Sam and Bucky are Back in Action in New ‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLIDER’ Trailer

Marvel Studios The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is under 6 weeks away from debuting on Disney Plus and they used the big stage of Super Bowl LV to give us a new look at the action-packed streaming series.

Our first look at footage from the series came during the 2020 Super Bowl and we saw the first full trailer just about 2 months ago but this new trailer REALLY puts the focus on Sam and Bucky’s relationship and gives us our first idea about what it is Zemo is up to!

  • ‘WANDAVISION’: Putting Together the Pieces

    ‘WANDAVISION’: Putting Together the Pieces

Episode 5 of WandaVision was not only the most well-written, well-executed and exciting episode of Marvel Studios first foray into streamable TV but also the first time the creative team left clues big enough for us to potentially finally put together what exactly is going on in the Maximoff Anomaly. Some of what we saw was fresh and some of what we saw tied back into things we’ve been thinking about since Episode 1. Applying deductive reasoning to Marvel Studios properties can be a lost cause, but given the enormity of what I think I saw yesterday, let’s give it shot.

    The Clues

    The Reemergence of Wanda’s Accent

When Wanda left the Hex to confront S.W.O.R.D., she not only put on an impressive display of power, she also reverted back to speaking with a Sokovian accent. A hot topic of discussion in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, the accent waned and essentially disappeared over the course of Wanda’s MCU appearances. Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed Elizabeth Olsen in her 3 most recent MCU films explained that part of the reason her accent had faded was that she had been trained in espionage under Natasha Romanoff; in a 2020 interview with Inidwire, Olsen explained that the accent hadn’t disappeared and that her experiences with the Avengers in the United States had caused it to fade. Hearing yesterday was startling and it was meant to be.

Wanda’s Lack of Control Over the Twins

Image result for wandavision for the children

Episode 3 was the first time we saw it, though it took until Episode 5 to really understand it: Wanda holds no power over her children. She couldn’t postpone their arrival, she can’t control their minds (even as babies) and they are clearly aware of what’s happening in Westview unlike everyone else who is under her power. We’re led to believe Wanda is in charge of everything, but over the course of the episode it becomes entirely clear that is not the case.

Aunite A’s Uncanny Ability to Know Everything

Everyone has been waiting for the other shoe to drop with Kathryn Hahn’s Agnes and it may have finally done so in Episode 5. As Vision not-so-subtly tells us, Agnes seems to have a knack for knowing exactly when to be there for the twins. Somehow she knows they can’t sleep and that they are suddenly in need of a dog house. It’s also no coincidence that in Episode 5, she’s present for both times the twins age up and there when Wanda talks them out of doing it for a third time. If you think back through the earliest episodes of the season, Agnes made several comments about Wanda having children and certainly seems to be incredibly interested in them now.

    Dr. Darcy Lewis

WandaVision has brilliantly reinvented Kat Dennings’ Darcy. So far nobody has been more instrumental in understanding what’s going on inside the anomaly than Darcy, both for S.W.O.R.D. and for viewers. Darcy dropped 2 big clues in Episode 5. The first being her cool nickname for the anomaly (the hex) and the second being that Wanda is displaying more power than she’s ever shown before.

    Monica’s Comments to Wanda

Image result for monica rambeau wandavision

One of THE biggest hints from Episode 5 also seems to clarify something from Episode 3. During the aforementioned standoff with S.W.O.R.D., Captain Rambeau steps forward to reason with Wanda, mentioning that for someone who is a telepath and therefore should have easily seen through Monica’s “Geraldine”, Wanda was very willing to let Monica in and have her help deliver the twins. It’s also of interest that while Monica was in the house, the normally helicoptery Agnes was reduced to a gossipy bystander.

“I don’t know how any of this started in the first place.” and “I didn’t do that.”

Following Vision’s discovery that Wanda is controlling the minds of the people of Westview, he confronted his wife and refused to back down. What followed was the most protracted discussion about the strangeness of the town to date, including an admission from Wanda that while she is definitely in charge, she doesn’t remember how things started. Not long after that and just as Vision begins to confront Wanda about her wrongdoings, the doorbell rings. These interruptions have been all too common over the course of the show, but Wanda’s admission that she’s not the one doing this paired with her surprise at the arrival of someone claiming to be (but who is certainly not) her brother make it clear that there’s a bigger game afoot.

    So What’s Up With Wanda?

