SGF: New Look at ‘Resident Evil 4’ Remake Released

While it wasn’t much, we did get a new look at the upcoming remake of Resident Evil 4 that promises to take what made the original classic and add a new flair to rejuvenate the classic. While Capcom is still playing a bit coy on the project that is eyeing a March release next year, we did at least get a tease of what’s to come with the new entry. One thing is for sure, we’ve come a long way with the RE Engine and the atmosphere is definitely something to keep players hooked once it releases.

  • ‘Persona’ Return Also Set for Steam and PlayStation

‘Persona’ Return Also Set for Steam and PlayStation

Just yesterday, we got the big announcement that not only will Persona 5 Royal finally make its way to Xbox, but it’ll be joined by Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden. The two games have been popular requests for ports on many platforms but it turns out that the showcase was just a confirmation that the ports are happening and are available on Xbox Game Pass. Yet, the official statement has seemingly hinted at the games also heading to Steam and PlayStation.

The press release includes the statement “These beloved games will also be heading to Steam and PlayStation 5” which is an interesting surprise but good to hear for those from other consoles hoping to get their hands on it. Yet, the biggest surprise is that even the oldest entries aren’t joining Nintendo Switch. Persona 4 Golden is already available on Steam and likely set the path of these classics getting added on consoles.

Ever since Joker became a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it seemed a definite that they’d find their way to the console. Even Banjo-Kazooie somehow managed to get added. Yet, the recent announcement does not include the Nintendo console that only provides the Strikers sequel that continues the story of the first Persona 5 entry even though the game is not available either. We’ll have to see if they may announce something in the near future.

  • ‘Paddington’ is Heading to Peru in Third Installment, New Director Tackling Franchise

‘Paddington’ is Heading to Peru in Third Installment, New Director Tackling Franchise

It looks like the long-awaited masterpiece of Paddington 3 has finally started getting some momentum. After the loveable bear shared tea with the Queen, it seems that his next adventure is going to see him heading out to Peru. Director Dougal Wilson will take on the task of the third entry in the franchise and continue the magic that was Paddington 2. Wilson shared the following statement in regard to the new project:

It’s a massive responsibility, but all my efforts will be focussed on making a third film that honours the love so many people have for this very special bear.

    Dougal Wilson

The film will be titled quite straightforward with Paddington in Peru. It will act as Wilson’s theatrical debut after he mainly focused his work on music videos and commercials. Paul King is sadly stepping down from his work on the franchise after directing the first two entries, as he’s busy with Timothee Chalamet‘s Wonka. However, he did share a statement on passing the torch.

After ten years of working on the Paddington movies, I feel absurdly protective of the little bear, and I’m delighted that Dougal will be there to hold his paw as he embarks on his third big-screen adventure. Dougal’s work is never less than astounding: funny, beautiful, heartfelt, imaginative, and totally original. Aunt Lucy once asked us to ‘Please Look After This Bear.’ I know Dougal will do so admirably.

    Paul King

Production is eyeing a start in 2023 with filming in London and Peru scheduled. It pretty much is a chance for the loveable bear to travel back home and wee may see the family of the bear and further explore what led to him finding his way to London’s Paddington station.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Gorr the God Butcher is One of the MCU’s “Most Sympathetic Villains”

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Gorr the God Butcher is One of the MCU’s “Most Sympathetic Villains”

We’ve long been awaiting the arrival of Christian Bale‘s Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder. The marketing has been holding back quite a bit with our first look of the villain only arriving in the second trailer. While his look is quite a departure from the comics, it does seem like Taika Waititi has put in a lot of love for the character. Not only did the villain seemingly “tested the highest” of any Marvel villains, which also includes some heavy-hitters like Thanos, but he describes Bale’s characters as one of “the most sympathetic villains they’ve had” so far as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The director also highlighted that their work on Thor: Ragnarok seemingly has sparked the interest for Bale to venture into a comic book adaptation once more. It seems to have fun like they did bring the film to life was a big reason he wanted to give it a go, and Waititi‘s comedy definitely seems like it had a guiding hand for the actor’s venture into the MCU.

What we did with Ragnarok made these movies appealing to other actors as well. Christian saw that and was like “I want to do something fun” and wanted to be part of this thing.

    Taika Waititi

Not only giving the actor something fun to do but also offering the audience a sympathetic villain is definitely something that’ll still manage to leave a chill down their spine. We’ll see how the MCU continues to evolve and offer a fun playground for any actor interested in giving it a shot.

