    Alaqua Cox Talks How Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld Made Her Feel Welcomed on ‘Hawkeye’ Set

    The latest episode of Hawkeye introduced us to Alaqua Cox‘s Echo. It’s an incredible feat if you consider it is her first time acting, as she brings an intensity to the role. It was her time to shine as she’s also going to get a spin-off series afterward and she did not disappoint. The actress offered some insight into how it was on set for the first time, but more noticeably how Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld created an environment where she feels welcomed.

    In an interview in the latest D23 Magazine, she revealed that her new co-workers went out of their way to talk to her through ASL and ease her into the role. More importantly, it makes her feel welcome on set given her disability. It’s a cute gesture that goes a long way. You can read her full quote here:

    It was such an honor to work with them both. I think they are spectacular actors, and I have learned a lot from watching them work behind the scenes… I remember meeting Jeremy on my first day of work on-set; I was a nervous wreck, as this was my very first acting job. He then complimented me in American Sign Language (ASL), which comforted me. Hailee also spelled out her name to me in ASL at the studio where we were doing our stunt training sessions. I thought it was sweet of them putting in efforts to learn basic ASL to communicate with me. It means a lot to me as a Deaf person

    We have seen Marvel Studios make strides in inclusion with their projects. Eternals and Hawkeye included the first deaf characters where sign language was also prominently featured. The franchise has opened its arms to the diverse world that lives out there and it doesn’t look like they are going to stop it any time soon.

    ‘West Side Story’: Rachel Zegler on Honoring the Late Stephen Sondheim

    West Side Story recently held its world premiere, with critics praising the highly-anticipated adaptation of the beloved classic. Unfortunately, though, as the film readies to hit theaters, those involved are mourning the loss of Stephen Sondheim, who passed away on Nov. 26 from cancer. Sondheim, of course, penned the lyrics to West Side Story‘s memorable songs, along with lyrics for Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods. During a recent press junket for the film, the cast was asked what it was like to sing his songs that are still relevant to this day. Rachel Zegler, who plays Maria in the film, shared her experience:

    I think I can speak for everyone here today that a lot of us wouldn’t be here without the words of Stephen Sondheim. We are so lucky to not only be able to sing his lyrics, but to be able to talk to him about them. We consider them silly anecdotes because of how iconic they are but, he was always wanting to change them, and always wanting to evolve them. It’s really inspiring as an artist to watch someone who had created this insane piece of work and he still has things he wants to change sixty-four years later. I certainly wouldn’t be performing without Stephen Sondheim. May his memory be a blessing.

    While West Side Story still has a rabid fanbase all these years later, Sondheim admitted the lyrics embarrassed him as recently as last year. During an interview with ABC, the lyricist talked about being critical of his work on West Side Story.

    There are moments in it that embarrass me,” he told them. I’ll give you a poetic one. Says Tony in ‘Tonight,’ ‘today the world was just an address.’ I thought, ‘wait a minute, that sure sounds like he’s been reading a lot to me.’ I can’t imagine that a kid would say, having just met this girl and being, you know, the kind of kid he is, a street kid, would come up with a phrase that fancy.

    ‘Turner and Hooch’ Canceled at Disney+ After One Season

    It looks like the dog days are over for the cast and crew of Disney+’s Turner & Hooch. The streaming service has put an end to the reboot of 1989’s popular buddy cop franchise after only a single season, according to series star Reginald VelJohnson. The actor dropped the news during a recent chat with ComicBook.com, after being asked about the cloudy future of the show. He started by revealing there is still hope for Turner & Hooch, as Disney looks to shop the project to other networks. VelJohnson elaborated:

    Well, as far as I know, they’re trying to sell it to another network or something like that. That’s what I heard. But as of now, it’s not going to be picked up, I don’t think. It was fun to do. And working with the actors was great fun and I hope so, whatever they decided to do I’m with it. It’s okay. I enjoyed doing the sequel and, hopefully, we’ll have some time to do it again. But if not, I was glad for the experience.

    The actor, best known for his work on Die Hard and Family Matters, was the only person from the original Turner & Hooch film to return for the legacy series. He portrayed the partner of Tom Hanks‘ character, who did not make an appearance on the Disney+ show. Josh Peck replaced Hanks as the franchise lead, playing the son of the now-deceased hero. It centered around Peck’s character being paired with an unruly dog, much like his father before him. It’s joined the small number of shows to get canceled ahead of the potential second season and a shame given its popularity with fans.

    Latest ‘Hawkeye’ Teaser Offers First Look at Yelena Belova

    It looks like the latest teaser for the Disney+ series Hawkeye has given us our first look at Yelena Belova. It’s only a very brief scene, but see someone wearing goggles that might remind many of Sam Fisher from Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. Yet, if we take a look at the comics, it’s quite similar to the design that Yelena wore when she was an Adaptoid. As we know she is a confirmed return, the six eyes on her visor seem like the dead giveaway that it is Florence Pugh‘s character from the Black Widow film.

