RUMOR: Marvel Studios Finds Its Sue Storm in Award-Winning Actress Jodie Comer

As D23 Expo 2022 approaches, a monster rumor has emerged suggesting that Marvel Studios has found their Susan Storm. According to YouTuber John Campea, Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Award-winning actress Jodie Comer will be announced as Sue Storm this weekend.

So one of the little pieces of whispering I started to hear about two months ago. And I didn’t give alot to it. I didn’t give alot of credence to it in my own head. It was regarding Fantastic Four, and it was Free Guy’s Jodie Comer… That she’s going to be our Sue Storm. And she’s going to be announced as Sue Storm at D23.

    Jodie Comer

Comer has been ascending for the past several years with roles in Help and Killing Eve garnering nominations and awards. The actress recently starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy and Disney does love corporate synergy, so it’s sensible and possible that they have chosen to work with Comer again, this time on what must be one of Hollywood’s most coveted leading roles.

Now that Marvel Studios has found a director for Fantastic Four in Matt Shakman, all eyes are on the cast with D23 Expo presenting an excellent opportunity for Marvel Studios to make a big splash with a major announcement. If Comer is the pick for Storm, her age (29) might provide fans with a range not only for her husband, Reed Richards, but also her younger brother, Johnny Storm. Sue has often been portrayed as about a decade younger than Reed and eight years older than Johnny. Given Comer could pull off a Sue anywhere in her twenties, it would be possible for Johnny to be close in age to Peter Parker, who recently got his high school GED after dropping out of his senior year. Fans of the comics will know the two have been friends throughout the years, making the age of Johnny in the MCU something of interest.

Fantastic Four is set to hit theaters on November 8, 2024.

  • Michael Waldron Reveals Alternate Reed Richards Scene Existed in Previous Draft of ‘Multiverse of Madness’

Michael Waldron Reveals Alternate Reed Richards Scene Existed in Previous Draft of ‘Multiverse of Madness’

After years of pining for John Krasinski to be cast as Mr. Fantastic, fans got their wish when the actor showed up as Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Shortly after, as a bit of a middle finger to fans, Richards was taunted and brutally murdered by the Scarlet Witch, who then went on to kill the rest of his Illuminati teammates.

While writer Michael Waldron has always maintained that the Illuminati was always in his draft of the film, he’s also been clear that the final lineup that appeared on film wasn’t representative of the one that he first pitched. Now, in a new interview with Empire, Waldron explains that whether or not Richards was always a part of that lineup, he was ALWAYS going to be part of the film, even if in a post-credit tag:

I always wanted Reed Richards in this thing. In my very first draft, I wrote a tag just for the hell of it, of the events of the movie being recorded and reviewed by somebody in the Baxter Building, and a stretchy hand coming into frame to run it back. Reed is probably my favorite Marvel Comics character, so I was always gunning to get him in here somewhere.

    Michael Waldron

Waldron’s love for Richards is no secret. In an exclusive interview with Murphy’s Multiverse earlier this year, the writer detailed his passion for the character and how Jonathan Hickman’s work with the character in the comics inspired his take on Richards and the Illuminati. Fans of the character have a bit of a wait ahead of them before seeing him again, as Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four isn’t scheduled to hit theaters for another 2 years; however, there is hope that the actor who will portray the character next might be introduced at D23.

The Morning After Huddle: August 27, 2022

Welcome to your Saturday morning edition of The Morning After Huddle! A former second-round pick is finding his strides again.

Here’s what you need to know:

    • First, Eugene ”Geno” Cyril Smith III is your starting Quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. After Friday night’s preseason game loss to the Cowboys, Coach Pete Carroll made the announcement. Geno is living out his quest again to be a starting quarterback, nine years after joining the New York Jets to battle Mark Sanchez for the starting position and four teams later. Not bad, Eugene.
    • Next, in case you missed it, Bills Punter Matt Araiza is facing allegations of sexual assault stemming from an October 2021 incident. The Bills released a statement saying that they had no comment due to the ongoing investigation, but that they investigated Araiza upon learning of the allegations. A new report out of Buffalo says otherwise. And there’s this nugget: Coach Sean McDermott said on Friday that the Bills had “a lot of work to do”, essentially referring to gathering an understanding of the Matt Araiza situation.