  • Former ‘Fast X’ Director to Adapt Sony’s Live-Action ‘One Punch Man’

Former ‘Fast X’ Director to Adapt Sony’s Live-Action ‘One Punch Man’

If you’ve been wondering if the live-action adaptation of One Punch Man is still happening, we just got the confirmation Now that Justin Lin’s schedule has opened up after leaving Fast X behind, he has seemingly jumped on his next project. The film is set to be written by Jumanji: The Next Level and Venom‘s duo Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. They will develop the film for Sony Pictures, who acquired the rights from Shueisha and will see Avi Arad and Ari Arad in producing roles. Lin is also set to join as a producer and will help rewrite an earlier draft of the film.

It looks like they aren’t going to waste much time on the project either, as they are planning to start production on the film by the end of the year. It’s unclear if they will stick to the Japanese aspects of the story which explores the story of Saitama in a world filled with superheroes, as he is cursed to be so powerful he can defeat anyone with a single punch.

Originally, the series started off as a webcomic by artist ONE before it went viral and started publishing on Tonari no Young Jump Next with Yusuke Murata providing illustrations. With some iconic visuals and a hilarious base concept, Saitama’s story has become a sensation and even joined New York Times Manga Bestsellers list. the series was even nominated for a Harvey and Eisner Award, highlighting just how massive this project has become over the years.

  • REVIEW: ‘Lightyear’ is More Than Just Science Fiction

REVIEW: ‘Lightyear’ is More Than Just Science Fiction

In the words of director Angus MacLane, science fiction is a mustard. This is simply to say that, when applied to the sandwich of storytelling, genre is just the condiment you spread on top of a meatier center to spice things up. Lightyear, the latest creation from Pixar’s acclaimed kitchen, is absolutely coated in mustard. It’s an unabashed love letter to every space-faring, reality-warping, robot-fueled adventure that came before it. Science fiction is seeping from every corner, a preparation which only serves to enhance the spread’s flavor. However, a movie cannot survive on aesthetic alone. The dish needs something else to make it really worth consuming. Luckily, Lightyear is a fully nutritional meal.

Let’s run through the recipe. First, as with any good sandwich, you must select a satisfying bread. This is important because the bread functions as the face of the whole platter. It’s the first thing people see when they look at the art, and when they take a bite, it’s the initial majority of what they’ll taste. In film, this would be the production value. It’s the look and feel of the movie, not just in genre, but in cinematography and score as well. As it turns out, the team behind Pixar’s first major Toy Story spin-off can bake one heck of a bread. MacLane and his crew of animators have designed what might be one of Pixar’s most gorgeous projects yet. Massive set pieces give the film a surprisingly large scope, and colorful designs give life to beautiful environments. There are moments where animation gives way to a visual perception of reality, and Michael Giacchino delivers with yet another awe-inspiring score. Truly, a gift to the senses.

Next comes the meat. The main event. It’s what fills people up and leaves them wanting more. It’s where teeth sink in and don’t want to let go. As previously stated, a common mistake is to believe that science fiction would be the element that fills this area. It is not. With Lightyear, that honor belongs instead to its encompassing theme – love, or more specifically, family. There is no part of this movie that isn’t about family. Of course, Pixar has a long history of playing with humanity’s heartstrings, but something about the way it’s handled in this project feels different. It’s not showy, or too blunt. Here, it’s earnest, kind, and raw. It takes a movie about a man who prefers solitude, in the cold recesses of space, and injects it with a warmth that must be experienced to be believed. This is what makes Lightyear such a triumph. For all the amazing sequences and pulse-pounding action, all eleven herbs and spices, it’s the tear-inducing moments of tenderness that really bring the whole meal home.

Obviously, none of that magic could be accomplished without an incredibly talented cast. These fine folks act as the cheese that binds meat and bread together. They add to the warmth of the dish, diversify it’s texture, and make the sandwich believable as a cohesive unit. It’s their performances, and understanding of the project and their characters, that allow for everything around them to fall deliciously into place. First and foremost, Chris Evans is the perfect Buzz Lightyear. All the gravitas of a galactic Space Ranger, with delivery set to match his grandiose surroundings, and every bit of the hidden emotion needed to bring him back down to Earth. Uzo Aduba and Keke Palmer are similarly impressive, playing original characters who are arguably as likable and central to the plot as Lightyear is himself.

