  • Charlie Cox To Star in Netflix Spy Drama Series ‘TREASON’

Charlie Cox To Star in Netflix Spy Drama Series ‘TREASON’

Charlie Cox is readying another project for Netflix. The Daredevil actor has signed on to the spy series, Treason, for Netflix alongside Game of ThronesOona Chaplin and acclaimed action star Olga Kurylenko. The 6-episode spy drama hails from Matt Charman, who has penned titles such as Bridge of Spies and the forthcoming Netflix title Mothership starring Halle Berry.

The premise is as follows according to Deadline:

The drama follows Adam Lawrence, trained and groomed by MI6, whose career seems set. But when the past catches up with him in the form of Kara, a Russian spy with whom he shares a complicated past, he is forced to question everything and everyone in his life. A triangular relationship forms between Kara, Adam and his wife, Maddy; three people who are trying to expose each other’s secrets, navigate political and diplomatic relationships, whilst hanging onto their personal lives, and those they love most.

Treason marks Cox’s 2nd major rodeo with Netflix, having been the star of the company’s flagship superhero show for 3 years. No word yet on when the miniseries is slated to come out but it nonetheless is an exciting addition to the Daredevil’s star’s growing list of commitments in the coming years.

  • ‘X-Men: First Class’ Director Wants Taron Egerton or Aaron Taylor-Johnson as MCU Wolverine

‘X-Men: First Class’ Director Wants Taron Egerton or Aaron Taylor-Johnson as MCU Wolverine

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is wide open for the debut of the mutants, an event every fan is waiting for. Alongside the debut of the very concept, fans are also anxiously awaiting who Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios cast to play the most iconic mutants. X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn has some ideas for Wolverine, a character so definitively played by Hugh Jackman.

Well, he’s got older now, but I would say Tom Hardy would have…been awesome. I think Taron [Egerton] could do it in his sleep.  Aaron Taylor-Johnson could do it as well.  I mean, I think Aaron or Taron would be my first two choices could do it really well.

Vaughn has some interesting choices for sure. Egerton was once rumored to play Scott Summers in the latter X-Men films, a choice that would be perfect for the MCU version of Cyclops. Egerton is no stranger to comic book movies, having starred in the Kingsman franchise for a few years now. The same can be said for Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who played Quicksilver in the MCU and is onboard for a Sony Kraven spin-off film. Neither actors seem popular in Wolverine fancasts though it would be undeniably fascinating to see either actor take on the role.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Scores Third Highest Thursday Previews Take Ever

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Scores Third Highest Thursday Previews Take Ever

Box office forecasts for Spider-Man: No Way Home have predicted a sense-shattering opening weekend for the film. Now that the numbers from the film’s domestic Thursday night previews are starting to come in, it looks like the weekend total may exceed even the most generous of guesses.

Deadline is reporting that No Way Home took in $50 million yesterday, making it the third-largest Thursday previews take ever behind only Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The $50M ranks as the biggest preview night take of the pandemic, dusting the $13.2M made by Black Widow and now stands as the best preview night take for a Spider-Man film, more than tripling what Spider-Man: Homecoming took in back in 2017.

No Way Home, which currently holds the highest Rotten Tomatoes ranking of any live-action Spider-Man movie, now looks to be on pace for a $100 million Friday and some forecasts predict the domestic opening weekend totals could exceed $250 million and push $1B in global profits.

  • REVIEW: ‘The Wheel of Time’ Episode 1×7, “The Dark Along the Ways”

REVIEW: ‘The Wheel of Time’ Episode 1×7, “The Dark Along the Ways”

Amazon’s Wheel of Time returns with its penultimate episode this week, and it’s a big one. After a rather slow sixth episode, “The Dark Along the Ways” amps the ante from the get-go and doesn’t hit the brakes until the end.

The episode begins with a flashback to a woman (Tigraine Mantear) fighting off men in a snowy landscape. As the camera pans down, we see she’s pregnant and trying not to go into labor for the child’s sake. It’s clear there’s something special about her, though, as she moves through the air with such ease despite her pain and being incredibly pregnant. She’s able to defeat the men with little effort on her end. It makes for stellar action sequences, and honestly, a well-done opening that becomes important later in the episode. As she’s about to go into labor, believing she’s killed most – if not all – of the men, she’s approached by another with a sword pointed toward her. It’s then the episode jumps back to the present.

“The Dark Along the Ways” opts to pick up exactly where episode six left off. The group has made their way into the Ways, with Mat deciding to stay behind. Understandably, the young group is frustrated that they can’t go back for Mat, but quickly take to following Moiraine through the ways and toward the Eye of the World. Little do they know, however, they are being followed. Eager for rest, knowing there’s a long journey ahead, the crew seeks shelter as Loial tries to make sense of the cracked Seal. Whatever has been following, however, wakes them as it launches a surprise attack. The group takes off towards another gate, knowing their original destination to the Eye of the World through the Ways is no longer feasible. As they hurry, the wind tells them stories they are not meant to believe. While they never divulge what they’ve heard to one another, the wind ultimately stirs the tension among the group.

