Will Smith Is All For The ‘Suicide Squad’ Ayer Cut

The release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League will go down as one of the rarest instances of fans willing a project to exist. Given the success of that project, it comes as no surprise to see Suicide Squad director David Ayer follow suit with the ongoing campaign to get his Ayer cut released.

Suicide Squad star Will Smith voiced his support for the prospect last night and shared his excitement if it ever happened.

Could Smith be the first of the many Suicide Squad actors to voice their support for this project? He could very well start a domino effect with these comments.

Stats recently surfaced showing just how lucrative the Snydercut was and the numbers indicated a mostly successful endeavor. But at the end of the day, it was a very expensive project to make and was greenlit to boost HBOMax’s subscribers when the service began. There’s no telling what could happen with the Ayer cut as more people come out in support of it but the project may not be so enticing for HBOMax.

  • REVIEW: It’s Good Vibes Only When You Play ‘OlliOlli World’

REVIEW: It’s Good Vibes Only When You Play ‘OlliOlli World’

Murphy’s Multiverse was provided with an early review copy of the game by publisher Private Division.

There’s an evergreen charm to the video game genre of skateboarding. We have the Tony Hawk franchise to thank for the enduring legacy of the genre in the mainstream but also have smaller games like SKATE to thank for innovating and keeping it on its toes. This year’s OlliOlli World aims to celebrate the craft and canon of its predecessors and progenitors in one technicolored, whimsical, stylish, and challenging explosion of a video game.

OlliOlli World might as well be a Saturday morning cartoon. You, the protagonist, are trying out to be the Skate Wizard, the herald of the five skating gods in Gnarvana. The current Skate Wizard wants to retire and is looking for a replacement. With the help of a kooky cast that includes characters named Suze, Gnarly Mike, and a man named Dad, you must prove your mettle across the five gleefully hand-drawn regions of Radlandia.

    https://gfycat.com/powerfulsoulfulkoodoo

It won’t take long for anyone to figure out that the game’s biggest draw lies in its vivid world and vibrant aesthetic. The regions of Sunshine Valley, Sketchside, Los Vulgas, Burntrock, and Cloverbrook have their own distinct looks. For example, Sunshine Valley is all about California sun and sand while Cloverbrook is nestled deep within lush green forests. Within these regions are creatures and beings straight out of a Pendleton Ward cartoon. You have to race a grizzly bear floating on a river at one point. There’s a fish inside a fortune teller machine that gives you challenges. There’s a group of hulkingly buff seagulls that you have to impress. All of these things are hand-drawn and colored to match one’s acid trip.

The game’s true secret flex, however, is the level design. Every level in OlliOlli World feels like an otherworldly roller coaster designed by a 5-year old in the best way possible. The way the game fuses staple skateboarding environments with wacky and maximalist layouts is so seamless. One minute, you’re skating downhill at breakneck speed, the next minute you’re wall-grinding a billboard held up by bees, and you finally land on a curved rail that takes you to a hidden path where a talking bird compliments you.

    https://gfycat.com/ficklequickallosaurus

As for the gameplay loop, it’s simple: you go from one level to another and try to get to the finish line while ticking all the bonus challenges. The more bonus challenges you tick, the more unlockables you have. You rinse and repeat until you eventually become the Skate Wizard. There’s a lot of figurative and literal wheel-spinning in the dozen hours you’ll spend trying to unlock the countless shoes, hats, tattoos, emotes, and outfits. This won’t be the performative gaming experience of the year but it’s a damn fun world to waste time on.

Despite the simplicity of the loop, OlliOlli World does boast a certain level of difficulty when it comes to mastering the game. There’s a depth to the combination of tricks one can pull off. Certain challenges in the game require an immense amount of pinpoint precision. With one universal difficulty level for all players, it may be apt to say this is a game players will need to “git gud” at to get the most out of it.

    https://gfycat.com/ashamedgiftedkestrel

Getting good at OlliOlli World wouldn’t be a problem if it weren’t for the occasionally painful thumbstick controls. The breakneck pace of the game means your left thumb is constantly mapping out crazy patterns with little rest. This isn’t a complaint about the game’s control system but rather, it’s something for gamers that are prone to carpal tunnel issues like myself to keep an eye out for. Thankfully, the game doesn’t demand the most of one’s hands. Players can finish levels without exploring the spectrum of tricks afforded by the game. You can literally ollie your way through obstacles and the game won’t punish you for it.

