One of the biggest world-building questions hovering over James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe is how the franchise will handle the sheer density of Earth’s Green Lanterns. Speaking during post-panel press sessions at San Diego Comic-Con, the creative minds behind HBO’s upcoming drama Lanterns—including showrunner Chris Mundy (Ozark) and executive producers Tom King and Damon Lindelof—teased how the live-action series will logically address the unique “three-ring setup” currently operating inside Space Sector 2814.
Rather than ignoring comic book geography, Lanterns will lean directly into the bureaucratic and logistical headache of assigning three distinct human Green Lanterns—veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), and mop-topped Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion)—to guard the exact same cosmic sector.
In the lore of the Green Lantern Corps, Space Sector 2814 is a massive quadrant of space that encompasses Earth alongside hundreds of other alien worlds. Historically, the Guardians of the Universe assign only one or two Lanterns to a single sector.
According to Mundy and King, the series frames Sector 2814 as a overworked “troubled precinct” within the broader cosmic police force:
- Jordan is portrayed as the grizzled, weary senior lawman who has spent decades covering the vast, outer-space perimeter of Sector 2814.
- Stewart is brought in as his newly minted, boots-on-the-ground partner specifically because Earth has become a hotspot for dark, anomalous cosmic activity requiring dual oversight.

- Gardner—first introduced in James Gunn’s Superman—functions outside the traditional Hal/John precinct structure. Guy serves as an Earth-stationed, public-facing Lantern tied to broader geopolitical and superhero affairs, leaving Hal and John to handle the localized, gritty detective work in rural America.
Producer Damon Lindelof emphasized that while Guy Gardner represents the broader, colorful, four-quadrant DCU at large, Lanterns grounds its narrative specifically in the tense procedural chemistry between Hal and John.
The creative team teased that an ancient, dark mystery buried in the American heartland directly forces the Guardians to break protocol and deploy multiple rings to keep Sector 2814 from destabilizing. The “three-ring setup” drives character conflict: Hal views the Guardians’ decision to assign multiple rings to a single planet as a sign that Earth is being targeted for total collapse, while John feels constant pressure to prove that his ring isn’t just a redundant “substitute” for a legendary predecessor.
By treating Sector 2814 like an overworked, high-crime police precinct and establishing clear, distinct roles for Hal, John, and Guy, the creative team behind Lanterns is giving the DCU a grounded, logical infrastructure.
