Sony must be given credit. Though the studio behind two of the most well-received animated superhero films of all time (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) can’t seem to put together a solid live-action CBM, they truly embody the superhero spirit by never giving up. The studio’s latest effort, Madame Web, hits theaters on Valentine’s Day and was screened for critics ahead of time…and it sounds as though it turned out exactly like everyone thought it would.
“The Worst Comic Book Movie I Have Ever Seen”
With Green Lantern, 2015’s Fant4stic Four and Sony’s own Morbius to compete with, being the worst CBM ever is tall order to be sure, but at least one critic thinks Madame Web may have taken the top spot. Critic Cris Parker called Sony’s latest installment in whatever it is they’re calling their efforts “an embarrassing mess” with a “laughable structure.” Given the current culture of social media, that means in about 6 months people will be talking about how it’s one of their favorite films.
#MadameWeb is an embarrassing mess. Talented stars wasted on probably the worst comic book movie I have ever seen. Filled with atrocious dialogue, awkward editing, & all around laughable structure. I sat there baffled scene by scene someone approved this. The memes will redeem it pic.twitter.com/wwxBZmzf1f
Heroes Unbound found Madame Web’s plot to be “lackluster” and while they indicated it did contain “charming performances”, they ultimately labeled it as nothing more than “a passable movie.” And that’s the nicest thing anyone is saying about it so far.
#MadameWeb is a passable movie with bizarre choices. The plot is lacklustre, featuring powerless yet to be heroes in a scattered story that leads nowhere. Its charming performances, sleek cinematography and 2000s nostalgia are welcome but can’t quite save it. pic.twitter.com/UVIDTygTRa
With a cast that included Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, Sony certainly continued its trend of casting attention-grabbing stars. With that in mind, you’d hope they’d eventually put together a film that grabbed attention in a positive way. Instead, Madame Web is “totally fine” and “just kinda there” according to James Preston Poole.
#MadameWeb is totally fine. There’s really not a lot to say here. The leads are charming. Dakota Johnson is a witchy weirdo. The slasher/FINAL DESTINATION meets superheroes vibes are there. But there’s just not a whole lot to it. Not a disaster. Just kinda there. pic.twitter.com/HVf1jsUBnO
The good news is that as we all know, the early reviews are always the best ones as they’re done by critics who are clearly paid by the studios to get the film some good press (at least that’s what I always read on X), so don’t let these early reviews stop you from seeing Madame Web in theaters! And, don’t forget that Sony’s Kraven the Hunter will also hit theaters later this year!
Sony has found the new Karate Kid. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Monday that Ben Wang will star in the newest Karate Kid film. Wang, who is coming off of American Born Chinese, will join Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio in the film.
Wang’s casting comes after Sony held a global search, which reportedly saw over 10,000 video submissions within the first 24 hours after it was announced. Wang’s audition is said to have “demonstrated a deep connection to the character.” The studio also loved that Wang is fluent in Mandarin and is highly skilled in various forms of martial arts. Sony is keeping details regarding the film quiet for now, however, the film will see the franchise head to the East coast and focus on a teen from China.
If you’ve been following us here for some time, this shouldn’t be surprising. We here are Murphy’s Multiverse first revealed Sony’s plans to revisit the Karate Kid franchise on the big screen in 2022. In our report, we noted that the actor will need to be fluent in Mandarin, we also revealed the film will see the character move from Beijing to Brooklyn.
The film is currently slated to hit theaters on December 13th, 2024.
On Monday, TV Line announced that Hulu is no longer moving forward with the previously announced adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses. The hugely popular book series, written by author Sarah J. Maas, is a BookTok darling and seemed like a huge catch for the streamer. It’s currently unclear why the series is currently not moving forward, however, TV Line also confirmed 20th Television/Disney currently have no plans to shop the project to other outlets. The decision not to shop the project around could suggest it’ll be reworked/redeveloped at a later time, although that has not been confirmed.
The news of the show’s status comes shortly after the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. During his presentation for Disney, Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, was asked to comment on the status of A Court of Thorns and Roses. However, at the time, Erwich simply noted that there wasn’t much he could share. “That show has been in development, but I don’t have any news to share today.”
