Kevin Feige Shuts Down Rumors, Confirms Marvel Studios 2027 and 2028 Theatrical Slates

In most cases, theories and rumors drive the Marvel Studios news cycle more than actual news. Indeed, the discourse around things that may or may not be true often drowns out the things that are. Ahead of and coming out of SDCC, one such topic of discussion was that the studio was planning to release a “secret” film between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Nevermind the complete absence of evidence of such a thing; fans had become convinced that Doctor Strange 3 or Avengers: Secret Wars-Part I would hit theaters in July 2027.

In an interview with Empire, Feige put to rest any lingering belief that the studio had plans to release another film between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, confirming that the studio will only have one theatrical release in 2027.

“A lot of it is a strategy we’ve talked about for a while, of focusing on quality,” said Feige. “We always try to focus on quality, but when quantity is so much, you get spread thin. We didn’t want to be spread thin, and the Avengers is as important as it comes. And Secret Wars, in particular for Empire readers, who know the comics, is a setup in and of itself to the future, to what’s next.”

In addition to nuking fan theories about a secret film in 2027, Feige also reiterated that the studio still has more to reveal about its 2028 film slate. With Ghost Rider and Black Panther III stealing the show at SDCC, fans began to assume that the studio was only releasing those films in 2028 and that X-Men had somehow be delayed.

So really, it was landing those two movies (Doomsday and Endgame) and setting up 2028, of which we’ve revealed two of them so far, Ghost Rider and Panther III.”

With D23 coming up in just a few weeks, it sounds as though there’s an increasingly good chance that the date, title and cast of the studio’s X-Men film will be revealed in Anaheim.
