It’s been a turbulent weekend, as people flocked to theaters to witness the film that is Spider-Man: No Way Home. Everyone wanted to see if the rumors were all true and it led to the best opening since the pandemic, as the film has now premiered to $253M across 4,336 theaters in the US. As such, it now has broken many of its earliest expectations at the domestic box office. It beats out Sony’s other Spider-Man spinoff, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, that took the top opening just shy of $100M by a mile and offers some motivation about the box office’s full recovery. Tom Rothman had the following to say on the film’s success:
This weekend’s historic Spider-Man: No Way Home results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve. All of us at Sony Pictures, are deeply grateful to the fabulous talent, both in front of and behind the camera, that produced such a landmark film. Thanks to their brilliant work, this Christmas everyone can enjoy the big screen gift of 2021’s mightiest Super Hero —your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Tom Rothman
The numbers are impressive as they even compete with pre-pandemic releases, as the film is now the eighth to pass the $200M mark in the local box office and has nabbed the third-highest opening weekend of all time. It even doubled Homecoming‘s $117M opening weekend, which saw a slight dip with Far From Home‘s $92M. As it stands, the film has beat out Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s $220M, Jurassic World‘s $208M, as well as fellow Marvel Studios projects Avengers: Infinity War and BlackPanther. It’s an impressive accomplishment and it’ll be interesting to see how word-of-mouth might push the film moving forward.
The latest season of Aggretsuko has arrived with some new looks into the struggle of nine-to-five employees through the eyes of humanoid animals. Our main protagonist, Retsuko, takes a bit of a backseat in this season. The series uses its Hello Kitty-inspire style – as it’s made from the same studio – to still tell a grounded story in the struggle of personal expectations, finding your passions, and trying to make your dreams become a reality. It included heavy themes while embracing the cartoony aspects of its world. Sadly, the fourth season tries to up the ante but doesn’t quite nail the landing.
The core message of this season is built by Haida’s characterization. After Retsuko was assaulted by a stalker, she’s uncertain about going home. It is the first stepping stone for these two to finally build a relationship of some kind, especially after last season’s finale. The creative team for some reason decided to reset his character, as he becomes a bumbling idiot every time Retsuko tries to take any step forward. While I understand that they are highlighting the ramifications of how we act when we are in love with someone that seemed unobtainable, it still drags on.
The reason they reset his character is to explore the topic of “self-doubt” in your private life and as part of a workforce. It’s the strongest aspect of the season and highlights how the cutesy art style doesn’t shy away from real-world issues. Yet, it normally finds a balance in how these characters act and have developed from previous entries. Yet, it feels like they went a few steps too far this time around.
The CEO gets hurt and the ambitious Himoru takes over. He ends up slowly letting older staff members go in an attempt to downsize to secure its future. Ton takes the fall, as he believes in his employees and ends up being given a dead-end job that’ll force him to leave. Of course, he can’t stand it and secretly starts working at a convenience store. He actually gets some great characterization and focuses on trying to keep the illusion alive for his family. It was great. Well, until Retsuko comes into play.
It was her and Fenneko’s ranting about him to the new boss in a drunken stupor that led to his firing, but as everyone tells her to let it go, she refuses to do so. I like it, as it gives her something to do this season and a story arc of making up for her mistakes. Yet, the way she handles it sends such a strange message. After meeting up with her ex, the rich and influential Tadano, she finds out she’s a viral hit. The YouTube channel she started long before she joined the pop idol band has suddenly gained quite a few views. So, her solution is pretty much dropped in her lap and while she invests time to grow it, it doesn’t feel earned in any way.
Especially when Ton becomes quite arrogant after getting hired to run her bookkeeping. It felt like the character didn’t learn a single lesson from his actions, and we just end up where we started. Once we go back to “he’s old and doesn’t know how technology works” jokes, it feels like we just wasted time and Retsuko just fixed her issue through sheer luck. Poor Kabae gets pressured out of her job due to her poor kid getting a fever – though his animations might’ve been the most adorable thing ever – and no one really helped her out. She only returns to the story due to her knowing every inch of the company to uncover Haida’s secret.
Speaking of, it’s time to talk about the story arc I could not fully get behind. Haida lacks self-confidence until Himuro sees the potential in the work he did to streamline how he tackles tasks through programming. Suddenly, he ends up as the department’s director and starts implementing new ways to support his co-workers. Even after they fired people left and right, the story suddenly takes a dark turn. For no real reason but to add drama, Haida becomes an accomplice and fixes the company’s books for the new CEO. We do see him build a bond with the Himuro, especially with them working out together, but it feels like such a heel turn for Haida.
