  • ‘Ghost of Tsushima’ Breaks July Digital Sales Record

‘Ghost of Tsushima’ Breaks July Digital Sales Record

Never did I think composing a haiku would be my favorite thing to do in a game. I guess that is just part of the charm when I got to play Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch created an open-world game set during Edo Japan. On the island of Tsushima, samurai Jin Sakai faces down the Mongrol army. This war takes a toll on Jin as he starts being changed by the tide of war. Looks like that concept was quite enticing. The game has officially become PlayStation’s fastest-selling exclusive IP on the PS Store. It has managed to sell 1.9M digital units in July alone.

To put this in comparison, Horizon Zero Dawn held the title until now. It had the same amount of virtual sales within two months. Sony exclusive Days Gone also needed two months to pass 1.3 million in digital sales. As of now, Ghost of Tsushima is also the biggest digital release for July. The Last of Us Part II also broke that record for June.

Summer is normally a quiet season for game sales but the current pandemic has changed that. Nintendo is also seeing quite the success this year with Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 5M and Pokémon Sword and Shield at 2.7M. Their latest release Paper Mario: The Origami King did beat out last year’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses with 555K digital sales. It has been a major year for the gaming industry and we’ll see if more records will be broken as the year goes on.

  • ‘The Batman’ Trilogy to Court Owls

‘The Batman’ Trilogy to Court Owls

Connecting Imaginary Dots are pieces we write here that allow us to be what we all truly are: fans. These should not be taken as scoops, exclusives or facts; just speculation about the things for which we all share a great passion.

The Batman already looks amazing. Not going to lie, I have probably watched that trailer way too many times by now. We’ve had so many different incarnations of Batman in film. Michael Keaton explored the character in a Gothic world. Christian Bale brought him into the modern era and politics. Ben Affleck showed us that a man can stand among giants. Now, it is Robert Pattinson‘s turn to show us another side of the Bat we had yet to explore. How about we dive in and see what little clues this trailer is hiding from us. Let’s highlight what this trailer may be telling us about this new world and the story it might tell.

    riddler-jpg

Oh, what an opening this is. The sound of duct-tape being ripped is familiar but not when it means to silence a person. Well, killing him is actually a better choice of words here. His victim seems to be the Mayor of Gotham going by the newspaper clippings. Yes, we start this story with our look at the main antagonist, Paul Dano‘s Riddler. He is quite a departure from the character we know but the iconic green is still present. He deliberately is sending messages to Batman. A green envelope attached to the silenced politician starts off the investigation. At one point, he lets a man strapped with a bomb drive into a funeral. Pattinson‘s Bruce Wayne is present so it creates the illusion he might know is behind the cape and cowl. This is mainly because of the following quote from the trailer:

“You are a part of this too.”

This question seems to be directed at Bruce Wayne in the trailer. There is a chance this is just a red herring, as the timing of the quote shows us Bruce unmasking. Kuddos that this is the first version where he doesn’t magically lose his eye paint. Something about this quote is interesting, as it alludes to some bigger picture. We know that director Matt Reeves has planned an entire trilogy. As such, he can already set some important story elements early on. We know that A Long Halloween arc will also be an inspiration. There are small glimpses of John Turturro’s Carmine Falcone in the newspapers. Reeves even discusses in the DC FanDome panel that they will uncover a much deeper level of corruption. His second quote around the halfway point does hint at this more.

“If you are justice, please do not lie. What is the price for your blind eye?”

Reeves is already working on a mini-series that will explore Gotham P.D. during Year One of Batman. He once again pointed out that the corruption of the police force will play a major role in that show’s story. We even get a glimpse at it in this trailer, as we see Batman escaping from a group of cops with his grappling hook. As he dives deeper into the mystery, he might stumble upon something he wasn’t meant to find. At the beginning of the trailer, we see the police work alongside him so something must’ve happened to make them turn. The short snippet of Batman surrounded by cops may have kickstarted the manhunt.

There is one aspect of the story that is subtle but might hint at why this all connects back to Bruce Wayne. A major emphasis was put on this versions’ bat symbol. It looks to be made from the gun that killed Thomas and Martha Wayne. He carries the guilt around with him wherever he goes. It seems like just a nice little touch but it could become an important emotional element for his character. If the corruption was spread throughout the city, his family would’ve been involved as well in some way. Any sane person would start to question if his family had kept secrets from him before their death. What kind of secret could that be? Well, maybe Riddler’s greeting card already teased it.

    owl

I do not think the Court of Owls will be introduced in this first installment though. They might be hinted at throughout but the focus will be on Riddler unraveling Gotham’s system. The actions of this story will unravel Batman’s journey deeper down into Gotham’s history. Reeves is exploring the detective aspect of the character. Slowly uncovering the influences of a shady organization that has existed since the 1600s seems like a perfect fit. The only missing riddle is what connection does Edward Nashton have to the bigger picture.

