  • Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Adds Billy Magnussen

Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Adds Billy Magnussen

Aloha Billy Magnussen! It seems that the cast of the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch film is still growing ahead of its production. Magnussen joins Zach Galifianakis and future Lilo, Maia Kealoha in an undisclosed role. Some believe that the actor may be playing one of the aliens with Galifianakis theorized to take on the role of Pleakly. It doesn’t seem like he might be taking on the other iconic role of Jumpa Jookiba or Gantu, but they may also change some of the characters from the original.

We already had hints that perhaps Bubbles won’t be returning and might get replaced with a different character. So, nothing is truly set in stone at this point on how they adapt Lilo & Stitch. It would be fun if they added some Easter eggs from the TV series like Jacques von Hämsterviel or some of Stitch’s numbered siblings. They have more options to play around in expanding the film in creative ways.

Dean Fleischer Camp is set to direct the film and it’ll be interesting to see how they try to bring the loveable yet dangerous Stitch to live-action. They’ll likely not stray too far from his design in the original animated film but just with added textures. Given that he’s an alien, they aren’t restricted to having to make him as realistic as possible. we’ll still have to wait a while until we find out but here’s hoping they can capture that Ohana spirit of the original.

  • First ‘Wonder Man’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Ben Kingsley’s MCU Return

First ‘Wonder Man’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Ben Kingsley’s MCU Return

It’s strange to think that Wonder Man has seemingly started production but Marvel has yet to give it an announcement or tease officially. We’ve heard it from various official outlets but Marvel is surprisingly silent about this new series that likely introduce a major player with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams. Plus, it’s a series set in Hollywood, which makes it potentially the most meta entry in the franchise.

Marvel may not be saying anything just yet, but luckily some set photos give us a glimpse at the show in a familiar face. We first heard that Ben Kingsley would return as Trevor Slattery back in August. So, it’s crazy to see him back on set in the role rocking a rather familiar hairstyle. We last saw him in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which followed up on the short All Hail the King.

We still know very little about what the series will be about or how it’ll explore Wonder Man’s story from Hollywood star to unlikely superhero. There’s also the question of how Slattery ends up back in Hollywood, but perhaps the actor being abducted from prison after being arrested for portraying a terrorist would get any producer’s attention. So, perhaps he is there to pitch his life story as a film to one of Hollywood’s biggest actors, who is hiding his true abilities.

  • Warner Bros. Discovery Stocks Drop After HBO Max Relaunch Presentation

Warner Bros. Discovery Stocks Drop After HBO Max Relaunch Presentation

Well, that’s not a good sign. It seems investors aren’t quite sold on the whole HBO Max renaming, as Warner Bros. Discovery’s stocks have dropped by 6%. Ever since the Discovery merger, the stocks for the company have been facing quite some troubling developments and likely aren’t adding any more pressure to its team trying to balance out its ever-increasing debt that led to the sacrifice of projects like Batgirl or a Scoob! Christmas special.

Overall, the market has been down over Wednesday as Paramount Global, Netflix, and Disney also faced a drop but Warner Bros. had the highest at 5.8%. The Dow Jones index dropped by 38.2 points with the Nasdaq dropping 102 points or 1%. Warner Bros. Discovery held its presentation during trading hours, hoping to push everything in a more positive direction but it seems Wall Street isn’t having it. So, it seems they still have a long way to go at this point.

In January, the company balanced out slightly after dropping below $10, as it now stands at around $15. It’s not a good sign though if they try to relaunch a three-year-old streaming service with a new name and most aren’t seeing this as a positive change. There is no analysis of just how the internet has reacted but the first ones in aren’t loving the name, as it seems to move further away from the brand that could’ve pulled in a bigger audience than a rather standard name like MAX.

  • Second ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Spinoff in Development

Second ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Spinoff in Development

HBO Max and Discovery+ are fusing together into the oddly named Max. Alongside the grand announcement, they have also unveiled a wide variety of series to showcase what they hope to achieve with this rebranding by moving away from the HBO label that they feared would set an expectation of only high-string dramas being part of the streaming service. Mostly, it’s a way to bring the 90-Day Fiancé offerings to the platform but it seems one CBS classic is making a return as well.

