Kevin Feige Promises ‘Moon Knight’ Will Be a “Tonal Shift” for the MCU

There have been many questions on what we can expect from the next live-action Marvel show starring Moon Knight. The franchise is seemingly exploring new corners of its universe, but it seemed unclear if the family-friendly content so far might truly reach the likes that Daredevil or Jessica Jones offered. Well, it seems that March upcoming release of Moon Knight may accomplish exactly that, as, alongside the reveal of an amazing looking Mr. Knight, Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige promises that the upcoming Disney+ series

It’s been fun to work with Disney+ and see the boundaries shifting on what we’re able to do. There are moments [in the series] when Moon Knight is wailing on another character, and it is loud and brutal, and the knee-jerk reaction is, ‘We’re gonna pull back on this, right?’ No. We’re not pulling back. There’s a tonal shift. This is a different thing. This is Moon Knight

    Kevin Feige

Most of the promotion has teased that Oscar Isaac’s take on the comic character won’t shy away from getting his fits bloody, especially as you can clearly see it on his “moonarangs” and fists. Feige even highlights that “he’s brutal” and we can expect a lot from the project.

Even in the comics, he was more on the darker side of the franchise. So, we might see a completely unhinged Fist of Khonshu which also promises that future entries in the franchise may not shy away from darker storylines and offer visceral action, even if they are on a more family-oriented streaming service like Disney+.

  • REVIEW: Four Parts in and ‘Disenchantment’ Remains Unfocused

REVIEW: Four Parts in and ‘Disenchantment’ Remains Unfocused

The title might seem harsh but there’s something bizarre about Disenchantment. The fantasy series from the creators behind Futurama and The Simpsons tried to offer a different take on the fantasy stories we grew up with. We follow the ragtag team of Princess Bean, Elfo the Elf, and Luci as they embark on various adventures throughout the fictional country of Dreamland, Steamland, and whatever location they can smack the ending of “-land” onto. We’ve now gotten the fourth part – which seems to be the ending of its second season – and somehow the show still feels like it hasn’t changed much since the first episode.

To be fair, the series mostly explores new storylines with each episode. It adds some variety throughout the ten episodes that are given as Bean escapes from Hell, we explore Elfo’s past, she gets a new half-brother, and whatever the writer’s room could think of. The diversity that still feels like it’s part of this universe remains, and it does make for a fun watch. Yet, most of your experience will depend heavily on if you enjoy the core cast and their shenanigans.

That’s kind of the best way to describe the entire experience. It’s nothing more than shenanigans, as episode after episode things just seem to happen. There are teases of a core narrative with Bean’s mother Sharon Horgan‘s Queen Dagmar is always a delight when she appears, but the core narrative seems to just come and go however it pleases. There’s definite world-building at play, but it always takes a backseat throughout most of the adventure.

There’s a big emphasis on John DiMaggio‘s King Zøg finally recovering from the events from the last part as he lost his mind. He does end up recovering but pretty much ends up exactly where he was a few seasons ago. It just feels like characters yo-yo in their character development, especially when what they say simply doesn’t reflect their actions. Bean and her father pretty much repeat the same “lack of lessons” for the sake of comedy that downplays some more heartfelt moments throughout, especially with the return of Ursula.

Bean is affected the most, as while she’s certainly calmer than she was before, most of her actions are still the same. Abbi Jacobson gives a great performance as always but there sadly isn’t much to her character outside of her issues with her mother, who is always a few steps ahead of her. It gets to a point that it is way too predictable that you can see it coming from a mile away.

Elfo finally gets an origin story and it’s mostly what you could’ve guessed from the fact he was the only green elf. Not sure why as even his mother isn’t green but the revelation was pretty much what you expect from the first time it was hinted at some time ago. That’s kind of the thing, there’s nothing really surprising about any of the “major” reveals. They spent so much time foreshadowing it that the revelation is not something to sweep off your chair.

There’s a disconnect between building upon its mythology and the episodic nature of every story. We get introduced to concepts that end up not mattering later on, such as the whole plot point from the opening of the episode. The best part of this series so far is the romance between Bean and the mermaid Mora. Yet, even that isn’t explored outside of minor instances throughout. There’s the potential of a great story at play here but the show can’t decide what they want to focus on.

There’s still some fun to take from the story, as there are some great comedic moments, and it works well as something you can watch on the side. “Last Splash” still remains the best episode of the series and sadly nothing in these new ten episodes could hold a candle to it. While Mora still plays a central role in Bean’s development, it just seems like the season wanted to return to somewhat of a status quo rather than continue to push forward.

