  • ‘Squid Game’ Joins ‘Stranger Things’ at the Emmys, First Non-English Language Film to Nab a Nomination

‘Squid Game’ Joins ‘Stranger Things’ at the Emmys, First Non-English Language Film to Nab a Nomination

It has been nearly a year since Squid Game first premiered on Netflix. Since then, the Korean drama has become Netflix’s most-watched show of all time with over 1.65 billion hours viewed within the first 28 days of release. And now, the drama is looking to make history with the Emmys, too.

Nominations for the 74th Emmy Awards were announced this morning and, unsurprisingly, Squid Game was nominated – as was leading man Lee Jung-jae. The series pulled in 14 nominations overall, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. More impressively, though, Squid Game has become the first non-English language drama to secure an Emmy nomination in the main drama category.

Elsewhere, another Netflix hit earned 13 nominations. Stranger Things was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More), and Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series among others. Unfortunately, the show’s young cast looks to have been ignored in the acting categories, with many believing Sadie Sink’s work as Max was overlooked.

While the release date for Season 2 of Squid Game is still up in the air, the final season of Stranger Things is looking to enter production relatively soon. For now, fans can enjoy the first season of Squid Game on Netflix now, as well as the first four seasons of Stranger Things.

  • BREAKING: ‘Captain America 4’ Finds Its Director in Julius Onah

BREAKING: ‘Captain America 4’ Finds Its Director in Julius Onah

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Julius Onah will direct the film for Marvel Studios. Onah, a Nigerian-American filmmaker, is perhaps best known for his work on The Cloverfield Paradox, as well as the critically acclaimed Luce. Captain America 4 will serve as Onah’s biggest film project to date.

Captain America 4, which was announced shortly after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier ended, is being penned Malcolm Spellman, the head writer of The Falcon and the Winder Soldier, and Dalan Musson, a staff writer on the show. As of now, no start date has been announced for the upcoming film.

The film will see Anthony Mackie return as the shield-wielding hero after taking over the Captain America mantle in the Disney+ series. While previous reports suggested Chris Evans might be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for an undisclosed project, it remains to be seen whether or not the project is Captain America 4. In recent weeks, Evans has suggested a return as Steve Rogers is unlikely, as he is content with how his character’s story ended, so it seems unlikely he’ll return for Captain America 4 as of now.

A release date for Captain America 4, which still lacks an official title, has not yet been announced.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Off to a Godly Start at the Domestic Box Office

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Off to a Godly Start at the Domestic Box Office

Thor: Love and Thunder kicked off its opening weekend with a tdlyhunderous night of previews. The fourquel reportedly earned $29 million from Thursday previews, making it the second-best preview figure of the year behind another Marvel Studios flick, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That film, of course, pulled in $36 million from Thursday previews when it opened back in May.

While Love and Thunder’s preview haul didn’t quite reach the heights of the Multiverse of Madness, $29 million was enough to serve as the fifth biggest preview night for a Marvel Cinematic Universe title. Other movies to earn more during preview nights were Avengers: Endgame with $60 million, Spider-Man: No Way Home with $50 million, Avengers: Infinity War with $39 million, and Multiverse of Madness. Recent projections had the film set to open between $140-$160 million stateside with an overall $300 million worldwide opening projected.

It remains to be seen whether critics impact the film’s overall box office performance, or if word of mouth helps to boost the film. After all, while critics have don’t seem to care for the film, audiences are responding to the latest Thor film much better with a current 85% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It is of note, though, that Love and Thunder’s preview haul was double that of Thor: Ragnarok’s back in 2017. That film brought in $14.5 million during its Thursday previews with the movie reaching $46.4 million on its opening day.

Thor: Love and Thunder is now playing in theaters.

