‘FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’: The MCU in Madripoor and Beyond

The fictional island of Madripoor is set to make its MCU debut in the Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, perhaps even this very Friday. We’ll finally get to see how such an important location translates from the comics into live-action, and we very well might need to thank “The Blip” for such an opportunity.

When Thanos snapped his fingers in Avengers: Infinity War the Marvel Cinematic Universe was forever changed. The Avengers managed to bring everyone back but certain things just weren’t able to be fixed by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, as the five years it took them to do so took their toll. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has already shown us how much things have changed even after half the world’s population came back, and in WandaVision, through Director Hayward, we got an idea of just how hard those five years were on everybody that had to endure them.

You have no idea what it was like. What it took to keep the lights on.

    Madripoor

This extreme change in status-quo within the Marvel Universe gives Marvel Studios the perfect opportunity to justify how a place like Madripoor, basically unmentioned through twenty-three movies and one tv show, can all of a sudden become an integral part of the MCU. With half the world’s population gone it would make sense for countries to concentrate the entirety of their diminished military power closer to home where it would make the most difference. This would mean that super-powers like the US or organizations like NATO would stop being so involved in world affairs creating a power-vacuum in certain parts of the world that would tend to be filled by those seeking power on their own terms. This way a place like the “Principality of Madripoor” could have gained a level of economic and social relevance it just didn’t have before, justifying its absence from the storylines being told up to this point.

Bagalia in “All-New Captain America” #2

And just like Madripoor, there are several other locations from the comics that might very well be introduced into the MCU in the coming years using “The Blip” as the catalyst. By having areas around the globe without proper protection by the so-called good guys, places like Bagalia could pop up by being in the perfect situation to establish themselves as the sovereign island nation ruled by criminals we know from the comics, becoming a haven for the ill-intentioned. Also, a nation like Latveria, led by a ruthless ruler, could thrive in the conditions the world found itself in for five years. Not having mentioned it since 2008’s Iron Man would become a non-issue, since only after taking advantage of surrounding nations that might have been left to fend for themselves in the five years where there wasn’t so much oversight, did it become such a relevant player on the global stage.

Latveria in “The Children’s Crusade” #4

From a different perspective, and knowing how Marvel Studios enjoys approaching certain events and locations taken from the comics by giving them their own take, a place like the Blue Area of the Moon could also be something introduced using The Snap and the following five years that are yet mostly unexplored in the MCU. Its discovery might have prompted by an attempt to establish a defense system on the Moon with the prospect of keeping another alien invasion from reaching the planet in the future, and we could now be faced with a fully constructed human facility built in the previous five years, and perhaps even dealing with the Skrull, Kree, and Cotati background. Its development in secrecy might even have something to do with the theory that Steve Rogers “is in a secret base on the moon looking down over us”.

The Blue Area of the Moon in “Empyre: Avengers” #0

The bottom line is that there are a number of locations and even characters that would have had a hard time being introduced into the MCU after more than a decade without being acknowledged. But “The Blip”, besides having been an exceptional way to finish The Infinity Saga by taking The Avengers to their limits, just might prove to be the smartest thing Marvel Studios has ever done as it manages to set up an almost infinite amount of brand new possibilities for Phase 4 without having to retcon a single thing from past features.

  • ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Takes Over ‘Attack on Titan’s Spot As The Most Popular Show

‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Takes Over ‘Attack on Titan’s Spot As The Most Popular Show

Unlike cinema releases, we will never truly know how successful a show or film is on a streaming service. They refuse to publicize any information that would allow analysts to get a good idea of how a project is doing. Luckily, there are a variety of companies that analyze data to offer a glimpse of a show’s performance. Well, it seems that Falcon and the Winter Soldier may have already gained the title of “most popular show” beating out the last owner of that title, the anime series Attack on Titan.

Keep in mind, with only its second episode, the show managed to beat out the finale of the highly popular manga adaptation. Not just that, it is also tracking ahead of the previous Marvel Studios entry, WandaVision after its first week with two episodes. Now, Parrot Analytics does point out that the show is behind The Mandalorian‘s demand, but it makes sense if you consider that the show was one of the major selling points of the streaming service when it was released. They do not include a comparison to the second season.

Of course, the show’s demand grows with each week and it has already managed to do what WandaVision didn’t accomplish until its fifth episode. Of course, we have to keep in mind that these aren’t actual numbers. They are based on external analysis. So, we need to accept a potential margin in tracking errors, but it certainly proves the show’s popularity. It’s going to be interesting to see if they continue this trend once Loki releases in June.

