  • ‘Barry’s Anthony Carrigan Joins ‘Superman: Legacy’ as Metamorpho

‘Barry’s Anthony Carrigan Joins ‘Superman: Legacy’ as Metamorpho

Seems like James Gunn has been quite a busy casting for his upcoming film Superman Legacy. While all eyes were on who exactly would end up taking on the role of Superman and Lois Lane, he has been quietly gathering some other DC Comics heroes that’ll have an unknown role in the project. Recently, it was revealed that Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced have joined the production in some familiar roles to comic fans. Now, one more has been added to the list.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the classic character of Rex Mason, better known as Metamorpho, has joined the cast. He will be played by Anthony Carrigan, who recently had a standout role in the HBO series Barry and even showed up in the DC series Gotham. So, he’s not new to the world of heroes.

Seems these announcements and finalized casting choices are being made with the SAG-AFTRA strike on the horizon. The film is set to release on July 11th, 2025 but if the strike moves forward, they’ll have to push back the release quite a bit as they were eyeing a production start early next year. With some time to go, who knows what else might happen by then as well.

The big question is what role these heroic characters will have. Who knows if they are an actual integral part of the story, which would be a shame given the importance of giving Superman his own film that is less pure set-up but an introduction to this new world. It makes you wonder if Gunn is more focused on setting up his new DC Cinematic Universe but it’s a given as he’s the CEO of DC Studios and the director/writer of the first “true” entry in the franchise.

  • New ‘Deadpool 3’ Set Photo Offers First Look at Hugh Jackman in Comic-Accurate Wolverine Suit

New ‘Deadpool 3’ Set Photo Offers First Look at Hugh Jackman in Comic-Accurate Wolverine Suit

Just recently, we had a first look at Ryan Reynolds‘ new Deadpool costume in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe threequel. As the entry was moving away from 20th Century Fox, many were hoping this meant we’d also get Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine to finally wear a comic-accurate costume of his own. His return gave many the hope that we’ll finally give the actor the chance to have one last go after Logan to be a bit closer to the comics.

Luckily, the latest set photos from the production have finally confirmed that he will, in fact, wear the iconic yellow outfit from the comics. It seems strongly inspired by the Astonishing X-Men run and it’s crazy to see the actor actually wear a costume that isn’t just black leather or a brown jacket. Even X-Men: Days of Future Past only gave him some yellow highlights and remained true to the 2000s X-Men franchise.

It is bonkers to think that he’s been playing the character for over 20 years and never had the chance to actually don the iconic suit. Deadpool 3 is the perfect time for his character to return and get that iconic look, as it blends the two worlds together in a potential multiversal storyline. Plus, it would’ve been a shame for these two giants not to meet with the entire Deadpool franchise building up to their eventual meeting.

  • ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Holds On as the New ‘Insidious’ Takes the Top Spot

‘Indiana Jones 5’ Holds On as the New ‘Insidious’ Takes the Top Spot

That B+ AudienceScore is showing its fangs, as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has slipped to the second spot in its second weekend. While not every blockbuster needs to hold on to the top spot, the film simply had a disappointing $60M opening with a $295M production budget. It would need to make at least around $800M to make its money box, and it’ll need to leg out to make back its money.

Though, while some are calling this a bad slip, it still dropped “only” 56% from its opening weekend. Putting that into perspective with The Flash opening to a $55M but slipping by 72% with a similar rating shows that Indiana Jones at least has some staying power moving forward. Though it also has quite a bit of competition that might bring that hold to a quick end potentially, it drop still could’ve been better which may be why the reactions are surfacing as they are.

The big winner of the weekend was Insidious‘ return with a $31.4M opening weekend, which is slightly beyond the initial expectations. Insidious: The Red Door was created with only $16M when compared to other films and has shown a curious twist of smaller budgets making up for bigger blockbuster releases. Though, horror moviegoers remain committed while the general audience is a bit more cautious at the moment.

Joy Ride is the other major release of the weekend that opened with $5.85M. While many are pointing to “smaller budget means more money,” it does seem like that isn’t always the case. The irony is also that the original small-budget release is trailing behind while the IP-focused entry is the one making money. So, we’re just seeing the usual blockbuster developments on a smaller scale than usual.

  • James Gunn Teases a ‘Legendary Star-Lord’ Solo Project

James Gunn Teases a ‘Legendary Star-Lord’ Solo Project

A post-credits scene attached to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 promised that while Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord had moved on from the Guardians and returned to Earth following his adventures with the Guardians, his time in the MCU was not up. Fans wondered and speculated about what might be next for the legendary outlaw and while most assumed that the character would show up in one or both of the Avengers films slated for the Multiverse Saga, there was also some chatter about a solo project for the character and as it turns out, that might just be in the works.

