REPORT: ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ May Introduce Aquaman’s Child

We just recently got some teases on what the future of the DCEU has in store, which included a brief tease of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. While we still know rather little about the project, a new report by The Direct may hint that Jason Momoa‘s Arthur Curry and Amber Heard‘s Mera may have an addition in the upcoming film. While they couldn’t share any details, they have heard that the film will include their child.

It’s not the first time they had a child, as we were introduced to Arthur Curry Jr. some time ago. Yet, there was also the rather dark Aquaman: Death of a Prince storyline, whose title already hints at the rather dark turn for a storyline of the 1970s. It’s not clear if James Wan might be building up an adaptation of that storyline, or if they are potentially exploring a new take on Aqualad.

We do know that the character is getting an HBO Max adaptation, but that will explore a storyline inspired by a graphic novel. So, we’ll see how exactly their child might be connected to the story. The confirmed return of Black Manta doesn’t bode well given the child’s comic history. Perhaps their kid gets abducted and brought to the Lost Kingdom in the title, which sets up the potential storyline and why they are unleashed upon the world. For now, it’s just speculation but that’s the fun of it all.

  • Blake Lively to Make Her Directorial Debut Adapting Brian Lee O’Malley’s ‘Seconds’

Blake Lively to Make Her Directorial Debut Adapting Brian Lee O’Malley’s ‘Seconds’

Blake Lively is set to step behind the camera in her latest role as director. The Hollywood Reporter announced on Friday that Lively will helm the adaptation of Seconds for Searchlight. Seconds is based on the graphic novel of the same name from creator Bryan Lee O’Malley.

It tells the story of a girl named Katie Clay who finds herself with the power to try to fix her past mistakes by writing them down in a notebook and taking a mushroom before going to sleep. As expected, however, Clay soon finds herself obsessed with trying to correct every little mistake and soon finds she’ll have to face the consequences for ignoring the rules.

O’Malley, of course, is best known for his work on Scott Pilgrim which received a live-action adaptation from Edgar Wright. Despite stumbling at the box office, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has quickly become a cult favorite. This time around, while Lively will direct Seconds, she’ll be doing do from a script penned by Wright.

This marks Lively’s first film directing gig after she directed a music video for Taylor Swift last year with “I Bet You Think About Me.” The former Gossip Girl star has seen her star on the rise in recent years thanks to projects like The Shallows and The Rhythm Section.

As of this writing, Seconds does not yet have a release date.

  • ‘The Marvels’ and ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’ Swap Release Dates

‘The Marvels’ and ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’ Swap Release Dates

Two of Marvel Studios’ 2023 films have swapped dates. Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels was previously dated for release in February 2023, and will now release in July 2023. While the third film in the Ant-Man series, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania which was previously set to release in July 2023 has moved up to February 2023.

Deadline reported that both films are moving along well but that the Paul Rudd film was a little further along in the process. Both films started filming last Summer in London, and are equally set to continue stories on a wider stage than the films before them. With Quantumania potentially having connections to Loki Season 2 through Kang, it will be interesting to see where they connect in the timeline. Similarly, it is expected that Secret Invasion will connect to The Marvels through the Kree-Skrull tensions. The Samuel L. Jackson-led series seems like it may have a more direct connection, where Kang’s variants are separate people. Yet it is unclear exactly when Secret Invasion will take place in relation to The Marvels. Lots still yet to be discovered.

In terms of the productions, it’s great to hear that both films are moving along nicely. Keeping the Marvel Studios dates means fans aren’t really losing anything. The swap of dates means there will be more for fans to discuss and theorize in relation to what happens when. It will be an exciting slate for 2023 for the Marvel Cinematic Universe regardless of the date swaps.

  • The NBA’s Dearly Departed-Denver Nuggets Edition

The NBA’s Dearly Departed-Denver Nuggets Edition

As teams in the NBA Playoffs get eliminated, Murphy’s Multiverse takes a look at their prospects for next season. The Denver Nuggets were just eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in 5 games. What will it take for them to take the next step?

    Notable Free Agents

    • Guard Austin Rivers
    • Center Demarcus Cousins
    • Forward/Center JaMychal Green (player option)

    Projected 2022-2023 Starting Lineup

    • PG Jamal Murray
    • SG Will Barton
    • SF Michael Porter Jr
    • PF Aaron Gordon
    • C Nikola Jokic

The Nuggets will go into next season with the likely back-to-back MVP in center Nikola Jokic. Most importantly they will have a healthy Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. The goal should be to take the pressure off of Jokic to do everything as he’s had to this past season. Murray’s scoring ability and ball-handling will allow that to happen. MPJ will also take some of the scoring load as well and make this a better offense. Aaron Gordon will slide into an easier situation of being the fourth option as opposed to being the 2nd best player on the team. The question is will it be enough to contend for a title?