Yes, he has gained some confidence due to the man acknowledging his hard work and it’s a showcase of how easy we are pulled into things once you finally get the feeling you’ve managed a “next step” in your career. Yet, this feels so out-of-character for him to just go along with this. Especially as this plotline is mainly there to put another conflict between him and Restuko. We have an entire heist storyline once she realizes what he is doing. Given the gravitas of this story and Haida’s moral dilemma, it could’ve been handled with more care.
Tadano doesn’t have a big role in this season, but his inclusion has an important role in pushing Haida’s development. He’s Retsuko’s confidant when she becomes a viral sensation – which is odd if you consider she wanted to get away from it after last season – seems convenient. The way it wraps up everything like a clean bow with only one character facing consequences seems rather depressing. Even worse is that it tries to go for a message about happiness that is important, but it also makes it seem it’s okay to give up on your ambitions or dreams. It just didn’t stick the landing after already forcing his character into a darker direction.
The series confirms there will be a fifth season, which may rectify some of the issues I had because they are more open-ended. There are some powerful moments, especially with Tsubone’s brief arc, but it all comes at the cost of one of its core characters. There is a lack of consequences to the actions taken in the story and it seems that no one learns a lesson, which ends up downplaying its stronger moments. It’s a shame that the direction didn’t quite bring everything together like in previous seasons, but it seemed like something was missing, and that includes the songs that used to cap off an episode.
We’ve been covering the One Piece series in development from Netflix for some time now. After they finally confirmed the main cast, we haven’t heard much about the project’s potential production start. The cast was slowly arriving in South Africa, but we were still waiting for any update, especially with the holidays are just around the corner. Manga creator Eiichiro Oda has been heavily involved in the project and included it in his regular announcements.
While promoting the upcoming One Piece Film Red and teasing next year’s 25th anniversary during Jump Festa, we even got a nice surprise for the Western production. Emily Rudd, IñakiGodoy, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar appeared in a new video to tease that production is slowly kicking off.
During the event, Oda also offered an update on what’s to come alongside the next One Piece film. @WSJ_manga was kind enough to share the translation where he highlights the Western production and his excitement for the cast.
…so it was a year full of celebrations. Are you excited about what's coming next? We have a few announcements prepared for the future.
The cast for One Piece's Hollywood Live-Action has been announced too! They're all perfect! They're 5 amazing people!…
It’s curious that the video hasn’t been shared on the official Netflix Twitter channel, but they might have wanted this to be a Jump Festa exclusive announcement. Avatar: The Last Airbender was announced through social media, but we’ll see if they are still in some phase of pre-production. A first look at Mackenyu‘s stunt training found its way online not too long ago, but it’s uncertain if the cast and team are heading home for the holidays. If production is revving up, here’s hoping we get a first look at the cast in their respective costumes as well as a

Every movie has that stand-out character you keep thinking about after the film is over. If the marketing for The King’s Man is any indication, it may be Rhys Ifans‘ Rasputin that takes the cake there.
During a recent interview with the Welsh actor to promote The King’s Man, I was able to ask about his unrecognizable portrayal of the famed Russian mystic. After I mentioned the actor typically played more subdued characters, he seemingly agreed. For Ifans, everything he’s done before is “subdued” when coming those roles to the likes of Rasputin. As he puts it, there’s a certain “Matthew Vaughn-ness” to the character.
I think everything is subdued compared to what I do in this. What was required of me in this movie – I think Rasputin has to be, in this manifestation, in this movie…a weather system. When he arrives, he can’t be ‘Rasputin’ he has to be ‘RASPUTIN’. It has to have that Matthew Vaughn-ness.
Rhys Ifans
Ifans continued, discussing the actual Rasputin’s influence on his performance:
Although, the real Rasputin was very much larger than life. He was referred to as the ‘Mad Monk’. He was impossible to kill. He had a huge physical presence. It was great fun to play. Characters like that lend themselves well to franchises like this where you can bend the rules and magnify moments in time. I had so much fun working on it…It’s as extreme as it gets.
Rhys Ifans
Grigori Rasputin is a renowned historical figure, best known for being a wildly influential holy man in his native country. In the film, he’s one of the many villains going up against Ralph Fiennes and his fellow heroes.
The King’s Man opens nationwide in theaters on Dec. 22nd.
One of the biggest movies in the biggest film franchise of all time makes a lot of money.
