REVIEW: ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Episode 3 – The Streets of Mos Espa

After spending most of the time with the Tusken Raiders in the initial episodes, the third chapter titled “The Streets of Mos Espa” remains mostly focused on the present-day storyline. It feels like the story is starting to pick up the pace, as we find out what other dark secrets the town of Mos Espa has hiding, as well as continue to humanize the man behind the helmet, as Boba Fett remains a much kinder character than one might initially expect. Can the former bounty hunter finally set his foot as ruler of Tatooine?

The core of this episode continues to highlight Fett’s character. While he is now the Daimyo, he stays true to his beliefs. These are strongly reinforced by the Bacta flashbacks, and this episode feels like the first time it is truly coming together. He’s shown quite a lot of mercy, which you wouldn’t expect from a man who worked as a bounty hunter. If it weren’t for the Raiders, we might have a very different man leading this show and it knows that. That development makes the poignant moment of this week’s episode hit even harder, as reality sadly is much harsher. In a way, it parallels what he’s trying to accomplish with his more kind take on ruling, as when violence was used it only ended in violence in his past.

Disney+’s latest Star Wars series offers many dramatic moments, but as highlighted in last week’s episode is also not ashamed of having some fun. The fact that he faced off against a literal desert alien biker gang in the last episode and the arrival of Tatooine’s youth with their shiny rides feels somehow bizarre yet fitting for the franchise. It’s that combination of fun world-building based on familiar elements that always made this franchise stand out among its intergalactic peers.

One of my favorite moments in this episode is when Krrsantan just dragged Fett out of his Bacta tank. Right after a dramatic revelation on Fett’s past before he regained his armor, we are ripped out of the memory by the newly introduced Wookie, who wipes the floor with our favorite bounty hunter. It was a great moment of tension, as it ripped Fett of all his armor and gimmicks to force his hand. The fact that the only effective weapon he had was the gaffi stick at the time was a nice touch even if he went down a little faster than you’d hope. He does end up getting helped out by his allies and it is the badass Ming-Na Wen‘s Fennec Shand that manages to win.

The action has been great, but its titular character only got a single moment to truly shine and that was part of a flashback. In the modern-day, he seemingly is over-reliant on those around him, which makes me wonder if his continued visit to the Bacta tank is a hint that something is wrong. He might have much deeper scars than we anticipated, which may become a key factor later down the line. Here’s hoping that he gets a moment like in The Mandalorian in the latter half of this series.

The Hutts also make their return this episode, but it seems they have decided to save some money on their budget due to them already leaving the story. A bigger conspiracy is woven, as they were the obvious ones to pin the assassinations on, but this episode may have finally set the stage for the main antagonists, as the present and past are coming together with the Pykes. There might still be more to this story, but it feels like the slow pacing is coming to a payoff soon.

Speaking off, my reviews of earlier episodes might’ve been a bit harsher than need-be, as the show isn’t restricted to forcing a fast-paced action set. It’s what one would expect from a show featuring THE Boba Fett, but the more time I spend with Temuera Morrison, the more I understand what they are doing. He’s a true leading man and gets actual time to shine outside of the mask. His interaction with the incredible cameo by Danny Trejo and a very special gift that I cannot wait to see develop in future episodes were stand-out moments. We get this hint at kindness and giddiness that makes the character stand out even more than the myths we’ve weaved around him in the past. It makes me hope we have many more stories to tell with this incarnation of the character.

  • RUMOR: ‘Batgirl’ May Have Already Cast Its Robin With Potential ‘Nightwing’ Spinoff In Mind

RUMOR: ‘Batgirl’ May Have Already Cast Its Robin With Potential ‘Nightwing’ Spinoff In Mind

The Batgirl news is nonstop these days, as production begins to ramp in Glasgow. The city has been transformed into Gotham City once more for the upcoming HBO Max film. Just recently we saw quite a few interesting details from the set, one specifically featuring a mural depicting not only Batman but also Robin. The character’s future in the DCEU has been a bit questionable, as previous entries in the franchise hinted there was no active Robin. Yet, the multiversal shenanigans from The Flash may change that, as a new rumor has found its way online stating that Dick Grayson will make his debut in Batgirl.

