  • Vincent D’Onofrio Describes “The Game” Behind Marvel Studios’ Secrets

Vincent D’Onofrio Describes “The Game” Behind Marvel Studios’ Secrets

Marvel Studios loves their secrets. Whether it’s casting reveals, plot details, or even the episode count of a streaming series, the studio works hard to keep things undercover. For Hawkeye, that meant trying to keep the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin a secret, something that was no small task.

In a recent interview with Marvel News Desk, D’Onofrio was asked about working with the famously secretive studio:

In the end I find it hard to believe that, the fans that I come across are intelligent people and I find it hard to believe that they don’t know its a game. And that the game evokes excitement and sometimes provokes excitement, and so I think it’s a fun game to play. And yes, sometimes its weird because in the moment, it gets bizarre, but you know the best thing about that situation from the actor’s point of view, I’ll say, is that I really don’t know anything. I literally don’t, you know, and at this point I would rather not, because its an uncomfortable position to be in.

    Vincent D’Onofrio

D’Onofrio quickly clarified that while it is bizarre and uncomfortable for the actor to have to keep so many secrets while fans wildly speculate, it is still enjoyable:

You know even when I said its an uncomfortable position to be in, just as I said that, the first thing comes to my mind is: “but it’s kind of fun. The game is kind of fun”

    Vincent D’Onofrio

Keeping a return such as Wilson Fisk quiet definitely couldn’t have been easy, especially for D’Onofrio who loves the character so much, but it was sure worth the wait. Now let the games begin again people wonder just where Kingpin will show up next.

  • UPDATE: ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Tessa Thompson Talks Valkyrie’s Comic Powers

UPDATE: ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Tessa Thompson Talks Valkyrie’s Comic Powers

UPDATE: It turns out that the powers Tessa Thompson was describing in her interview with W Magazine weren’t for the Thor: Love and Thunder version of her character, but rather the comics. In an Instagram story, she offers some insight into what she was discussing in the interview and simply shares her excitement of the character’s comic abilities and backstory.

In talking about Valkyrie to W Mag, I was talking generally about powers that are canon and that I loved in reading the comics and not Thor: Love and Thunder. I shan’t be a home for spoilers.

There are quite a few exciting projects heading our way in 2022. Of course, all eyes are on May’s release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as it’ll continue what was set up in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Yet, Thor: Love and Thunder have been slowly teasing the new designs of Taika Waititi‘s next MCU entry which promise an even crazier fourth entry in the franchise. It’ll also see the return of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie who’ll have a major role in the story. In a new interview with WMagazine, she reveals that her character might have a new and very powerful ability in the film:

She has weird skills, to be honest. She can sense when someone is close to death, and she takes them into Valhalla, which is essentially the afterlife. She can revive people. But when she revives people, sometimes she ends up in their body. It’s a weird thing. It can be quite erotic. And then she has superhuman strength and is essentially God.

    Tessa Thompson

That’s a curious ability that hasn’t truly been hinted at in Thor: Ragnarok. It’s an ability that fits what the Valkyries do in Norse mythology, but this ability might also be our first hint that they are staying true to Jane Foster’s transformation into the Mighty Thor. In the comics, she is fighting cancer before she gains the abilities.

So, Valkyrie might be the one to figure out her real identity – if it’s a secret, to begin with – and connect the dots. Her being able to revive someone does make you wonder if someone might end up dying in the film only for her to bring them back. It opens some interesting questions about the upcoming fourth entry of the Thor franchise.

  • ‘What If…?’s Composer Laura Karpman Joins ‘The Marvels’

‘What If…?’s Composer Laura Karpman Joins ‘The Marvels’

It looks like The Marvels has found its composer in Marvel Studios veteran Laura Karpman, who has previously worked on What If..? and is also well-known for her work on the Lovecraft Country HBO seires. She’s the second female composer for one of their films following the first Captain Marvel film’s Pinar Torprak, who sadly isn’t returning the project. Yet, as the franchise is moving away from its singular focus on Carol Danvers, it makes sense to give it a new audio identity. Karpman shared her excitement for joining the project:

I am thrilled to be going on this wild adventure with Nia DaCosta and Carol Danvers and am really looking forward to the collaboration.