    It’s a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, but the marketing team knows exactly what they are doing with this tease, especially as it’ll confuse casual moviegoers but grab comic fans attention given the details included in this design.

    Going by Kate Bishop’s reaction, this might also be the moment that Belova joins the party and ends up hunting down an unsuspecting Clint Barton. It’ll be interesting to see how this conflict unravels and if she might become an ally once she realizes the story she was fed wasn’t true. There’s still the quesiton on why she is here in the first place, as Val put a bounty on Clint’s head, who already is having enough trouble juggling the emotional guilt. So, a new Black Widow coming in to take him on might not bode well for the archer.

    Mahershala Ali’s Introduction to Blade was the 1998 Wesley Snipes Film

    Blade is technically the grandfather of Marvel’s cinematic ventures. When the Stephen Norrington-directed film was released in 1998, it revolutionized not only superhero films for many years to come, but also played an integral role in representation within cinemas. Soon, Mahershala Ali will take on that very role as part of a wider universe, the fittingly titled Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    While still professionally avoiding questions on the project, Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast got a chance to ask the actor how he was introduced to the character. It seems, he went through the same story as many of us, as he states that:

    Well, only what I discovered like everyone else in the 90s with Wesley Snipes. […] I don’t think the guy even notice how at that time I was just accustomed to there not being black superheroes. The best you got was, like, He-Man, there was, I forget the character’s name in that, there was supposed to be a black character. At least, he was voiced by a black guy and modeled after a black guy, […] but you just weren’t seeing anyone. Once Spawn came out and Blade, then it was really exciting just to have some superheroes that look like you.

    It once again highlights how rare it was back in the day for kids of any age to feel represented in media. While downplayed, many kids from different backgrounds look for heroes they can look up to. So, there’s an important reason why Ali is tacking on the role and its importance of carrying on the torch that was lit by Black Panther, as he also briefly discusses in the podcast.

    RUMOR: ‘The Matrix Resurrection’ PS5 Tie-In ‘The Matrix Awakens’ Leaks

    Here’s a curious discovery. Reddit user u/the_andshrew shared a potential The Matrix Resurrection tie-in that was uncovered in the PSN’s backend that is only available through the PlayStation 5. It’s supposedly made in Unreal Engine 5, which is the cornerstone of the new generation of gaming. All we have is a visual that teases the title of The Matrix Awakens and the iconic visual design used in most of the upcoming film’s marketing and trailers.

    The title of “experience” is a signifier this might not be an actual game. It might be similar to the Spider-Man: Far From Home tie-in VR experiences, where you get to spend some fun time in the shoes of your favorite webhead. So, we might take on the role of Neo in a short segment, or they might play on you entering the Matrix through the VR headset. It’ll be interesting to see what this might end up being once it is officially announced.

    Just recently, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania wrapped production. Everyone has kept an eye out on the Internet if some crew merch might find its way online and luckily exactly that happened. Ace Ruele shared a t-shirt the stunt team used that had quite an interesting tease. What sticks out is that Paul Rudd‘s Ant-Man helmet is heavily damaged and cracked, which may not bode well for our favorite size-changing hero. If you look closer you’ll see Kang in the helmet’s reflection that may be familiar to people.

    If you look closely, it turns out its fanart from artist spdrmnkyxxiii that you can find online based on what Jonathan Majors could look like as Kang. It’s not uncommon for these to find their way online and crew merch is commonly not created by official sources but brought to life by the teams. They sometimes tease elements of the film or TV show but don’t include actual artwork. Still, it’s a great design.

    It’s still a great tease and highlights once again that Kang the Conqueror will have quite a large role in the upcoming story. We know very little about Quantumania and the usual comedic Ant-Man franchise might face quite the shakeup. The cracked helmet is quite foreboding especially with how involved the stunt team is in the action. We’ll see what the future has in store for Scott Lang.

    Exclusive: Mighty Ducks Star Brady Noon Wants to Be the Next Wolverine

    Brady Noon is breaking out. Following his recurring role as Tommy Darmody in Boardwalk Empire, Noon co-starred in 2019’s Good Boys before landing the lead in the Disney Plus series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. Noon’s latest project is the Disney Plus original animated film, Diary of a Wimpy Kid where the 15-year old actor voiced Greg Heffley, the main character and the titular wimpy kid.

    Disney and Noon seem to have a good relationship. He’s set to return for Season 2 of The Mighty Ducks and is expected to reprise the role of Greg in the 2022 Diary of a Wimpy Kid sequel, Rodrick Rules. As we’ve seen before, when Disney likes an actor, the studio likes to continue to work with them across multiple of their platforms. With that in mind, our Arlyn Murphy had an interesting question for Noon when they spoke earlier this week. Given that Disney owns Marvel Studios, Murphy asked Noon what Marvel character he’d like to bring to life if given his choice. 

    If I were to have to play any Marvel character, I’d probably want to play Wolverine as a kid or, like, Wolverine as a teenager. Being a young Hugh Jackman! I feel like that’d be pretty cool.