So, how do Catwoman and Cobblepot play into the story? Let’s start off with the more obvious connection, Zoe Kravits’ Selina Kyle. Most likely, she ends up getting entangled after stealing an important item from the victim’s apartment. We see the warning tape as she is trying to break into a safe. Her involvement isn’t necessarily deliberate. She just ends up getting dragged into the bigger picture. As Batman still operates alone, she might become an unlikely ally throughout the film. This is just the start of their relationship that will develop throughout the trilogies’ overarching story.

    catwoman

Alright, let’s talk about the Penguin. First off, I still cannot believe that was Colin Farrell. What an amazing makeup job they did. Either way, we are here to discuss his role in the bigger picture. Once again, Reeves confirmed that a lot of the villains in this film aren’t fully formed. Oswald is still working his way up the ladder before cementing his role as a mob boss. This actually might be the reason he is in this film. As he rises through the ranks in this film, we get introduced to how deep the corruption is in the city. Cobblepot simply becomes an unknowing pawn throughout the trilogy. Maybe we get a Batman Returns tribute as he runs for mayor at one point. Have to replace the one lost at the beginning of this one. Well see how deep the rabbit hole goes once The Batman releases October 1st, 2021.

  • Post-Launch Reveal Teased for Upcoming ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ War Table

Post-Launch Reveal Teased for Upcoming ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ War Table

Here’s a nice surprise. Marvel’s Avengers Beta has officially come to an end. All that is left is for the game is the official launch on September 4th. We were teased that a new War Table might be heading our way shortly before release. Sadly, we didn’t have any news when it would release. Also, what exactly we could expect from it. My personal hopes were to see some kind of tease of what post-launch content they have planned. Looks like my pleas have been heard, as a newsletter sent out via email confirmed that we will get the next War Table on September 1st with some major reveals.

    https://twitter.com/PlayAvenger/status/1298245643652259840

The newsletter confirms some Day One reveals for the launch. Quite curious about what the progression system is that they reference here. Either way, what sticks out is the confirmation of our first look at the post-launch “season” titled Avengers Initiative. This was already teased during the Hawkeye reveal last month. We know that each character has their own story missions. I believe that they purposely call it a post-launch content season as it will be something unique from those character-specific missions. They also will unveil an additional post-launch playable hero. My best guess is that this character will be one of the clone characters like War Machine or She-Hulk that were leaked a few weeks back.

  • ‘THE BATMAN’ Still Filming in Chicago

‘THE BATMAN’ Still Filming in Chicago

According to a new report from Screen Magazine, Matt ReevesThe Batman is still expected to film in Chicago this Fall, planning for a late October shoot.

Screen Magazine reports, filming in “The Windy City” is expected to take one to two weeks, with at least one month of pre-production. They are expected to do mainly shots of exterior downtown and that would possibly include Chicago landmarks, (suggested were the Thompson center and Board of Trade). It is currently unclear if stars Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, or Colin Farrell would be there for filming.

Twitter account @filming_chicago retweeted the article from Screen commenting that they hadn’t heard anything at this time, but felt confident in Screen’s information.

Meanwhile in Chicago, FX series Fargo has resumed production on it’s fourth season, with other Chicago based NBC shows (Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, and Chicago Med)expected to start up again in September. CW series The Batwoman had also done some filming in Chicago, and is expected to return at some point. Here’s hoping all go on without a hitch.

  • ‘CARNIVAL ROW’ Wraps; ‘THE FALCON AND WINTER SOLDIER’ May Be Next

‘CARNIVAL ROW’ Wraps; ‘THE FALCON AND WINTER SOLDIER’ May Be Next

Deadline has reported that Amazon Prime series Carnival Row (starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne) has finally finished filming it’s second season in the Czech Republic. The shoot began last November and was paused in March due to a COVID-19 shutdowns in the country (and pretty much everywhere).

Variety and Deadline both reported that Carnival Row only had 2 weeks of shooting left in the second season when they stopped in March, and it appears they resumed filming in late July/early August per a post from a Prague based extras agency. We have heard that the extra protocols due to COVID-19 would make the shoots a bit longer, approximately half a week added for every week expected, so this sounds about right to me.

This is excellent news for Carnival Row fans certainly, and potentially good news for Marvel fans as well that the series seems to have completed relatively quickly and without having to shut down again due to the virus. Many of you will recall the shut down occurred while Falcon and The Winter Soldier was trying to film some key scenes in the Czech Republic when it had to shut down production and leave the country. While we’ve heard rumors about different plans being made to try to get at least part of the production back to Prague to finish up, we have also heard that it is not absolutely necessary for them to return due to it being possible to film certain scenes elsewhere. Only time will tell in this very uncertain time. It would be a pity to miss out on those beautiful Prague sets they had planned tho!

  • ‘Mad Max: Furiosa’ Eyeing Chris Hemsworth as Male Lead

‘Mad Max: Furiosa’ Eyeing Chris Hemsworth as Male Lead

Mad Max: Fury Road came out five years ago. George Miller returned to the franchise he started back in 1979. After spending a few decades with children-friendly films like Babe or Happy Feet. His return gave us an amazing R-rated look at the sandy apocalypse and introduced us to an iconic badass, Furiosa. Miller then started becoming vocal about wanting to explore her backstory. That was a surprise, as we thought they would continue the story after Max left Charlize Theron‘s Furiosa at the end of Fury Road. Still, a sequel sounds interesting as it also gives us a chance to find out more about her first meeting with Immortan Joe.