Spider-Man: No Way Home was greeted with an enthusiasm from audiences all around the world that we probably haven’t seen since Avengers: Endgame. That led to it surpassing expectations in what regards its domestic debut. The incredible reviews it got, coupled with the passionate word of mouth, seems to hint at its box office tally continued growth at a steady rhythm in the coming weeks.
New characters addedto ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’
726 variants of Mephisto are set to debut on the Doctor Strange sequel that’s set to premiere next year. We’ll get Grumpy Mephisto, Sleepy Mephisto, Dopey, Sneezy, and several more. According to a trade report, the movie will be setting up the Multiverse as the MCU takes a deep dive into the concept, after only tip-toeing through it in the more recent projects.
Spider-M4n is a go
The worst best-kept secret in Hollywood outside of everything regarding Spider-Man: No Way Home has been finally made public. Spider-Man 4 is confirmed to be in active development over at Marvel Studios meaning the web-slinger will continue his cinematic journey alongside, should we say, much more likable, powerful and overall heroic characters. Hopefully, this fourth solo outing, that may or may not evolve into a new trilogy (it depends if fans finally start connecting with such an obnoxious and awkward character), will focus more on a struggling Parker as he leaves his vigilante days behind him and gets a real job for once.
Karate Kid spin-off² goes back to where it all started.
Xolo Maridueña is set to become the superhero his Cobra Kai days have shown he always had the potential to be. His debut in the upcoming Blue Beetle has now moved from being an HBO Max exclusive to a full-fledged theatrical release. Hopefully, this not only hints at a hopeful future in what the COVID-19 pandemic is concerned, with audiences back in theaters but at a worthy final product that’ll justify the push to the big screen where expectations are bound to increase. Now just cast Elisabeth Shue as La Dama.
‘Hawkeye’finale being an hour long screws even more healthy sleeping schedules.
This is a bit of news that will probably anger east-coast fans as next Thursday’s productivity might be at an all-time low. For everybody else, besides being cool that we’ll be having more minutes to enjoy, it seems to hint that Hawkeye might actually resolve most of its storylines. The plot twist will probably be that the show will use those extra minutes to develop a few more unresolved storylines and have the MCU never address them ever again.
Jim Mickle is set to adapt one of the best movies you haven’t watched yet.
There’s this guy working at Marvel Comics who, ever since starting at the company, has written some of the most absurdly awesome storylines ever put to paper this century. From Doctor Strange to the Silver Surfer, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Venom, there’s hardly a character he has touched that didn’t instantly become a must-read series. But before all of this he wrote God Country, over at Image Comics. His name is Donny Cates, and he is working on the adaptation that Legendary is putting together, alongside Jim Mickle. Mickle also adapted the iconic comic series Sweet Tooth for Netflix, a series that didn’t get enough attention as it probably was in the top 5 of comic book adaptations in 2021. Meaning he should be good at his job. So being, God Country is on the right path to become a huge disappointment as it seems to have nowhere to go but down, given the quality of the source material and the talent already attached to it.
The upcoming finale of Hawkeye has everyone’s eyes on it. Not only will it tie up one of Marvel Studios’ most grounded storylines, but also finally reintroduce Wilson Fisk a.k.a. the Kingpin into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Theoretically, he was already confirmed in the last episode, but Vincent D’Onofrio gets to actually showcase his character in the series. We don’t know how true he’ll stay to his performance in Daredevil, but it’s such an exciting prospect and we only have to wait a few more days.
Luckily, to tie us over, Hailee Steinfeld has offered a tease that her character, Kate Bishop, will come into confrontation with the actor. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she talked about what it’s like to act opposite of D’Onofrio and teases the presence he’ll once again bring to the role, which is quite promising.
It’s a very different experience standing underneath Vincent and hearing him. To be in his presence is really something… I’ve been a fan of his for a very long time. It’s always amazing to be a part of something with people that you really admire. I’m excited to see people watch it unfold.
Hailee Steinfeld
We are certainly excited, as many long-time Daredevil fans have been waiting for the character’s grand return. So, not only knowing Kate will confront the character, especially as Steinfeld highlights that “this is somebody that she doesn’t know much about but she’s been warned. She knows everything she needs to know when she hears Clint say ‘this is the guy I’ve been worried about the whole time.’ That right there is enough for her to need to come to her senses and figure out how to handle the situation” So, it’ll be interesting to see just how this turns out.
The Batman will feature the debut of RobertPattinson as the iconic Dark Knight. Fans are dying to see his performance as the character, as his take looks to be drastically different than anything we’ve seen before. The actor has grown tremendously as an actor since his Twilight days with films like The Lighthouse, Tenet, High Life, The King, and Good Time.
