CinemaCon: Marvel Studios Title Change for 2025 Film Sparks Online Speculation

Marvel Studios One Above All, Kevin Feige, took the stage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas for the first time and the head honcho did not disappoint. In addition to rolling out the first looks at footage from Deadpool and Wolverine and Captain America: Brave New World, Feige also confirmed a minor title change to one of their 2025 projects and left fans with a cryptic tease about its meaning.

During a recently staged behind-the-scenes video from Marvel Studios’ star Florence Pugh, a new logo and title for the studio’s Thunderbolts project was revealed. Originally titled Thunderbolts, the film’s new logo revealed it was now titled Thunderbolts*. About as minor of a change as one can imagine. During his time on stage in Las Vegas, Feige confirmed the title change while showing off the new logo and also leaving fans hanging as to the meaning of the asterisk. “Yes, you’ll notice the asterisk on Thunderbolts. That is the official title of Thunderbolts and we won’t talk more about that until after the movie comes out.” teased Feige, leaving fans to do what they do best: speculate wildly.

Typically when placed at the end of a word, an asterisk indicates some sort of footnote is being cross-referenced. That does not seem to be the case here which leaves a little mystery around the minor change to the title. It’s possible the asterisk indicates some additional context is needed to understand the title of the film which is also the title of the team of antiheroes who undertake a secret mission in the film. Given all the online hubbub about one purported explanation for how the team gets the name, it’s possible that the asterisk is indeed a reference to how the team chooses its moniker. However, fans are looking much deeper for explanations.

One possible explanation that’s beginning to take root is that the asterisk somehow indicates that the team will become known as the Dark Avengers, a team that debuted in Marvel Comics in 2009. Ironically enough, word reached my ears almost 6 years ago that Marvel Studios commissioned a writer to put a Dark Avengers script together. At the time, the studio was also still developing Eternals, Black Widow and sequels to hits like Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy that were all intended to be set after Avengers: Endgame, which still hadn’t even hit theaters at the time. Time went on, COVID happened and we assumed that like many other projects that begin development–such as Power Pack–, Dark Avengers was moved to the bottom of the pile, never to be heard from again.

Could the asterisk point to a Dark Avengers adaptation? Possibly, though the composition of the current roster of Thunderbolts (Yelena Belova, Taskmaster, Ghost and John Walker) is a long way from the collection of scum and villainy that Norman Osborn put together for the Dark Avengers. Even thematically, the name change doesn’t truly fit since the Dark Avengers were almost all non-redeemable sociopaths and psychopaths. However, as we say far too often, Marvel Studios has no qualms about co-opting names and titles without any intention of comic-accurate adaptations, as proven by the fact that their roster of Thunderbolts features not a single character from the original team despite Daniel Bruhl’s Zemo, founder of the OG team in the comics, being fully established in the MCU. Thunderbolts* is cool but Dark Avengers has the A-word in it and the A-word sells.

Thunderbolts* is currently slated to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.

    About Dark Avengers

The Dark Avengers, a formidable and morally ambiguous team within Marvel Comics, emerged as a stark departure from the traditional hero archetype. Introduced during the “Dark Reign” storyline, orchestrated by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato, the Dark Avengers debuted in “Dark Avengers” #1 in 2009.

Led by Norman Osborn, the former Green Goblin and head of the clandestine organization H.A.M.M.E.R. (replacing S.H.I.E.L.D. during the “Dark Reign”), the Dark Avengers were a twisted reflection of the original Avengers. Osborn meticulously handpicked each member, often selecting individuals with dark pasts and a willingness to embrace villainy or anti-heroism.

One of the most notable aspects of the Dark Avengers was their masquerade as Earth’s mightiest heroes. Osborn, now rebranded as the Iron Patriot, donned a modified version of Iron Man’s armor and positioned himself as the leader of this new Avengers team. The team roster comprised individuals who assumed the identities of classic Avengers characters, albeit with their own unique twist. For instance, Bullseye took on the mantle of Hawkeye, Moonstone portrayed Ms. Marvel, Venom (Mac Gargan) became Spider-Man, and Daken, the son of Wolverine, assumed the guise of his father.

The dynamic within the Dark Avengers was fraught with tension and moral ambiguity. While some members harbored genuine desires to reform or redeem themselves, others reveled in their newfound power and embraced their darker impulses. This internal conflict often led to explosive confrontations and power struggles within the team.

Despite their dubious motives and methods, the Dark Avengers proved to be a formidable force, wielding significant influence over the Marvel Universe during the “Dark Reign” era. Their actions challenged the very fabric of heroism, blurring the lines between good and evil and forcing readers to question the nature of heroism itself.