    Laura Karpman

We still don’t know a lot about the sequel’s storyline, especially how it might tie into Secret Invasion on Disney+. Either they’ll explore the Skrull invasion that leads into the series, or they could focus on the Kree-Skrull War instead that becomes a catalyst for that storyline. WandaVision‘s Megan McDonnell wrote the screenplay, which is a promising hint at a great twist as the story sees Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau join to fight a common threat.

  • Corey Johnson, Ethan Kai, and Rebecca Front Join Leslie Grace’s ‘Batgirl’

Corey Johnson, Ethan Kai, and Rebecca Front Join Leslie Grace’s ‘Batgirl’

The HBO Max film Batgirl has just recently started production in Glasglow, as we’ve already gotten a few glimpses from the Easter egg-filled set of the production. Leslie Grace has also already been sighted on the film’s set and as more actors may make get sighted, more castings have found their way online. So far, we only know about Brendan Fraser, J.K. Simmons, and Michael Keaton joining the project. Now, Deadline has shared a new trio of actors that will have a role in the project.

Rebecca Front, Corey Johnson, and Ethan Kai have officially joined the HBO Max film. Front recently appeared in Ryan Reynolds‘ film Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. Kai has appeared on the British soap opera Emmerdale, but also was featured on the popular Killing Eve series. • Vincent D’Onofrio Admits Uncertainty Over Netflix Canon

Vincent D’Onofrio Admits Uncertainty Over Netflix Canon

Back in 2018, we witnessed half of the Marvel Cinematic Universe blipped out of existence. Even today we’re still learning just who survived and who got dusted. Recently in Hawkeye, we learned that Yelena Belova, sister of Natasha Romanoff, was a victim of the blip. One character from that show whose fate during the blip remains a mystery is Wilson Fisk.

Vincent D’Onofrio recently sat down with the folks over at Marvel News Desk, who asked the actor if he’d played this version of Kingpin as if he blipped or hadn’t.

Well, I don’t think I can talk about it because I don’t really know. I can only go by what I think and how I played it but I don’t want to put it out there because then it will become canon. I never had that discussion with anybody so just because of what I had to do in the story, I had to think about it a certain way for me to be able to understand my sort of history up until that point. Hopefully I’ll get another stab at Fisk and it’ll come out another way.

Contrary to what people initially thought, it now seems that D’Onofrio was never really given any information on the canonicity of Fisk’s previous appearance in the Netflix shows. The man certainly reserves the right to portray the character such – with canonicity in mind – but until the story explicitly states it, the debate continues to be in flux. The Fisk we met in Hawkeye was a bit different than the one we were quite used to on Daredevil, so whether it’s a post-blip Fisk or even a soft rebooted one remains to be seen.

  • Vincent D’Onofrio Currently Not Interested in Directing an MCU Project

Vincent D’Onofrio Currently Not Interested in Directing an MCU Project

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is always on the lookout for talented directors to helm one of their future projects, and recently many prominent actors in Hollywood have been hopping behind the camera to either write, produce, or even direct. While none of the on-screen talent at Marvel Studios has made the jump to directing just yet, never say never. Well, maybe with the exception of Vincent D’Onofrio.

The Kingpin actor joined the fine folks at Marvel News Desk for an episode, where they got a chance to ask him about his recent return as Wilson Fisk on Disney+ and the long history of the Netflix series, Daredevil. At one point, D’Onofrio was asked if he’d ever considered possibly directing a project for Marvel Studios, and he offered a very straightforward take on why he currently has no interest.

I don’t think so. Nah, I don’t think so. I know, Ive gotten to know directors and DP’s that are working for Marvel a lot these days and I think that they’re really and I think everybodies just doing a great job, and you know I really just, when it comes to that kind of stuff, I really its like I wouldn’t direct and episode in The Godfather of Harlem, i never tried to direct in Law and Order or any series that I’ve done. The only way that I would ever do that is if I was one of the developers and producers from the get-go of a project.

    Vincent D’Onofrio

The actor is no stranger to the role, as he was the writer and director for 2010s Don’t Go in the Woods and recently directed 2019’s Sheriff Romero. Of course, he does point out that he isn’t interested in a project if he wasn’t part of its initial planning stage. So, it opens up the window for them to eventually find a project where he’d join as a producer that might persuade him to take on a directing role after all. For now, Marvel fans will just get to enjoy his onscreen work as Wilson Fisk.

