    ‘WANDAVISION’ Shows Its Hand

In just 34 minutes Episode 4 of WandaVision, “We Interrupt This Program”, managed to shit on pretty much every popular fan theory, integrate some key pieces of MCU history and clarify the direction of the series, setting fans up for what looks to be one of the biggest heel turns in Marvel Comics history making its way into the MCU. While there’s a chance Marvel Studios could be giving us all a big okey-doke, it seems like we’ve seen what we need to see to know that depending on what side of the story you’re on, the bad guys are either Wanda or S.W.O.R.D. Let’s dissect how “We Interrupt This Program” gets us there.

    Nobody is Anybody

WandaVision theories: Every Westview character who might have links to the comics | GamesRadar+

Probably the biggest reveal of the series so far is that everyone in Westview, other than Wanda, Vision and presumably Agnes, is just Joe Schmoe. Herb’s not the High Evolutionary, Bev isn’t Bova, Norm’s not the Grim Reaper and Phil isn’t Wonder Man. I suppose there’s still a chance the Dottie could be SOMEBODY, but at this point, Occam’s Razor would lead us to believe that none of these neighbors are anything other than puppets in Wanda’s new reality, as Arlyn Murphy predicted earlier this week. On the surface, we get a cute little sitcom, but the larger reality is that Wanda is essentially responsible for the abduction of a large number of real human beings for the purpose of making her fantasy a reality. These people are being held captive and having their memories altered or erased.

    S.W.O.R.D. is on the Case

The episode deftly integrated some key pieces of information about S.W.O.R.D. into its first few minutes and, by doing so, made it clear that they are a well-established organization that has redefined itself a bit after the Blip. We’ve always known S.W.O.R.D. was in the series, but by devoting an entire episode to the organization, Jac Schaeffer and Matt Shakman have made it clear that they are the “big bad” from Wanda’s point of view. It’s not Hydra; it’s not AIM; it’s just S.W.O.R.D.

We get some key pieces of info during the episode that explain some of the things fans have been questioning since the beginning. We see that the bubble around the town of Westview is hexagonal and hexagons have been omnipresent throughout the series. As I mentioned in our first episode of The Universal Church of Truth, the way they continually framed Wanda and Vision with hexagons made it seem like they were contained within one, something I attributed to Wanda’s “hex” powers from the comics. This episode seems to support that and it also lends credence to an old scoop that we shared which indicated that Wanda’s reality-altering powers from the comics would come into play in WandaVision.

We’ve seen hints throughout the first 3 episodes but now it’s made clear that S.W.O.R.D. is investigating this hex bubble and Wanda clearly views them as a threat to her reality. We saw the cracks starting to form in Wanda in the last episode, but today’s perspective shift made it crystal clear: S.W.O.R.D. is the enemy and Wanda has already assaulted an agent.

    Agnes

While there were other people (most noticeably Dottie) whose “real” identities weren’t revealed, it’s no mistake that we don’t have a real-world match for Agnes. Ever since she was cast, people have expected Kathryn Hahn to be Agatha Harkness and she certainly has a much meatier role here than helping Wanda with dinner. If you’re not asking, “Why in the hell is Wanda in New Jersey in the first place?”, then you should. And while we don’t have a clear answer at this point, the chances are good that it has something to do with Agatha.

Given what we know about Wanda so far, she shouldn’t be capable of something like this massive hex that seems to be altering reality, wiping the minds of people both inside and outside the bubble and releasing a massive amount of energy in the form of the cosmic microwave background radiation so neatly explained by Dr. Darcy Lewis (and now the most likely explanation for the impending powers of Monica Rambeau). Thanks to the lessons of the Ancient One, we know MCU magic is all about energy manipulation and it seems like that’s what is happening here, meaning someone had to teach Wanda some magic and that someone is Agatha. I expect we’ll get quite the exposition on her sooner rather than later, but I’m sure she’s Wanda’s teacher and the reason why Kevin Feige told us all so many times that WandaVision will give us the MCU’s true Scarlet Witch.

    Wanda as the Villain

The signs have been there all along that Wanda will stop at nothing to keep her reality intact and we’ve already covered some of the darker decisions Wanda has made. In addition to kidnapping people, altering their memories and attacking a S.W.O.R.D. agent, she rewound time and maybe erased the S.W.O.R.D. beekeeper after she and Vision discovered him. She continues to stop Vision from investigating. She’s willing to lie to Vision repeatedly to keep him living the fantasy, but in one of the show’s creepiest moments yet, she received another reminder of the world she’s attempted to escape when we briefly saw the synthezoid corpse of her husband appear (is Wanda toting Vision’s corpse around with her?!). If she hasn’t lost it entirely, she will soon. We’ve heard the moment from the trailer where Wanda and Vision decide to fight for their home and that means that we are likely to see a full-on attack on S.W.O.R.D. in the final two episodes of the series. Wanda before magic was plenty powerful to nearly kill Thanos. This new and improved Wanda is going to be way out of S.W.O.R.D.’s league, even if Monica is powered up or if she finds herself going up against her own husband.  Think Avengers: Disassembled.