Over time, as Osborn’s machinations unraveled and his grip on power weakened, the Dark Avengers disbanded, with each member returning to their own path, whether it be redemption, continued villainy, or anti-heroism. However, their legacy continues to linger in the annals of Marvel Comics, serving as a testament to the complexity of the human condition and the ever-shifting nature of morality in a world of super-powered beings.

  • CinemaCon: Hugh Grant to Play an Oompa-Loompa in Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Wonka’

CinemaCon: Hugh Grant to Play an Oompa-Loompa in Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Wonka’

Warner Bros. Discovery’s big CinemaCon showcase seemingly had two big centerpieces: DC Studios and Timothée Chalamet. Besides sharing the first footage for his upcoming major release of Dune: Part 2, they also had some footage ready for his other big project, Wonka. The Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory prequel explores the early days of the chocolatier in musical form, and it seems we also know who will take on the role of at least one Oompa-Loompa.

It should be noted that this was first reported by One Take News, as it has been unveiled that Hugh Grant, who recently had a major role in the Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves film, will be playing an Oompa-Loompa in the prequel. There’s no word if they are sticking to what we saw in Tim Burton’s take, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, where all Oompa-Loompas were played by Deep Roy.

Some reactions have hinted that the visual of Grant in the role has burned itself into their mind, it definitely sounds like it would be quite a fun role for the actor. Though, it’s unclear how big of a role he might truly have in the film and if we will also see him sing. It does seem likely and the visual of him in the make-up from the original 1971 film creates a potentially hilarious nightmare fuel for viewers.

  • CinemaCon: First Footage Description of ‘Dune: Part 2’ Finds it’s Way Online

CinemaCon: First Footage Description of ‘Dune: Part 2’ Finds it’s Way Online

While most eyes have been on the future presentation of DC Studios and their current releases, which still were developed under the former leadership, they had quite a bit of other projects to show off during this year’s CinemaCon. They gave visitors a look at Barbie and its unique world and it seems the first footage of the long-awaited Dune sequel has been released for attendees. Us online at least got the description of the footage that was showcased during CinemaCon.

It seems the big focus of the footage was on Paul Atreides, played once again by Timothee Chalamet, learning to ride a giant sandworm. It makes sense given that this was the big tease at the end of the first entry and Paul’s entire storyline is wrapped around him finding his way among the locals of the planet Arrakis. They also seemingly got a first look at Florence Pugh and Austin Butler during the footage but not many details have been shared on what they might look like.

It’s definitely interesting that this is their selling point as Chalamet made the bold statement of it being “done practically” which has become a bit of a habit to imply certain elements are done that way with the rest added afterward. It’s also become a bit of a marketing habit to make the film stand out in the pool of effects-heavy film selection. Most of what we’ll see on the screen will be effects work as there is no real giant sandworm, but it makes for a good way to sell it to audiences.

  • DC’s ‘The Flash’ First Screening to Take Place at CinemaCon

DC’s ‘The Flash’ First Screening to Take Place at CinemaCon

We’ve known for a while that DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery have put a lot of hope into the new multiverse-based film The Flash. It’ll see the return of Michael Keaton in the role of Batman and offer a unique take on the original Flashpoint comic storyline. It seems that Warner Bros. believes they have a gem at their hands as they will give the first debut screening at the upcoming CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

What makes this worth its own announcement is the fact that it’ll premiere on April 25th, quite some time ahead of its actual premiere in theaters. That commonly is a sign that they believe in the film similar to what we saw last year with Top Gun: Maverick; though it might not have the same box office performance as that film. Still, Warner Bros. is putting a lot of hope into this film even with the controversies surrounding its main star, Ezra Miller.

So far, they managed to keep the actor out of any new headlines that could hinder the film’s release and they also have two additional stars they are putting a lot of focus on. The early advertising has a strong focus on Keaton’s return as Batman and it’s almost a bit too much given that it’s supposed to be a film about the Flash. There’s also the premiere appearance of Sasha Calle as Supergirl, but her own future is in doubt given James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s new vision. Here’s hoping positive buzz can overshadow any real confusion moving forward.

  • CinemaCon: Every ‘Avatar’ Sequel to Act as a Standalone Film

CinemaCon: Every ‘Avatar’ Sequel to Act as a Standalone Film

It looks like Disney is ending their CinemaCon panel with a grand showcase of the future of the Avatar franchise. Given that the film has clung to the top spot for a long-time, there’s a lot of hope for Disney to bank on that success. So, it seems that they are kick-starting the upcoming release of Avatar 2 with a re-release of the original in September. Yet, the big reveal during the event is that the three Avatar sequels being filmed back-to-back are currently planned as standalone films with some connections. There’s no detail on what that might look like, but they may try to simply explore the changes of Pandora throughout many generations.