Lastly, It’s impossible to play OlliOlli World and not be arrested by the game’s soundtrack. Straight out of a “Chill Vibes/Lo-fi Beats For You To Study To” playlist on Youtube, OlliOlli World’s music is unapologetic with what vibe it wants. If the Tony Hawk soundtrack signified the alt-punk ethos of the early 2000s, OlliOlli World’s is about embracing the laid-back and easy-going mantra of the modern millennial. It’s good vibes only for the world of Radlandia.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ Episode Titles Have Seemingly Leaked

‘Ms. Marvel’ Episode Titles Have Seemingly Leaked

It’s almost frustrating to think that we would have gotten Ms. Marvel last year if things turned out as originally planned. The show was one of the Disney+ shows to film early, only for it to be delayed due to uncontrollable circumstances. Currently, the show is undergoing a round of reshoots that hint at key story points in the season. Beyond that, there’s not much information known about the season arc. However, a posting on TV Time seemingly has the episode titles of Ms. Marvel listed, which may give us a sense of what’s going on.

The first episode is aptly titled Kamala Khan: Embiggen! which may dispel those worrying rumors that her iconic embiggening powers would be altered for the show. Lockin’ Jaws is a reference to everyone’s favorite teleporting mutt, Lockjaw. The Woman I Look Up To reads like a Carol Danvers-centric episode, highlighting Kamala’s admiration for the character. My Faith is evidently about Kamala’s Islamic faith, a crucial aspect of the character.

It’s hard to pinpoint just how true these titles are given the inaccuracy of the countdown listen. Some of them undeniably sound suspicious. Based on the countdown, the first episode seems to be dropping on May 13th, which is a Friday. The Marvel shows on Disney+ usually drop on Wednesdays, which rules out certain details of this supposed leak.

  • ‘She-Hulk’ Director Confirms 2022 Premiere and Comedic Tone of Series

‘She-Hulk’ Director Confirms 2022 Premiere and Comedic Tone of Series

She-Hulk director Kat Coiro was recently making the press rounds promoting her upcoming film Marry Me. In an interview with The Wrap, the director shared her thought process when asked to join the Marvel family, confirming the rumored comedic tone of the Tatiana Maslany-led series.

I never choose a project based on genre. And I actually don’t think very much about genre, I think about character. And I think about the emotional lives of the characters and, you know, can I bring something? Can I bring a mix of humor and heart to this? Because that is what I love to watch. And it’s what I love to work with. And so when I stepped into, you know, the Marvel playground — the cool thing about Marvel is that it is an ever-evolving universe and you have straight dramas, and you have very comedic films, and we are in that world where we’re definitely playing with a more comedic world, but it also is still part of Marvel land.

Coiro was asked whether a second season can be expected, to which she affirmed the show’s release this year, following the vague teaser from Disney+ late last year.

I will let Kevin Feige answer that question. For now, we have done a season and it’s coming out sometime this year. And we’ll go from there.

  • Everything You Need To Know About ‘Turning Red’

Everything You Need To Know About ‘Turning Red’

March 11th sees the release of Pixar’s first offering of this year, Turning Red. Directed by Academy Award-winner Domee Shi, the film centers on a kid named Mei, a diligent, studious, and sassy pre-teen who one day wakes up as a giant, fluffy red panda. It’s up to Mei and her support system of friends and her mom to help her navigate life as she enters her first phase of adulthood.

Murphy’s Multiverse were given the chance to attend the film’s press junket that had certain members of the production including Shi herself, producer Lindsey Collins, and their talented crew of production designers and animators. Here are a few things we learned from Turning Red:

Director Domee Shi wanted to create a Pixar film with a female protagonist that was different from the other films

Pixar films have always leaned towards the fantastical and otherworldly. Whether it’s about a superhero family trying to normal lives, a robot living in isolation a millennia later, or a journey through the afterlife, these films are usually far removed from what we recognize in real life. Turning Red seeks to upend that. According to director Domee Shi:

When I first pitched the film, I really wanted it to feel different and unlike any Pixar film you’ve seen before.  This is going to be Pixar’s first contemporary teen girl protagonist and I really wanted the world to reflect her character: colorful, chunky and cute, bold and in your face just like Mei.  The term I used a lot to the crew was ‘Asian tween fever dream.’  We really wanted a fun, specific backdrop to tell this coming-of-age story, so we decided to set it in Toronto, Canada in the early 2000s.

