  • ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Series to Use StageCraft Technology

‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Series to Use StageCraft Technology

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is set to continue the trend of Disney affiliated productions to utilize Industrial Light & Magic’s (ILM) StageCraft LED systems. The upcoming Disney+ series will specifically be the first project to be produced on their newly built Vancouver stage.

This type of technology came into prominence with The Mandalorian and has risen in notoriety thanks to the ability to digitally create settings that look realistic for both the performers working on them and the fans watching the series. Since then, the StageCraft technology has been used for the productions of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. The Vancouver stage is the fifth permanent StageCraft volume created by the division of Lucasfilm, with two others in Manhattan Beach, one at Burbank’s Walt Disney Studios, and the other at Pinewood Studios in London.

Upon the announcement of this technology being used for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, novel author Rick Riordan spoke about his excitement for how it will positively impact the show.

The story of Percy Jackson has such an epic scope. I am over the moon that we have forged such a great relationship [with ILM] to give this show such a cutting-edge look and feel.

    Rick Riordan

The series is set to star Walker Scobell in the titular role of Percy Jackson. As well, Leah Sava Jeffires and Aryan Simhadri will be in co-leading roles as Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood, respectively. Production for the series began in early June with director James Bobin helming the pilot episode. It certainly will be interesting to follow how this series progresses with this advanced technology enhancing its visual experience.

  • Chris Pratt’s Mario Portrayal to be ‘Unlike Anything You’ve Heard in the Mario World’

Chris Pratt’s Mario Portrayal to be ‘Unlike Anything You’ve Heard in the Mario World’

Chris Pratt is ready to bring something new to the Mario landscape, whether we’re ready to or not. While talking with Variety during the premiere of his new Amazon Prime series The Terminal List, the actor discussed the direction he will take for the upcoming Illumination Entertainment and Universal film being produced based on the popular Nintendo character.

I worked really closely with the directors and trying out a few things and landed on something that I’m really proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear. It’s an animated voiceover narrative. It’s not a live-action movie. I’m not gonna be wearing a plumber suit running all over. I’m providing a voice for an animated character, and it is updated and unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before.

    Chris Pratt

This quote from Chris Pratt certainly piques interest into what exactly is planned for this film adaptation of the Super Mario Bros franchise. Many questions and concerns have been raised about Pratt’s casting and the risk of him providing a needlessly stereotypical performance. Though having a wildly different interpretation of the character also runs the risk of alienating audiences familiar with the source material for the sake of fitting a square peg in a round hole with Chris Pratt as Mario. His involvement with the film also has come with a large amount of fatigue based on the actor being cast in a large swath of animated projects portraying the main protagonist.

Pratt’s analysis of his performance also comes off of Illumination’s CEO Chris Menedandri giving high praise for what the actor is bringing to the role. It will be interesting to see whether these quotes end up holding actual merit, or are simply a means to draw empty good-will and early marketing towards the project.

Along with Pratt, the untitled film is set to co-star with the likes of Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Seth Rogen. The film is being directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic of Teen Titan Go! fame and is scheduled to release on April 7, 2023.

  • Elle Callahan Set to Write and Direct Adaptation of Graphic Novel ‘Hotell’

Elle Callahan Set to Write and Direct Adaptation of Graphic Novel ‘Hotell’

Filmmaker Elle Callahan is officially slated to direct the film adaptation of the graphic novel Hotell by author John Lees and illustrated by Dalibor Talajic. She will also work to adapt the book into a screenplay with Anthony Ruff. The film is currently in development with AWA (Artists, Writers, & Artisans) Studios. In a quote provided to Deadline, Callahan discussed looking forward to bringing the graphic to the silver screen.

I’m very excited to be working with AWA to adapt John Lees’ terrifying graphic novel Hotell. I aim to tell stories that push the horror genre in new directions – and my plan for this piece involves a very unique approach to the storytelling. This horror will feel all too relatable, and no doubt keep you up at night.