Chuck Lorre is seemingly already working on a new series that is set in the same world as The Big Bang Theory, which would make it the second spinoff project after Young Sheldon. It’s no surprise they want to bank on that recognizable name as it ran for an impressive 12 seasons and was one of CBS’ biggest series, which will now stream exclusively on Max. Lorre famously hinted at the plans for multiple spinoffs in a 2019 interview:

Truthfully, the reason for a spinoff is economics, and that’s not the reason to do a show. You should do a show because you have something you really love and you want to do it. Economics follow passion. If you start with economics … well, shit, become a network executive

    Chuck Lorre

The original series actually ended because Lorre wanted to ensure the entire ensemble cast was present and after Jim Parsons, who famously played Sheldon Cooper, decided to move on with his career and instead of forcing it to continue, they wrapped it up. As of now, there’s no real confirmation on what we can expect from the spinoff or who might be its main focus. So, we’ll have to wait a bit before they move forward with the spinoff.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight,’ Ordered to Series

‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight,’ Ordered to Series

You’d think Warner Bros. is all Max’d out after announcing one project after another, but there are quite a few plans to make their re-dubbed streaming service stand out. They continue to promote the cross-platform releases of some of their biggest HBO series even as the former HBO Max has dropped its naming. Among the various announcements is that they have now confirmed that George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg will be adapted as a Game of Thrones prequel.

The series will be titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is quite a long title if you include the Game of Thrones logo being part of its official reveal. The project will explore the story of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire by the name of Egg, who is described as “two unlikely heroes” by the series’ official logline.

Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

The series is described as a more lighthearted spinoff, which would give the Game of Thrones franchise something a bit different compared to its usual fantasy epic drama, which was also the main focus of House of the Dragon. HBO has been quite focused on getting as many series out as possible. The title of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” with a subtitle sounds like perhaps this series will act as an anthology series that could explore different stories throughout its runtime.

  • Netflix Orders ‘Stranger Things’ Animated Spinoff

Netflix Orders ‘Stranger Things’ Animated Spinoff

The Upside-Down is about to look quite a bit different, as Netflix has seemingly decided to move forward with an animated series that takes place in the world of Stranger Things. There is no real info on what exactly the story will be about and if we can expect any tie-ins to the main series, but it seems they at least already have a production company attached.

It seems Eric Robles is working on the series with Flying Bark Productions. He has quite a varied background with series like Random! Cartoons, Fanboy & Chum Chum, and most notably Glitch Techs. The latter was a Netflix and Nickelodeon cooperation, which means Robles has some experience working with the streaming service but there’s now ord if his co-creator Dan Milano is also involved.

This animated spinoff will be executive produced by the Duffer brothers under their new Upside Down label, which is also looking to expand the franchise with a live-action spinoff, a new attempt at a live-action Death Note series, and more. They gave the following statement on jumping into animation with this franchise.

We’ve always dreamed of an animated ‘Stranger Things’ in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling. We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues.

    Duffer Brothers

Stranger Things is one of their biggest IPs and it’s actually surprising how long it took before they attempted to create a spinoff but it worked out as most of the focus remained on the ongoing series, which is set to release its final season at some point in the coming years. It’ll be interesting to see how exactly the horror series translated into a Saturday morning cartoon.

  • New Report Claims ATLUS Has Worked on the ‘Persona 3’ Remake for “Several Years”

New Report Claims ATLUS Has Worked on the ‘Persona 3’ Remake for “Several Years”

The story surrounding Persona 3 has been quite an exciting one. Earlier this year, it kicked off with some random Reseterra rumor hinting at a remake of the iconic game. The irony was that ATLUS was just releasing a remaster of the PlayStation Portable version, Persona 3 Portable. Yet, given that it is a very basic version of the original, it made sense they’d want to modernize the game that kicked off the current version of the franchise.

Just yesterday, we had two more hints at its existence. First off, supposed footage of a remake has found its way online from a potential earlier build back in 2021 that was used for an internal presentation. Not just that, but someone else noticed that a new website similar to P5R.jp and P5S.jp had been uncovered titled P3RE.jp. So, more and more hints were gathering about the existence of this game.