Consider this, with what we saw against Golden State it’s fair to ask if this Nuggets defense can be good enough. Against any pick and roll-based offense, Nikola Jokic will be targeted. On the other hand, it’s Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Jordan Poole. That’s a unique set of talent and shooting. You always have to be careful in overreacting to the results as opposed to the process itself. Jamal Murray will be coming off of a torn ACL, and MPJ still has his back issues. You will have to work those guys in carefully and judiciously.

Offensively Nikola Jokic is a system unto himself. If you add the lost talent this year they’ll be fine on that end. Defensively will be a work in progress. Can they find an additional wing that can defend in bench lineups or in crunch time? Or how about MPJ stepping up to be a two-way player. Sometimes the best improvements are in-house, and there’s a path for Denver to be a threat to get to the Finals with the right moves.

All of this takes health, a little bit of luck, and consistency from your best players. The western conference will always be a challenge, but maybe soon enough the Nuggets will strike gold.

  • Why the ‘Moon Knight’ and ‘WandaVision’ Memory Episodes Were So Successful

Why the ‘Moon Knight’ and ‘WandaVision’ Memory Episodes Were So Successful

Moon Knight Episode 5 is arguably one of the best installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s television series. While answering a lot of questions about our protagonists and the nature of the show itself, it managed to feel incredibly unique from its companion episodes. Despite being a standout for the Oscar Isaac-led series, it had quite a few similarities to a popular episode of the first Phase Four installment, WandaVision

If Episode 5 of Moon Knight reminded you of Episode 8 of WandaVision, you are not alone. Both penultimate episodes carried similar themes and structures that ultimately accomplished the same task: rewriting the origin stories of the MCU characters. This article explores the resemblances and differences between the two episodes to highlight Marvel Studios’ fresh technique in introducing or re-introducing heroes.

    Marvel Studios’ ‘WandaVision’

    No Flashbacks

While often referred to as the “flashback” episode, WandaVision Episode 8 does not actually feature any true flashbacks, and the same can be said for Moon Knight’s most recent installment. While there are numerous memories showcased in each, they are in the form of physical spaces that the main characters can, essentially, be a part of. In both episodes, the physical path to the memories was represented by doors–Agatha leads Wanda through a door in her basement, while Marc Spector and Steven Grant travel from room to room in the mentally-projected psych ward.

    Marvel Studios’ ‘Moon Knight’

A slight difference is how the characters exist within these memory spaces. In Moon Knight, Marc and Steven could move around as separate entities from their past selves as highlighted by Steven desperately trying to save the young Marc and his brother from drowning. In WandaVision, however, Wanda generally relives the memories and takes on the form of her past self. For example, rather than watching herself go through the HYDRA experimentation with the mind stone, she inhabited that past body and lived through it once more. Even with that slight variation, the outcome is the same. The memories of the lead characters play out in what feels like real-time, and the fact that our heroes relive these dark moments makes it more potent for the audience.

    Timing

Obviously, both of the episodes at hand were the penultimate installments of the series. Both Moon Knight and WandaVision took a break from their ongoing plots to spend virtually an entire episode in the past. Because they were immediately before the finales, they changed the momentum of the Phase Four entries and paved the way to conclusions that feel drastically different than their beginnings. The memories served to answer many questions that plagued the shows. In both, there existed a sort of “final” or “peak” memory that revealed the most fundamental concepts that had before been mysteries.

In WandaVision, we see the build-up and finally the actual moment that Wanda created Westview. Previously, the viewer did not know when Westview started, and the memory furthermore explained how the Scarlet Witch’s background and then-current grief combined to manifest as the series. While Moon Knight has not yet concluded, it is safe to say that the reveal that Marc is the original personality is a watershed moment for the show. It answered several questions surrounding the existence and relationship between him and Steven, which is the bedrock of the series.

    Spotlight on Mental Health

Neither the MCU nor other comic book franchises are known for their deep character-level emotional explorations or dives into the sphere of mental health. But both Moon Knight Episode 5 and WandaVision Episode 8 put the spotlight on those themes. These two episodes spend a great deal more time on the mental health or emotional aspects of their lead characters than other series or films in the MCU. Because of that, they are noticeably different experiences than what the viewer is used to.