    Who You Gonna Call?

Over a year ago, I shared a rumor about Benedict Cumberbatch appearing in WandaVision. While a lot of people had happy thoughts about him delivering the twins, others of us have had a different idea in mind: the Sorcerer Supreme is going to have to come into play to protect the real reality by taking down Wanda. We know Wanda’s story will continue into Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness and we know that she’s the key to breaking open the multiverse, turning the MCU into the MCM (Marvel Cinematic Multiverse). Avengers Disassembled again provides an excellent example of what we might expect when the Sorcerer Supreme faces off with the Scarlet Witch (even though I can’t hear that “NO.” from Wanda on the page, it somehow sounds a lot like the “No” from episode 2).

Wanda’s heel turn in the pages of the comics while not well received by everyone, was one of the very few times that the Avengers were not only helpless but also terrified. I imagine the same will be true in the final episodes of WandaVision, though I’m less sure that her villainous turn will carry on after the series concludes. Either way, it seems as though Episode 4 has made the path forward for the series pretty clear. Sure there are going to be some twists and turns, but this episode seems to have laid out the main components of the plot and given us quite a bit to look forward to over the next 5 episodes.

  • Scoop: Marvel Studios Throws a “Changeup”

Scoop: Marvel Studios Throws a “Changeup”

Identifying and tracking the projects Marvel Studios has “on deck” is one of our favorite things to do at Murphy’s Multiverse. Over the last 5 months, this has led us to the discovery of 6 new production companies. Beginning with Solve Everything and Grass-Fed, continuing to Arlyn Murphy’s discovery of Blueberry Waffles, Standoffish and Log Jam and identifying Frequent Productions the day of Disney’s Investor Day presentation. All 6 of these production companies have since been confirmed to be Marvel Studios productions so we recently had some fun trying to match them up with known upcoming projects; however, we might have to throw most of that out the window as it turns out we have to add another one to the mix: Changeup Productions.

Just identifying a 7th production company was enough to put a hitch in any efforts to match them up, but that process was further complicated the fact that the creation of Changeup predates Blueberry Waffles, Log Jam and Standoffish by a month and the creation of Frequent by two months. While it’s not a sure thing, it likely indicates that whatever project Changeup is will be filming sooner than those other 4. With that in mind and knowing that Marvel Studios is looking to get filming on Secret Invasion going before mid-year, the Nicky Fury-centric series seems the most likely fit.

Captain Marvel Directors Reveal Why They Made Skrulls the Good Guys

Regardless of which project Changeup turns out to be, it leaves us with one more production company than known projects meaning that Kevin Feige didn’t play all his cards at Disney Investor Day and there’s another project which is likely to begin filming in either 2021 or early 2022.  Deadpool 3, Ghost Rider, Illuminati, Nomad (still not sure exactly what it is but it could be the vehicle for Chris Evans’ return to the MCU) Nova, Secret Warriors or Young Avengers are leading candidates for whichever production company ends up unmatched now, but for the moment, we’re still trying to put a puzzle together without all the pieces. As always, we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

  • The Commercials of ‘WANDAVISION’ Might Be Selling More Than We Think

The Commercials of ‘WANDAVISION’ Might Be Selling More Than We Think

As we’ve seen so far, the commitment to making the first 2 episodes of WandaVision as authentic to the sitcoms of old was pretty next-level. Whether it was the live studio audience, the aspect ratio of the screen or even the audio, it was clear that a great deal of effort was expended both in the planning and execution of making these sitcoms as close to the “real deal” as possible. No network sitcom would be complete without some great advertising and product placement targeting the subconscious of the viewer. To that end, Marvel Studios prepared an impressive and unexpected ad campaign based around the tragedies that have befallen Wanda Maximoff.