What follows is a series of acceptance and truths. We see these individuals finally come back together for the first time since the initial episode. Despite the arguing and fear that, rightfully, plagues them, by the episode’s end, they try to do what is right. Of course, they’re not aware of what Rand was told in the Wind or what he has come to know, thanks to Min of Fal Dara. He, of course, is the Dragon Reborn. As we soon come to learn, the woman in the cold opening, Tigraine, is Rand’s mother, and he is the baby that was born that day. His mother died shortly after giving birth and he was raised by a man who bore armor and the Heron blade. It was this man who would go on to raise the baby – Rand – in the village along the Two Rivers.

It’s a reveal that fans of the book will not be surprised by, however, it is wonderfully executed on screen. The episode takes the time to see Rand go through the motions as he comes to terms with who he is. In fact, it even goes back to show us that it was Rand, and not Egwene, that channeled during the attack in the Ways. The camerawork as he goes through various emotions, knowing he is who Moiraine has been searching for is so well done. More importantly, though, the episode manages to do something many television series could only hope to do: successfully tell a backstory that not only reveals a huge secret but also manages to push the story forward with ease. It’s easy to rely heavily on exposition and dialogue to achieve such a feat, and yet, Wheel of Time manages to do so with the perfect mixture of both.

By the episode’s end, everything has turned upside down. When Lan comes to the others and tells them Moiraine has broken their bond, having left without telling him, they quickly realize she’s going with Rand to the Eye of the World.

“The Dark Along the Ways” manages to do so much within the span of fifty minutes. It’s honestly quite impressive just how well-written and acted this episode was as a whole. Rosamund Pike‘s Moiraine takes a bit of a backseat to let the rest of the cast shine this go around, giving Daniel Henney‘s Lan time to tell his own story while also igniting the romance between Lan and Nynaeve.

As great of an episode as it is, however, there’s one minor issue. With only one episode left, Wheel of Time still has so much story to unpack. Whether or not it’ll be able to successfully conclude the arc it has begun ahead of Season 2? Well, that remains to be seen.

For now, though, the seventh episode of Wheel of Time is a must-watch. From the cinematography to the music and the cast, “The Dark Along the Ways” is an impressively strong effort that will transport fans into Robert Jordan‘s world.

  • Tom Holland Ready to “Take a Break”, Feels Like “We Might Be Ready to Say Goodbye to Spider-Man”

Tom Holland Ready to “Take a Break”, Feels Like “We Might Be Ready to Say Goodbye to Spider-Man”

Tom Holland has spent a lot of time in spandex over the past 6 years. Since filming for Captain America: Civil War began in 2015, Holland has appeared in 2 Avengers films and 3 solo Spider-Man films, including Spider-Man: No Way Home, out in theaters now. If anyone would have superhero fatigue, it’ Holland, given that he’s been filming something for the character every year for 6 years while also working on other films.

With No Way Home wrapping up a trilogy worth of stories for the character, Holland is looking forward to some time away from Spidey. But how much time? In a conversation with People, Holland shed some light on the subject. “I’ve spent the last six years being so focused on my career,” Holland says. “I want to take a break and focus on starting a family and figuring out what I want to do outside of this world.

As Holland looked forward to the time off, he reflected on his time as Spidey and had some interesting thoughts about his future in the role:

I’ve loved every minute of it. I’ve been so grateful to Marvel and Sony for giving us the opportunity and keeping us on and allowing our characters to progress. It’s been amazing. And that’s why for me, I don’t want to say goodbye to Spider-Man — but I feel like we might be ready to say goodbye to Spider-Man.

While in the past, Holland has said he’d love to play the character forever, he’s recently been a bit more open to seeing someone else suit up in the role. He told People that the shift in his thinking is about giving other people a stab at the character:

I don’t want to be responsible for holding back the next young person that comes in who deserves it just as much so. I would love to see a future of Spider-Man that’s more diverse — maybe you have a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman. We’ve had three Spider-Mans in a row; we’ve all been the same. It’d be nice to see something different.

Will Holland walk away from the character? Probably not if Sony producer Amy Pascal, who recently indicated that more Spidey collabs with Marvel Studios were on the way, has anything to say about it. Sony exec Tom Rothman tempered those expectations recently, but in reality it’s hard to foresee an immediate future where the two studios aren’t making more Spidey films and Holland isn’t back in the spandex.

  • ‘Hawkeye’ Directors on the Episode 5 Reveal and What to Expect from Kingpin

‘Hawkeye’ Directors on the Episode 5 Reveal and What to Expect from Kingpin

After briefly teasing him in Episode 3, directing duo Bert and Bertie brought Kingpin into the mix in last week’s episode of Hawkeye. The big boss made a brief appearance in the episode’s closing moments when it was revealed that Kate’s mom was acquainted with him (it was also revealed that she hired Yelena to kill Clint, which seems like something we all should have known by then).

Now that Kingpin, played once again by Vincent D’Onofrio, is actually in the picture, things look like they’ll get even more complicated for the Hawkeyes. Bert and Bertie talked to Insider about the reveal and what Kingpin’s presence means as the series prepares to wrap up in Episode 6.