We’re back on Monday with more insights and analysis on all things you want to know about the NFL.

  • ‘Ahsoka’ Star Watched ‘Star Wars Rebels’ to Prepare for Sabine Wren

‘Ahsoka’ Star Watched ‘Star Wars Rebels’ to Prepare for Sabine Wren

Natasha Liu Bordizzo is set to take on the role of Sabine Wren in live-action. The upcoming Disney+ series Ahsoka will see her take on the role of a character first introduced in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. The Mandalorian had a big role in the animated spinoff series and while her exact role still remains uncertain in the upcoming series, it does seem like she’s prepared for the role by watching Rebels as revealed in a new piece with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting the Netflix film Day Shift.

It’s almost like a memory book; that’s what I feel Rebels is for me. It’s just this kind of free prep I never had to do as an actor because it’s all been done for me.

    Natasha Liu Bordizzu

Tiya Sircar, well-known for her time on The Good Place, voiced the character in REbels and it’ll be interesting to see if she also carries over some of her performance to bring the character into live-action. As a fellow Mandalorian, it’ll be interesting if she might have an early appearance in the upcoming third season of the Disney+ series that started it all.

She seems like the perfect fit as a surprise guess that’ll also lead to her larger role in the Ahsoka spinoff. Perhaps the season might even connect to the series and set up the tale of Ahsoka’s journey of finding Ezra Bridger, as one of the catalysts could be Admiral Thrawn.

  • ‘House of the Dragon’ Season One Primer

How we got to the Dance of Dragons

Get ready for a wild ride. Obvious spoilers for both Game of Thrones and mild spoilers for House of the Dragon could pop up, but the idea is to help fans figure out where the series will be starting off and how it connects to GoT, beginning with the main cast.

    King Viserys Targeryen I

Viserys I is the head and King of the Targaryen dynasty at this present stage, which is 130 AC (Aegon’s Conquest), so this is both 130 years after Aegon began his conquest of Westeros, and 169 years before the events of Game of Thrones, so unfortunately if you were looking for a cameo from any of the old cast, that is extremely unlikely.

King Viserys I, being played by Paddy Considine. He’s a lazy, incompetent king who would love nothing more than to waste days away drinking and partying than ruling, which is why he delegates a lot of his work to the small council. He hates his children and family fighting, so they all put on a façade around him to make it seem like things are going smoothly.

    Rhaenyra Targeryen, The Realm’s Delight

Rhaenyra, who will be the series lead, is being played by Emma D’Arcy, as well as young Rhaenyra being played by Milly Alcock. We’re getting flashbacks, people! Wouldn’t have minded a couple more of those in the last show! Rhaenyra is the first and oldest child of King Viserys, and has been named his heir since she was a small child. This went directly against how Viserys himself was crowned, but during the moment of naming Rhaenyra, there were no male claimants to oppose her, and the common folk loved her, so it went without issue. This lasted only a short time, however.

    Daemon Targaryen, The Rogue Prince

Daemon is the younger brother to Viserys, and is everything that Viserys is not. He is a master swordsman who grew the King’s Landing City Watch into what it is today. He’s waged many wars in the eastern islands known as the Step Stones, wields the ancient Targaryen sword Dark Sister and is the all-around perfect anti-hero for this story. He’s been pissed off at Viserys about Rhaenyra jumping him in the line of succession since it happened, but keep watching the series to see how this unfolds.

    Alicent Hightower

Rhaenyra was Viserys’ first and only child by his first marriage; however, Viserys did remarry a young woman named Alicent Hightower (who you haven’t been introduced to yet if you haven’t read the books, they rule Oldtown, where Sam went to study for 10 minutes and there was a giant lighthouse). Curiously enough, her father is the King’s Hand, Otto Hightower. This marriage resulted in 3 children, sons Aegon, Aemond, and a daughter, Helaena. Per IMDb, the children aren’t in many episodes, so we’ll omit summaries on them. Just keep in mind that Rhaenyra is what is standing in the way of Alicent’s children from the Iron Throne.

    Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake

Corlys Velaryon is the Lord of the Tides, the name for the patriarch of the Velaryon dynasty, a Valyrian (very creative in naming these guys George) house that has been in Westeros longer than the Targaryens. While the Targaryens rule the sky, the Velaryons rule the seas. These two families have been allies ever since the Targaryens first came to Dragonstone, and it is staying that way in this part of the story.

Corlys married Viserys’ sister, Rhaenys, and had a son and daughter, Laena and Laenor. Rhaenyra married Laenor and produced 3 sons, so the Velaryons will finally have their blood sitting on the Iron Throne. Or so Corlys and company thought. Laena also married Daemon, Viserys’ brother and had children as well.

This brings us up to speed on the main players for House of the Dragon. Now let’s examine the different sides for the Dance of the Dragons, and where the series will likely begin.

SPOILERS BELOW – SUCCESSION AS WELL AS THE GREENS AND THE BLACKS

    A Question of Succession

If you remember the ending for Game of Thrones, you will remember that with Jon Snow being a Targaryen, the question of Daenerys’s claim to the throne came into play, with Jon being the last remaining son of the Heir to the Iron Throne, Rhaegar Targaryen, making his claim stronger than Dany’s. Dany is the younger sister to Rhaegar, and in Westerosi culture, the male will always be the better claimant to the throne or the House than a female. Does that make it right? Certainly not, but it seems that George RR Martin took a leaf out of another George’s pamphlet, this George being Lucas. The more you compare the Dance of the Dragons to A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones, the more similarities you find. “It’s like poetry. It rhymes.”

As established, Dany and Jon are both claimants to the Iron Throne (In the books Aegon, Rhaegar’s firstborn, has “resurfaced” but we’ll ignore that) which causes a biiiiiit of a conflict. Now let’s paint the picture with the Dance of Dragons.

King Viserys I, who himself was chosen to sit on the Iron Throne over a number of other claimants in a great council, in large part due to being male, had one daughter by his first marriage, Rhaenyra. Viserys did, however, remarry, a young woman named Alicent Hightower. This marriage resulted in 3 children, sons Aegon, Aemond, and a daughter Helaena. Confused yet? Just wait.

Rhaenyra at a young age was named the Heir to the Iron Throne by her father and was received with cheers. Rhaenyra was nicknamed The Realm’s Delight and all the peasants loved her. One person, who did not love this, was Viserys’s brother, Prince Daemon, The Rogue Prince, played by Matt Smith. He was extraordinarily pissed off and actually left King’s Landing for a time. This question of inheritance came up a lot, especially with Viserys having other sons by way of Alicent.

Rhaenyra’s children also raise some questions. She is married to Laenor Velaryon, with whom she has 3 sons. In the show, the Velaryons are Black, which in my opinion is a great way to show that the Rhaenyra’s children aren’t actually Laenor’s, but they are bastard boys who were fathered by Harwin Strong. In the book Fire and Blood, this is shown by the boys all having brown hair and facial features similar to Strong’s, which is in direct dispute to both Rhaenyra and Laenor having typical Valyrian blonde/silver hair. In the show it will be a lot more distinctive, being that the boys will have an completely different skin tone than Laenor.

This question of legitimacy for the heirs of the Iron Throne will be great ammo for Alicent and her oldest son, Aegon’s claim to the throne. Alicent’s view is that the male always comes before the female, and true-born sons should be the ones to inherit the kingship. So, it will eventually come down to Rhaenyra vs Aegon.

Alicent and Aegon’s faction were called the Greens, due to Alicent wearing a green dress at a great tournament celebrating her and Viserys’s 5th wedding anniversary. Rhaenyra wore the traditional Targaryen colors, black and red, coining her faction the Blacks. Let’s sort out the factions.

    The Blacks

Queen Rhaenyra and her sons, Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey Valeryon

    Prince Daemon Targaryen

Corlys Valeryon and his wife, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen

    The Greens

Alicent Hightower and her father, Otto Hightower

Aegon Targaryen, the claimant, and his brother, Aemond

Criston Cole, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard

What to expect in Season 1 of House of the Dragon

So we’ve got the background, the sides, and some other key pieces of information. Now what should we expect in season 1, especially with a finished story already set?