MyTimeToShine, who we have previously reported one hinting at a soft-reboot of the DCEU, has shared that Warner Bros. has already found its choice to take on the role of Robin in the upcoming film. Not only that, but she also hints that Batgirl could possibly set up a Nightwing spinoff, which has been stuck on the back burner in DCEU’s infamous development hell for years.

This tweet also got the attention of KC Walsh, another source who provided quite a few insights in the past, who gave a rather curious response to highlight the statement. So, there might be more to this story.

Back in 2017, it was announced that the director of The Lego Batman Movie, Chris Mckay, would be directing a solo Nightwing film with Bill Dubuque set to write the script for the film. Like many other projects that spawned during the early days of the DCEU, it never went anywhere. The project was one of the few that even had someone attached to direct. Of course, there has not been an official word yet and so we still have to take it with a grain of salt for now.

  • ‘The Book of Boba Fett’s Robert Rodriguez Developing Gender-Swapped ‘Zorro’ Series for The CW

‘The Book of Boba Fett’s Robert Rodriguez Developing Gender-Swapped ‘Zorro’ Series for The CW

It looks like there’s another Zorro reboot on the horizon, only this time the famous vigilante will be hitting the small screen. In addition, the person behind the mask will be a woman. Deadline is reporting that veteran filmmaker Robert Rodriguez will executive produce and write a new series featuring a gender-swapped version of the character for The CW. Rodriguez will be joined in the writer’s room by former Mayans M.C. producer Sean Tretta, who will serve as showrunner. His sister Rebecca Rodriguez will also direct the pilot, after working on TNT’s Snowpiercer.

Zorro is set to follow a young Latinx woman seeking vengeance for her father’s murder, ultimately leading her to join a secret society and adopt the ‘Zorro’ persona. The story comes from the Rodriguez siblings, with Tretta writing the script. This is the second attempt at a female-led Zorro series after NBC had put one into production from Alfredo Barrios Jr. in 2019. Sofia Vergara was at one point attached to the project as a producer but has since dropped out.

This is also not the first time Robert Rodriguez has tried his hand at adapting the character. The Spy Kids director was originally supposed to helm 1998’s popular The Mask of Zorro, and even had a role in casting Antonio Banderas as the lead, but budgetary concerns lead to him being replaced by Martin Campbell before filming began. The CW’s Zorro won’t be the only new take on the legendary outlaw in the next few years, either. Alex Rivera is currently on board to write and direct a film reboot for Sobini Films titled Zorro 2.0, which will reimagine the title character as a young, undocumented hacker.

  • Gal Gadot to Star in a ‘To Catch a Thief’ Remake, ‘Prodigal Son’s Eileen Jones Attached to Write

Gal Gadot to Star in a ‘To Catch a Thief’ Remake, ‘Prodigal Son’s Eileen Jones Attached to Write

Gal Gadot has been quite busy. She ended 2020 with the release of Wonder Woman 1984. Entered 2021 co-starring alongside Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds in Netflix’s original film, Red Notice. Now, the buzz is starting for her next starring role in Death On The Nile. While they are still preparing for Wonder Woman 3, it seems she has decided to add one more thriller to her list of upcoming projects.

Deadline has revealed that she will star and produce a remake of the 1955 thriller To Catch A Thief. The original was directed by the legendary Alfred Hitchcock, and it starred Cary Grant as the titular thief. At the time, the incomparable Grace Kelly was part of the project as his love interest. She is producing the project with her partner Jaron Varsano through their Pilot Wave banner. There is no word who she is playing, but there is a chance she is a gender-swapped version of Grant‘s original character.

That’s not all though, as the critically-acclaimed Prodigal Son writer Eileen Jones has been hired to write the remake. This news comes on the heels of her most recent pitch, Highwayman, which got picked up by New Line. She wrote the project alongside Margot Robbie and will be produced by Christina Hobson. The project seems to be in its early stages. So, we might not get an update for some time as Gadot has quite a few other projects she might prioritize.