The “how” of the reveal, the grainy still frame from a video sent to Kate by Yelena, was a major point of conversation following the episode. Bertie addressed the intro and its fulfillment of all the theories fans shared online leading up to it:

We kinda loved that it was this grainy, grainy impression of him and just confirms everyone’s suspicions because there have been lots of theories and that one’s been the outstanding theory about who this was. It’s Marvel. There’ve been different iterations of how Kingpin was revealed and this is the one that served the story, to hold him back to the very end of five.

Bert expounded on Bertie’s thoughts, saying, “There’s something about the simplicity of the simple tease,” said Bert about revealing the connection between Kingpin and Eleanor before cutting away at the end of Episode 5. “It was an interesting twist that she was there in the room with Kingpin,” she added, before teasing that the “possibilities are endless.”

Of course, now that Kingpin has finally been revealed, the big question is whether or not this character is the same one fans met on the the Netflix’s Daredevil. Turns out Marvel is in no hurry to answer that question for fans. When asked by Insider if Fisk was the same Fisk from Daredevil, Bertie replied, “Tune in on Wednesday for episode six.” And so we wait one more week.

  • ‘Blue Beetle’ Moves From an HBO Max Release to a Theatrical Release

‘Blue Beetle’ Moves From an HBO Max Release to a Theatrical Release

In a surprising move, Warner Bros. and DC have switched the release for the forthcoming Blue Beetle film. Originally announced as an HBO Max exclusive, joining the likes of Black Canary and Batgirl, Blue Beetle is now heading to the big screen.

Late Thursday evening, the studio revealed Blue Beetle will hit theaters on Aug. 18, 2023. Blue Beetle was first developed as an original film for HBO Max alongside Batgirl, which is currently in production for the streaming service. It’s unclear as what caused the studio to switch its release strategy, however, Blue Beetle will mark a huge milestone for the DC Extended Universe as it’ll mark the first Latino-led DC hero film.

Angel Manuel Soto is directing Blue Beetle from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer’s screenplay. Cobra Kai breakout Xolo Maridueña plays Jaime Reyes, who gains superpowers when he encounters alien armor.

As it stands, the other previously announced HBO Max films – Batgirl, Black Canary and Static Shock – look to remain HBO Max exclusive titles for the time being. Also in the works on HBO Max are series such as PeacemakerConstantine, Justice League DarkZatanna, The Batman Spinoffs (Penguin and GCPD) and Madame X.

  • ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Nearing End on Reshoots

‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Nearing End on Reshoots

In the latest Heat Vision blog entry on The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Couch shares some bits from Spider-Man: No Way Home’s carpet as many of the actors involved reflect back on their work. Of course, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong‘s appearance in the film alongside characters from Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, there are some fun connections to be had. Raimi has now taken it upon himself to bring the Doctor Strange sequel to life that’ll explore the madness of the multiverse.

In November we learned that the team entered production once again for extensive reshoots to “realize the full potential of the film” and it seems that they may finally be nearing completion of the additional photography. In the latest piece by the Hollywood Reporter, they got a chance to interview Wong on what the Raimi film might offer to audiences.

I’ve been marveling at his vision, his take. His overall resolve, as well. We were shooting in the middle of a pandemic and it was almost like, Doctor Strange and the Menace of the Multischedule. We were literally filming in a quantum way. There is no plan A. There’s a B and a C and then a D. Your mind is running all over the place. I have no doubt it’s going to be something fantastic

    Benedict Wong

It’s still exciting to think about what the upcoming sequel might have to offer to audiences and what they may have added throughout their reshoots. Loki introduced us to the concept of the multiverse within the MCU and we even saw those rules get broken in Ultron’s power grab during What If…?. Here’s hoping the first look won’t be for too long anymore to see just how mad the multiverse will end up being.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Jungle Cruise’ Boost Disney+ in November

‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Jungle Cruise’ Boost Disney+ in November

Disney+ has been seeing quite a bit of growth that made it a strong competitor. While Netflix still dominates the market, especially in the United States, the offerings based on existing IPs have been a strong marketable focus for the Disney-owned service. Marvel Studios and Star Wars offerings are at the forefront, but there is a stronger shift since their big cinema releases are making their way to the platform.

Exactly that happened in November, which saw a strong showing by Disney+ with the Disney+ Day releases of Shang-Chi and Jungle Cruise playing a big role. On top of it all, Hawkeye was released in the same month offering a lot to viewers. We did hear it had the lowest viewed premiere from all Marvel Studios series on the platform, but it still was quite close to WandaVision back in January. It’ll be interesting to see how the finale might perform after the confirmation of Vincent D’Onofrio‘s return as Kingpin.

Overall, Disney+ has grown to a competitive size within a short period of time. It’s uncertain what the future has in store for it, as they try to find new ways to grow, but expansion is still at the forefront of most of these offerings. Netflix also has the advantage of beings years in the market but has been pushing much more to expand its IP collection. We’ll see what the future has in store for this competitive market.