The show was being developed by Ronald D. Moore and Maas. It’s of note, as of November, Moore had told TV Line that the project was still in development, explaining they had written some scripts. At the time, Moore told the outlet they were waiting before things really moved forward. “I think the whole town is kind of waiting to see if we have actors before things really move forward, but it’s still in development.”
After bringing Matthew Orton on to rewrite parts of the film, Captain America: Brave New World still has plenty of work to do before it hits screens in 2025. Rumors persist that the film’s first action scene–which apparently featured the Serpent Society–has been totally cut from the film. While the extent of the reshoots is unknown, Harrison Ford‘s role as the MCU’s new Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross is safe and a piece of crew merchandise seemingly confirms that his gamma-fueled alter ego will indeed make an appearance in the film.
A pair of pictures that first appeared on Reddit give a good look at the new logo for the film, which was retitled from Captain America: New World Order, and a second very ominous logo.
While there’s been little doubt that Ross’ appearance in the film would lead to him finally becoming the Red Hulk, the logo confirms that transformation will take place while also seemingly indicating that Sam Wilson’s Captain America will square off against Ross’ Red Hulk in the film.
On Monday, it was revealed that director David Leitch was in talks to helm a brand new Jurassic World movie for Universal. At the time, it was noted that talks were still early, and a deal had not officially been made. Unfortunately, it looks like, as of Friday, Leitch is no longer in talks to direct the movie. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Friday that the Deadpool 2 director has exited the project.
It’s said the deal ultimately broke down due to a difference in vision between Leitch and Universal. With a release date already set, Universal will need to move quickly in order to secure a new director if it hopes to keep the movie on track for its release next year.
The Jurassic World franchise has been a huge box office success for Universal. The first film, which debuted in 2015, went on to earn an impressive $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. The sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, released three years later, and earned $1.3 billion. The final film in the trilogy, Jurassic World: Dominion, released in 2022 and managed to still bring in $1.1 billion despite COVID-19’s impact on the box office.
The next Jurassic World film is currently slated to hit theaters on July 2, 2025.
The Conjuring is coming to an end. The Hollywood Reported revealed on Friday that Michael Chaves will direct The Conjuring 4. The film is expected to serve as the final film in the mainline franchise. This marks a return for Chaves, who previously directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. He also directed The Nun II, which takes place within the world of The Conjuring. Also returning to the franchise is David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who wrote the screenplay and previously penned the third film alongside franchise creator, James Wan.
Details are being kept under wraps regarding the fourth installment, however, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are expected to return as Ed and Lorrain Warren. Production on the movie looks set to kickoff over the summer in Atlanta.
The Conjuring, which was released in 2013, quickly turned into a hit franchise when the movie pulled in $320 million at the worldwide box office. A huge feat for a film produced for just $20 million. Over the years, New Line has crafted a Conjuring film franchise that includes the Nun films, the Annabelle films, and The Curse of La Llorona.
As of now, The Conjuring 4 does not yet have a release date.
Dan Trachtenberg resurrected the Predator franchise with 2022’s Prey. Now, 20th Century is handing him the keys to the kingdom. Multiple trade reports have confirmed that Trachtenberg will direct another film in the franchise titled Badlands.
While the end credits of Prey set up the possibility of a direct sequel to that film, Badlands is NOT that sequel though 20th Century is still developing that project with star Amber Midthunder in mind to return. Instead, Badlands, which was co-written by Patrick Aison, will feature a new female lead and be set in the future. Production is expected to kick off this July.
Trachtenberg is also reportedly now 20th Century’s Predator curator with “a host” of projects based on the franchise in the works.
Netflix’s The Punisher Season 1 introduces viewers to a world where justice is not always black and white, but rather shades of grey. Frank Castle emerges as a tortured anti-hero, grappling with the trauma of his past and the relentless pursuit of those who wronged him. As the season unfolds, audiences are drawn into a gritty and morally ambiguous tale of vengeance, redemption, and the cost of pursuing one’s own brand of justice in a world consumed by corruption and violence.
Origin Story
After meeting him in Daredevil Season 2, viewers are thrust into the harrowing origin story of Frank Castle, a former Marine whose life is shattered when his family is brutally murdered in a botched assassination attempt. The series opens with Frank believed dead after exacting vengeance on those responsible for his family’s death, only to resurface as the vigilante known as “The Punisher.” Haunted by the loss of his loved ones and fueled by a relentless thirst for justice, Frank becomes a force to be reckoned with in the criminal underworld of New York City.