  • ‘Cowboy Bebop’s Daniella Pineda Joins ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’

‘Cowboy Bebop’s Daniella Pineda Joins ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’

I am still recovering from Cowboy Bebop‘s cancellation, but it looks like the stars of that series have some new projects on the horizon. Variety has just revealed that former Faye Valentine, Daniella Pineda, has joined the upcoming spinoff series Tales of the Walking Dead. She joins an all-star cast consisting of Poppy Liu, Terry Crews, Anthony Edwards, Jillian Bell, and Parker Posey. Each episode will explore a different corner of The Walking Dead universe and it was also announced that former characters would also potentially make an appearance at some point.

There’s no word on what role she’ll exactly tackle, especially as an anthology series tends to include multiple different storylines. Pineda made a name for herself in TV shows like The Originals, What/If, and The Detour, but also appeared in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and is set to appear in the upcoming Dominion sequel. Her most recent appearance was on the previously mentioned live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, which was canceled after one season.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Joins Margot Robbie in ‘Barbie’

‘Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Joins Margot Robbie in ‘Barbie’

The cast of the Barbie film continues to grow, as in the latest Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision blog it was announced that Simu Liu has joined the production. He’ll join the Margot Robbie-led project that is from the minds of Greta Gerwig – who is also directing the project – and Noah Baumbach. Ryan Gosling is also part of the cast and his casting is another sign of how Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings catapulted him to the top of casting lists. He’s not the only addition, as just the other day we heard that America Ferrera is also joining the film’s cast.

This film is still continuing to blow away expectations, as a film based on the popular doll seems like something that would get rushed out. Barbie isn’t a stranger to cheap productions either, as there are many children-focused films that released throughout the years – and my step-sister forced me to watch with her when she was younger. Given how popular the product is, it seems like there’s a big hope to not only bank on the brand but potentially even create a film that defies expectations similar to how the Lego Movie used a meta-narrative to surprise viewers at the time. There’s still some time before it starts production, but it might become a project to keep an eye out for.

  • Owen Wilson Confirms ‘Loki’ Season 2 to Start Production “Very Soon”

Owen Wilson Confirms ‘Loki’ Season 2 to Start Production “Very Soon”

In a new video by Wired, Owen Wilson appeared to answer a few of the top googled questions involving him. At one point, the topic of Loki comes up and he shares the enjoyment he had working on the project and also confirms that production will start soon. It was hinted at the end of January that Marvel Studios was eyeing a production start in the summer even if Kate Herron‘s replacement still hasn’t been officially announced yet after she left the project shortly after the first season’s finale. Wilson doesn’t give away when exactly only that it’ll be “very soon.”

Yes, he is coming back to Loki and I think we’re going to start filming that very soon. Had a great time filming on Loki.

First off, I love how the actor says the word “Loki” during this interview and he seems to really have enjoyed his time on the production. He also gave one of the most heartfelt performances in the first season and we hopefully might get a lot more from the actor in the MCU’s future as Mobius M. Mobius. Secondly, it’s interesting that they are eyeing a production start so soon without any new director attached to the project. Perhaps they are waiting for the right time to announce, as most eyes are currently on the upcoming release of Moon Knight. For now, we’ll have to wait and see who will take over as Loki faces a new TVA with familiar faces and a new leader in charge.

  • Paramount’s ‘Harbinger’ Adaptation Adds Director Wes Ball

Paramount’s ‘Harbinger’ Adaptation Adds Director Wes Ball

It looks like a project that has been in development hell for some time has finally picked up some steam, as Deadline just reported that Maze Runner filmmaker Wes Ball has joined the adaptation of Harbinger. Paramount Pictures is eyeing an adaptation of the Valiant Comic of the same name that follows a group of teenagers with powers and their conflict with a corporation exploiting their abilities. The script will be written by Andrew Lanham, who recently worked on Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi. It’s part of Ball’s first-look deal with Paramount and his production company Oddball Entertainment.

For some time, the project was being developed by Sony with Dylan O’Brien and Noah Centineo being targeted for titular roles. Yet, it seems that there is currently no talent involved with the projects. It’s unclear when Ball may tackle this project, as he is currently busy developing a reboot of Planet of the Apes for Disney, but the script is being worked on with Josh Friedman involved.

Originally, our own Charles Murphy broke the news on Sony’s original plans for the project back in 2018, where Justin Tipping was eyed to helm the project. It was part of a five-picture deal with Neil Moritz’s Original Film Studio that was eyeing the adaptation of Valiant Comics. So far, the only one realized is still Vin Diesel‘s luke-warm adaptation of Bloodshot. Here’s hoping the project can finally pick up the pace to bring the David Lapham and Jim Shooter series that started back in 1992 for 41 issues. We’ll keep an eye out for further updates.