I’ve long thought that the folks who complained about the first 3 episodes of WandaVision would be running back for clues they missed when the season was over. I was wrong because Episode 5 is the time to do that because the clues above point in the direction of someone more powerful than Wanda being in charge of what’s going on. As Dr. Lewis pointed out, Wanda has never wielded her power at this level nor manifested it in this way. That points to someone having potentially taught her how to do it, someone with a different connection to the energies of the universe than Wanda’s. While Wanda is certainly controlling the minds of the citizens of Westview, the clues above are enough to convince me that she’s not doing so CONSCIOUSLY.

Wanda reverts back to her accent because she’s being controlled, puppeteered into making that show of power against S.W.O.R.D. So while it’s Wanda talking, it’s Agnes pulling the strings, explaining why the accent Wanda has worked so hard to hide finds its way out. Agnes always knows when to be there or to cause a disruption because she quite literally has a “plant” in the house giving her info. Olsen has referenced the plant in more than one interview which would be really strange if it were just another set prop like a couch or a table.

Darcy and Monica are both onto something significant in Wanda’s ability to manifest new powers and her subconsciously allowing Monica, who she may well view as someone who could help free her from whatever is controlling her, to enter her life. It’s almost certainly their insistence that Wanda is not acting totally of her own volition that will lead to them doing something off books to help her out.

    Who Done It?

Image result for kathryn hahn agnes

If someone is controlling Wanda, all signs point to Agnes and to Agnes being Agatha Harkness. Why is Agnes doing this? They told us in Episode 2 and it became pretty clear in Episode 5: for the children. There’s enough evidence to suggest that Agnes is incredibly interested in Wanda’s children, and given Billy’s power set and destiny in the comics, it makes sense that she’d be particularly interested in him. While there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that Agnes is the mastermind behind all of this, the one thing I still can’t quite wrap my head around is how Wanda came into contact with her in the first place. Maybe in an effort to reconnect with someone who knew her parents somehow? Maybe in an effort to find some relief from the many traumas that have shaped her life over the past several years? Whatever the case, her interactions with Agnes aren’t leading down any good paths and I expect things to get worse before they get better. I suppose we’ll all find out together over the next 4 weeks.

  • Stacy Osei-Kuffour to Pen Marvel Studios ‘BLADE’

Stacy Osei-Kuffour to Pen Marvel Studios ‘BLADE’

After an extensive six-month search, Marvel Studios has come to an agreement with playwright Stacey Osei-Koffour to pen the script for the MCU reboot of Blade. Osei-Kuffour, who worked as a story editor on HBO’s highly acclaimed Watchmen, will become the first Black woman to write a Marvel Studios screenplay.

A trade report indicates that Marvel Studios only seriously considered Black writers for the film and that star Mahershala Ali was part of the process. The studio will now turn its attention to finding a director for the film, which currently has not been given a release date after being officially announced at SDCC ’19.

Osei-Kuffor’s is an ascending talent, having received an Emmy nomination for her work on Pen15, and her diverse background writing plays and poetry makes her an incredibly interesting choice for what looks to be Marvel Studios first full-fledged horror film.

  • Tom Holland Calls ‘SPIDER-MAN 3’ “The Most Ambitious Standalone Superhero Movie Ever Made”

Tom Holland Calls ‘SPIDER-MAN 3’ “The Most Ambitious Standalone Superhero Movie Ever Made”

Trying to keep up with the rumors around Marvel Studios and Sony’s third Spider-Man film hasn’t been easy. What’s more, even the facts around the movie (the returns of Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina) make it hard to get a handle on just what is going on. Is it a full-blown live-action Spider-verse film? Is it a Sinister Six film? Is it both? While we could go on all day about what it might be, we now know at least something about it thanks to Tom Holland: it’s going to be a can’t miss event.

In an interview with Variety, Holland was asked if he could shed any light on the upcoming film. His response, while measured by Holland’s standards, was still informative:

What’s funny is like, I nearly told you then. You were so close to getting what you want.I can say that it’s the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made. You sit down, read the script, and see what they’re trying to do, and they’re succeeding. It’s really impressive. I’ve never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it. And I’m just, you know, again, that lucky little shit who happens to be Spider-Man in it. We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we’re starting again. I’m just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it.

We’ve seen some pretty impressive standalone superhero films in the past and Holland, while occasionally prone to hyperbole, knows well that fans are going to take him at his word on this, so it’s safe to say that he’s not trying to overhype the film. His comments also allow room in our heads for our idea of just what is going on here to grow. Maybe, just maybe, all those wild rumors are true, to some extent, and we’ll see a Sinister Six, Spider-Verse, Daredevil, multiversal event unlike anything we’ve seen before.