Flashbacks throughout the season provide insight into Frank’s past, revealing his time as a Marine serving overseas and the events that ultimately led to his transformation into The Punisher. These glimpses into his past showcase the toll that war and violence have taken on Frank, shaping him into the hardened and determined vigilante viewers encounter in the present day. As Frank navigates the treacherous landscape of the criminal underworld, his actions are driven not only by a desire for vengeance but also by a sense of duty to protect others from suffering the same fate as his family.
Amidst his quest for justice, Frank forms an unlikely alliance with David Lieberman (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), a former NSA analyst known as Micro, who provides him with crucial information and support. Together, they uncover a far-reaching conspiracy involving government agencies and powerful individuals, further fueling Frank’s determination to dismantle the corrupt system that destroyed his life. As Frank’s journey unfolds, audiences are drawn deeper into the complexities of his character, grappling with themes of morality, loyalty, and the fine line between justice and vengeance.
Vengeance Unleashed
Castle’s relentless quest for vengeance propels the narrative forward, driving him to confront the demons of his past while navigating the treacherous landscape of New York City’s criminal underworld. Armed with his military training, tactical expertise, and a steely determination, Frank adopts the persona of “The Punisher,” a vigilante determined to mete out justice to those who have wronged him and innocent victims alike.
As Frank embarks on his crusade, he becomes a force of nature, utilizing his skills as a marksman, hand-to-hand combatant, and strategist to dismantle criminal organizations and exact revenge on those responsible for his family’s murder. With each calculated strike, Frank leaves a trail of destruction in his wake, earning him the moniker of “The Punisher” among both his allies and enemies alike. However, beneath his tough exterior lies a man haunted by the memories of his past, grappling with the moral implications of his actions and the toll that his quest for vengeance takes on his soul.
Throughout the season, Frank’s journey is punctuated by intense confrontations with various adversaries, including corrupt officials, ruthless mercenaries, and former allies turned enemies. His interactions with key figures such as Micro and Dinah Madani (Amber Rose Revah), a Homeland Security agent, further complicate his mission and add layers of intrigue to the narrative. Despite facing insurmountable odds and betrayals from unexpected quarters, Frank remains steadfast in his resolve, driven by a sense of duty to protect the innocent and avenge the memory of his fallen loved ones. As the season unfolds, viewers are drawn into Frank’s world, where justice is meted out with brutal efficiency, and the line between hero and villain becomes increasingly blurred.
Alliances and Betrayals
Castle’s journey is marked by a delicate balance of forming alliances and navigating treacherous betrayals in his relentless pursuit of justice. Alongside Madan and Curtis Hoyle (Jason R. Moore), a loyal friend and fellow Marine, Frank forges alliances born out of mutual respect and shared objectives. Their collaboration adds depth to Frank’s mission, as they pool their resources and expertise to unravel the sinister web of corruption that plagues the city.
However, amidst the camaraderie and shared goals, betrayal lurks around every corner, threatening to upend Frank’s carefully laid plans. The revelation that his former best friend, Billy Russo (Ben Barnes), is entangled with the very individuals Frank seeks to dismantle comes as a devastating blow. Billy’s betrayal cuts deep, shattering Frank’s trust and igniting a bitter sense of betrayal that fuels his resolve to bring those responsible to justice, no matter the cost.
As the season progresses, the intricate web of alliances and betrayals becomes increasingly tangled, blurring the lines between friend and foe. Frank must navigate a dangerous landscape where loyalties are tested and allegiances are fleeting, all while staying true to his moral code and unwavering commitment to his mission. In the face of betrayal, Frank’s determination only grows stronger, driving him to confront his enemies head-on and ensure that justice is served, no matter how high the stakes.
Confronting Demons
Season 1 delves deep Castle’s psyche as he confronts his inner demons and grapples with the traumatic events that have shaped him into The Punisher. Flashbacks to his time in the military serve as poignant reminders of the horrors he witnessed and the sacrifices he made, highlighting the toll that war has taken on his soul. These glimpses into his past reveal a man haunted by guilt and regret, struggling to reconcile his actions with his sense of morality.