Casting is already underway for the film, as Illuminerdi got their hands on the following character description:

    [DEMENTUS]
    Lead Male (30 – 40)
He is breathtakingly handsome. An angel’s face, scarred by a
deep forehead wound stitched together with shiny chrome
    staples.

Warner Bros. is currently interested in hiring Chris Hemsworth in the lead role. The description is quite interesting. The mentioning of a deep scar across the forehead is rather interesting. There probably is some kind of backstory they will explore where he got that wound. It will be interesting to see if this character even survives, as there isn’t anyone that would fit his description in Fury Road. No matter what direction they go, I cannot wait to see what they’ll do with this story. Hopefully, they will bring back the amazing visuals that made the last film stand out. I cannot wait to return to the wasteland once again.

  • CW Developing Live-Action ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Series

CW Developing Live-Action ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Series

No, you read that right. CW has started development on a brand new live-action series based on the popular Cartoon Network show Powerpuff Girls. It will be another Berlanti Production with Diablo Cody, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden as executive producers. Berlanti is well-known for his work on YouRiverdaleDawson’s Creek, and the Arrowverse shows. They are certainly no strangers to CW and this seems to be in their wheelhouse.

According to Variety, the show will focus on the titular characters in their 20s. They have drifted apart and are resentful for wasting their childhood fighting crime. So, we can expect a lot of teen angst throughout the series with plenty of drama. We can probably expect something in the vein of CW’s Riverdale meets The Flash.

Of all series to adapt, this is a strange one. It just recently received a remake that was met with mixed reviews. The designs are also unique, so it’s a show that won’t be easy to translate into live-action. CW had quite the success with their darker adaptations of classic IPs. Yet, I am just having a hard time wrapping my head around this concept. Even as they faced some darker foes like HIM, it still was more comedy driven. Perhaps this version will tie-in to the Gorillaz, as Ace from the Gangreen Gang temporarily became their drummer. At the end of the day, I am quite curious about how they’re going to attempt this adaptation. We’ll have to wait and see what they cook up with Chemical X.

  • HBO Max’ ‘Raised By Wolves’ Trailer Teases Humans vs. Androids

Ridley Scott really loves exploring outer space and our relationship with androids. The famous director behind The Martian and Alien joined up with Prisoners‘ Aaron Guzikowski for a brand new science-fiction story.  The original HBO Max series Raised by Wolves tells the story of two androids named Father and Mother. they were tasked to raise human children on a foreign planet after earth was destroyed. They are then hunted down by a colony of humans that want to take the children back. IGN got an exclusive first look at the series and shared the trailer online to show just how violent it will get.

Some might have recognized Vikings’ Travis Fimmel as the human leader. Not much is known about the series yet but the trailer does seem quite promising. Seems like there is more to Mother than meets the eye. Her violent tendencies seem to grow as the trailer goes by. Especially the hallway scene seemed rather reminiscent of the anime Elfen Lied. Funny enough, Fan4stic tried to do something similar with Doom after he takes down guards.

There are a lot of interesting visuals throughout the trailer for Raised by Wolves. At first it seemed like they gave birth to the humans, so I was surprised when they revealed that they were androids. A major part of this story will explore the impacts of religion which is rushed through a bit. Quite curious how they will try to explore this aspect. This isn’t the first time a robot raising a human was the focus of a TV series or film. Just last year the film I AM MOTHER on Netflix explored a similar relationship. It’s a curious concept that I am glad is getting more attention. I cannot wait to check it out when it releases September 3rd.

  • ‘The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’ Teaser Released

‘The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’ Teaser Released

Sometimes the industry reveals a game that you just don’t know how to feel about. It’s the kind you hear about but never really follow. You start thinking about playing it but you’d rather save up money for the next big release. Then one day, you just end up giving it a try because you heard some great reviews. I had that experience with Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.

While I did love the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy, I would not call myself a die-hard fan of the franchise. What I love about it is the lore and mythology that J. R. R. Tolkien created. This game had such a unique system that I still adore it to this day. It was one of the biggest surprises for me when I decided to buy it. I couldn’t wait to see what else they have planned after Middle-Earth: Shadow of War was released. Well, I didn’t expect a game about Gollum. We even got a short teaser for the upcoming project.

It is a very brief trailer that teases the side of Middle Earth we will explore as the titular Gollum. All we know is that it will be a stealth-action game. Makes absolute sense, as Gollum won’t be running around taking down Orcs with a sword. It is a nice touch to show Mount Doom in the distance, as Gollum sets out for this journey.  I am once again unsure of how to feel about this game. Yet, that is mostly due to the lack of gameplay to get a feeling for how we control the iconic character. Also, I wonder if they will get Andy Serkis to reprise his role from the films.