The decision to keep it contemporary goes beyond the surface. The culture and norms of the era play a big part in giving the film such a distinct vibe. Shi adds:

Not just because it’s when I grew up as a tween, but it was also the height of tween-of teen pop mania in the late 90s, early 2000s, you had those boy bands, pop idols.  We also just wanted to avoid social media and just kind of tell this story in a simpler time of flip phones, CDs, jelly bracelets, and Tamagotchis.

Rosalie Cheng was originally the film’s stand-in voice actor and not the star

Rosalie Cheng had no idea she was going to be the star of Pixar’s next big film when she signed on for Turning Red. The plan was to have her voice the protagonist Mei to give the production crew a sense of the character while they were looking for the right talent for the job. As fate would have it, they eventually realized that Rosalie was the right person. Producer Lindsey Collins says:

In our earliest version of this film, we found this local 12-year-old girl right here in the East Bay to record our temp voice for our lead character. And over the next year, we tried to look for other actors to replace her in the final film.  Frankly, nobody came close.  Rosalie Cheng had become the main character Mei and there was no other choice in our minds.

During the junket, they showed me and several members of the press a heartwarming clip of the moment they told Rosalie she was starring in the film.

It’s a film about growing pains

Turning Red is a lot of ideas rolled into one. It’s about puberty and the confusing physical changes that come with it. It’s about transitioning into adulthood while honoring yourself in the process. It’s about navigating through the cultures of your immigrant family while assimilating in a world that feels alien. As director Domee Shi described it, all of these ideas are distilled into a mother-daughter story about “finally embracing change and all of its messiness even if it means saying goodbye to the relationship they once had.”

Expect some fourth-wall-breaking inspired by Lizzie Maguire and Ferris Beuler

Protagonist Mei is as sassy as they come and with that sass comes the opportunity to have one with storytelling. Turning Red opens with a fun opening sequence that has Mei breaking the fourth wall. The inspirations for that choice are unsurprising but are welcome nonetheless. Shi said:

I just wanted it to feel different, in every way.  And I don’t think we’ve done a fourth wall breaking sequence yet in a Pixar film.  And, you know, I grew up loving those classic teen movies like Ferris Bueller but also those terrible but awesome Disney TV channel movies, where they had very precocious, sassy fourth wall breaking characters, like Lizzy McGuire. I kind of wanted to just take that energy and put that in this movie.  It also kind of sets it in this nostalgic time period as well.

Black Panther and Mandalorian composer Ludwig Goransson is doing the score

Producer Lindsey Collins set out to form the best team, from top to bottom, to make Turning Red as great as possible. That task includes hiring the right composer to breathe new life to the striking animation. Collins settled on Ludwig Goransson, a composer and producer who has worked with the biggest artists today and has scored music for the biggest films. Collins had this to say about Goransson’s work on the film:

He brought this perfect mix of traditional score and also a deep early 2000s pop knowledge to the movie. I will say that the leap Ludwig’s score took from early demos to final recording was mind-blowing.  I think largely because he added so many unique sounds and tracks on top of the traditional musicians’ tracks, it just made the film pop for us in a way that we were just thrilled for.

Billie Eilish and Finneas wrote original songs for the film’s in-universe boyband, 4*Town

Just as they set out to hire the best composer with Goransson, the production team also had the undertaking of hiring someone to compose songs for Turning Red‘s fictional in-universe boyband 4*Town. The boyband plays a huge part in Mei’s journey and therefore needed to be a realized thing. With the help of her kids, Collins’ first choice ended up being the songwriting partnership of Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas.

Billie Eilish was relatively unknown but adored by my kids in 2016, and her song Ocean Eyes was playing on repeat in our house.  So when we started thinking about songwriters who could capture the early 2000s sound and bring something fresh to it, Billie’s name came up.  After further research with the Disney music team, we had a better sense of Finneas and Billie and their influences, their style, and figured, you know, why not start with our dream choice?

To nab the biggest popstar and her equally successful producer of a brother, the production set out to make a notebook containing pictures, sketches, and diary logs – as if they were made by Mei herself – to convince them to board the project. The production was successful as Eilish and her brother said yes to Turning Red not too long after receiving the notebook.