Taika Waititi and his fellow supporting cast, Dale Soules and Peter Sohn, are included in the cheese analogy, but also factor into this next bit as well. On top of the cheese, and the last thing before the aforementioned condiment, are the vegetables. On a sandwich, the lettuce and tomatoes are there to add some crunch and some health to your lunch. So, where do they fall in terms of film? Well, it’s been said for decades that laughter is the best medicine, and therefore, it must also be the healthiest part of Lightyear. What this means is the movie is seriously funny, and Waititi, Soules, and Sohn are a big part of why. In fact, Sohn‘s Sox, a robot cat companion who accompanies Buzz throughout the film, may very well become the next sidekick sensation. If laughter is good for you, then Sox is likely a cure-all.

With that, the sandwich is complete. A specialty meal, available for the whole family where tickets are sold, on June 17th. Lightyear is a worthy addition to Disney’s ever-growing vault, and an unexpected gem from the Toy Story treasure chest. It’s hard to imagine audiences not loving this upon release, and with any luck, it may even spawn an entirely new franchise for Pixar, and Chef MacLane, to continue playing with.

  • ‘Loki’ Season 2 Production Kicks Off With Set Photo

‘Loki’ Season 2 Production Kicks Off With Set Photo

It looks like the first of hopefully many second seasons of any Marvel Studios Disney+ show has finally started production. Cinematographer Isaac Bauman took to his personal Instagram account to share that they have started production on the second season of Loki (as shared by Twitter user @enchantcs due to Bauman deleting the post). He shared the first look from the set which doesn’t reveal too much but does tease with the sentence “Just the beginning.”

    https://twitter.com/enchantcrs/status/1536356800899035137

As Michael Waldron went on to continue his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Eric Martin is taking over as Loki‘s head writer. It’s unclear how they will continue the franchise and if the second season may be a bit removed from what came before. We know that the Time Variance Authority will make its return, but with a new creative team on board, they may make some changes to make the season stand out from the previous one.

Even director Kate Herron has moved on from the project to tackle new ventures with Moon Knight directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead taking on the duties. So, it’ll be interesting to see just how they continue the look and feel from the previous season while still adding their own twist moving the franchise forward.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ From Page to Screen: Episode 1

‘Ms. Marvel’ From Page to Screen: Episode 1

Ms. Marvel has finally premiered its first episode, which means it is time for another round of our From Page to Screen feature. Previously, we compared the comics to their live-action counterparts for each episode of Hawkeye and Moon Knight. Now, it is Ms. Marvel’s turn. Despite making headlines for significantly changing Kamala’s powers and origins for live-action series, Episode 1 has revealed that the show may be much more comics accurate than some would have guessed. Here, we look at how the first episode adapted the moment Kamala discovered she had powers from the comics.

    The Comics

Kamala’s power discovery or power activation moment comes across the first two issues of Ms. Marvel (2014). In Ms. Marvel #1, Kamala is exposed to Terrigen mist from the Terrigen Bomb as she is leaving a party that her parents would not have allowed her to be at. After being exposed, she has a vision of some Avengers, including her hero Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. After breaking out of her cocoon, she discovers she looks like Carol Danvers in her old Ms. Marvel costume.

    Ms. Marvel #1 (2014)

Ms. Marvel #2 reveals the rest of the story. While wandering around after being exposed to the mist, Kamala realizes she has the ability to shapeshift and stretch and elongate parts of her body. She witnesses Zoe Zimmer fall into the water and not come back up. She rushes in—as Carol Danvers Ms. Marvel—to save her. She scoops Zoe out of the water with a giant and elongated arm and hand.

    Ms. Marvel #2 (2014)

There are people around who take photos and videos of “Ms. Marvel” saving Zoe, which leads people in Jersey City to think that Carol Danvers was around and saving the day in her old costume. Kamala tries to sneak back into her room late, but she is caught by her family.

    What They Kept

Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel Episode 1

Despite the MCU’s Kamala seemingly having a very different origin in terms of her powers, this “power discovery” moment for the character is, perhaps surprisingly, notably comics accurate. While AvengerCon is certainly no traditional high school party, Kamala’s mom calls it a “party” when she forbids her from going.