    Elle Callahan

In addition, author John Lees discussed his excitement over his graphic novel being adapted for film.

Hotell has been such a fun, rewarding comic to work on with Dalibor, Lee, Sal and the AWA team. The setting of Pierrot Courts works as a canvas within which you can tell all kinds of different horror stories, from the harrowing to the blackly comic, and introduce all manner of different characters. It’s also a world ripe for new interpretations, and I’m so excited to see how Elle Callahan will bring our haunted hotel to the world of film.

    John Lees

Hotell is set at the mysterious Pierrot Courts Hotel, a location not found on any maps despite its access via Route 66. The story is home to a plethora of mysterious characters and the dark aesthetic has the potential to translate well into a film adaptation. It will certainly be interesting to follow what direction this film takes and learn more about the creative team behind it.

  • Sebastian Stan Set to Star in New A24 Thriller ‘A Different Man’

Sebastian Stan Set to Star in New A24 Thriller ‘A Different Man’

Sebastian Stan will star in A24’s latest production, the physiological thriller A Different Man. Stan joins Renate Reinsve and Adam Pearson, who are also set to be in lead roles for the film. A Different Man is written and directed by Aaron Schimberg (who worked with Pearson on his 2018 film Chained for Life). Production for the project is slated to begin next month in July.

The film is said to follow a man named Edward, an outcast based on his disability, who desires a new start on life away from his struggles. Following a facial reconstructive surgery, Edward becomes fixated on a portrayal of him and his past life in a stage production. Based on this description, it can be assumed that both Stan and Pearson will be portraying Edward in different stages of his life.

This film has the potential to continue a long-line of success for Stan, including his time as Bucky Barnes in various projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jeff Gillooly in I, Tonya, and most recently his critically acclaimed performance as Tommy Lee Jones in Pam and Tommy.

Meanwhile, for A24, it will certainly be noteable to see if A Different Man will follow the continued critical success for the independent studio. With Everything, Everywhere, All At Once becoming the young studio’s most commercially successful film, more attention will turn to the projects distributed by the New York City company. This news also comes within days of their newest release in Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, a film that has already been receiving rave reviews ahead of its release this Friday. Not to mention the murderer’s row of critically acclaimed and award-winning filmography A24 has to offer such as Minari, The Green Knight, The Lighthouse, The Farewell, Eight Grade, and Hereditary

A Different Man certainly holds big expectations on that front and hopefully, Aaron Schimberg’s newest project will join this lofty pantheon of modern films.

  • TNT’s ‘Snowpiercer’ Set to End After Fourth Season

TNT’s ‘Snowpiercer’ Set to End After Fourth Season

After a successful run on the TNT network, Snowpiercer is set to finish its run with their upcoming fourth season. The show was based off of the critically acclaimed Chris Evans-led 2013 film of the same name made by Bong Joon-ho (which in itself is based off of the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob). Set in the same universe, but a few years before the film, the Snowpiercer series followed Jennifer Connelly’s Melanie Cavill and Daveed Diggs’ Andre Layton on the titular luxury train as they deal with the socio-political ramifications of class warfare in the midst of the aftermath of global catastrophe.

In a statement made by a TNT network spokesperson today, they talked about their appreciation for the team behind the show for its successful run on the network.

We can confirm that Snowpiercer will end after a successful, multi-season run on TNT. Its talented writers, actors and crew took an extraordinary premise and brought it to life in thrilling ways. It was critically acclaimed, had a significant impact on the post-apocalyptic genre, and now remains in the hearts and minds of fans forever.

    Turner Network Television

The news of the show’s end comes in line with mass turnover in the way WarnerMedia is handling its entertainment properties since the merger with Discovery and the appointment of David Zaslav as the new President and CEO of the company. A focus to consolidate resources, focus on fewer channels of media (namely the HBO Max streaming service), and emphasize cost effectiveness. With it, a recent edict was in place to end work on any new scripted series for both TNT and its sister network TBS. It remains to be seen the success of this new change, but ultimately the end of Snowpiercer continues to mark an emblematic change in the overall direction of WarnerMedia.