After a successful two-month run at the box office, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now available on digital platforms complete with all the extras and bonuses that accompany home releases including director commentary. During the post-credit scene that features Pratt’s Quill reuniting with his Terran grandfather, director James Gunn revealed that he and Pratt had talked about a potential Star-Lord solo film.

Oh, but not quite over. We always want to give somebody a little something special. And Chris and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to be able to do a ‘Legendary Star-Lord’ movie, a story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He’s a fish out of water in just kind of regular water. So I can’t wait to see it.

    James Gunn

Given Pratt’s star appeal and the fact that he’s one of the last headliners from the Infinity Saga not to be featured in his own solo project, it’s not surprising to hear that a Legendary Star-Lord film might be in the works. Though Pratt has made it clear that he thinks “it would be strange to continue Peter’s story without James,” the star also indicated he’d be willing to return to the roledown the road if something makes sense” saying he “would do it but it would really have to check a lot of the right boxes.” Just when such a project might fit into the MCU’s already packed and jammed-up slate and who would take the wheel now that Gunn has moved on to co-chair DC Studios are obvious questions. However, Gunn’s comments do seem to clarify that such a project is more likely to happen than not.

  • Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Teaser Trailer Passes 10M Views on YouTube

Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Teaser Trailer Passes 10M Views on YouTube

TUDUM was the big unveil for the first trailer for Netflix’s live-action One Piece series. A short teaser gave us a first look at what is to come and was our first real look at the cast in their costume, especially since they were teased with posters in January. Half a year later, we not only got to see the main cast in action but even a release date of August 31st.

After around two weeks, the show hit its first milestone as the teaser trailer passed 10 million views on YouTube, which was also shared by the official @Eiichiro_Staff Twitter account. Even on Twitter, the trailer has reached around 32.2M impressions and was retweeted up to 74.2K times.

Even the recent Anime Expo video of confirming that the live-action series will be dubbed by the original Japanese voice cast has already hit 3.2M views on Twitter. Though, it currently has managed to pull in 595K viewers within the last five days as of writing this article. Though, that is higher than other trailers or videos from the same event such as Zom 100, PLUTO, Pokémon Concierge, and Delicious in Dungeon.

It’s difficult to say what Netflix considers a healthy sign and viewership on YouTube doesn’t always equate to viewership on Netflix. So, we’ll still have to see if Netflix can keep up this strong promotional run for the series as we close in on its August release. While a mixed reception is expected for any live-action adaptation of a popular anime, this series has a big chance of potentially reaching a new audience that wouldn’t give the manga or anime a chance. So, here’s hoping the passion of everyone involved translates to the finished product.

  • BREAKING: Jennifer Garner to Return as Elektra in ‘Deadpool 3’

BREAKING: Jennifer Garner to Return as Elektra in ‘Deadpool 3’

It looks like the rumors are true, as Deadpool 3 will act as a callback to the era before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was getting started. In a new piece by The Hollywood Reporter, they have unveiled that not only will Ryan Reynold’s film see the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, but we’ll also get an iconic character from a previous Marvel film. Jennifer Garner is back as Elektra one more time.

For those that might not remember, Garner famously played the character in 2003’s Daredevil starring alongside Ben Affleck before getting her own spinoff in 2005. Her inclusion further supports the rumors that the story is going to feature a big multiverse storyline, as a way to build upon what we saw in Deadpool 2‘s post-credit sequence.

Of course, Garner’s return opens up the discussion as to if recent rumors of Affleck being on set might also indicate that he’s set to return as well. Who knows if Daredevil will actually be featured and how exactly this multiversal storyline will connect, but it’s definitely the perfect idea to make good use of Deadpool’s shenanigans as a final hurrah to that era before the MCU became the de facto franchise based around Marvel characters.

  • First Look at Ryan Reynolds in Costume on ‘Deadpool 3’ Set

First Look at Ryan Reynolds in Costume on ‘Deadpool 3’ Set

Deadpool 3 has been quite busy filming the return of the Merc with a Mouth. While his Marvel Cinematic Universe future remains open, a lot of hints have pointed to it potentially further exploring the Fox Universe one last time as Ryan Reynolds is joined by former X-Men and iconic Wolverine, Hugh Jackman. While there was a random statement that production may have already halted, it seems things are still moving along at a steady pace.