Surprisingly, the news outlet Gematsu has also covered the recent leaks but went one step further. In a second tweet following the report that they “understand” the long-rumored Persona 3 remake has “been in development at ATLUS for several years.”

While we cannot verify the footage itself, Gematsu understands that a Persona 3 remake has been in development at ATLUS for several years.

While ATLUS still hasn’t given an official statement, it does seem more and more realistic that this remake is in development. Most rumors pointed to the project potentially releasing at some point this year, which definitely would be a nice way to get our Persona fix while we wait for any announcement for Persona 6. Here’s hoping there’s no additional delay for the future entry of the franchise due to the development time on this remake.

  • New Domain Registration Further Hints at ‘Persona 3’ Remake

New Domain Registration Further Hints at ‘Persona 3’ Remake

Looks like news and hints are piling on as of late. Earlier this year, we got our first rumor hinting at a future Persona 3 remake. It wasn’t too surprising if it had any validity given the project was voted as the top choice to get reworked by fans and there has been some concern over Atlus remastering the PlayStation Portable variant rather than tweaking the original Persona 3 FES release.

Earlier today, some supposed footage had leaked from a 2021 internal meeting at Atlus. While only a rumor at the time, the footage included one of Persona 3‘s main characters in a new model alongside never-before-seen Sonic Frontiers footage including an enemy that was only featured in concept art but not in the final release. It doesn’t confirm it and is just a rumor but it still is a curious leak.

Now, it seems another hint may have surfaced, as Twitter user @MbKKssTBhz5 has shared a new domain that has been registered in Japan. The title P3RE.JP doesn’t really give away what it is for but would match the naming that Atlus has given its other entries. The microsite for Persona 5 Royal is titled P5R.JP and would match this overall naming. Other titles haven’t received their own site to give a better comparison.

    https://twitter.com/MbKKssTBhz5/status/1645169046290149379

It seems like the naming was set earlier this month in 2023, which could hint that they are preparing the site for an upcoming announcement. It’s not uncommon that these kinds of site registrations are renewed or done ahead of announcements, but with P3 and a “RE” hinting at Remake, perhaps there’s more to this rumor than we thought at first. It’s definitely something to keep a close eye on.

  • REVIEW: ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ is the Mario Film We Wanted in 1993

REVIEW: ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ is the Mario Film We Wanted in 1993

There’s been a surprisingly big discussion online surrounding The Super Mario Bros. Movie after critics seemingly felt quite mixed about the project. Nintendo’s first real foray into producing a project based on their IP mixed with Illumination adds a lot of pressure for this film to succeed. Box office-wise the film is set to break records left and right but the question remains if the plumber’s adventure to the Mushroom Kingdom truly translated well into animation after the questionable first attempt in live-action.

What stands out is that the film is visually stunning and the designs are certainly true to the original game franchise; a sign that Nintendo had close control over their work to stay true to the original. Part of me did wish that the minions got a Paper Mario treatment with some unique standouts outside of a Toad wearing a backpack being one of the main characters. The worlds were captivating and it definitely ranks among Illumination’s more creative works, which was something I had some concern about as their overall design work can be quite plain.

The biggest concern for some was the voice work with the film going all-in with the modern “big name actors” casting choices. Yet, I was surprised by Chris Pratt’s overall performance with some great performances here and there. Seth Rogen could’ve put in a bit more work to give Donkey Kong a more familiar voice, as we also just get his signature laugh in this film. He had some great moments but I won’t lie it felt like a missed opportunity given how iconic his voice is in Donkey Kong 64.

Anya Taylor-Joy was okay as Princess Peach, she gave a good performance but it didn’t really stand out either. The true scene-stealers were Jack Black as Bowser and Charlie Day as Luigi. They both perfectly brought the right energy to these characters even if I do wish Luigi, who is cutely named Lu by Mario in this rendition, was given a bigger role in this film but perhaps we get a Luigi’s Mansion spinoff film one day.

As much as I’ll definitely say I had a blast with the film, it does overall feel a bit rushed at parts. It didn’t really have a strong plot pulled together that would build upon each other but rather just wanted to hit some vignettes with loose character motivation to keep it together. Peach wants to protect her people and is willing to give up everything for it. Mario wants to prove to his family that he isn’t dragging his brother down with him, which actually was the best part of the film’s theme.