  • RUMOR: ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ Release Window May Have Leaked Early

RUMOR: ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ Release Window May Have Leaked Early

While the Wizarding World franchise has slowly been moving away from Hogwarts, as we explore the world surrounding it through the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Yet, many still have the fantasy to be students at Hogwarts and, luckily, a new game heading to PlayStation may offer exactly that titled Hogwarts Legacy. We’re still anxiously awaiting a release date, but it seems it may have leaked early.

Industry Insider Tom Henderson has revealed that there are plans for a new PlayStation State of Play that would feature the Harry Potter spinoff game. It would give us the release window. Yes, not the actual release date but a hint at when we can expect it. It seems that the game is eyeing a release in the third quarter, which would mean a summer release between July to August. WB Games might be trying to give themselves some flexibility in case Omicron leads to more delays.

The concept of an open-world game that lets you explore the many corners of Hogwarts is quite an exciting one for long-time fans. It seems that player customization will let you individualize your experience while also trying to grab the house you always wanted to be part of. We’ll see if WB Games can bring their ambitious project to life and get a closer look in February if this rumor turns out true.

  • James Gunn Jokes He’s Jealous How Much People Love the Holiday Special Script

James Gunn Jokes He’s Jealous How Much People Love the Holiday Special Script

James Gunn may be readying for his HBO Max series, Peacemaker, to debut this week, however, that’s not the only thing keeping him busy. Gunn is also currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel Studios, as well as preparing to film the previously announced Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. While Gunn spent years talking to Kevin Feige about a potential holiday special, having drawn inspiration from Star Wars, he managed to knock out the script in a short amount of time. Gunn admits that while he spent years working on the script for Vol. 3, the holiday special was something he knocked out rather quickly, which is why he’s pretty “jealous” of how much love it is getting.

As it stands, filming on the holiday special has not yet begun, but it appears folks are excited to see it come to life — at some point. During an interview with Collider to tease Peacemaker, Gunn briefly commented on the holiday special. “It’s still upcoming in the shoot. We were supposed to shoot one day in LA, and there’s too much Omicron around, so we couldn’t do it. We’re going to have to fit it in. I haven’t started yet,” Gunn explained. “The holiday special is… I’m almost jealous of it, even though I wrote it because people freak out so much on how much they love the script for the holiday special that I’m almost like, ‘Well, wait. I’ve got this movie here I’ve been working on for two years. You love the holiday special that I literally wrote in a very short amount of time.’ But, it is really funny and really good.”

While little is known regarding the holiday special, Gunn has previously teased it’ll include a character he’s dubbed the “greatest MCU character.” The yet-to-film holiday special is expected to release later this year on Disney+.

  • RUMOR: ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Production Postponed Indefinitely Due to Omicron Concerns

RUMOR: ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Production Postponed Indefinitely Due to Omicron Concerns

There have been growing concerns that the COVID Omicrom variant might hit harder than previous versions, as some countries are preparing for lockdowns. As such, it seems a new report by Bespin Bulletin has revealed that The Mandalorian’s third season production may have halted production. They report that there were no issues on set and no one involved was affected by the virus, but they wanted “to be on the safe side.” Cases have been on the rise, and reports that Star Trek: Picard was affected may have added some concerns.

The production seemed to have started back in September with March being its potential end date. Yet, as it’s now currently halted production, they may focus primarily on post-production work until numbers go down again. There is no word on when they might restart production, as such they’ll have to wait, but it’s a good sign if this is the case that Lucasfilm and everyone involved is prioritizing the production team’s health. We’ll see if this news gets confirmed at some point later down the line.

  • James Gunn Teases a “Different” ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

James Gunn Teases a “Different” ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

Marvel Studios has quite a few exciting projects heading our way, but many are excited to see James Gunn finally get a chance to end his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. While the project has entered production at a later point than initially planned, we still get to see his vision come to life and continue the story of Star-Lord, Rocket, Gamora, Drax, Mantis, and Groot across the MCU’s galaxy. It seems that the third entry may offer something quite unique.

