  • Warner Bros. Discovery Held Screenings of ‘Batgirl’ for the Cast and Crew

Warner Bros. Discovery Held Screenings of ‘Batgirl’ for the Cast and Crew

Weeks after canceling Batgirl, Warner Bros. Discovery has reportedly held screenings of the film on the studio lot. The news comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, with the outlet reporting that the secret screenings were for people who worked on the film, both cast and crew, as well as representatives and executives. According to the outlet, many have referred to the screenings as “funeral screenings,” held before the film is ultimately locked away forever.

News of the screenings comes days after directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah revealed they no longer had access to the film. After trying to recover some of the footage from the canceled film, the duo found that everything had been removed from the server. At the time, it was thought the studio had already deleted all footage from Batgirl, that appears to not be the case, though. It’s thought that Warner Bros. Discovery might actually opt to destroy all footage from Batgirl in order to prove to the IRS that the studio will never receive any revenue from the film following the requested tax write-off. Of course, there’s also the potential that the studio will just decide to lock the footage away in a vault, much like with the canceled Game of Thrones spinoff pilot, Bloodmoon.

In recent weeks, many have speculated whether or not Batgirl could be reborn ala Zack Snyder’s Justice League. However, the latter’s original footage was still accessible by the director after he departed the film due to a personal tragedy. With El Arbi and Fallah no longer having access to their footage, and the film being a tax write-off, that seems incredibly unlikely.

  • ‘Aquaman 2’ Director Teases First Look at the Lost Kingdom With New Concept Art

‘Aquaman 2’ Director Teases First Look at the Lost Kingdom With New Concept Art

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has just been delayed by quite a few months as it’ll now not hit theaters until December of 2023. OF course, an extra wait is going to be quite frustrating with the film has gone through a few delays already. Even Shazam: Fury of the Gods was pushed back and took its original March 2023 release date. Still, it seems that director James Wan didn’t want to keep people waiting too long for a glimpse at the sequel and took to his personal Instagram account to share some beautiful concept art.

What stands out is that this might be our first tease of the Lost Kingdom in the title of the project. Of course, it doesn’t give away an actual look or confirmation if this is indeed the relocation but it’s a fun addition to speculate. He also goes on to highlight that this is just a glimpse of what they have to offer, which definitely teases just how big the scope is for this sequel.

It’s a shame that the wait has been extended for quite a few months but we’ll hopefully get more teases as we get closer to the release. It is crazy to think that 2022 looked quite a bit different earlier this year when they teased releases of The Batman, Black Adam, The Flash, and the Aquaman sequel in one year only for it to end up with two of the advertised releases. We’ll have to see just how consistent they will be with next year going by this trend currently.

  • ‘Aquaman 2’ and ‘Shazam 2’ Faces Another Delay But Eyeing 2023 Release

‘Aquaman 2’ and ‘Shazam 2’ Faces Another Delay But Eyeing 2023 Release

It looks like Warner Bros. Discovery is busy shuffling their schedules once again, as we have a new delay of various projects. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been pushed back again to December 25th, 2023. This is a massive jump considering it was already pushed back and wasn’t going to release in March next year. There’s a likely chance that they are trying to rekindle the $1 billion they made in December 2018 with the first Aquaman movie. Interestingly enough, it seems The Flash is still gunning for its current release date.

That is not all, as Shazam: Fury of the Gods is now also pushed back once again. It was already pushed to release earlier on December 21st but now is taking over Aquaman‘s March release date. Perhaps they are hoping to replicate The Batman‘s legs with this release, but also move away from the danger that is Avatar: The Way of Water. Though it seemed like the Shazam sequel had a chance to create its own market as it had a very different demographic going against the Avatar sequel. Still, one can’t blame a studio for playing it safe with that giant tidal wave on the horizon.

That is not all, as the upcoming Evil Dead Rise film is now a theatrical release alongside New Line’s House Party. These were originally HBO Max exclusives but highlight David Zaslav‘s continued move away from something he believes is not worth the investment for the streaming service. The Nun 2 is also set to release in September 2023 with an untitled event film scheduled for the upcoming Super Bowl weekend. We’ll have to see if anything else gets changed at this rate.

  • RUMOR: ‘WandaVision’ Director May Direct MCU’s ‘Fantastic Four’

RUMOR: ‘WandaVision’ Director May Direct MCU’s ‘Fantastic Four’

Fantastic Four has been announced quite a long time ago, but it’s been surrounded by quite a few rumors. With D23 on the horizon, it does make for an interesting topic on the internet. In a surprising move, Spider-Man director Jon Watts passed on the project. While we’ve been anxiously awaiting who might take over, it seems that The Direct has shared that according to their sources WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman might be the one to take on this role.