    Marvel Studios’ ‘WandaVision’

Wanda’s depression, trauma, and grief were the underlying cause of Westview and all of the events of the series. While often media is satisfied in suggesting that, for example, a character is grieving deeply, the WandaVision penultimate episode genuinely and successfully elected to show it.

Similarly, Episode 5 of Moon Knight put the spotlight on Marc’s inner struggles. While deep trauma is unrooted like in WandaVision, the presence of and respect given to the character’s dissociative identity disorder leads the series to explore a much more concrete and narrow area of mental health. Still, Marc is developed as a well-rounded character with emotional and psychological turmoil beyond it.

    Marvel Studios’ ‘Moon Knight’

    New Origins

    Marvel Studios’ ‘WandaVision’

While the emotional penultimate episodes certainly add fresh and enriching experiences to their respective series and the MCU at large, they both appear to do something interesting for their titular heroes. We know that WandaVision’s finale acted as a sort of renewed origin story for the Scarlet Witch in the cinematic universe. There, Wanda had been introduced as a character years before and her series served to re-establish the hero and her mantle. Moon Knight, in contrast, was introduced in the current series. While Moon Knight has less to rework, it is likely building up to establish the MCU’s own unique take on the character’s origin. His classic comics origin was very briefly shown in Episode 5, and it seems as though the show is eager to establish Moon Knight in a way unique from his history and expectations. The penultimate episode is almost certainly laying the foundations for the superhero’s true MCU-specific origin story to be fully revealed in the Moon Knight finale.

The first five episodes of Moon Knight are now streaming on Disney+, while the entire series of WandaVision is currently available on the streamer.

  • REPORT: America Chavez’s Mothers Have Been Cast in ‘Multiverse of Madness’

REPORT: America Chavez’s Mothers Have Been Cast in ‘Multiverse of Madness’

As Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness approaches, the secretive film has been dropping more and more information. Even with the rumored high-profile cameos on fans’ minds, one highly-anticipated character already known is Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez. The young hero’s ability to make portals to alternate universes will surely come in handy in the multiversal sequel.

Still, the character also marks major milestones for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as America’s Latinx and LGBTQ+ comics background will make its way into the live-action film. In the comics, her traditional origin story is that she used her dimension-hopping powers to travel from a universe known as the Utopian Parallel after her mothers gave their lives to save that universe. Multiverse of Madness has made headlines after some countries banned the film and others asked Disney to remove LGBTQ+ references from the film.

While we knew America’s mothers would be referenced, it looks like we now know that the two have been cast. According to One Take News, actresses Ruther Livier and Chess Lopez played the role of America’s mothers in the Doctor Strange sequel. While the scope of their roles is not yet known, it seems likely that they may be relatively small. Still, the fact that the roles have been filled does indicate that we will likely see a significant part of the young hero’s past.

Livier has appeared in 90210 and has done a lot of voice work, particularly in video games such as Sly 3Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Dead Rising 3. Lopez seems to be relatively new to the entertainment scene, having appeared in a few short films.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness his theaters on May 6, 2022.

  • REVIEW: ‘Crush’ on Hulu is a Delightful Young Adult Film

REVIEW: ‘Crush’ on Hulu is a Delightful Young Adult Film

Every so often, there comes a young adult film that leaves its mark as a delightful coming-of-age story. We’ve seen this with Pretty in Pink and most recently Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. It’s usually because they contain a certain level of authenticity to them; they manage to be heartfelt while maintaining a raw level of honesty. Crush is one of those films.

Like Love, Simon before it, Crush is a long overdue young adult dramedy that tells the story of Paige, a socially awkward artist, forced to join her high school’s track team to avoid suspension. If it sounds ridiculous, that’s because the concept is ridiculous, and yet it works. Crush manages to be charming, funny, heartbreaking, and honest. The best thing about Crush is that it feels like a film that’ll find a long life for movie fans because it is the type of film young audiences have needed.

Rowan Blanchard and Auli’i Cravalho, who are both members of the LGBTQ+ community, star in this delightful rom-com as Paige and AJ, respectively. Paige is an out and proud lesbian, while AJ is the mysterious bisexual twin sister of Gabby, Paige’s longtime crush. They’ve barely interacted, but soon find themselves thrown together to train, with AJ being instructed to ready Paige for track. What ensues is a chaotic story about first loves and heartache. Both actors are great in their roles, especially Blanchard, who gives it her all as the socially awkward Paige, but they shine most when they share the screen together.