In an interview with Collider, the director revealed that Marvel Studios has already seen some parts of the film and it seems they are quite happy, especially its CEO Kevin Feige. He also praises Chukwudi Iwuji‘s performance, who’ll have a larger role in the upcoming project, as teased by the project.

It’s going great. Chukwudi, who plays Murn in Peacemaker, is one of the main characters in the movie and people are freaking out over how good this guy is. Literally freaking out. I think that I’m really happy. I gave a bunch of scenes to Marvel right before Christmas break. Kevin [Feige] went… They were all really, really, really stoked. But also, it’s not going to be the movie people… It’s different than what people are going to expect. It’s a hard road, but I’m really happy with it so far.

    James Gunn

Some rumors believe that Iwuji might be playing the film’s main antagonist that is very likely the creator of Rocket, the High Evolutionary. He was revealed as part of the cast in a set photo from the production’s first day, and it’s great to see his performance receiving praise. We cannot wait to see what the third entry has to offer and what Gunn means with it being different.

  • ‘Pig’s Michael Sarnoski In Talks to Tackle ‘A Quiet Place’ Spinoff

‘Pig’s Michael Sarnoski In Talks to Tackle ‘A Quiet Place’ Spinoff

There was quite some uproar when Jeff Nichols left A Quiet Place spinoff project, but that hasn’t deterred Paramount Pictures from finding a replacement. It looks like their search has finally come to an end, as hot off of his success with the Nicolas Cage-led film Pig, director Michael Sarnoski is in negotiations to take over the project. It’s still a mystery what the project will be about, as it’s mainly based on an idea from John Krasinski that won’t continue the storyline from the previous two entries.

Currently, Paramount Pictures is hopeful that this new entry in the franchise might expand a new cinematic universe in the vein of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the DC Extended Universe. They also hint that Emily Blunt and Krasinski are set to return, which hints at this storyline potentially acting as a prequel to the events that kicked off the franchise’s main storyline.

It’ll be interesting if they have enough to work with to create an entire universe, especially with the limiting concept that defines the reason it has its name. Though, it would be funny if we start getting spinoffs with different titles that change out the “quiet” in A Quiet Place. With a director in final negotiations, it hopefully means we might get some information in the near future.

  • Simu Liu Shares His Hopes for the Upcoming ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel

Simu Liu Shares His Hopes for the Upcoming ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel

One of 2021’s best surprises was Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. After the film’s financial and critical success, it was given the green light for a sequel with director Destin Daniel Cretton signed on to return. The possibilities for the next entry seem endless, but franchise star Simu Liu already knows what he’d like to see happen when his titular hero returns to the big screen.

At the end of Ten Rings, Shang-Chi finds himself in possession of his father’s iconic weapons, the aforementioned Ten Rings. In a conversation with Complex Canada, Liu stated that he’d love to explore how his character handles this development:

I think just what Shaun decides to do with all this newfound power, you know? It kind of consumed his father, consumed Wenwu. I’m curious as to how someone much younger, much more inexperienced, would fare against the rings. Just this idea of all of a sudden being gifted something that’s so powerful but also so dangerous.

    Simu Liu

As he continued, the actor revealed that he’s also very interested in seeing Shang-Chi interact more with the wider MCU, such as participating in some fun team-ups.

And then the other big question I have is, you know, in what way does Shaun fit in with the rest of the MCU? Who are you going to see? What kind of crazy team-ups? What kinda tie-ins, Easter eggs? I’m just as much in the dark as everyone else, so I don’t know anything, but I’m excited to dive into that process.

    Simu Liu

Liu may get his wish. The last we saw him, Marvel’s signature martial artist was being introduced to the Avengers by the Sorcerer Supreme, Wong. Unfortunately, audiences will likely have to wait until the untitled second Shang-Chi eventually hits theaters to know if any of the leading man’s wishes come true.
