Charlie Cox continues to be a gentleman as the press endlessly asks him about his return to his famed take on Daredevil while promoting his new show Kin. In an interview with Sirius XM, Charlie was unsurprisingly quizzed about a hypothetical return to the role, to which he responded interestingly:
What happens in the comics is a writer and an artist will team up for a run of a comic, so they’ll do 10 issues, 20 issues. If there was an opportunity for me to come back as Daredevil, whatever that would look like, I imagine it would be a reimagining of the character and the show. If they choose me to do it, there are going to be some elements that are of course the same. But I imagine it would be like the upgraded version of the character.
It’s no secret that while the Daredevil Netflix show was excellent in quality, it had certain limitations with how they could push certain aspects of the character such as the suit and the radar sense. In addition to Spider-Man: No Way Home, Daredevil is rumored to appear in Disney+ shows Hawkeye, Echo, and She-Hulk, all of which have substantially larger budgets. Charlie openly talking about his hypothetical, upgraded return is indicative of the talks he’s had with Marvel Studios about a Daredevil reprisal.
The future of the MCU may rest on the shoulders of its spookier properties as evidenced by the greenlighting of properties such as Blade, Werewolf By Night, and by association, Moon Knight. But one Marvel horror property that fans have long been asking for in the MCU is Ghost Rider.
Last we got a live-action Ghost Rider was in the Agents of SHIELD show, which in all fairness, was a substantially good portrayal of the modern-day Spirit of Vengeance, Robbie Reyes. Actor Gabriel Luna‘s take on the character was so beloved that Marvel TV quickly put together plans for a spin-off show that eventually found its way into Hulu. Unfortunately, plans eventually fell through once Marvel Studios dissolved Marvel TV, leaving Luna out of a Marvel job.
Luna spoke to our buddy Adam Barnhardt at Comicbook and shared his thoughts on possibly reprising the role down the line.
I try to stay in the moment. This is interesting, in talking to you, it’s the first time I’ve done some recollection of the experience. You never say no. You always say that it comes down to the story. If it’s a great story and it makes sense and if I still feel the way I felt when I was reading for Jed and Moe that first day with Sarah Finn, it was a few years back, if I still feel it’s just like breathing, that’s what I felt with the character previously, then absolutely.
In the meaty interview, Luna didn’t hesitate to express his wistfulness over the show not coming to fruition. Seeing his passion for the character and the personal lengths he took to try to bring the spin-off to life, it’s hard to blame him. Luna certainly is one of the few Marvel TV actors that would make sense to bring given his show-stealing take. Luna also happens to namedrop major MCU casting director Sarah Finn as the one who booked him the gig so there’s that too.
The live-action adaptation of cult-comic classic Y: The Last Man was abruptly canceled by its network, FX, a few days ago, with barely a full single season to its name. No reason was given at the time but a new report from THR is saying that FX was hesitant to renew the cast’s expiring contracts due to the tumultuous nature of the production.
For the unaware, Y: The Last Man has had a very rocky development process, spanning several years. The series was delayed numerous times as it had a revolving door of talent, in front and behind the camera. This month happened to mark the expiration of the cast’s contracts and due to the expensive nature of the pandemic, FX opted out of a renewal.
It isn’t all grim news as THR is reporting that HBO Max is being eyed as a very likely second home for the series. Given that the Y: The Last Man comic was published by DC’s Vertigo imprint, which in turn is under the Warner Bros. banner, it’s no coincidence that the show would eventually find its way back to its OG home. Once upon a time, Warner Bros. had the live-action rights for a Y: The Last Man movie that never got made.
Finally, after getting delayed for an entire year, Eternals is just around the corner. Disney just held the film’s premiere a couple of hours ago and as always, the first wave of reactions towards the film has arrived. Check it out!
ETERNALS: in style & tone this is easily the least Marvel-like movie in the MCU (it doesn't look like plastic. also, sex happens) & the scale is cosmic in a way that makes the avengers arc feel like a blip. so why is it still just misfit spandex people fighting bad CG for 3 hours
Marvel’s #Eternals is spectacularly weird & rich w/ a new MCU mythology that makes it feel separate from everything else. It’s honestly refreshing. There’s a bittersweetness to the film that you feel in its sunset shots – a definite Chloé Zhao touch. It is soulful & thoughtful pic.twitter.com/pIAFAyhJ4D
I wanted to like #Eternals much more than I did. There’s a lot to like, but the massive story felt at odds with the intimate character development, leaving me without anything to truly invest in.