With Viserys appearing in all 10 episodes of Season 1, I wouldn’t expect Dragon fights just yet. Seaon 1 seems primed to sow a lot of seeds of resentment between the Greens and the Blacks, with Viserys trying to make both sides happy. There will be “Strong” hints towards Rhaenyra’s children’s legitimacy, and Daemon will be causing all sorts of ruckus either with the City Watch or with his brother. Rhaenyra and Daemon eventually do marry during the Dance, but I don’t think they’re together yet at the start of the show. Keep an eye out for them starting to fall for each other.

With flashbacks set to play a role, expect to see the scene of Rhaenyra first being declared heir. The Great Council choosing Viserys as the king is incredibly likely, with his grandfather, King Jaehaerys being rumored to appear for one episode. This show should be taking its time unfurling all of these plots, especially with the backlash of rushing the last 2 seasons of Game of Thrones.

All in all, it is VERY exciting to get back into Westeros with a finished product to go off of. Happy Dancing!

The Morning After Huddle: August 15, 2022

After a few days off, we’re back like we never left. Welcome to the Morning After Huddle! We’re not the only ones back: so is football (preseason that is).

Here’s what you need to know:

    • To start, the entire state of New York is breathing a collective sigh of relief. During Saturday’s slate of preseason games, starting Jets QB Zach Wilson injured himself in what appears a non-contact play. Doctors are diagnosing Wilson with a bone bruise and a meniscus tear that requires surgery this week. The expected timeline for recovery is anywhere from 2-6 weeks, but doctors will know more once they perform surgery. It remains to be seen who will step in for Wilson.
    • Next, there are lots of storylines out of this weekend’s games, but one that adds to the chaos is Browns QB Deshaun Watson apologizing to the women impacted by his actions. For the first time, Watson acknowledges his role in his sexual misconduct allegation and offers these words: “I want to say that I’m truly sorry to all of the women that I have impacted in this situation.” After the game, Watson did not add anything to his words. The timing of this is peculiar given that the suspension for Watson is still pending.
    • Finally, your Key Signings Roundup is chalked full of action. Rosters got down to 85 players yesterday.

Catch up with us tomorrow! The Morning After is back with more news you definitely want to know.

  • Morning After Huddle: First Day of NFL Training Camp

Morning After Huddle: First Day of NFL Training Camp

You smell that, friends? That is the smell of the NFL Preseason just a week away. What essentially symbolizes the beginning of the NFL season, the new-look Jaguars and new-look Raiders will kick this thing off a week from today. Once that happens, there won’t be a week without football until after the Pro Bowl. So, stick with the Multiversers as we get you ready with this morning’s Morning After Huddle. We begin in the city of Brotherly Love, where all eyes are on QB Jalen Hurts and his second year in Head Coach Nick Sirriani’s offense.