We still have to take it as a rumor but it’s definitely a curious reveal. if it turns out real. Shakman has been on the top list for many Hollywood projects after he made quite the impact with his work on the first Marvel Disney+ series. He’s been signed up to tackle the next Star Trek film in the Kelvin timeline and even episodes of the Godzilla spinoff for Apple TV+.

Marvel Studios has a lot of hope with the Fantastic Four adaptation, especially with its legacy of some mixed-reviewed entries from 20th Century Fox. Fantastic Four from 2015 had left a bit of a sour taste with many for a darker take on Marvel’s first family. So, there’s hope that the sci-fi-based superhero team gets another chance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We already got our first look at Mr. Fantastic in the multiverse of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. John Krasinski, a long-time fan cast for the role, took it on only to meet his untimely end at the hands of the Scarlet Witch. We’ll have to see if he will return in the role or if they will try to establish their own take on the team for the MCU.

  • Olivia Wilde Plays Coy on Rumored ‘Spider-Woman’ Project

Olivia Wilde Plays Coy on Rumored ‘Spider-Woman’ Project

Olivia Wilde is currently busy promoting her upcoming release of Don’t Worry Darling, but that didn’t stop Variety from asking a few questions about her upcoming Marvel project. It’s been long rumored that she might be working on a project focused on Spider-Woman for Sony but even hinted that Kevin Feige was involved at one point. Sadly, she remains quite co on what exactly the project is.

That, I can’t say a word about. Yeah, no — I can’t say anything about it. I have to bury myself in the couch now.

    Olivia Wilde

While trying not to give anything away, she does actually tease what it’s like working on a Marvel project and how welcoming they are to filmmakers to play in their playbox.

I will say that I think the Marvel approach of allowing newer filmmakers to come into the fold and have access to those tools of the Marvel universe is incredibly exciting. I am a big fan of what they’re doing over there, but, yeah, I can’t confirm whether that is what that is.

    Olivia Wilde

It’s curious she still can’t talk about the project. Madame Web was rushed out with quite a bit of fanfare once it was announced. So, it seems like Wilde is given a lot of time to develop the project at her own terms and who knows if there might be some hint at what it is in the near future.

  • Simu Liu Joins Jennifer Lopez in Netflix’s ‘Atlas’ as a Villain

Simu Liu Joins Jennifer Lopez in Netflix’s ‘Atlas’ as a Villain

After having become world-renowned for his portrayal of the titular hero in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Simu Liu is slated to portray someone on the dark side in Netflix’s Atlas. The actor has signed on to play the antagonist opposite Jennifer Lopez. In addition, it’s been revealed that Sterling K. Brown has also joined the cast in an unknown key role. Brad Peyton is set to helm the project with Aron Eli Coleite currently writing a new draft of the script based off of Leo Sardarian’s original script.

Atlas is set to heavily involve the concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Jennifer Lopez stars in the titular role as she fights for the future of humanity due to an AI who has broken bad (assumedly, this will be Simu Liu’s role in the film) with the agenda of killing the species for the sake of the world peace. Due to this, Lopez’s Atlas must work with a different AI as the only chance to defeat this villain.

With this new role, Simu Liu has continued his fast ascent into the upper echelon of modern Hollywood with a large variety of roles. Fans of Liu will have the ability to see the actor continue to branch out his acting range with his upcoming portrayal of a Ken doll in Warner Bros’ Barbie film alongside Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. That film is due for its theatrical release in the summer of 2023. He joins a distinguished group of fellow actors in playing characters on both sides of the morality aisle. Though it certainly remains to be seen if Atlas can match the same level of success Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has maintained on both a commercial and critical level.

  • John Penney Debuts a First Look at His New Novel, ‘It Comes Back’

John Penney Debuts a First Look at His New Novel, ‘It Comes Back’

Award-winning writer & director John Penney has unveiled the first look at his latest psychological horror novel, It Comes Back. In a twist, though, the author has launched a Crowdfundr campaign in which fans will be able to help shape the story.

The first two chapters of It Comes Back will be available through Crowdfundr beginning September 15th. Penney is actively seeking feedback from readers to help “shape the story through to the end.” Fans that participate in the Crowdfundr campaign will not only receive the story early but will also get the chance to have a character named after them, signed previous works and one-on-one meetings with John himself, who can “impart his wisdom with fellow writing enthusiasts.”

“I have spent my career writing screenplays for films, including “Return of the Living Dead 3“, “The Kindred” and “Re-Animator Unbound.” Although the process has been rewarding, my best creative experiences have been the two novels I wrote “Truck Stop” and “Killing Time.” Crowdfundr gives me the opportunity to pursue writing novels. There are no barriers between my ideas and the reader. The connection is pure and I can express myself one on one. This is pure joy. Crowdfundr also allows me to hear back from my readers directly.”