    A younger Wolverine would certainly be one way for Marvel Studios to differentiate its version from the Fox version that Jackman played over two decades. We only briefly saw a young Logan in the Fox films, which rushed through the story told over six comic issues between 2001 and 2002 in Origin. A more direct adaptation of the comic might, in fact, make for a very good Disney Plus series, so Noon just might be onto something here. Could he be the first actor to go SNIKT in the MCU? With the direction his career is headed in now, it seems like anything is possible. 

    Diary of a Wimpy Kid hits Disney Plus on Dec. 3.

    ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘Eternals’ Assembled Episodes To Premiere This Month

    The year may be coming to a close real soon but the outpouring of MCU content is yet to slow down. This month alone sees the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home as well as the remaining episodes of Hawkeye. In addition to that, the Assembled episodes of Hawkeye and last month’s Eternals are slated for release on Disney+ later this month. Eternals: Assembled is on track for a December 22 premiere while Hawkeye: Assembled is later on December 29.

    It’s worth noting that these are the current listings for Disney+ in Latin America though it’s very safe to assume that North America will likely get the same release date. The Assembled series has proven to be a fascinating look at the behind-the-scenes process for this brand new phase of the MCU. Every episode gives new insight on how aspects of the Phase 4 projects are brought to life as well as concepts that didn’t make the cut. With rumored surprises for Hawkeye, it’ll be interesting to see the creatives talk about them in detail.

    REVIEW: Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ Is a Gorgeous Reminder on the Importance of Love

    It’s a tricky thing adapting beloved classics. The process is, for lack of a better example, much like falling back in love with an ex. There’s an unhealthy temptation to go back and do what you already know. A desire to revisit all of the highs and ignore every low. Yet, much like a seasoned therapist, a filmmaker must realize that it’s not worth retelling a story unless it has something new to say. With a vibrant, lively, updated take on the musical staple West Side Story, the legend Steven Spielberg has done just that.

    From a technical standpoint, the tale of Tony and Maria has never been prettier. Every shot, from the moment the film begins, feels like an ode to a time just out of reach. It’s a colorful, glowing, real-life fantasy set on the mean streets of 1950s New York. The admiration for the movie’s titular twenty blocks is apparent, with Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner packing their two-and-a-half-hour runtime with plenty of knowing nods to a beleaguered city that starts to take on a life of its own. It’s everything the greatest generation wanted you to think about New York, including grime that sparkles and subway brakes that sound like musical notes.

    Justin Peck works wonders with his choreography, crafting the kind of iconic dance numbers that tell every bit as much of the story as any lyric could. Almost every choreographed sequence pulsates with emotion, something especially true of bits like “America” and “Gee, Officer Krupke,” which allow their performers to exhibit a charming amount of joy amidst the pain of the film’s later acts. Interviews with the cast and crew indicated an enormous amount of fun was had on set, and the film’s final product proves this to be true. There’s an admirable energy that radiates off this movie, led in large part by breakout star Ariana DeBose and her formidable take on Anita.

    While the wildly talented Rachel Zegler does appear to be one gem of a find for Spielberg, it’s her character’s family that really pushes large portions of the film past the finish line. Debose‘s Anita and the wonderfully subtle David Alverez, as Bernardo, are the backbone of a story about love, family, and the downfalls of pride. Their chemistry is off the charts, and it becomes easy to find yourself rooting for them over anybody else in the film. That being said, big-screen newcomer Mike Faist puts in a commendable display as Riff, the troubled and ignorant leader of the Jets, as he expertly maneuvers their tragic downfall and shift from child-like tomfoolery to heartbreaking deviance.

    This new rendition of West Side Story is a feat of practical narration, on the part of cast and crew alike. However, it was not simply the dazzling visuals that resulted in so many of us leaving the theater with a gleam of both sadness and hope in our eyes. It was the magnificent Stephen Sondheim, whose timeless lyrics were supported by the swelling sounds of the New York Philharmonic and Kushner‘s impassioned dialogue, that really drove the point of the film home.

    The true beauty of this movie can be found in its steadfast assertion that love conquers all. There is not a single moment in West Side Story that cannot be traced back to a character’s ability, or lack thereof, to show compassion. Sondheim‘s lyrics somehow seem more relevant than ever, telling tales of racial divide, unfortunate upbringings, and the tragic, youthful inability to simply give in and go home. Humans are creatures of relation, and we’ve spent the better part of our recent lives deprived of that. Perhaps this is why it’s so hard to watch characters with so much potential, in families found and families bound by blood, throw it all away in the name of vanity. Innocence is destroyed when people choose power over love, something that feels more apparent in 2021 than it did sixty years ago.

    Ultimately, Spielberg and company have crafted what may be one of the rare improvements over an original production. An energetic cast brings to life a story with every bit of the magic you’d expect, with more commentary than you might be used to. It’s necessary viewing for fans of musical theater, and something I’d recommend any moviegoer attempt to see while it’s still on the big screen. Just make sure you bring something to cry into.