Spider-Man 3 is still on track to swing into theaters in 2021.

  • Throwback Thursday: That Time Elizabeth Olsen Spoiled ‘WANDAVISION’…in 2015

Throwback Thursday: That Time Elizabeth Olsen Spoiled ‘WANDAVISION’…in 2015

Over the past several years, Marvel Studios has displayed an increased willingness to allow their start to help shape the creative visions of their characters. For example, Mark Ruffalo has on more than one occasion mentioned that he and Kevin Feige have had discussions around what’s next for the Hulk and Chris Hemsworth has made it clear that it was the willingness of Thor creatives (including Taika Waititi) to allow the star some input on the direction of Thor that has kept him around in the MCU for a fourth solo film. It’s quite possible that Elizabeth Olsen may have planted some seeds in the brain on the One-Above-All as well, seeds that have now come to bear fruit in Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series WandaVision.

In 2015, Olsen sat down alongside Aaron Taylor Johnson to talk about Avengers: Age of Ultron with Screen Rant. You can check out the full interview below, but  around the 1:40 mark when asked what she’d like to see Scarlet Witch do next, Olsen had this to say:

My favorite is House of M but that would never happen. If she could have two fake babies and everyone tell her that they don’t really exist and her just go nuts that would be unbelievable but I don’t think they’re going to do that. It might be a little too dark for the Marvel Universe. When she loses her mind it’s my favorite thing in the comics.

That wasn’t the only time Olsen talked about House of M. In fact, she brought the comic arc up again when promoting the DVD release of AoU later that same year. It’s safe to say that the arc has been on Olsen’s mind for some time and while we don’t know just how hard she pushed for Marvel Studios to adapt House of M, it’s clearly in line with how the studio treats its top talent. We know that House of M was one big inspiration for the series even though it can’t be adapted beat for beat. However, Olsen’s focus on Wanda “losing her mind” after learning about the true nature of her children is definitely something that could be adapted and, quite honestly, seems right in line with what we know about the series so far. It also might be an example of the actress spoiling a series that wasn’t even conceived, much less written when she talked about it 6 years ago.

The nature of Wanda’s twins in the comics was pretty confusing and this could be an opportunity for Marvel Studios to streamline it a bit in order to make it easier for general audiences to swallow. Something as simple as Wanda’s kids being created with magic inside the hexagonal hex and being incapable of leaving that reality could REALLY be the last straw for a character who has lost everyone dear to her so far. We can also see from the mid-season trailer that S.W.O.R.D. is going to become more aggressive in their investigation of the hex bubble over the second half of the season, raising another option and an interesting question to ponder: what happens to Billy and Tommy if the bubble pops? Sure Wanda and Monica can survive outside of it because they existed before it did, but will the twins have that same ability? Should any of these ideas be even remotely on the mark, you can see how it’ll set up a MAJOR showdown between an enraged Wanda and S.W.O.R.D., an idea you can read more about here. On more than one occasion, Feige has mentioned how we will see Wanda become the Scarlet Witch during WandaVision and that most likely means we’ll see a major display of her true powers and, quite possibly, a heel turn that sets her on a very different path…perhaps even into conflict with the Sorcerer Supreme himself when she gets done wiping the floor with S.W.O.R.D. One thing is for sure: we are in for a wild ride over the next 5 episodes and beyond.

Kevin Feige Breathes New Life into ‘AGENTS OF ATLAS’ Rumors

Later this month, Disney Plus will finally launch in Singapore, making over 500 films and 15,000 episodes of streaming content available in the country where 6 of the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time, including the top 3, are Marvel Studios films. Ahead of the launch, Disney held a press junket yesterday via video chat and Marvel Studios One-Above-All, Kevin Fiege, gave an overview of his studio’s offerings and took a few questions, one of which led to an exciting bit of news when asked if it was “high time we get a Southeast Asian Marvel superhero on Disney+.” Feige replied, “I think it is. And I think you won’t have to wait there very long at all. We’ve announced a number of shows and we’ve got more in the works.