  • REVIEW: ‘Boo, Bitch’

    REVIEW: ‘Boo, Bitch’

When it comes to life, there’s only one certainty: death. It’s a subject we often see in mainstream media, however, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is handled all that well all of the time. In fact, death is often used as a ploy to elicit sadness and then all but ignored in most instances. Netflix’s limited-series Boo, Bitch takes a much different approach. It tackles death head on and brings its characters through the grieving process, all while reminding its audience to stop fearing life until death becomes a possibility. The name of the series could be off-putting for some – although it totally works for the show — but Boo, Bitch is easily one of the best young adult shows to debut in some time.

Lana Condor received her big break courtesy of Netflix’s adaptations of the To All the Boys I’ve Loved… books by Jenny Han. So, it’s not entirely surprising that the actress opted to reteam for the streamer for her next project – in which she also serves as an executive producer. That series proved she was able to headline a project and Boo, Bitch only reaffirms as much. Condor stars alongside Zoe Margaret Colletti (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) who holds her own against the actress. Both Condor and Colletti are fantastic and easily outshine most of the supporting cast. They manage to sell the emotional moments just as well as they sell the humorous moments, which isn’t always an easy task to do. One could only hope that their performances in Boo, Bitch will continue to open doors for them going forward as Condor and Colletti prove they’re both leading ladies with Boo, Bitch.

Boo, Bitch tells the story of two best friends in their senior year of high school as they try to make it a year to remember. Having spent most of their high school lives on the sidelines, Erika Vu (Condor) and Gia (Colletti) are eager to leave a legacy at their school and finally be “seen” by their fellow seniors. It’s a simple enough concept, except that things don’t necessarily go as planned. As the trailer teases, one of the girls ends up dying and becoming a ghost, and they’ll both seek to live their best lives before it becomes too late. It’s during this journey to live that Boo, Bitch excels in its storytelling. Sure, there are moments that are ridiculous – the shorthand used between the girls can become too much at times – but the moments are few and far between, thankfully.

One of the most satisfying bits of Boo, Bitch is that it takes on the usual stereotypes we’ve come to know in high school and somehow manages to make them work within its own story. The high-school’s resident bitch is there and incredibly important to the story, as is the school’s dreamboat. While those characters are woven into the story wonderfully, Boo, Bitch does stumble in its tackling of bullying – in that it feels like the bullying subplot is there merely to move the story along. It doesn’t really offer any true substance to the story. Even with that in mind, Boo, Bitch proves to be an exciting young adult series worthy of a watch.

Most limited-series will initially sell themselves as limited, only to leave things open for the hopes of another season. Boo, Bitch is very much a limited series with a complete storyline. Sure, if the creators wanted to, they could continue the story, but there’s no need to because the ending is satisfying. It’s a nice change of pace to have a limited series truly present itself as limited with a story that provides a true beginning, middle and end.

Given the twists and turns that take place in Boo, Bitch, this is a series it’s best to go in with little to no knowledge. The element of surprise only helps to sell the emotional aspect of the story. Overall, Boo, Bitch is a joy to watch. It’s a heartwarming dramedy sure to make us question what we’re afraid of in life and what we’re willing to do to be happy.

  • ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ to Join ‘Black Adam’ at SDCC

‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ to Join ‘Black Adam’ at SDCC

Despite reports initially stating Warner Bros. Discovery was looking to pull back on its presence at San Diego Comic-Con, as the company evaluated the costs spent on the convention, it looks like its DC features will be making a presence. Earlier today, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced that Black Adam was heading to Hall H at Comic-Con later this month. Now, it looks as though Shazam! Fury of the Gods is also set to make waves in Hall H on the 23rd.

The news was announced through the film’s social media accounts, using a short promotional video to tease the film’s SDCC presence. “Just being a tease,” is uttered by Zachary Levi‘s titular character being the screen fills with a simple message. “San Diego Comic-Con. Saturday, July 23rd.”