  • Lady Gaga in Early Talks to Play Harley Quinn in ‘Joker 2’ Musical

Lady Gaga in Early Talks to Play Harley Quinn in ‘Joker 2’ Musical

In what has certainly come as a surprise in the news of the Joker sequel, globally renowned pop star and Academy Award nominated actress Lady Gaga has entered early talks to play the role of Harley Quinn in the Todd Phillips written and directed Joker: Folie à deux. She would, in theory, star alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, though he has technically not signed on yet to the film despite the announcement of the Joker sequel a week ago. It will certainly be interesting to note the potential interpretation differences between Gaga and Margot Robbie’s portrayal (who has been a rare consistent bright spot in the DC Extended Universe films). There is certainly the chance that this film continues the trend of deviating from the comic source material of characters like the original Joker did, which would help differentiate the variants of the two Harley Quinns.

Though the more unexpected element of this news is that the film is slated to be a musical. There are many questions to be asked about how Todd Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver ended up with this direction for the film. It certainly is a massive deviation from the dark and dreary Taxi Driver-inspired drama that was 2019’s Joker. This is especially the case coming from the wide-scale commercial and critical success of the original through being the fourth highest grossing R-rated film of all-time and racking up 11 Academy Award nominations. Though there is no arguing that it will stand out as an original premise within the superhero film landscape.

As of this writing, Joker: Folie à deux. does not yet have a release date.

  • Title for ‘Knives Out’ Sequel Officially Announced

Title for ‘Knives Out’ Sequel Officially Announced

Official news has begun to arrive for the upcoming Knives Out sequel, which will be releasing exclusively on Netflix. In a thread of tweets from director Rian Johnson, the full title for the film has been revealed as Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The tweet also confirms a “holiday season” release for the highly anticipated sequel. Netflix officially made the purchase for the sequel film rights in 2021 for $469 million dollars. This includes Glass Onion and an additional film in the Knives Out franchise down the road.

Daniel Craig is set to reprise his role of detective Benoit Blanc and will be joined by all new all-star cast likely full of prospective suspects. Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista fill out the ensemble for the sequel. Not much is currently known about the plot, nor the nature of its mystery; however, in his Twitter thread, Johnson discussed how Agatha Christie mysteries served as an inspiration, specifically her ability to provide great variance in the types of mystery stories she told. This is certainly interesting as it means the original film might not provide much of a sense of what to expect from Glass Onion. Set photos showed the film will be at least partially set in the Mediterranean so that at least will greatly differ from the chilled New England autumn aesthetic of Knives Out filled with the sweaters of Chris Evans. It will certainly be interesting to learn more information on what is in store for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in the coming months heading towards its release later this year.

  • How ‘Thunderbolts’ Could Setup MCU’s ‘Dark Reign’

How ‘Thunderbolts’ Could Setup MCU’s ‘Dark Reign’

With the official announcement of a Thunderbolts film in the upcoming film slate of Marvel Studios, many have begun to theorize how both the film and the team will fit into the developing landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though after some time reflecting on the news, it seems possible that Thunderbolts will not simply just “fit into” the landscape of the MCU, but rather become a critical lynchpin for the narrative direction of many franchises within the shared universe.

From my perspective, Thunderbolts will be the coup de grace in ushering in an interpretation of the comic-inspired Dark Reign storyline to the film version of Earth-616. In this piece, I will be mapping out the road that hypothetically leads to the formation of this massive status quo change, how the team can function in the midst, and the catalyst of their downfall.