    Penney

It Comes Back focuses on Allison Cutter, a typical housewife living in California with her husband, Ray. After waking up one night, she finds herself alone in bed with her husband nowhere to be found. As she goes in search for him, she finds a mysterious nude man with slashed wrists in her kitchen. Before she has the chance go in search of help, Allison is stabbed seven times while Rey flees from the police, only to be apprehended in Yucca Valley. What follows is a story of a man framed for his wife’s murder and a sinister truth everyone will soon discover.

Fans can access the Crowdfundr campaign by going here.

Penney is perhaps best known for writing and directing the supernatural thriller, Hellgate, which starred William Hurt and Cary Elwes. He has also written and directed films such as Zyzzyx Road, starring Katherine Heigl, and Magic featuring Christopher Lloyd. Other books by Penney include 2012’s Truck Stop and 2013’s Killing Time.

  • Disney+’s ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ Adds Christian Slater as Mulgarath

Disney+’s ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ Adds Christian Slater as Mulgarath

The upcoming Disney+ adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles has found its Mulgarath, as Christian Slater is set to take on the role in the live-action adaptation of the fantasy books. The character is an ogre that eats people and has an insatiable desire to consume. Still, his true goal is to uncover the secrets within Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Natural World that may be what could satisfy his hunger. Slater is definitely a great choice for the character.

We don’t know how exactly they’ll adapt the iconic book series, as they could go with a darker take or stick to some of the goofier looks from earlier designs. It’s interesting that Diseny+ is building up its own iconic franchises based on popular young adult novels, such as a live-action Percy Jackson series also in active development.

Kat Coiro is set to direct the first two episodes of the series with Paramount Television Studios involved alongside 20th Television. There’s no word on if Mulgarath will be a practical design or mostly be brought to life through CG, but it does seem like they are all in with these projects. The character was previously played by Nick Nolte in the 2008 adaptation and we’ll see what unique twist Slater might bring to the role.

  • ‘Aquaman 2’ Star Teases “Way More Humor” for the Sequel

‘Aquaman 2’ Star Teases “Way More Humor” for the Sequel

It’s safe to say that Warner Bros. Discovery is a bit in shambles. At the moment, we have no idea what exactly they are trying to do moving forward. It was hinted that they are trying to establish a singular DC Universe but also continue work on Joker and The Batman sequels. Some older projects from the original DCEU under Walter Hamada‘s run are still in development, such as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

While the drama surrounding The Flash and Ezra Miller has already overshadowed most of the upcoming projects, the Aquaman sequel wasn’t safe from it either. Amber Heard‘s trial with Johnny Depp has also thrown a shadow over the project with uncertainty about how much she’ll actually be featured in the sequel. While there is a lot of back and forth on the exact number, its main star Jason Momoa used the chance to tease a lot more comedy in the sequel while promoting his series See.

In an interview with Variety, he talked about what it was like having Ben Affleck back on the set. He teases that there will be “way more humor” and that they had “a lot of laughs” while filming it. So, it seems that the tone from the first entry will return and even double down. There’s no exact details on how the story will be, but they have been rumors hinting at an unlikely duo of Aquaman and his half-brother Ocean Master having to team-up throughout their adventure. So, it sounds like it could be another blast at the theater.

  • Disney+ Working on Live-Action ‘King Kong’ Series

Disney+ Working on Live-Action ‘King Kong’ Series

The Monsterverse is getting some competition as Diseny+ is currently working on a live-action series based on the icon King Kong. As revealed b Variety, the project is in early development but it would not only explore Kong’s origins but also Skull Island. It’ll be based on Merian C. Cooper‘s original and a new novelization by Joe DeVito.

Paper GirlsStephany Folsom is developing the series and acts as its executive producer. She’ll be joined b James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett from Atomic Monster alongside World Builder Entertainment’s Dannie Festa.

King Kong has been a monster icon since the 1933 film. he’s gone on to receive a variety of projects including a remake in 2005 by Peter Jackson. There’s no clear mark on how the rights work surrounding this project with the Warner Bros. and Legendary Monsterverse franchise using the character in various projects.

Netflix is also working on an animated series titled Skull island, which is supposedly connected to it. Apple TV+ received the rights to a Godzilla spinoff, which may also potentially feature the iconic ape in some fashion or another. We’ll have to see how it develops as there’s also the untitled Godzilla vs. Kong sequel that supposedly is a modern interpretation of Son of Kong. So, the ape’s future in media is definitely secured.