As Frank navigates the present-day challenges of his vigilante persona, he finds solace and understanding in his interactions with Karen Page. Their connection transcends the surface level, as Karen becomes a confidante to Frank, offering him a glimpse of humanity amidst the darkness that consumes him. Through their conversations, Frank grapples with questions of identity and purpose, finding moments of clarity and introspection in Karen’s unwavering support.
However, as Frank delves deeper into the shadows of his past, he is forced to confront uncomfortable truths and painful memories that threaten to consume him. The juxtaposition of his present-day struggles with his past traumas adds depth to his character, showcasing the internal turmoil that drives his relentless pursuit of justice. Despite the weight of his demons, Frank remains steadfast in his resolve, determined to find redemption and make peace with the ghosts that haunt him.
Deadly Showdowns
The tension reaches its boiling point in as Castle embarks on a series of high-stakes confrontations with the individuals culpable for the brutal murder of his family. The culmination of his relentless pursuit of justice leads to a climactic showdown where Frank confronts the mastermind behind the conspiracy: Billy Russo. Once Frank’s closest friend and ally, Billy’s descent into villainy culminates in his transformation into the disfigured and merciless adversary known as “Jigsaw,” adding a layer of personal stakes to their final confrontation.
As the battle unfolds, viewers are drawn into a gripping showdown fraught with intensity and emotion. Frank’s combat skills and tactical prowess are put to the test as he engages in a relentless struggle against his former friend turned nemesis. The clash between The Punisher and Jigsaw is not just physical but psychological, as they grapple with their shared history and the devastating consequences of their actions.
Amidst the chaos and carnage of their showdown, themes of vengeance, betrayal, and redemption converge in a poignant and explosive climax. The resolution of their conflict serves as a defining moment for both characters, as Frank confronts the demons of his past while Billy reckons with the consequences of his choices. In the aftermath of their deadly confrontation, the landscape of The Punisher’s world is forever altered.
Redemption and Sacrifice
The theme of redemption and sacrifice looms large in Season 1 as Frank grapples with the consequences of his actions and the moral complexities of his vigilantism. Throughout the season, Frank is forced to confront his own morality and the blurred lines between right and wrong as he navigates a world where justice is often elusive and the cost of righteousness steep. Despite the personal toll of his crusade, Frank remains steadfast in his commitment to bringing justice to those who deserve it, even if it means sacrificing his own well-being in the process.
As the season draws to a close, viewers bear witness to Frank’s transformation from a grieving widower consumed by vengeance to a hardened vigilante embracing his role as The Punisher. His journey is one of self-discovery and redemption, as he grapples with the demons of his past and finds solace in the pursuit of justice. The season finale serves as a poignant culmination of Frank’s arc, as he embraces his destiny and prepares to continue his mission of righting the wrongs of the world, no matter the personal cost.
Ultimately, Season 1 leaves viewers with a sense of catharsis and anticipation for what lies ahead. Frank’s journey is one of redemption and sacrifice, as he confronts his own demons and embraces his role as a symbol of justice in a world plagued by corruption and violence. As the credits roll, viewers are left with a sense of hope and excitement for the next chapter in The Punisher’s story, eager to see where Frank’s quest for redemption will take him next.
Steve Jobs once said “you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” HBO must have taken those words to heart as they continue to push the story of Game of Thrones further into the past of Westeros. According to THR, HBO is developing a series around Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote Matt Reeves‘ The Batman Part II is penning the prequel for HBO.
Aegon’s Conquest will be the third Game of Thrones franchise spinoff since the original ended its run in 2019. House of the Dragon‘s sophomore season is set to stream this summer and production will begin soon on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, a series based on the Dunk and Eggs stories.
In the expansive history of George R.R. Martin’s fictional world detailed in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, Aegon’s Conquest took place roughy 110-130 years before the events of House of the Dragon and over 400 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Aegon’s Conquest refers to the invasion and subsequent unification of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros by Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, riding on their dragons. Their rule solidified the Targaryens’ control over the realm for nearly three centuries. Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, carries the blood of Aegon through her father, Aerys II Targaryen, also known as the Mad King. This familial connection links Daenerys to the great legacy of her ancestor, Aegon the Conqueror, and his conquering dragons.