  • Netflix Canceled ‘Daredevil’ Because of Disney+, Says Vincent D’Onofrio

Netflix Canceled ‘Daredevil’ Because of Disney+, Says Vincent D’Onofrio

Some would say that Netflix was where Marvel Television thrived. With shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Punisher, they really took the cake when it came to adapting the street-level fare. However, in 2018, each of the Marvel series on Netflix was canceled. Perhaps the cancellation that stung the most was Daredevil, the beloved series that had three seasons and garnered universal praise for its adaption of classic marvel storylines and characters.

Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio recently stopped by the Marvel News Desk podcast and shared his firsthand experience and reaction to the cancellation.

I don’t think any of us were okay. I think that we were like, “Oh okay, we had a hit show and now it’s gone.” You know, at the same time the group #SaveDaredevil started to rise, we started to learn the reasons why that happened and so we understood what Marvel was doing because Disney+ coming out.

D’Onofrio follow up his initial reactions to the cancellation of Daredevil with how they all began to understand the why and how the series was canceled.

You know when you’re in this business a long time like we have all been, it kind of made sense business-wise. What didn’t make sense to us was why we wouldn’t continue that show or the idea of how that worked and how well it worked. Conceptually, I think we were disappointed but I think we all understood what was going on and it was sort of was inevitable. In this business you learn to accept things because you know its a business in the end and there’s nothing you can really do about it.

While we may not see the Daredevil series live on again, it’s good to know the characters still have a chance as both D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox have reprised their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

  • REVIEW: ‘Peacemaker’ Episodes 1-3

    REVIEW: ‘Peacemaker’ Episodes 1-3

Peacemaker’s comedic tone and its take-nothing-serious attitude are immediately in full force at the beginning of its premiere episode, and the series’ amazing opening credits promise that that will underlie the entire show. With that, it is successful, and it is sure to please a wide-ranging audience with those elements alone. Still, the first three episodes of Peacemaker left some to be desired with a sometimes-dragging pace. The series mostly makes up for it with its characters and the excitement and pace pick up as the series progresses.

Where Peacemaker excels most is its desire and fearlessness to allow itself to be the joke rather than just making jokes. In The Suicide Squad, that is essentially what the character of Peacemaker brings to the table, though with a bit more grit than the series is so far generating. Peacemaker is driven by general incompetence, and the series feels somewhat like it exists in some bootleg underbelly of a superhero universe. A universe where generally ordinary but demented people dress up in colorful costumes and casually assimilate into society. From what Peacemaker shows, there is nothing flashy or elegant about the lives of these superheroes—the titular hero lives in a cluttered mobile home—and it adds to the feeling that the series takes place in a reality closer to our own.

The one thing that Peacemaker nailed before it even began was John Cena’s casting. It’s hard to put a finger on it, but there’s something about him and his performance that is Peacemaker and feels effortlessly so. Cena allows himself to inhabit a character that is the butt of the joke but also portrays genuine bravado yet cluelessness at the same time. Peacemaker does not spend time trying to convince anyone that the titular character is some worthy hero, and the series even attacks the character for being racist within the first few minutes. The character also encapsulates the series’ intended tone, so even if other elements aren’t matching it, Cena’s Peacemaker rightfully anchors it all to keep it from losing its heart.

While there is some controversy over the direction the series decided to take Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante, the character is possibly the best part of Peacemaker so far. While his scenes were sparing over the first couple of episodes, his character is being consistently built into the foundation of the series. His flamboyant, upbeat personality that overlaps with a clearly deranged and murderous individual is a Peacemaker-level character at its finest. Cena’s Peacemaker is otherwise surrounded by a bit more serious and grounded characters, so Vigilante’s personality is a strong addition that compliments Peacemaker’s in a way that others cannot.

Still, the supporting cast feels integral to the series to the same degree that Peacemaker does. Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt is often the most serious character of the series but can come across as one-note. Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo is a welcome addition to Peacemaker’s Task Force X that underscores the premise that the team often is not exactly inspiring or competent. Steve Agee’s John Economos mostly seems there to exchange insults with others, and Chukwudi Iwuji is undoubtedly the most formidable and intriguing member but has yet to reveal much about himself. The reluctant team aspect is reminiscent of The Suicide Squad in some senses, but the group’s dynamic has room to evolve and improve. The team plays as (mostly) the level-headed backbone of the Project Butterfly plot, in stark contrast to Peacemaker who ironically is often the most incompetent around. The team, though, is not immune from the series’ desire to make fun of itself and not take things so seriously. As serious as they can be, they also suffer from silly mishaps and poor decision-making skills. Robert Patrick’s Auggie Smith or White Dragon is featured prominently in the first two episodes, and it is made clear that the white supremacist villain will have a substantial role to play other than being the source of Peacemaker’s daddy issues.