  • Netflix Nearing Biggest Streaming Deal Ever for ‘Knives Out’ Sequels

Netflix Nearing Biggest Streaming Deal Ever for ‘Knives Out’ Sequels

It looks like Rian Johnson‘s Knives Out franchise has a bright future ahead. According to Deadline, Netflix is currently closing in on a deal worth $400M+ for the two sequels. They would focus around a mystery solved by the super sleuth Benoit Blanc. Daniel Craig will return to the iconic role. Johnson is already working on the sequel’s script and will produce alongside Ram Bergman. The film is aiming for a production start in Greece by June 28th. It is the largest deal in streaming history that became a bidding war between Netflix, Apple, and Amazon. The original film was acquired by MRC, who distributed it with the help of Lionsgate. On a very modest budget of $40M, it managed to make $300M worldwide. As such, any future sequels became a hot commodity for making a lot of money on little investment.

Still, the deal could imply that the future sequels will get a budget increase. The money is made to balance out what the film would’ve gained through the regular Box Office. Netflix saw the property and believed in its potential to make up for it through its subscription model and took the investment opportunity. As Deadline points out, it would be quite the event film franchise for the streaming giant. It’s interesting to think that the film came together during the downtime for Daniel Craig after Danny Boyle‘s departure from the James Bond franchise. The last film had an amazing cast and after its success, we might see many more iconic actors try to weasel their way into the next production.

  • ‘Marvel Studios Assembled’ Sets Return Date for ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’

‘Marvel Studios Assembled’ Sets Return Date for ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’

Marvel Studios behind-the-scenes series, Assembled, has set the date for its next episode. According to Disney + Espana, an episode taking a look at the making of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is set for April 30th, one week after the series concludes its run.

The first episode of the ongoing series gave fans a 60-minute look into the making of WandaVision and we can probably expect something similar here for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. As it stands, Marvel Studios looks to have episodes planned for Loki, Black Widow and Hawkeye. Given how well the WandaVision episode was received by fans, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the series expand beyond the original plan and continue giving fans the opportunity to peek behind the curtain of their productions.

  • 90s ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series’ Voice Actor Rumored for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Sequel

90s ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series’ Voice Actor Rumored for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Sequel

It looks like the 90s kids might get their Spider-Man back. That Hashtag Show reports that Christopher Daniel Barnes, who voiced the web-slinger in the 1994 Spider-Man: The Animated Series, will be coming back for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. The report says the actor will only return for a small part. His role in the much-anticipated sequel will reportedly only amount to a few scenes, which make up around no more than five-to-ten minutes of screen time.

Nonetheless, it should be a thrill for fans of the cult classic animated series to see their Spider-Man back in action. Barnes was the voice of one of the most popular Marvel characters for nearly a decade. He will surely be welcomed back with open arms if the rumor turns out to be true. Spider-Man: The Animated Series ran for five seasons, which are all available on Disney+. It was the precedent for an entire animated universe that adapted the world of Marvel. Many former viewers have expressed their desire to see Barnes return to the role in the past.

He came back to voice the Noir version of the character in the video game Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions but didn’t return to the role since. Into the Spider-Verse 2 has the potential to bring back many fan-favorite versions of Spider-Man, and Barnes’s version of the character might be the beginning of a new and exciting line-up. Around two months ago, we reported that it seemed like The Spot would join the film as the main antagonist. So, we might see one of the Spider-Mans’ most insane stories yet that will continue to expand the Spider-Verse.

  • ‘Naomi’ Adds Barry Watson and More to Expanding Cast

‘Naomi’ Adds Barry Watson and More to Expanding Cast

The upcoming CW drama focused on the recently introduced DC character, Naomi, is currently being developed for the CW Network. The show will feature Kaci Walfall in the title role, and the series has now added multiple more to its cast. The production has added Barry Watson as Greg, Naomi’s adoptive father. He gets described as a retired veteran and Mouzam Makkar as her adoptive mother. Amongst more additions includes Mary-Charles Jones, Aidan Gemme, and Daniel Puig. The series has also set Amanda Marsalis to direct and co-executive produce the pilot episode of the series.