Bowser has a neat surprise in his overall motivation that is inspired by some of the most recent entries in the Super Mario franchise, though I wished they kept it a secret for a longer period of time. Its overall issue is that it simply tries too much and doesn’t set a clear focus. We spend time with Bowser and find out his motivation, trying to create a dynamic between him and Mario even though they never face each other to build up to an eventual climax. Yet, it would’ve been great to actually have these two compete, he actively takes his brother away adding to one of the main conflicts in the film.

Luigi taking Peach’s role in the story as confirmed in the trailers is a good way to add something new without falling into cliché territory but it all feels rather disconnected. We spend most of the film’s runtime building up to one storyline that is squashed after a fun action sequence. Mario’s main motivation set early on was probably the best jumping-off point they could’ve given the film but it never truly comes together to become its central theme until the last few minutes.

Yet, even with these issues and Illumination’s usual hyper-fixation on including pop songs in sequences (especially with the now-confirmed fantastic Donkey Kong-inspired song having been scrapped), the film has heart. I still got a bit teary-eyed during the final moments. Mario and Luigi make a great pairing, which I didn’t think the film would make me care about for as little screen time they share. There’s heart here and it overshadows its very easter egg showcase, as there are a lot of them.

There are certainly a lot of Easter eggs for long-time Nintendo fans and likely one of the major draws of this film. It knows it is playing to nostalgia in a big way, which is surprisingly more dominant than what Marvel has been accused of throughout the years. It wouldn’t be too surprised if they use this film as a jumping-off point for spinoffs moving forward and there’s a chance that they could get some of these elements together in a sequel.

Best case, they start taking some more inspiration from Paper Mario or the Mario & Luigi games, as those had some really great storytelling. The first film had to ease viewers into this world but now there’s no stopping them from going all-in. Introduce a new villain in the form of Cackletta and the super memorable Fawful. Introduce viewers to Koopa’s normal living environments that are more than just those minions we witnessed in the film. Otherwise, these films might just end up as more of the same.

Either way, the film is a blast through and through. Yes, it falls into some usual pitfalls but there’s still a lot of fun to have. The jokes land when they land. We have a surprisingly strong cast here that brings it together. Peaches will be trapped in my head for all eternity. The heart that this film has overshadows most of its issues, and while it doesn’t offer too much depth in its story, it still does what it needs to do to keep you engaged throughout. It’s definitely worth a watch and is the Mario film we wished the 1993 film was.

  • No One Can Stop ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ at the Box Office

No One Can Stop ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ at the Box Office

Wahoo! The Super Mario Bros. Movie has gone on to beat even the earliest expectations. Initially, it was set for around $130M domestic opening before it was corrected to a $195M 5-day run. Now, the film hasn’t slowed down one bit as it pulled in enough that set it for a $205M run, which would knock Transformers: Reven of the Fallen to second place and take the record, not just as an animated film but for cinema overall.

Overall, the Easter weekend 3-day gross would place it in third behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($181M) and Furious 7‘s $161M. Overseas it also pulled in $173M by the end of its run and would place it at $377.2M worldwide. Keep in mind, the film hasn’t opened in Japan, Nintendo’s core market, as of now and that could’ve pushed it to $400M if there wasn’t a delayed release.

As such, the film stands strong as the biggest opening for an animated film ever, as it has officially dethroned Frozen 2 from that very spot. The film has pulled in the most patrons since Spider-Man: No Way Home over the 5-day weekend and it’s a good sign for 2023 that we’re seeing a more diverse performance from films, such as Creed 3 becoming the biggest opening for a sports movie.

What makes Super Mario Bros.’ success so interesting is the fact that the film simply fought against its rather critical reception going into the weekend. Perhaps similar to Top Gun Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water, audiences are simply looking for simplicity and thrill nowadays as other franchises try to add complexity to avoid any fatigue setting in. Is this a new era of video game-based games after the success of Sonic the Hedgehog as well, or are we just seeing nostalgia dominate once again?