    Origins

This part of the MCU storyline is the easiest to trace as it has already begun. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine has very much been positioned to become the figurehead of this new arc. This is especially the case with the passing of Thaddeus Ross’ actor William Hurt and the impossibility to have Norman Osborn exist outside the Spider-Man bubble of the MCU. As seen in Black Widow and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Val is in the midst of forming partnerships with characters that have morally gray allegiances in Yelena Belova, John Walker, and (potentially) Helmut Zemo. Logic greatly dictates that these are the first steps towards the formation of the Thunderbolts team, and is seemingly all but confirmed with the film announcement earlier this week.

Audiences should absolutely expect to see Louis-Dreyfus back in the numerous Marvel Studios projects throughout 2022. Ms. Marvel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and especially She-Hulk (a superhero legal-based series that is bound to have ample amounts of morally gray characters) feel like natural points for where Val could show up next. One specific concept in my mind is Julia Louis-Dreyfus making a surprise appearance in a Thor: Love and Thunder post-credit scene to recruit a scorned Ares after the decimation of Olympus at the hands of Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher. While Val can certainly be involved in recruiting more characters beyond 2022, there needs to be a turning point for this storyline at some point and there is a natural point at which this can occur.

    The Catalyst

The MCU has often made major alterations to their interpretations of comic storylines but ultimately kept similar ramifications to the future of their stories. With that in mind, Marvel Studios has the perfect opportunity to use the upcoming Secret Invasion as a means to launch their version of a Dark Reign like the comics. No matter what direction Marvel takes with this series, it would be a logical decision for it to end with Val and her fully actualized team of “approved” heroes taking the place of Norman Osborn in the comics and being the ones who very publicly eradicate the threat of Skrulls.

This event can serve a two-fold purpose for the immediate future of the MCU. Firstly, Secret Invasion could very well be seen as the last straw for the world as its citizens have had to deal with growing dangerous threats to their lives since “The Blip” and have officially turned on the superheroes that have saved them many times before on a large-scale level. Secondly, people within positions of power would only trust and allow the government-sanctioned Thunderbolts team to regulate the issues that arise on Earth.

    The Dark Reign

And from there, the MCU version of the Dark Reign can commence and could play a major role in a large swath of future projects. The Thunderbolts team can and should be present in different forms in essentially any project-based predominantly on Earth. For instance, the Thunderbolts should be the main opposition for the Hulk(s) on Earth within the World War Hulk film rumored to be in development (assuming it takes those cues from the comic event).

As well, they should serve as a foil for whatever political espionage mission Anthony Mackie’s upcoming Captain America film. Essentially, the new status quo for pure heroes post-Secret Invasion should be dealing with their ostracization from societal acceptance and working towards proving the trust they should deserve from the general public.

Another angle I would further develop in this Dark Reign is the bureaucratic mission to prevent young heroes from becoming active in the world as has been developed in the likes Spider-Man: No Way Home and Ms. Marvel. This would set the stage for the Young Avengers to form as a counter-response towards the world generally losing faith in the Avengers team that has been instrumental in saving the world numerous times.

Meanwhile, the Thunderbolts film can serve as an exploration of the core team of reformed villains as they deal with the very public spotlight attached to them and how they react to it. Some fully buy into the Kool-Aid of their role as heroes, while others grow skeptical that what they’re doing is actually the “right thing”. There is certainly lots of room to play with this type of social commentary through the lens of bombastic superhero action within the MCU, both in the film itself and in the duration of this phase of the MCU.

    Endtimes

However, this storyline won’t last forever as the status quo and much like the comics, a new Heroic Age can rise in its aftermath. In terms of how Marvel Studios should sunset Dark Reign, I would use the formation of a new official Avengers team and film (not to be confused with the Young Avengers) as the means to end this phase. Specifically, the Siege comic storyline should be adapted with Val completely breaking bad and using her influence and team to begin an attempted conquest of places that serve as “threats” to the safety of the rest of the world (i.e. New Asgard, Wakanda, and Ta Lo).