    • According to Ian Rapaport, the QB with the shiny new number one WR has looked very comfortable. Building off a strong spring, Hurts had a strong day at training camp as he continues to build rapport with newly-acquired WR AJ Brown, first-round pick from a year ago Devonta Smith, and a motivated Jalen Reagor. Mix in Dallas Goedert and RB Miles Sanders, and a stout offensive line, and this Eagles team has the chance to be very explosive on offense. If the defense holds up, the Eagles are a team to watch in the NFC East.
    • Speaking of defenses, the San Francisco 49ers made a move by releasing EDGE Dee Ford. Injuries over the last two seasons have really prevented the pass rusher from replicating his production in Kansas City, and it will be interesting to see if a team takes a flyer on him as they enter training camp. One team to look out for? The New York Jets, whose head coach Robert Saleh was Ford’s defensive coordinator in San Francisco. And everyone knows Saleh loves him some defensive linemen.
    • Continuing with the Jets, they officially announced that Mehki Becton will play RT this upcoming season. After the birth of his first son, the Big Ticket has been at the Jets facility for the last month getting in shape: this was made difficult after a freak injury last season cut his season short, but he appears to be in great spirits. Becton said that he doesn’t care where he plays so long as he’s out there with the starting five, and he seems committed to shutting up the naysayers who forgot just how dominant he was his rookie year. Defensive linemen, be warned.
    • Sticking with defensive linemen, the Patriots resigned one of their better ones in DT Davon Godchaux. The interior defensive lineman received a two-year extension with $17.85 million guaranteed. For his career, Godchaux only has four sacks, but is a stout run defender and is able to occupy blockers to free EDGE Matthew Judon, who feasts on one on ones. This also created some cap space for the Patriots, who are in dire need of WR help: could this be where Odell Beckham, Jr. lands? Something to watch.
    • Concluding with the pass catchers, we bring you a quick update on Deebo Samuel, Michael Thomas, and Julio Jones. Julio has joined the Tampa Bay Bucs on the same day that Chris Godwin came off the PUP list and, with the addition of Russell Gage this off-season, the Bucs now have some serious depth behind the aforementioned Godwin and WR Mike Evans. It was depth they had before Antonio Brown went off the rails, again. Deebo Samuel had a great conversation with Kyle Shanahan, according only to Kyle Shanahan, and is “holding in” for a new contract that would reward him for being one of the better WRs last year. He, also, has no interest in playing RB, which makes sense especially when you consider that any time Deebo isn’t spending at WR isn’t helping Trey Lance become a better QB. And Michael Thomas, who used to be in the discussion as one of the better WRs, is healthy and will join newly-drafted Chris Olave and newly-signed Jarvis Landry to create one of the better trios in the NFL for Saints QB Jameis Winston.

SDCC: Marvel Studios Reveals Its Next Two Avengers Films

As part of Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at SDCC ’22, One-Above-All Kevin Feige revealed the titles of the studio’s next two Avengers films. As part of Marvel Studios Phase 6 slate, fans will be treated to Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Following the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios began easing into what is now known as the Multiverse Saga. Throughout the last two years, projects such as Loki, What If…?, SpiderMan: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness have introduced the concept of the multiverse to MCU fans and, after months of uncertainty about where the overarching story is headed, Feige has made it very clear. Integral to the two titles is Jonathan Majors‘ Kang, who was first introduced as a Variant referred to as He Who Remains in the finale of Loki. Set to appear next in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Majors, in the guise of multiple Variants, will serve as the MCU’s next big bad, ala Thanos.

SDCC: Daredevil to Appear in ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’

Spider-Man: Freshman Year became a hotly anticipated series over a matter of minutes at SDCC ’22 as a string of major revelations about the animated series made big news. Among them is that Daredevil, voiced by Charlie Cox, will be appearing in the Disney Plus series.

The panel also revealed that Daredevil will appear in a black suit, but one very different from his Netflix get up.

  • Murphy’s Team-Up Volume 24: Teaming-Up with Ms. Marvel

    Murphy’s Team-Up Volume 24: Teaming-Up with Ms. Marvel

Anthony Canton III on Layla El-Faouly

I can imagine a world where Ms. Marvel has a longer Season 2 in episodes and a more expansive story. There feels like more to explore in Karachi. As Kamala continues to learn more about her family legacy she could run into another hero while she’s there. Enter the Scarlet Scarab.

One of the more curious decisions in the Moon Knight finale was not seeing where Layla El-Faouly is going next. We get the line when the young girl is asking Layla if she’s an Egyptian superhero and she says yes. How about Kamala and Layla run a quick mission spanning two episodes?

Layla could be in town searching for something or someone and happen to run into Kamala. Culturally it would be an excellent moment to continue telling these stories of representation. You can also simultaneously continue Ms. Marvel’s story and have a streamline into what could be next for Layla and Moon Knight. I also imagine the two would have fun conversations about growing up and what type of hero they want to be.