It remains to be seen what other titles will join both Black Adam and Shazam! at Comic-Con. While The Flash is set for release next summer, the film’s star is currently facing a slew of dangerous allegations. This leaves the recently wrapped Batgirl, and the currently filming Blue Beetle, as other possibilities that could be included in Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC presentation. For now, we’ll just have to wait for official confirmation, but it seems despite the new management, DC is still looking to leave its mark at Comic-Con.

    ‘Black Adam’ Heading to SDCC

The Rock is cooking up an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took to his social media today to announce that Black Adam will be heading to Comic-Con later this month. Details regarding Warner Bros. Discovery’s SDCC plans for DC have been relatively unclear. While it was known that Netflix would be bringing Sandman to the convention, joining HBO Max’s animated Harley Quinn series, this marks the first confirmation that fellow DC property Black Adam will also be showcased at the event.

Black Adam will take the stage in Hall H on Saturday, Jul 23rd. Johnson seems to confirm he will be in attendance for the event, too, ending his post with “I’ll see you then…”

Starring along Johnson in the film are Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Black Adam hails from director Jaume Collet-Serra, who helmed the feature from a script by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.

  • Daredevil, Kingpin Confirmed to Return for ‘Echo’

Daredevil, Kingpin Confirmed to Return for ‘Echo’

Rumors have swirled for quite some time, but now it’s official. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are returning to reprise their roles as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, respectively, in Marvel Studios Echo.

When Marvel Studios confirmed the cast for Echo back in May, many fans were quick to note the absence of both Cox and D’Onofrio. However, as is often the case, the initial casting announcement only included a handful of cast members: Alaqua Cox as Echo, Devery Jacobs (ReservationDogs) and Graham Greene. Joining them will be Chaske Spencer (The Twilight Saga), Tantoo Cardinal (Wind River), Cody Lightning (Four Sheets to the Wind), and Zahn McClarnon (Reservation Dogs), reprising his role as Maya’s dad, Willie Lopez. It is currently unknown how many episodes the actors will appear in, however, they are also rumored to be joined by former Defender, Krysten Ritter, who has long been rumored to reprise her role as Jessica Jones. Interestingly, while THR does address the Ritter rumors, the outlet does not confirm or deny her potential appearance in the series.

As for how Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil will be incorporated into the series, THR reports that Echo is set to feature a plotline in which Daredevil is on the search for a former ally. Cox starred in all three seasons of Daredevil and also starred in the team-up series, The Defenders, while D’Onofrio played Wilson Fisk on Daredevil for all three seasons.

Cox most recently appeared as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home, while D’Onofrio recently appeared alongside Alaqua Cox in Hawkeye. Production on Echo has been underway in Atlanta since May. As of now, Echo has no release date.

According to Deadline, the fourth Thor film opened to an estimated $15.7 million across 17 international box office markets including Korea, Australia, Italy and Germany. • ‘Money Heist: Korea-Joint Economic Area’ Soars into Netflix Top 10

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area is the latest Korean-made series to top Netflix. After releasing on Friday, June 24th, the series has taken first place on the streaming giant’s Global Non-English top ten chart over the last week. That means it achieved the feat in just three days, having been played for 33.7 million hours. It also served as the top show in South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

Joint Economic Area makes for the latest Korean series to top Netflix. Last year, Squid Game became an overnight sensation, and this year, All of US Are Dead, Juvenile Justice and Business Proposal have all managed to hit #1 with global audiences. The success of Joint Economic Area shouldn’t be too surprising, of course, as the show is a remake of the hit series Casa de Papel, aka Money Heist.

“As a big fan of the original Spanish series, I felt intrigued to tell this vibrant story in a Korean context,” writer Ryu Yong-jae said in a statement to the press.

The streaming giant is said to have worked closely with the creators of Joint Economic Area in order to ensure the remake felt authentic to Korea, while also retaining the social commentary that was established in the original series.

“We were very lucky when we received this pitch from Ryu and the producing team, which felt like the right framework for a remake that would be respectful to the original while bringing something new that fans in Korea and globally would appreciate,” said Keo Lee, director of content, Netflix Korea.