Their songs truly brought 4*Town to life.  Finneas actually even sings as one of the band members.  He’s Jesse.  In the end, they wrote three original songs for us.

4*Town was inspired by your favorite boy bands

Being a kid of the 90s, it’s unsurprising to know that Shi drew inspiration from that particular generation of pop culture. 4*Town is made up of a hodgepodge of boy band influences that spans Backstreet Boys and the present-day crazy of K-pop.

They’re definitely a homage to all the boy bands I loved growing up in the late ’90s and early 2000s: Backstreet Boys, N’Sync, O-Town, 98 Degrees.  We really wanted them to also feel like multicultural and even though they are like a homage to the boy bands of that era, we wanted to bring like a little bit of a modern touch to them too.  One of the boy band members, Tae Young, is a homage to the K-pop boy bands that I got into in-in college.

Anime is a big part of Turning Red’s DNA

Turning Red breaks the Pixar mold in a lot of ways, not the least of which is its distinct animation style that heavily draws from anime, a genre that Shi grew up loving. Animation supervisor Aaron Hartline revealed to the press the ways they sought to imbue a recognizable anime touch with Pixar’s signature hi-fi animation.

We wanted to tap into Domee’s passion for the two genres of animation that she loves, anime being the East and Pixar Disney animation being the West.  Turning Red lives somewhere in between these styles.  We took influences from both genres and merged them together.  We often referenced anime eyes on this film.  And one of the great things about anime is that it’s not afraid to push the characters’ designs to the extreme.  The character’s eye shapes can be drastically different depending on the mood of the character. They even add hearts.  Basically, anything to help the characters emote.  In Turning Red, we wanted to use this same eye language.  We added stars, highlights, shrink the pupils down to tiny dots and create crescent shapes for her eyes.  Luckily, Domee had a really strong design sense.  She would give us drawings for how the characters should look.

    Aaron Hartline

Turning Red premieres on March 11 in theaters everywhere and Disney+.

  • Charlie Cox Finally Breaks Silence on Daredevil Return in ‘No Way Home’

Charlie Cox Finally Breaks Silence on Daredevil Return in ‘No Way Home’

A handful of actors are breathing sighs of relief since the film they’re in, Spider-Man: No Way Home premiered a little under two months ago. One of those actors is Charlie Cox, who in his MCU debut reprised his role as Matt Murdock. Cox, for the past few months, has been doing his best to mask his excitement over the truth. That’s now over though as the actor has finally given his first interview since the film’s release.

I don’t think I’ve done any interviews. I still don’t know what the rules are. Obviously, it’s now known that I’m in Spider-Man. So, yeah. But more than that, I don’t know, and the little I do know, I’m obviously not going to say. But the only thing I would say is that for a long time I was asked these questions and I genuinely had not heard anything.

Fans who diligently follow leaks and rumors are aware that Daredevil may be slated for a handful of appearances down the road, with the most likely one being She-Hulk. In addition to that, those rumored appearances are said to feature Daredevil with his Silver Age yellow suit. Should this turn out true, the little Cox knows may not be so little after all.

Cox defended himself a little bit by jokingly stating that while he lied, he hadn’t been lying as long as fans assumed.

For years, I have been asked questions about returning as Daredevil, and the genuine truth was I 100% assumed that was gone, that ship had just sailed. I didn’t hear from any of the folks at Marvel for a couple of years. It does now look like I was lying for a long time, I actually wasn’t, I was only lying for a little bit of time. You still don’t want to spoil it for people.

  • Dakota Johnson In Talks to Play ‘Madame Web’ For Sony

Dakota Johnson In Talks to Play ‘Madame Web’ For Sony

The threat of Sony making more Marvel films themselves looms over our heads as the studio continues to make bank from Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. One of the films the studio is eyeing is Madame Web, a long-rumored project that Dakota Johnson is now reportedly in talks to star in.

The caveat is that sources to Deadline are saying that this project may end up as something else due to the limited appearances the character has had in comics. Deadline is saying that Johnson shot to the top of Sony’s list of A-list stars they want for the film during the holidays. Should this project push through, our own sources tell us that it will film in the Boston, Massachusetts area.