Surprisingly, while we still have to wonder if Wolverine finally gets his iconic yellow costume, Ryan Reynolds has been spotted on set in his Deadpool gear. Surprisingly, his costume seems pretty close to the original only the fabric might be made of some different material. Though, there’s also the chance that the color is simply popping a bit more on set than it would on the big screen.

    https://twitter.com/DiscussingFilm/status/1676956683044794369

Either way, it’s great seeing the iconic design back and knowing that Deadpool is on the horizon once again. There’s probably going to be a lot more 4th wall breaking, as the character realizes that he’s on a last hurra though his original universe. There’s a beautiful irony that the way Deadpool 2 ended, opened up for Marvel Studios to jump in and just go with it as a part of their multiverse shenanigans. We’ll see if they can keep the concept fresh after two other superhero properties explored it this year.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals When Doctor Strange Will Return

Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals When Doctor Strange Will Return

When last seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Stephen Strange hopped off to an undisclosed alternate universe with Charlize Theron‘s Clea with the promise that he’d return again. However, despite a third film in the franchise rumored to have been fast-tracked, there’s been no official announcement from Marvel Studios just yet, leaving fans wondering when they might see the Master of the Mystic Arts again. As it turns out, his next appearance may not be as far away as some might think.

In an interview with Nick Hackworth, Benedict Cumberbatch revealed that plans are in place for him to step back into the role of Strange. After describing his next role as Pete Seeger in James Mangold‘s upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, Cumberbatch teased his return to the MCU.

“After that [A Complete Unknown],the only thing I think I know for certain is there are some Marvel capers in the making next year,” revealed Cumberbatch. And while the actor went on to clarify that he knows very little about the plans–and given the current climate in Hollywood, it’s easy to believe him–a little Sherlockian deduction might lead to some possible explanations.

Following Disney’s major reshuffling of their future slate of films, only two Marvel Studios films, Blade and Fantastic Four, are currently intended to release in 2025. Of those projects, only Fantastic Four is known to be scheduled to film in 2024 with Blade believed to be nearly ready to enter production as soon as the ongoing WGA strike comes to an end. Given Strange’s travels to Earth-838 make him one of only three MCU characters to have met that Earth’s version of Reed Richards, it isn’t too hard to imagine Strange interacting with the main continuity’s Mister Fantastic. Of course, that doesn’t take all other options off the table. There’s an Untitled Marvel film slated for February 13, 2026 which could potentially be either Doctor Strange 3 or another film in which Strange appears and it’s certainly worth pointing out that while Cumberbatch will be filming next year, he never indicated he was working on a film. With that in mind, it’s possible he’s joining any number of Disney Plus projects that are either known to be or rumored to be in the works. Unfortunately, with Marvel sitting out SDCC ’23, we’ll likely have to wait quite some time to find out what’s next for Strange.

  • First Reactions of New ‘One Piece’ Footage from Anime Expo

First Reactions of New ‘One Piece’ Footage from Anime Expo

Anime Expo dropped quite a bit for One Piece, as not only did we get a little trailer for the latest volume of the manga, but even a new video for the live-action adaptation. Netflix’s Japanese dub will feature the original voices, as Inaki Godoy got to meet Mayumi Tanaka. As it turns out, some influencers also got a sneak peek of a few clips from the series, which gives us a better indication of what the series is going to look like.

@newworldartur, who also revealed they also contributed to the lore of the adaptation, shared a few insights into what the series was like. We got a glimpse of what’s to come in the teaser trailer but they go on to praise that what the show does well is it’s “goofy and fun-loving” just like the original series.

Some negative remarks were that there was some cheesy or “cringe” dialogue but still praises the script. So, perhaps only a few lines here or there are a bit more awkward than others especially not uncommon with shows finding their footing early on. There were some comments about the CG but does highlight it works for what the show is going for, but also has some time to finish work on.

They do highlight that they are faithful to the original, but they still tweaked some of the characteristics to make them a tad more “realistic.” One of the bigger changes seems to be that Nami seemingly joins Luffy and Zoro in Shells City, as hinted at in the teaser. They do highlight that the changes give it a better flow which matches the later storylines.

One highlight seems to be that they believe there are small instances that come from Eiichiro Oda, like Luffy being able to “hear something from the Merry“. Overall, seems they quite enjoyed what they saw and it gives us a little sense of what we can expect from the series next month.

They weren’t the only ones, as YouTubers Volume One also shared their reaction to a scene, which seems ripped straight from the manga, where Nami tricks members of Buggy’s crew. They highlight that her costume seemingly ripped from the early Nami concept art, but also highlighted that the show feels “piraty” and highlights the scale. Seems that seeing more of the character also greatly helps how the characters come to life, with even praises of the cinematography which was criticized in the trailer.