And while the young cast steals the film, it’s hard not to highlight the performances of Megan Mullally, Aasif Mandvi, and Michelle Buteau. The always fantastic Mullally plays an incredibly supportive mother to Blanchard’s Paige. She’s a woman who believes sex positivity is important to teach and has always accepted her daughter for who she is – although sometimes she can be a bit too supportive. While Mandvi is the track coach, who nearly regrets putting Paige on the team until he meets her mom. Every interaction between Mullally and Mandvi is absurdly wonderful, but the best adult performance belongs to Buteau. She has limited screen time, but Buteau delivers some of the best lines throughout the film.

Is Crush awards worthy? No, not at all. Does it deserve its spot at the table with films like Pretty in Pink and Love, Simon? Absolutely. Crush is a darling young adult film that pulls at the heartstrings for all the right reasons.

If you need another reason to give Crush a chance: Natasha Lyonne, who starred in the classic But I’m a Cheerleader and currently stars in Netflix’s Russian Doll, is one of the producers on this film.

  • CONFIRMED: ‘Reservation Dogs’ Actor Devery Jacobs Joins ‘Echo’

CONFIRMED: ‘Reservation Dogs’ Actor Devery Jacobs Joins ‘Echo’

Production on one of the next Marvel Studios series for Disney+, Echo, has already kicked as confirmed by star Alaqua Cox via Instagram. In the post where she confirmed the production start, she revealed that star of Reservation Dogs, Devery Jacobs, had sent her flowers wishing her luck on the first day and telling her she would “see her soon.” This led to us speculating that Jacobs could be playing a role in Echo and it seems that turned out to be true.

Deadline has confirmed that Jacobs has indeed joined the upcoming Disney+ original series focusing on Maya Lopez. Although her role remains unknown, the trade believes that Jacobs could be playing the character of Julie, which we speculated in our Connecting Imaginary Dots piece as Jacobs matched the description of the character quite well.

This is the second casting for the series, with Jacobs joining both Cox and the previously announced Graham Greene in an undisclosed role. The series is also rumored to feature the return of Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, which will see the two reunited following Daredevil season 3’s cancellation.

It was announced back in March of last year, months before Cox made her debut as Echo that the deaf, Native American hero would be returning in her very own solo series. Cox made her debut as the character in Hawkeye, which premiered late last year and saw the character working alongside Wilson Fisk, before turning on him and leaving town.

Echo is currently in production and has no set release date.

  • RUMOR: ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ May Include an ‘Eternals’ Reference

RUMOR: ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ May Include an ‘Eternals’ Reference

It looks like James Gunn may still be busy filming the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. While he shared a wrap gift with only a few more days to go on production, as he is working on both the special and Vol. 3, it was unclear what exactly is being filmed at the time. Perhaps a new rumor not only hints at what they are working on but even includes a great little tie-in to the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to The Hashtag Show’s Hunter Bolding, he shared a tweet that they are currently filming something on Hollywood Blvd. While he can’t confirm which production it is, the Christmas decorations seem to hint that it is in fact the Guardians special. The biggest reveal is that it seems there are various posters of Kingo at the location. We last saw Kumail Nanjiani‘s character in 2021’s Eternals. He’s a Bollywood star and it’s a fun Easter egg to include if they are filming at the Chinese Theater.

Twitter user @PokeDan4 has shared a video from the set that confirms they are in fact filming at the Chinese Theater. The only thing is that it’s hard to make out any posters featuring Kingo.

Of course, there are no details on what poster it might be but it’ll be something fun to find for those keeping an eye out. It does also open up the question if we’ll see the return of Nathan Fillion, who was cast as Simon Williams but his cameo was cut from the film. So, we’ll see if he might get a second chance to pay tribute to what almost was.

    Updated 4/29/22:

A new video has surfaced giving us a clear look at a poster featuring Kumail Nanjiani‘s Kingo!

‘Hunger Games’ Prequel ‘The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes’ Hitting Theaters Next Year

Ever since the Hunger Games films came to an end, Lionsgate has been vocal about wanting to return to the franchise. So, it isn’t entirely surprising that the studio announced The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is coming to the big screen.

During Lionsgate’s presentation at CinemaCon on Thursday, the studio revealed the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is headed to the big screen on Nov. 17, 2023.