Sony has long been planning to make a female-led superhero film within the realm of the Spidey comics they have access to. Spider-Woman is a film the studio is currently working on with Olivia Wilde attached to direct. In addition to that, projects like Silver & Black and the crazy-sounding Aunt May spin-off are films they have worked on at some point. Madame Web joins the likes of Kraven and Morbius as one of the many Spidey-centric films Sony is working on.

  • ‘It Takes Two’ To Be Adapted For Film and TV

‘It Takes Two’ To Be Adapted For Film and TV

As bad as a year in gaming may seem, there’s never a shortage of truly fun games annually. Last year, in particular, saw an original co-op game titled It Takes Two go head to head with the biggest franchises in numerous award shows. It Takes Two took the highly coveted Game of the Year award in the titular Game Awards, solidifying the notion that original, innovative games still matter in an industry full of battle royales and shooters.

With that in mind, it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that It Takes Two will be adapted for film and television by developers Hazelight Studios and production company Dj2 Entertainment. The project will be written by Sonic the Hedgehog scribes Pat Casey and Josh Miller. In a press release, the team stated:

dj2 is honored to partner with Josef, Oskar [Wolontis], and the incredible team at Hazelight Studios on the linear media adaptation of ‘It Takes Two.’ Just like the rest of the gaming world, we fell head-over-heels in love with Cody, May, Rose, Dr. Hakim and the imaginative fantasy universe Hazelight have created, and can’t wait to bring these characters -and this world- to life on the big and small screen.

For the uninitiated, the plot of It Takes Two follows a couple on the brink of a divorce, who one day are magically transformed into living dolls and trapped in a zany miniature world they must get out of. The gameplay requires two players to solve highly unique puzzles that need both players to work in sync.

There are no film and TV studios currently attached to the project but it’s been said to be in the middle of a bidding war. It should be no time until a big studio gets their hand on this.

  • Live-Action ‘Halo’ Series Will Premiere March 24 on Paramount+

Live-Action ‘Halo’ Series Will Premiere March 24 on Paramount+

A live-action Halo adaptation has been one of those projects in development hell for years; it had Steven Spielberg and Rupert Wyatt attached at one point; it went from Showtime to Paramount+; the showrunners working on it split up. So it came as a surprise several months ago when they finally unveiled the first poster, confirming that the show was, finally, tangible.

Today is a big day for fans as the trailer for the series will be unveiled during the AFC halftime show. And as a precursor to tonight’s festivities, the released date for the series was unveiled: March 24th.

To see the show premiere so soon almost feels surreal. But March 24 is merely a few weeks away, given how February starts in a few nights’ sleep. Within a span of a few days, we’ll be able to see Halo and Moon Knight. To also see the handful of footage in that preview looks so beautiful is exciting. It looks well shot, it’s got a solid cast, and the scope looks impressive.

  • How ‘The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild’ Came To Be

How ‘The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild’ Came To Be

This week’s The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild is the franchise’s sixth film installment. The film is a testament to the franchise’s lasting success which has now expanded to several mediums such as video games and television. Murphy’s Multiverse got to attend the press junket for the film which included director John C. Donkin and longtime producer Lori Forte.

Lori Forte explained why the team behind the franchise decided to give Buck Wild of all characters the spotlight for this film.

Buck is such a lovable character. We just adored him in the first movie and in Dawn of the Dinosaurs. And we always knew [Simon Pegg] wanted to do something more and so we did. We found another way of bringing him back in Collision Course. But it just felt like he deserved his own movie. He deserves his own spinoff because the character himself, he’s just so iconic. He’s clever, he’s an adventurer, he’s a swashbuckler, he’s a protector and guardian of the lost world. It’s such a great, great character to have. We love to go on adventures with him because he’s just not afraid of anything.

For director John C. Donkin, it made sense to make a new film about the evergreen theme of family.

One of the great themes of this film is the family angle. And we loved the idea of once you’re in a herd, which is our family, it’s a herd. They’re equivalent. Once you’re in a herd and you have that connection, it’s okay if there’s some physical separation between you, because there’s always going to be shared love and support.

The notion was enforced further by Forte, who said the coinciding pandemic helped bolster the film’s very timely themes.

I think we started with the story way before COVID obviously happened. So it’s just a universal message for all time. And because COVID happened, it seems strikingly apparent now, that the message about family and staying together, even if you’re not together, and being together, whether you’re not together. I think that all works, but I think it’s a universal theme for any time.