The first film is going to focus more the world beneath the waves of Pandora. So, it opens up many new opportunities to see just how vast the planet is and what it has to offer. We don’t know if we’ll continue to focus on humanoid characters or the local Na’vi, who are teased as part of concept art.

Of course, they could also build upon the set-up of the first film yet with how long it took for this new film to hit theaters, they might want to use it as a time skip. Perhaps we get to see different Na’vi and their living arrangements that act as a contrast to what we saw in the 2009 original. For now, it’s just speculation until we actually get a tease of what the fil has to offer.

  • Warner Bros. Teases ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ at CinemaCon

Warner Bros. Teases ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ at CinemaCon

CinemaCon is the place for studios to showcase their tentpole releases and plans for the future. Even if a project isn’t far into production, they sometimes share some footage or tease what they are working on, such as Sony showing Kraven the Hunter footage. So, it’s not entirely surprising then that Warner Bros. Discovery teased some footage from the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

The footage Warner Bros. debuted at CinemaCon showed Jason Momoa‘s Aquaman/Arthur working with Orm to try and take down Black Manta. In the sequel, Black Manta is said to be leading an army of sorts and is far more powerful. The two brothers will need to work together to try and defeat Manta, so we’ll see more of their relationship explored. This being an Aquaman film, though, there are plenty of new ships and robots, too, for fans to enjoy.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will hit theaters on March 17, 2023.

  • Warner Bros. Teases ‘The Flash’ During CinemaCon

Warner Bros. Teases ‘The Flash’ During CinemaCon

Warner Bros. Discovery has been shaking up the industry and there have been many questions about what we might expect from the future of its DC Slate. Still, there are quite a few films in development and CinemaCon is the perfect place to tease what the future has in store. While delayed, one of the biggest releases is The Flash which will also redefine the DC Extended Universe moving forward.

Unsurprisingly, the studio opted to focus on Michael Keaton’s return as Batman in the forthcoming film. The clip from the film saw Keaton’s Batman sporting multiple Batman suits, while also teasing his batmobile. “You wanna get nuts? Let’s get nuts.”

The biggest news, however, is that Michael Shannon is returning as Zod in The Flash. Shannon was last seen as Zod in Man of Steel, which saw Henry Cavill‘s Superman controversially snap Zod’s neck in the film. Since then, remembers have circulated of Zod’s possible return, but this marks the first official confirmation of his return to the DC Extended Universe.

  • BREAKING: ‘The Batman’ Sequel Officially In Development

BREAKING: ‘The Batman’ Sequel Officially In Development

Back in March, the world was introduced to Matt Reeves‘ take on Gotham City and the Batman mythos with the fittingly named The Batman. The film was a resounding hit, finding universal praise from fans and critics alike. Not only did it manage to bring in over $750 million at the worldwide box office, but now it’s also dominating on HBO Max, quickly becoming the most-watched DC film in its first week with 4.1 million households streaming the film. With success like that, a sequel announcement to the film was only a question of time.

At the Warner Brothers panel during CinemaCon, Reeves is also confirmed to return to direct the upcoming sequel. Robert Pattinson will, of course, return as the caped crusader, but the plot details of the film are still unknown. Still, it seems that they plan to have the team from the first entry return for the sequel that’ll continue Bruce Wayne’s story of realizing what it means to be a symbol for his city.

We might still have to wait a bit until we get our first look or even tease what the sequel will be about, but it seems likely it’ll build upon the ending of the first film as Gotham is flooded. Batman having to save civilians while a new threat shows its fangs would make for a unique backdrop and challenge in a Batman film.

  • First CinemaCon Footage Description of Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Finds its Way Online

First CinemaCon Footage Description of Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Finds its Way Online

It looks like Sony did have something special for visitors of CinemaCon, as Sean O’Connel shared some details on footage that was shown from their upcoming Spider-Man spinoff film, Kraven the Hunter. Even though it just recently started production it seems they already had a little teaser ready for visitors. He shared it on his @WGreatPowerBook Twitter profile on a book covering Sony’s adaptations of the franchise.

In his Twitter post, he highlights that it was a rather brief sizzle real showing Aaron Taylor-Johnson hanging on to a car, which was first revealed in leaked set photos not too long ago. It seems that they also showed the new logo, but he seems to believe they might release something online. For now, we’ll have to wait and see if that’ll get released.

We’ll see if they actually will share anything from the project online, but it seems too early to tease anything. The only thing they might do is share the first logo for the project, similar to getting the Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse logo after they retitled the project. Still, it seems they are certainly moving full force with the project.

Kraven the Hunter is quite an interesting project, as it’s unclear how exactly they are building up their anti-Spider-Man team out of Morbius‘ post-credit sequence. He very likely won’t have a role in this film. So, it makes you wonder how they are trying to set up an anti-hero version of the Sinister Six that is still out to take down the webhead.