These have been widely broken down and discussed but with another episode of WandaVision just a couple of days away, it’s a good time to get your gears spinning again in anticipation of the continued trip through Wanda’s tragic past. So far, both episodes of WandaVision have had short commercials hosted by actors Ithamar Enriquez and Victoria Blade. While they’re definitely following the script of 50’s and 60’s TV commercials, the couple themselves are a bit of an enigma and have been the source of some pretty wild and pretty great theories, including one of great interest: that the commercial hosts are the parents of Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. In all of Marvel Comics there’s probably no more muddled, twisted and retconned backstory than that of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. It seems like most casual fans are under the impression that their father is the classic X-Men villain Magneto, but that’s not been the case for some time, and in fact, in current continuity, Wanda and Pietro are no longer mutants dating back to 2014’s AXIS event. While it’s highly unlikely that Enriquez is Magneto incognito, the case could be made that he’s some version of Django Maximoff, the brother of the twins’ mother, Natalya, and the man that raised them as his own children. If that’s the case, it’s possible that Blade is playing either his wife, Marya, or, more intriguingly, his sister Natalya.

As explained in James Robinson’s 2015 Scarlet Witch, Natalya Maximoff was herself an incredibly powerful witch herself from a line of witches who each held the title of Scarlet Witch before Wanda inherited it. A panel from Robinson’s series was among the many we found in the background of the Expanding the Universe documentary, indicating that it was likely a book that had some influence on the development of WandaVision. The One-Above-All himself has told us that this series will explore the backstory of Wanda and see her truly become the Scarlet Witch, so it’s not completely ridiculous to think that we might just be meeting (or already have met) Wanda’s mother.

As for the nature of the commercials themselves, while it’s clear that they are alluding to the tragedies that have befallen Wanda, there’s certainly some more subtext to them than that. The toaster in the first commercial has widely been interpreted as analogous to the bomb that Wanda and Pietro talked about in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the tagline (“Forget the past, this is your future”) is clearly aimed less at viewers and more at Wanda herself. The Strucker watch in the second commercial is a clear call back to the time she spent being experimented on by Baron Strucker and Doctor List, but its appearance in an episode that reveals time isn’t quite right (Wanda appears visibly pregnant the morning after she and Vision get it on) is also probably relevant.

As we move forward, we can certainly expect to see other tragedies relived (the deaths of her brother and Vision sure to be among them), but let’s also continue to pay attention to the hints to Wanda being trapped, apparently against her will, which are coming through in classic commercial attacks on the subconscious.

A new episode of WandaVision streams this Friday!

Ethan Hawke Joins ‘MOON KNIGHT’ as Its Big Bad

With a March start of production just around the corner, Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series Moon Knight is beginning to fill out its cast. Just the other day May Calamawy joined the cast as the female lead and now today, a trade report claims that Ethan Hawke has jumped on board as the antagonist opposite Oscar Isaac.

Ethan Hawke Sticks Up For Texas, Reps Beto and Turns a Dead Country Singer Into a Legend: Hanging With a Movie Star in Houston Who Just Wants to go to an Astros

Hawke’s role is being kept under wraps (as is pretty much everything about Moon Knight at the moment) and even though Marc Spector’s rogues’ gallery isnt’ quite as extensive as Spider-Man’s, there are still several intriguing possibilities. The 50-year old Hawke has been nominated for 4 Academy Awards and has the range to play anyone from Spector’s crazy brother Randall, to Count Nefaria, to a lead member of the Committee to the Lord of Vampires (early rumors indicate that this series would lean HEAVY into the supernatural and include characters such as Dracula and Jack Russell).

Moon Knight is set to film this Spring and should stream on Disney Plus sometime in early 2022.

  • Charlie Cox Reportedly Already Shot his Spider-Man 3 Scenes

Charlie Cox Reportedly Already Shot his Spider-Man 3 Scenes

In the first episode of his new podcast, Phase Zero, comicbook.com’s Brandon Davis revealed his belief that Charlie Cox has already filmed his scenes for the currently untitled Spider-Man sequel. News of Cox reprising his role as Matt Murdock and/or Daredevil was first revealed last month by our own Charles Villanueva. The film, which Kevin Feige has said will be part of a sort of Multiverse arc that begins with WandaVision, is rumored to see the return of pretty much everyone that’s ever had anything to do with a Spider-Man project. Fans firmly believe that Cox’s Matt Murdock will serve as the lawyer to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker who will be on the run following the events at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

    MCU | Adversion

During the recent WandaVision press junkets, Collider’s Steve Weintraub asked Kevin Feige about Cox’s potential return and while Feige would not confirm it, he did indicate that he Charlie Cox and other actors and characters from prior Marvel TV projects are all fair game to reappear in the MCU’s future slate. Davis’ report corroborates our Lizzie Hill’s belief that Cox was on set during a November Spidey shoot.

Spider-Man 3 is currently set to swing into theaters this December.