#Eternals , wow! A lot to unpack. If Marvel movies are a Venn diagram — variations within that overlap — this movie is off the charts. Hands down the most different of any of their films.
#Eternals is DENSE & I felt the weight of the exposition often. Movie’s at its best when the focus is on the Eternals recreating their family – the humor of it & the passion when they fight for each other and the things they love. Also, Angelina Jolie in the MCU is EVERYTHING. pic.twitter.com/rMJz0U2It2
John Wick is one of those rare original IPs in the past 10 years to have actual longevity. What started as a return to form for star Keanu Reeves in 2014 is now a highly successful action franchise with content beyond the theatrical films. The Continental is one of those, a long-reported spinoff centering on the fabled hotel that houses assassins from the film. Deadline is reporting that that project is finally happening as a three-night special event TV with none other than Mel Gibson as its lead.
The Continental will explore the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins, which increasingly has become the centerpiece of the John Wick universe. This will be accomplished through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, who is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the New York’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals. No word yet on who’ll play Winston Scott (the hotel owner is played in the films by Ian McShane).
Gibson has long been recognized for his work on iconic action films such as the Lethal Weapon franchise. No word yet on who Gibson is portraying other than his character name, Cormac. The Continental also marks Gibson’s first foray into TV in decades, having gotten his start on Australian television in the 70s.
DC Fandome isn’t just about the big famous DC characters we all know and love. It also comprises of upcoming adaptations of works under the former comic imprint Vertigo, now called DC Black. One of those adaptations is DMZ, a dystopian political drama set in the heart of Manhattan in the midst of the Second American Civil War. Producer Ava Duverney gave watchers a first look at Rosario Dawson, playing the lead character Alma, a nurse in search for her son.
This isn’t Rosario’s first rodeo playing a nurse in a comic book adaptation. Rosario previously played Night Nurse aka Claire Temple in the Netflix-Marvel a few years ago. Not much else was divulged apart from a few story details here and there.
DMZ should be a very relevant piece of media to check out when it comes out who knows when in HBO Max.
The COVID-19 pandemic not only saw the upheaval of our everyday lives but also big industries like Hollywood. There’s no better example of the change the industry is going through than Scarlett Johansson‘s recent lawsuit against Disney, which she filed in light of Black Widow premiering on Disney+.
While that lawsuit has since been resolved, it wasn’t without impact. A new deal between the Russos and Marvel Studios reported by the Wall Street Journal was allegedly put on hold due to the then-worrying circumstances of the lawsuit. In an interview with Variety, JoeRusso addressed that alleged deal, hinting that the sibling directors may still be in talks with Marvel studios:
It would be inappropriate for us to comment on a deal if we were in the middle of it.
Russo also addressed the lawsuit itself and shared his thoughts on the current state of the film industry.
I’m glad that the lawsuit’s resolved. I do think it was indicative of significant change that’s been happening. The resolution speaks volumes about the respect for artists moving forward in this changing landscape.
The critical success that The Suicide Squad has garnered these past few months doesn’t make it a surprise to know that director James Gunn is keen on bringing some people from that film to work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Composer John Murphy, specifically, has been revealed to be composing the score for the third Guardians film by Gunn himself. In an interview with Cinemablend, Gunn said:
I had to get off of a zoom right before this zoom because I was talking to all of my heads of department. We were going through the finale of the film from shot to shot, to shot, to shot and explaining exactly how each shot was going to be done. Now, this stuff we’re going to shoot in May. So this is about just planning. After I get off of this, I’m going to have to go listen to some music that John Murphy wrote that we’re going to be playing during the movie. … I guess I’m spoiling the fact that John Murphy is doing the score for Guardians. So you guys got a scoop.
Like OG Guardians composer Tyler Bates, who used to be Marilyn Manson’s lead guitarist, Murphy has a knack for writing heavier music for films. His 28 Days Later score is an absolute icon. His work on The Suicide Squad had a refreshing sonic palette that we don’t always hear from the DCEU side of things. Him working on Vol. 3 should be an exciting prospect.