  • Disney to Announce Netflix Marvel Show’s New Streaming Home Soon

Disney to Announce Netflix Marvel Show’s New Streaming Home Soon

It seems like the news is just not stopping. what started with a sudden inclusion of a deadline on the Marvel Netflix series would end up in a discussion on what exactly was going on. Some believed it might be nothing more than a bug until Entertainment Weekly confirmed it. Not just that, Insider also announced that this change was due to the rights returning to Disney. Now, Deadline has also shared that we might find out what the future has in store for them soon.

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders were all co-produced between Netflix and ABC Studios. Disney is currently keeping quiet on the returning rights, but Deadline shared that we can expect an announcement on their new streaming home sooner rather than later. Plus, it further re-establishes the fact that Marvel Studios can now further explore these characters in new projects moving forward.

At this point, it seems likely given the darker themes of these series they will end up as part of Hulu’s offerings and internationally through the Star branding. Deadpool, Logan, Hit-Monkey, and MODOK were recently released as part of that branding and it wouldn’t be too surprised if it follows suit. We don’t know if these former Netflix Originals might even end up as “Original” series under these new streaming banners.

  • Netflix’s Marvel Show Rights Returned Back to Disney

Netflix’s Marvel Show Rights Returned Back to Disney

Just earlier today, we’ve noticed that something was different about Netflix’s Marvel shows. Some of the shows included the message that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, and the other shows produced together with Marvel TV would be leaving the service on February 28th. EW has gone on to confirm that they are indeed leaving the service, but it was Insider that offered some insight into why this sudden change happened.

Insider was informed by an insider that the rights to the series have returned to Disney. Looking back, while Netflix was streaming the series as originals, they were technically ABC Studios productions – a subsidiary of Disney’s. As such, they were only the distributor and may have supported some of the production financially. Starting in 2018, all shows were canceled as what seemed like a rebuttal to Disney working on their own streaming service.

Some of the actors have started making their return to the MCU with Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio‘s recent appearances. There are even rumors that Krysten Ritter might also make her return as Jessica Jones but there’s silence on the rest of the cast. So, we’ll see if the shows end up being integrated into the MCU or become Marvel TV Legacy projects. There’s no word if they’ll release on Disney+ or even Hulu, but it seems very likely. For now, we’ll have to wait until March to see what exactly the future has in store for these projects.

  • Live-Action ‘Blade Runner’ Series Adds Writer ‘Shining Girls’ Silka Luisa

Live-Action ‘Blade Runner’ Series Adds Writer ‘Shining Girls’ Silka Luisa

There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight for iconic franchises making their return, as Ridley Scott is currently developing a live-action sequel series to the popular Blade Runner series. It will be titled Blade Runner 2099 and is a direct sequel to Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner 2049. Silka Luisa, who is currently showrunning Starz’s Shining Girls series will write and executive produce the project. Scott Free Productions is working on the project in association with Alcon Entertainment and Amazon Studios. We first heard of the project back in November from Scott, who teased that they were writing the pilot and bible for the series at the time.

It’s not the first series adaptation that takes place within this universe, but it is the first to do so in live-action. Blade Runner: Black Lotus was an anime adaptation that was released last year on Adult Swim and Crunchyroll. It was set in 2032 and featured a female replicant voiced by Iron Fist’s Jessica Henwick. Alcon has been busy expanding the iconic franchise after purchasing the rights to it back in 2011.

While Villeneuve‘s film starring Ryan Gosling didn’t leave a big dent in the box office, it went on to become a cult classic among fans and critics. It’s also the second TV adaptation of a popular Ridley Scott project, as his Alien franchise is also currently getting the long-form storytelling format. So, the famous director is going to be quite busy moving forward.

  • Peacock Reviving ‘Megamind’ and ‘Abominable’ With New Sequel Series

Peacock Reviving ‘Megamind’ and ‘Abominable’ With New Sequel Series

We live in an era where cult-classic franchises are getting a second chance, as Peacock is trying its best to remain competitive with the ever-growing streaming market. As such, they’ve decided to release sequel series for two animated classics, Abomination and Megamind. The latter might be the bigger name project that will be revived with the titled Megamind’s Guide To Defending Your City with DreamWorks animation attached.

In 2010, the film introduced us to the supervillain that managed to do what no one else could: defeat their arch-rival. Yet, he learns to break away from his villainous ways and embrace a new heroic future. In this new series, his brain bots will be following him around to make him the first superhero influencer of his world. Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons are on as executive producers, as they wrote the original film. There is no mention if Will Ferrell will return to voice the character.

Amobinable and the Invisible City returns to the story of Everest the yeti, Jin, Peng, and Yi as they find themselves in a new magical world. We’ll once again set off on a heartfelt adventure as they learn about the magic that surrounds them. The original was a charming little project and It’s always great to see them revisit popular films or series to further explore their world. It’ll be interesting to see if the animation can keep up with the originals, as animated TV continuations tend to cheapen on some aspects, and sadly animation is the first to take a hit.
