a Skrull god and a prophecy that the Skrulls were destined to rule Earth, should make its way into the streaming series, perhaps hinting at the identity of some of the rivals Skrulls. It’s also recently been revealed that some of the events and characters look to be inspired by a recent comic miniseries titled Meet the Skrulls. So while the full plot hasn’t been revealed (fans are hopeful a trailer for Secret Invasion will come out of the upcoming D23 Expo), it seems that Nick Fury will have a a pretty full plate.

  • ‘The Rings of Power’ Debut Leaves More Questions Than Answers

‘The Rings of Power’ Debut Leaves More Questions Than Answers

Season 1 of Amazon’s mega-budget adventure, The Rings of Power, debuted with a two-episode opener that featured dazzling VFX, some great new characters, a couple of familiar characters and a wonderful tour of Middle-earth. It also left plenty of room for fans to wonder and theorize as they wait for Episode 3 to debut on September 9th. We breakdown the biggest unresolved questions.

    Stranger Danger

Episode 1 concluded with the very Superman-like entrance of a character known so far only as The Stranger. The Stranger comes into the care of the adventurous Nori Brandyfoot and the entirely unadventurous Poppy Proudfellow and by the time Episode 2 concludes, only three things really seem clear about him. He is incredibly powerful, he has arrived with a purpose (though he can’t confer his purpose to the Harfoots) and he seems to siphon energy from his surroundings, as seen not only by the fireflies dropping dead around him but also the lack of heat radiating from the flames at the site of his arrival.

But who is The Stranger? Nobody really knows just yet and the showrunners are doing just enough to make fans’ minds march through myriad possibilities. From what we know so far, he certainly seems to be a Maia, one of a group of wizards who were sent to Middle-earth to help its people in their fight against Sauron. So the arrival of a Maia in the first two episodes, which go to great lengths to prove that “the enemy” has not been vanquished just yet, wouldn’t be out of line. If The Stranger is indeed one of the Maiar, it would be in line with The Rings of Power’s introduction of a young Galadriel and a young Elrond to have this wizard be a younger version of a familiar character.

Is he Gandalf? His firefly whisperer routine is certainly (and intentionally) reminiscent of Gandalf’s ability to commune with the animal life of Middle-earth as seen in The Lord of the Rings films. However, Gandalf’s Doctor Doolitle routine hasn’t been known to kill the participants. Still, if this is Gandalf, he’s new to Middle-earth and clearly not fully in control of his energy siphoning abilities just yet.

Is he Saruman? Like Gandalf, Saruman was a Maia sent to Middle-earth to protect the people against the growing threat of Saruron. Unlike Gandalf, Saruman’s “moral flexibility” made him much less of an ally to the people of Middle-earth and more of a wild card. So far, The Stranger seems a bit wild card-ish.

But is The Stranger either of those two known wizards? Unlike The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings films, The Rings of Power is not directly adapting any novels. It is, instead, drawing inspiration from a chapter in The History of Middle-earth which is really more of a collection of Tolkein’s thoughts on how things may have worked out chronologically, in this case in the Second Age. And Tolkein didn’t write about Gandalf and Saruman hanging out in Middle-earth during the Second Age. From what’s known, it seems Gandalf and Saruman didn’t come to Middle-earth until after the forging of the One Ring. However, other wizards seem to have been there.

Is The Stranger one of The Blue Wizards? In The People’s of Middle-earth, the twelfth volume of The History of Middle-Earth, it is explained that two Blue Wizards arrived on Middle-earth in the Second Age year 1600. And that seems to be close to about where The Rings of Power is set. In fact, it seems to be about 100 years or so after the setting of the first two episodes. How do we know? SA 1600 saw Sauron build Barad-dur in Mordor; the first two episodes seem to hint that Sauron must have a new stronghold somewhere and it just hasn’t been found yet. SA 1500 saw Celebrimbor being working with the dwarfs of Khazad-dum to build rings under the guidance of Annatar, a being who claimed to be an ambassador of the Valar (the immortal creators and rulers of the world). Episode 2 saw the beginnings of this relationship as Elrond and Durin’s reunion will eventually lead down this road. So it’s certainly possible that the showrunners played a little fast and loose with some already flexible timelines and decided to introduce the Blue Wizard(s) about 100 years early.

Of course, there are other options, too. The Stranger could be Sauron. He could be another wizard previously unnamed and unknown. He could be something else entirely. But as Daniel Weyman, who plays The Stranger points out, the hope is that fans have fun trying to figure out who he is, so they may hang onto his identity for quite some time.

    What’s in The Box?

Showrunner Patrick McKay believed that mystery was at the heart of Tolkein’s writings and the first two episodes made very clear that The Rings of Power was going to be filled with mysteries. Episode 2 ends with a big one as the two Durins debate whether or not Elrond’s visit was connected to whatever treasure resides within their mystery box.

The foremost theory about what’s in the box connects to another of Tolkein’s posthumously published collected works, The Simarillion. It’s possible the box holds one of the elven Silmarils, jewels that contained within them some of the light of the Two Trees of Valinor, which were seen in a trailer for The Rings of Power and whose presence reaches well beyond their destruction which happened well before the events of the series. If the dwarves are hiding one of these gems from Elrond, it should cause quite a stir.

    Sauron’s Scary Sword

Not much to think about her, but Theo’s attraction to the very spooky sword of Sauron is of great concern. Not as concerning as Theo’s haircut, but he has to hide those ears somehow.

    Stunning Seamen

As things looked very bleak for Galadriel and Halbrand, a mysterious figure on a ship full of other mysterious figures arrived to presumably save them. Plenty of options exist, but given the fact that the rescue was at sea, it’s highly likely the ship hails from Númenor, an island nation of men who helped the elves defeat Morgoth. Númenor has been seen before in The Lord of The Rings films and if the Rings of Power is going to Númenor (sppiler: it is), it will show it at the height of its power and, eventually, show it’s fall. And someone we’ll meet there will be an ancestor of one of the great heroes of the Third Age, Aragorn.

With five seasons planned for The Rings of Power and over 1000 years to cover before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings, don’t expect all these questions to be resolved in Episode 3, but after two episodes they certainly seem to stand out as questions that, when resolved, will drive the plot.

  • ‘Harry Potter’ Actor Joins Cast of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’

‘Harry Potter’ Actor Joins Cast of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’

Actor Brendan Gleeson, who portrayed Alastor ‘MadEye’ Moody in the Harry Potter films has joined Todd Phillips’ sequel to 2019 Joker.

The sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will see Joaquin Phoenix return as clown turned angry clown, Arthur Fleck. Phoenix will be joined in the film by Lady Gaga, who is reported to be playing Harley Quinn. Zazie Betts is also reportedly returning to reprise her role from the first film.

Production on Joker: Folie à Deux is expected to begin this December ahead of an October 2024 release. Early rumors suggest that the film will be set in Gotham’s infamous Arkham Asylum and that it will be, at least in parts, a musical. The trade reporting Gleeson’s inclusion in the film was unable to discern a role for the well-known Irish actor.