However, the series is surprisingly slower than expected. The first episode in particular felt rather mundane and drawn out, serving as a basic primer without much-added excitement. After that, the series picks up with Episode 3 easily being the best and well-paced of the three. Episode 3 is also the first episode where the overarching “Project Butterfly” really comes into play, though the series is still rolling out the details. The effect is a show that is currently more of a mystery than an action-thriller, but there’s every reason to assume that that will shift. For now, though, Peacemaker falls significantly flatter than maybe it intends to. The humor still carries and drives the series, so it is not left without its fun and heart, even in its blander moments.

All in all, Peacemaker is full of plenty of promise. The first three episodes seem to have set up most of the major players and elements of the series, even though most of Project Butterfly remains under wraps. Hopefully, the show can utilize its strong cast and collection of characters to propel the series to greater heights as the story picks up the pace and the action—hopefully—follows suit.

  • Vincent D’Onofrio On Bringing His Approach to Kingpin into ‘Hawkeye’

Vincent D’Onofrio On Bringing His Approach to Kingpin into ‘Hawkeye’

In the opening moment of Episode 6 of Hawkeye, it was a bit obvious that Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin wasn’t the same one fans had gotten to know over 3 seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil. Over the course of the episode, the different wardrobe and near superhuman resistance to damage continued to lead fans to believe this wasn’t the same old Wilson Fisk. While it still remains to be seen just how this Fisk fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the events of Hawkeye, it’s likely we’ll see him again, giving D’Onofrio more room to grow in the role.

Recently the folks over at Marvel News Desk had the chance to sit down with the Kingpin himself and took the time to ask just how D’Onofrio went about bringing Fisk into the MCU, after all that time in a very different world at Netflix.

I have to say, that from the get-go with my involvement with Marvel, from Jeph Loeb to where we were at Hawkeye, that I’ve had complete freedom the whole time. I’m not sure why I have? I know that my initial coming into Netflix was contingent on whether I thought it was an interesting part for me, because I knew who Kingpin was.

    Vincent D’Onofrio

D’Onofrio went on to describe how he was able to work closely with Marvel Studios’ Trinh Tran and the writers of Hawkeye to transition the character into the MCU:

You know with Hawkeye it was the same thing. I was immediately, you know Trinh had me on the phone immediately, and I was talking to writers and the producers and we were having-every couple of weeks-we were having discussions about script and about changes and about ideas in the way my approach was. And they were happy enough to pass that on to the directors and how I work, and my approach and how I felt about it, and Kevin was very clear that I was going to be able to bring my stuff into the part.

    Vincent D’Onofrio

D’Onofrio has gone on record several times saying that he’s playing Fisk as if he were the same character as the one from the Netflix series. It’s clear from this interview that he truly cares for the character and any future appearances of Kingpin will benefit from his involvement in determining where he goes next.

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Wrapped Production on Reshoots

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Wrapped Production on Reshoots

Some time ago, we learned that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness started another round of additional photography to reshoot some elements of the film. They were described as “extensive” but outside of rumors that it may be to add some more cameos and shoot sequences that weren’t possible due to COVID. There were hints they were nearing an end back in December, but it turns out the reshoots were still ongoing uup until recently.

In a new profile by Deadline they’ve revealed that the reshoots ended this weekend, which means they’ve now fully entered the post-production process. With the film still eyeing its May release, there’s enough time for them to focus on development. Of course, the process isn’t new for Marvel Studios or any production company in the industry nowadays, which directors have praised due to it ensuring they can make necessary tweaks.

It’ll be interesting to see how much Multiverse of Madness added as a result of these reshoots. There were concerns that more cameos could take away from the film’s central storyline, but Spider-Man: No Way Home proved that it is possible to strike a good balance with a central story and crowd-pleasing appearances. Of course with a story that takes place in the multiverse, it would be a shame not to embrace those kinds of shenanigans.