It’s always fascinating to look at how the MCU keeps their villains fresh. More often than not, the villains and their henchmen tend to be just mere brawlers. But in the case of Eternals, the people behind this film seem to be taking interesting swings at how the villainous Deviants will be portrayed. According to producer Nate Moore:
The Deviants in the comics are called the changing people and no two look the same. So in our film, no two Deviants will look the same. When they kill off a predator in the film, they take the shape of that predator. So there’s a bat-like Deviant, there’s a wolf-like Deviant, there’s even Deviants that look like all sorts of creatures from myth and legend and history.
This certainly explains why the Deviants we see in the trailers look like animals. Though the question still stands as to how Thanos, who has the Deviant gene in him, somehow bypassed this ability. Perhaps the Mad Titan’s Deviant aspect will end up being exclusive to the comics and not the films. Regardless, it’ll be exciting to see these shapeshifting powers come to life when the film comes out.
Now that the first season of What If…? has ended, let’s take a look at just how big the show’s biggest moments were with regards to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
T’Challa Makes the Universe Better
In an unexpectedly poignant paralleling of one man’s decency in the real world, What If…? firmly proves that the mere existence of T’Challa makes the galaxy brighter and better, just as the late Chadwick Boseman did for ours. As Star-Lord, T’Challa vastly improved the conditions of the universe; preventing the annihilation of half of life by taming the Mad Titan and continually doing acts of kindness. The episode itself has Wakanda’s prodigal son stealing the Embers of Genesis, potent seeds that can repopulate millions of planets with life.
Strange Supreme is the GOAT
What If…? may have held back on tackling bolder premises but it certainly went all out in showing how powerful these heroes can really be. Doctor Strange, or rather, Strange Supreme, has the most vulgar display of power in the MCU yet during the season finale. Putting to use all the forbidden, arcane abilities he stole from various magical beings in Episode 4 and then some, Strange Supreme puts up a fight with a cosmically powered, vibranium Ultron in the most incredible way. The sorcerer shapeshifts, duplicates Mjolnir a hundredfold, gives everyone invincibility armor, and even swallows a galaxy-ending explosion like a pop tart.
Ultron Unlimited
Like Strange Supreme, Ultron gets a huge glow up in What If…?, allowing Marvel Studios to give us the true Age of Ultron the titular film fell short of delivering. Turns out, Ultron in his intended vibranium-Vision form, wielding all six Infinity Stones makes Thanos and his quest look like child’s play. Ultron achieves multiversal omniscience at the tail end of his extinction agenda, posing a threat unlike any other. It’s a shame that James Spader wasn’t available to give this incredible glow-up justice.
Everyone dies
The MCU has long been the recipient of the criticism that it’s too afraid to kill characters. What If…? rectifies that critique, albeit in a very inconsequential way, by killing our beloved characters left and right. They all get killed in varied ways, starting from Hank Pym’s atomic assassinations in the murder mystery episode and eventually escalating to Mortal Kombat-inspired fatalities in the popular zombie episode. No character has it worse than Tony Stark who dies more times than any other mainline Avenger.
Greatest Fights in the MCU
If there’s one thing What If…? gets absolutely perfect, it’s the fights. The scope and grace that the medium of animation affords these creators is nothing short of astounding. We get matchups that fans have been dreaming of such as Hulk vs. Wanda or Captain Marvel vs. Thor. The fights the creators come up with are so ingenious and creative that end up surpassing what the films have done in many ways.
The Winter Rogers
The anthological nature of What If…? makes it safe to assume that a lot of these stories are as good as done. The exception to that rule, however, is the Captain Carter of it all. Rumored to appear in live-action in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and confirmed to have follow-up stories in the second season of What If…?, it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that the finale ends setting up her next big adventure.
The revelation that the Steve Rogers of her timeline is still somehow alive and in stasis in the Lemurian Star has big implications for her future stories. Could this be another spin on the Winter Soldier saga? Is Peggy destined to find love with Steve 70 years later?
The first season of What If…? is now streaming on Disney+.