How Marvel's first featured Pinoy superhero can save society | ABS-CBN News

With WandaVision now streaming on Disney Plus, fans have gotten their first taste of how Marvel Studios plans to use the streaming service to expand its Marvel Cinematic Multiverse over the next several years. The studio has a dozen or more properties on its slate over the next few years and, according to Feige, more that we don’t know about including one that will potentially include a Southeast Asian hero. Interestingly enough, 2019 saw Marvel Comics relaunch an old team with a brand new look in Agents of Atlas. The book, written by Greg Pak, saw Jimmy Woo (played wonderfully in the MCU by Randall Park) assemble a team of Asian heroes, including Filipino hero Wave. Just about a year ago, rumors circulated that Marvel Studios was looking to develop the property as a Disney + series. The return of Woo in WandaVision along with the debut of Shang-Chi later this year and this response from Feige could be signs that the studio is indeed headed in that direction.

  • 5 Candidates for the Next Director of S.W.O.R.D.

5 Candidates for the Next Director of S.W.O.R.D.

The king is dead; long live the king.

With all due respect to Josh Stamberg’s Tyler Haywood, the looming showdown between Wanda Maximoff and the Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Department might mean the newly introduced organization might be replacing its acting director by season’s end. With that in mind, here’s a look at 5 potential candidates to step into command of S.W.O.R.D.

    Monica Rambeau

Already a Captain in the organization founded by her mother, Monica Rambeau stands out as a safe choice to step into the leadership role should Haywood find himself…unable to fill it. We’ve already seen enough to know that Monica is NOT going to have too much in common with her comic book counterpart and she really does make the most sense for the role. She’s spent her entire life holding secrets most people only dream of and if not for having been snapped, she might already be in the top spot. Being in charge of S.W.O.R.D. would also set her up nicely for a reunion with our next candidate.

    Carol Danvers

In all likelihood, Carol is a bit too busy to hold down the role, but should Marvel Studios choose to merge work some of Carol’s recent Alpha Flight plot points into Captain Marvel 2, having her take command of S.W.O.R.D. would do the trick. She’s already had a hand in the Avengers Initiative and certainly on the creation of S.W.O.R.D. and no Terran hero will have more experience with extraterrestrial threats. However, with S.W.O.R.D. cutting back on its space program, taking Carol out of the skies might not be the best choice.

    Abigail Brand

There’s no better choice than the Special Agent Abigail Brand but there are certainly some hold-ups to her ascendancy to the big chair. While the true nature of S.W.O.R.D.’s reworking isn’t entirely clear, the idea that they are focusing on sentient weapons could make them a prime candidate to be the MCU’s first mutant monitoring agency. Given the fact that Brand herself is a mutant, that might not work out too well just yet. Of course, the larger issue is that, for the moment we haven’t met Brand yet and so unless she’s coming in from outside the organization, it might be too early to see her.

    Henry Peter Gyrich

Gyrich is one of a handful of characters whose continued absence from the MCU is both frustrating and confusing. One of Marvel biggest pricks, Gyrich has been a thorn in the side of Marvel’s comic book heroes for decades in many roles including, at one time, the co-director of S.W.O.R.D. Should the organization’s showdown with the Scarlet Witch turn into a bit of a shitshow, it’s possible that the government might install a guy like Gyrich in a position of power to keep an eye on things from the inside.

    Adam Brashear

A surprise pick for sure, but Adam Brashear might be the right choice at the right time. It seems incredibly unlikely we’ll see Brashear’s comic book origin story retold on the big screen but Marvel Studios could certainly come up with a creative way to see the doctor and former Marine become the Blue Marvel after installing him as director of S.W.O.R.D. Brashear’s military background could serve as a great entry point into the organization. As director Brashear could open up Project Perseus and begin investigating the Negative Zone before one of those darned science accidents gifts him with his incredible powers. This would of course, also allow him to meet Monica Rambeau, with whom he’s shared a relationship in the past!

For all we know, Hayward may be the man going forward, but Marvel Studios has a great opportunity to make a change at the top and do so with style!

‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3’ Production Update

Most of the Guardians of the Galaxy are currently in Australia filming their chunk of Thor: Love and Thunder and now we know where they’ll be headed next as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will film, at least in part, in the UK. Principal photography is believed to be slated for the second half of this year following the completion of James Gunn’s Peacemaker series for HBO Max.

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 filmed in Atlanta, the first Guardians film was shot in the UK at both Shepperton Studios and Longcross Studios, the latter of which is currently hosting the production of Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness. Little is known about the plot of the third Guardians film, which was originally slated for a May 2020 release, but rumors have indicated the plot of the film will center of the tragic backstory of Rocket. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently undated but is expected to hit theaters in 2023.