At this point, the world needs the Avengers and their reuniting with a fresh line-up could serve as a massive event that would be satisfying both emotionally and commercially. From there, the stage can be set with an Avengers team leading the charge in whatever the endgame of the multiverse saga will be within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As well, the Thunderbolts team could still exist within the framework of the MCU as a place for villains and anti-heroes looking to reform their image, but this time without the baggage of being a front for Valentina’s nefarious scheme.

In addition, the idea of a prejudiced world against super-powered individuals can still ruminate beyond the end of Dark Reign and into the introduction of mutants in the not-too-distant future. Ultimately though, no matter what specific direction they take when it comes to Thunderbolts and its surrounding future projects, the stage is set for Marvel Studios to transition its universe into a new long-term dynamic that can be as defining as the Infinity Saga.

  • ‘Duke Nukem’ Film in Active Development with Legendary Entertainment

‘Duke Nukem’ Film in Active Development with Legendary Entertainment

News has officially broken on a creative team for an upcoming film based on the popular 1990s video game franchise Duke Nukem. Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, creators of the popular Karate Kid revival series Cobra Kai, are set to produce this film. Legendary Entertainment has picked up the film rights to the project from Gearbox.

No writer or director is currently attached to this iteration of the project and an active search is currently underway. Though it might not be a surprise to see at least some creative involvement from the trio of producers based on their previous line of work. Whether that be the three of them creating Cobra Kai, Heald writing Hot Tub Time Machine, or Hurwitz and Schlossberg helming numerous projects in the Harold & Kumar franchise.

The Duke Nukem video game franchise began in 1991 and has officially made over $1 billion throughout its various games. Duke Nukem follows the adventures of the titular hero in various pastiches of 1980s action movies with him serving as the stereotypical protagonist based on films of the era dealing with a mass alien invasion within Los Angeles. Their games were a major part in introducing the mainstream success of first-person video games within the industry.

With the popularity of the video games and their basis within over-the-top action movies, Duke Nukem has been a long-sought-after film adaptation. However, it’s consistently been within “development hell” despite numerous attempts to green-light the project. Most recently, Gearbox had an adaptation in the works with Paramount Pictures that would have had John Cena in the lead role, but it ultimately fizzled out over time.

It remains to be seen what direction will be taken with this film and if this trio of producers and Legendary Entertainment will finally be able to get this film off the ground and into production.

  • Chris Evans Discusses the Challenges of a Potential Return as Captain America

Chris Evans Discusses the Challenges of a Potential Return as Captain America

While on the press tour for Pixar’s upcoming film Lightyear, star Chris Evans has discussed a wide variety of topics about the film and his career. Naturally, his time within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America would be a talking point. This is especially the case with rumors that have long been circulated that Evans has already signed on to return as Steve Rogers for at least one more future project, even after his send-off in Avengers: Endgame. However, in an interview with Phase Zero, Chris Evans has seemingly shot down those rumors as he discussed the potential personal risks of returning to the role.

I don’t want to disappoint anybody, but I just don’t know…it’s tough, it was such a good run and I’m so happy with it and you know, it’s so precious to me. It would have to be perfect. It would just be scary to rattle something that is so dear to me. And that role means so much to me, so to revisit it would be a tall order.

    Chris Evans

The concerns from Evans are certainly valid as Steve Rogers had one of the most successful runs as a character across the board as Captain America throughout his near decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To make a return would run the risk of at least slightly spoiling his immaculate seven film run. Though if there is any film studio that could best handle the gravitas of Captain America, it would be Marvel Studios. They’ve successfully shown this the skill to handle irreverent returning characters from other cinematic franchises within the past year between Patrick Stewart returning as a variant of his ever-popular portrayal as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprising their respective versions of Spider-Man to mass creative, critical, and commercial success in Spider-Man: No Way Home. If Marvel Studios has been able to find this success with legacy franchises, one could certainly think it’ll land with returning legends from the Marvel Cinematic Universe itself.

Ultimately, time will tell on if Chris Evans will indeed return as Captain America and the full story on when it may have been agreed upon.