Director Matt Reeves recently sat down with Empire Magazine for the 2022 film preview where he dove into what inspired him for this take on Bruce Wayne. the director also shared how Pattinson‘s performance in Benny and Josh Safdie’sGood Time landed him the role of Batman.
In that movie you could really feel his vulnerability and desperation, but you could also feel his power.I thought that was a great mix. He’s also got that Kurt Cobain thing, where he looks like a rock star, but you also feel like he could be a recluse.
Matt Reeves
Reeves casting in the film is something that’s garnered a lot of attention. And his source of inspiration is certainly something that might offer people some insight into what he will bring to the table. Pattinson‘s performance in Good Time is definitely one fan anticipating the upcoming release of The Batman should check, amongst his other projects and roles.
The Batman is currently set to release in theaters on March 4th, 2022 with Zoe Kravitz, PaulDano, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrel, Andy Serkis, Barry Keoghan, Jayme Lawson, PeterSarsgaard, and John Turturro starring alongside Pattinson.
Warner Brothers and the DC Universe have seemingly found a nice home for Gotham City in Glasgow, where multiple films have now made it their go-to location for filming. Both TheBatman and The Flash have used Glasgow as the setting for Gotham city, and the upcoming Batgirl film is now also filming in the city, and it seems we may be getting our first look at the film very soon.
Back in August, it was confirmed that Batgirl would, indeed, be filming in Glasgow, sometime in November, with production eventually kicking off following the Thanksgiving holiday. It’s now being reported that the film will be shooting exterior shots beginning January 5th and continuing to the 25th. Production will be filming around the Trongate entrance for a good duration of the month.
Please note that @Trongate103Arts & the surrounding area will be standing in as Gotham City for the new #BatGirl film. Please be assured that we will remain open, however access may only be via the Trongate entrance on some occasions between 05 – 25 January 2022.
The most likely scenario here is that we get our very first look at the film, aside from the concept art shown at Fandome. The first look will most likely come in the form of set photos taken by passerby fans or paparazzi. We got quite a lot of set photos and videos for TheFlash and The Batman during their time filming exteriors in the city, with both giving us our first look at Pattinson’s Batman and Affleck’s return.
Batgirl will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah with Leslie Grace set to star as the titular heroine. Grace will be joined by J.K. Simmons, Brendan Fraser, and Jacob Scipio. The film currently has no set release date.
Nirvana’s influence on The Batman has been pretty apparent since we got our very first look at the film. During the very first DC Fandome, the event closed out with a panel on The Batman, in which Matt Reeves took to the virtual stage to talk about the film and give us our very first look at the film, a trailer that would set the internet ablaze with excitement. The trailer featured Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” and it seems the song had a heavy influence on the film behind the scenes, inspiring this adaption of Bruce Wayne.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, director Matt Reeves dove into what inspired him while writing the film and how he came about developing the character.
When I write, I listen to music, and as I was writing the first act, I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way.’ That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse. So, I started making this connection to Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, and the idea of this fictionalized version of Kurt Cobain being in this kind of decaying manor.
Matt Reeves
This is definitely a side of Bruce Wayne we haven’t seen before and it is bound to be refreshing after many adaptions of the character. The Batman is currently set to release in theaters on Mar. 4, 2022.
Ahsoka is one of the most anticipated Star Wars series coming to Disney+, as it’ll follow one of the franchise’s most beloved characters. Ahsoka Tano’s debut in The Mandalorian was an event all on its own, as fans counted down the hours until the episode would premier to get their very first look at the animated darling to enter live-action. Following the conclusion of TheMandalorian‘s second season, it was announced on Disney’s Investors Day that Rosario Dawson would be picking up her lightsabers for a solo outing in her very own series.
The series will reportedly follow Ahsoka as she travels the galaxy alongside Sabine Wren, searching for Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn, one of the franchise’s most treacherous foes. Thrawn is yet another character in the Star Wars universe fans are eager to see make their live-action debut and the Illuminerdi recently shared some details on the character’s upcoming debut. He is described as “unequivocally, the most clever and calculating of the Emperor’s followers.”
Most of his description will remain the same from the original books and his animated adaptation, as he’ll be a “blue-skinned humanoid with glowing red eyes.” The big takeaway, however, is that he’ll also act as a series lead, which is a promising showcase that he’ll have quite an active role throughout the series rather than just being a villain hidden in the shadows.
The role of Thrawn has yet to be cast as the series is currently targeting an early 2022 production start date, with no current release date attached to the series. Rosario Dawson will star alongside Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Ivanna Sakhno, and Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker.