    Dalbin Osorio on Ironheart

Dominique Thorne and Iman Vellani are both magic, and I cannot wait to see Ironheart and Ms. Marvel interact.  Seeing these two legacy heroes, with potential connections to Kang. trying to navigate the world they’ve grown up in with these heroes they’ve looked up to (assuming Ironheart respects Tony and doesn’t despise him) will be something special. Being the heroes that follow the past and future of the MCU is weighty enough, but when we factor in that they will arguably be the most powerful heroes in their generation, the possibilities are endless. What’s even cooler is that these are two girls of color that will give more girls of color more heroes to look up to, and the MCU deserves more representation.

    Mary Maerz on Captain America

I would love to see Kamala Khan and Sam Wilson meet and work together. Kamala would without a doubt have some sweet and humorous fangirl reactions to meeting Captain America. In the comics, Kamala often had a very wholesome relationship with Tony Stark/Iron Man while she was an Avenger. We no longer have Tony or Iron Man, but Sam Wilson as Cap seems like he could take on that mentor role phenomenally. A lot of Kamala’s struggles with who she looked up to involved comic events like Civil War II, which so far do not look like they will play much if any role in the near future. So, with no current sides being drawn between the above-the-line Avengers, there is no reason Sam could not, to some extent, take Kamala under his literal wing. Sam is a phenomenal character whose future I am also very excited for, and I think their relationship could easily bring out some of the best and most inspiring aspects of each of them.

    MTF III on America Chavez

No matter what you think of MCU Phase 4 as a whole, there’s no denying that Iman Vellani and Xochitl Gomez have been delightful, both in and out of character. But while Ms. Marvel was able to firmly ensconce Kamala in a Jersey City that feels vibrant and culturally rich, where we last left America Chavez at the end of Multiverse of Madness wasn’t nearly as character-enriching. And while it’s certainly possible that our star-punching firecracker can establish found family among grown adult sorcerers in Kamer Taj, placing America alongside characters her age in a diverse city filled with people she can potentially converse with in Spanish will be far more beneficial for her in the long run. And the commonalities and contrasts between South Asian and Latinx cultures can lend more depth and meaning to their interactions, both for the characters themselves, and for the viewers.

On the superpower side, we were able to see Kamala level up considerably across a handful of episodes of her show. Those of us who are fans of America in the comics know what she is capable of, so seeing her level up alongside a fellow potential Young Avenger while they trade quips would only serve to endear us to America more as she actualizes, and to Kamala more as she gets to nerd out with tandem attacks and training in the way that only a hardcore comics/superhero fan can. Just imagine the wacky fun she could cook up, which America would be more than inclined to try. And imagine the universes they could jump into and trouble they could find, all between 3:00 and curfew. Sign me up for #AmeriKhan — there’s a portmanteau, so you know it works.

    Torbjorn Frazier on Loki

Kamala Khan and Loki Laufeyson are the odd couple partnership the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) deserves. Maybe besides Steve Rogers, there isn’t a character in the MCU that personifies pure good morality as a superhero more than Ms. Marvel. And pairing her with the literal God of Mischief would provide each other the perfect foil for one another and could become an instant fan-favorite partnership. The themes of family are critical to both characters in extremely different ways, and gaining understanding about each other’s experience would provide interesting perspective and growth for both Kamala and Loki. In addition, Bisha K. Ali has experience writing for both of these characters on their respective Disney+ shows which could help ensure a strong tonal fit for a hypothetical team-up. While it would take a relatively major shuffling of the deck in the MCU to allow Ms. Marvel and Loki to team-up, it’d certainly be a worthwhile viewing experience (and potentially set the stage for a Kid Loki to fit into a Young Avengers line-up down the road).

    Charles Murphy on Shang-Chi

Kamala Khan and Shang-Chi don’t have an awful lot in common. One was trained to be an assassin and grew up in a household shattered by the murder of his mother. The other grew up in a household full of love while fangirling over Carol Danvers and other superheroes. But both of them now possess ancient alien artifacts of enormous power that have pushed them into a world they weren’t quite ready for. Ms. Marvel seemed to set the table a little for this team-up when the Ten Rings logo was seen on the cave floor where the bangle was found, but right now it’s not entirely clear where that will go. Whatever the case, seeing these get these two heroes together on screen seems to be nothing more than a matter of time.