For those who aren’t close to the Naomi comics, her adoptive father Greg is from the planet Raan. In that storyline, Thanagar and Raan were in the midst of a war in which Dee, played by Alexander Wraith in the upcoming series, fled the war. Greg came to Earth to find Dee, a Thanagarian but ended up staying after meeting his now-wife. It’s unclear if the series will make him completely human or just part of the military as a cover.

Other additions to the cast include Mary-Charles Jones as Annabelle, Naomi’s best friend, who is incredibly loyal and will tell her the hard truths. Aidan Gemme will play Jacob, described as “sweet, shy and nerdy,” as well as Annabelle’s longtime boyfriend. Finally, Daniel Puig will play Nathan, a high school jock who also happens to be Naomi’s Ex. Naomi currently has no release date. The pilot got written by Ava Duvernay and Jill Blankenship, who is producing it through Array Productions.

  • ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’: ‘Pen15’s Dallas Liu Joins Cast in an Undisclosed Role

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’: ‘Pen15’s Dallas Liu Joins Cast in an Undisclosed Role

It’s been quite a chaotic beginning of the year. We finally got the finalized release for Black Widow, but it ended up pushing back the original July release, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Well, it seems that something found its way online, as Deadline has revealed that the actor Dallas Liu, who many might recognize from Hulu’s Pen15, is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His role is still being kept under wraps and Marvel Studios has declined comment on whatever role he may have.

    shang-chi dallas liu

Liu has been appeared in the Snapchat series Players but is well-known for his role Shuji Ishii-Peters in the previously-mentioned Hulu series. He has also appeared in Nichole Bloom‘s drama short Ella. It’s uncertain how large a role he’ll have in Daniel Cretton’s upcoming MCU adaptation. He will join an outstanding cast that includes Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, and Ronnie Chieng.

The film is currently set to release in September and we still have not seen a single trailer for the film. The current uncertainty seems to have caused many film production companies to focus on short-term advertising. So, we might not even see the first trailer until around three-to-two months before its official release. Hopefully, Godzilla vs. Kong‘s current revitalization of the Box Office could kickstart a return to form that may see an earlier trailer release in the usual six-month window that we’re used to from the times before the pandemic.

First Leaked ‘Titans’ Set Photos Reveals Wanted Posters and Red Hood’s Threat

Titans have been quite busy preparing for its upcoming season. After facing various delays due to the pandemic, it was finally able to enter production earlier this year. We know that Curran Walter‘s Jason Todd will pick up the mantle of Red Hood in the upcoming season. titans red hood. We’ll also see the addition of Barbara Gordon, who will be played by Savannah Welch, and Scarecrow. Now, we don’t know quite yet how all these pieces will fall together, but a recent set photo from @TOFilming_EM has offered a look at wanted posters for the various team members. It even includes Blackfire, who was teased in the previous season as a big bad. It also teases that the “Red Hood Rises, which could be building up towards Jason building up his own gang under the iconic moniker.

There is a lot to take from these images. The Wanted posters groups Blackfire with the Titans. So, they might end up working together at some point in the series. She may also be the reason they are on the run from the law, which could mean they are involuntarily stuck with her. The “Red Hood Rises” posters are also really interesting. It almost makes it seem like they are a gang. They are using the red hoodie design to visualize the character, but not the iconic mask we know he will wear throughout the series.

He also has been commonly connected with groups, such as Batman: Arkham Knight making him the leader of a group of mercenaries. The next season is going to shake things up in an interesting way. I also love the question mark from the Riddler tucked way in the corner, which could tease his arrival or just act as a nice Easter Egg.

  • ‘RICK AND MORTY’ Season 5 Premiere Revealed Along with Trailer

‘RICK AND MORTY’ Season 5 Premiere Revealed Along with Trailer

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s Emmy-winning animated series, Rick and Morty, will return to Adult Swim on June 20th, just a little over a year since the Season 4 finale first aired. The day has been dubbed “Rick and Morty Day” by the network promising “a megadose of access and content of all things Rick and Morty” on what they’re calling a Multiverse Holiday. The announcement came with a fresh, new Season 5 trailer which you can view below.

Season 4 ended on arguably the series’ most down note to date as Rick owned up to the fact that he is a terrible father after realizing he had become unclear on which Beth was his daughter and which was a clone of her that he created. The Season 5 trailer promises a return to the kind of irreverent and intelligent humor fans of the show have come to expect and will certainly see Rick come to terms with the consequences of his mulitversal hijinks.