About Aegon’s Conquest
Prelude to Conquest: Aegon’s Landing and the Birth of Ambition
Aegon Targaryen, along with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, embarked on an audacious journey to Westeros with their dragons and a modest army. Their arrival marked the beginning of a saga that would reshape the continent forever. Born of Valyrian blood and wielding the power of dragons, Aegon’s ambition knew no bounds. With dreams of forging a unified realm under his rule, he set his sights on the fractious Seven Kingdoms, determined to bend them to his will. As the last scion of House Targaryen, Aegon carried with him the legacy of his ancestors and the weight of destiny, driven by a singular purpose: to carve out a new empire amidst the chaos of warring kingdoms.
Harrenhal’s Fall: Dragonfire and the End of an Era
Aegon’s first conquest was the legendary Harrenhal, seat of House Hoare. King Harren the Black’s defiance met a fiery end when Aegon’s dragons reduced the imposing castle to ashes, heralding the dawn of a new era in the Riverlands. The destruction of Harrenhal sent shockwaves throughout Westeros, demonstrating the devastating power of dragonfire and the futility of resistance against Aegon’s might.
Storm’s End and the Baratheon Legacy
The Stormlands fell next to Aegon’s might as he clashed with King Argilac the Arrogant. The decisive Battle of the Last Storm saw the defeat of House Durrandon and the rise of House Baratheon, with Orys Baratheon earning both the lordship and the hand of Argilac’s daughter. With Storm’s End secured and House Baratheon firmly established, Aegon strengthened his foothold in the southern regions of Westeros, laying the groundwork for his further conquests.
Conflagration in the Reach: Victory at the Field of Fire
The fertile fields of the Reach became the battleground for Aegon’s ambitions as he confronted the armies of House Gardener. The Field of Fire witnessed the unparalleled might of Aegon’s dragons, resulting in the submission of House Gardener and the ascension of House Tyrell as stewards of the Reach. With the Reach firmly under his control, Aegon solidified his position as the preeminent power in southern Westeros, setting the stage for his conquest of the western kingdoms.
The Westerlands and the Last Stand
Aegon’s conquest culminated in the Westerlands, where King Loren Lannister and King Mern IX Gardener made their final stand. The Battle of the Mander sealed their fate, with House Lannister and House Gardener meeting their demise and paving the way for House Stark and House Tully to rise as paramount rulers. With the fall of the last remaining kingdoms resisting his rule, Aegon’s dominance over the Seven Kingdoms was complete, ushering in a new era of Targaryen supremacy.
Legacy of the Conquest: The Targaryen Dynasty and Beyond
With the Seven Kingdoms united under his rule, Aegon the Conqueror was crowned King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, marking the dawn of the Targaryen dynasty. His reign laid the foundation for centuries of Targaryen rule, shaping the fate of Westeros for generations to come. Aegon’s conquest would echo through the annals of history, leaving an indelible mark on the realm and setting the stage for the turbulent events that would follow in its wake.
Aegon’s Conquest Resonates Through the Ages
Aegon’s conquest remains a defining chapter in the history of Westeros, a testament to the power of ambition, courage, and the relentless pursuit of destiny. From the ashes of conflict rose the Iron Throne, forging a new era of unity and turmoil that would echo throughout the annals of time. As the Seven Kingdoms united under the banner of House Targaryen, the stage was set for centuries of intrigue, betrayal, and struggle for power, ensuring that Aegon’s legacy would endure for generations to come.
Amazon Prime’s Reacher remains a hit for the streaming service and with a third season already in production, a pair of actors have joined the cast.
According to a trade report, 80s Brat Packer Anthony Michael Hall (Halloween Kills, The Dead Zone) and Sonya Cassidy (The Man Who Fell to Earth) have signed on for recurring roles in Season 3.
Based on a series of novels by author Lee Child, Reacher follows the exploits of Alan Ritchson‘s title character, a former Army Intelligence Officer who has taken to walking the Earth and stumbling into wrongs that need righting. Season 3 will reportedly adapt the novel Persuader, which finds Reacher paired with the DEA to take down Zachary Beck, a major criminal involved in some big time wheeling and dealing.
According to the trade report, Hall will portray Beck–which puts him right in punching distance of Reacher–and Cassidy will play a DEA agent by the name of Susan Duffy–which puts her in reach of another of Reacher’s appendages.