At the “party”, Kamala’s powers get activated, but the differences in that aspect are discussed more below. In any event, she still has what appears to be a vision (or something vision-like) as they are awakened. Even more, she ultimately uses her newfound powers to save Zoe from danger. The moment she breaks Zoe’s fall from the giant replica Mjolnir, her powers create a light construct that looks like a giant extended arm and fist in a clear homage to the comics.

People at AvengersCon took photos and videos of Kamala saving Zoe which go on to make Kamala go viral. Her identity is not known and all that is known about her is that she was dressed as Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers. Afterward, Kamala tries to sneak back home, but her mom catches her.

    What They Changed

The general narrative structure of Kamala’s power discovery moment is the same, but the MCU of course made significant changes. Obviously, the setting of AvengerCon is different, although this is likely to give Kamala a reason for looking like Captain Marvel when she first acts as a hero. Similarly, in Ms. Marvel Kamala is merely dressed like Captain Marvel rather than actually shapeshifting into Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel. In that way, there is no confusion as to the fact that Kamala is not Carol, but she is still sort of “stuck” with that costume and association after getting attention for saving Zoe. Of course, she does not dress like comics Ms. Marvel because the MCU never had that mantle, though Zoe’s cosplay with that classic costume is another homage to the comics.

Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel Episode 1
Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel Episode 1

The reason Kamala’s moment comes at a time when she happened to be dressed as Captain Marvel is a product of the changes Marvel Studios made to her powers. In live-action, she is not exposed to Terrigen mist and does not appear to be Inhuman, but instead, the bangle is what appears to awaken her abilities. Her “vision” is not of the Avengers but remains a mystery. Instead of having stretchy, embiggening, or shapeshifting powers, she appears to be able to create energy or light constructs that are crystal-like and breakable. She uses them to save Zoe, although her lack of control of her powers is what caused the danger in the first place.

    Ms. Marvel #1 (2014)

We will keep analyzing how the comics-inspired Ms. Marvel as the series continues. The first episode is now streaming on Disney+.

  • Taking a Look Back at How ‘The Batman’ Reinvented The Riddler

Taking a Look Back at How ‘The Batman’ Reinvented The Riddler

Batman has possibly one of the best rogues galleries in comic book history, featuring characters like the Joker, Poison Ivy, Penguin, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Bane, and, of course, the Riddler. Many of these villains have been adapted to live-action, and some even got the special treatment on multiple occasions; especially the Joker. There often has been a criticism that the redundancy is dragging down the potential of

Matt Reeves may have taken that to heart when he began developing his take on the Batman mythos. Riddler is a character that has seen a few adaptions, which include the 1966 Batman series with Frank Gorshin, Batman Forever with Jim Carrey, and Gotham with Cory Michael Smith. The Batman, however, features a Riddler that is a vast departure from those who came before with Paul Dano playing a sadistic and ominous version that at times felt like he was an actor on a horror movie who showed up on the wrong set.

One of the very first things you learn to understand about this Riddler is the horror film angle of the reinvention. We first see the character when the light from the television illuminates the figure in the shadows, reminiscent of Michael Meyers from the Halloween franchise. After that Riddler devolves into a Saw-inspired agent of chaos, who uses intricate devices like a rat maze mask and a bomb collar to torture his victims.

The most notable inspiration here is that this Riddler seems to be inspired by the Zodiac Killer, the notorious serial killer that terrorized the United States in the late 60s. He is sporting an extreme cold weather mask as well as a German military parka with simple question mark symbols painted onto it. At the scenes of his crimes leaving behind ciphers for the police and Batman to communicate with them. Along with the greeting cards left behind, the real-life Zodiac was known to have done something similar with ciphers that were sent to the press so they’d print his messages for the country to read.

This Riddler believes in Batman’s crusade of vengeance and is, ironically, inspired by him. Riddler doesn’t see him and Batman as foes, he sees them as partners. They are two sides of the same coin that Batman doesn’t realize until it’s too late. He thinks he’s doing the hard part of the job, the line Batman won’t cross to truly cleanse the city of its corruption and bring vengeance onto those who’d taken part in the city’s criminal underworld. The little cards left behind at the scenes of the riddled murder were not meant to be hints, but progress updates that Edward Nashton leaves behind so that he can fill Batman in on how the plan is going. Riddler believes this Batman would be able to catch on quicker and be safe within Arkham as the city is cleansed of its sins.
