Untitled ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Show Eyeing Production Start Next Month

The Mandalorian kickstarted the Disney+ era. It was quite the success and Disney didn’t waste time to announce multiple projects in the Star Wars galaxy. Just recently, we got an update on casting for the unnamed Cassian Andor project. Hell, we are even getting a new Star Wars Holiday Special on the streaming platform. One major project many are excited for was the announced Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Ewan McGregor is confirmed to return to the role, as it takes place eight years after Revenge of the Sith. In January, it was reported that the production was set on hold long before the pandemic hit. Rumors pointed to issues with the scripts that were going to be reworked. As a result, production was delayed indefinitely.

Well, looks like that wait is finally over. The site Making Star Wars has uncovered that there are plans to start production as early as next month. It seems that they are planning on using the train yard location in California. This has been used for many exterior shots for The Mandalorian in the past. They could be reusing the Tatooine materials filmed during the first season of the Disney+ show.

Their source does confirm that this doesn’t mean they will instantly jump into filming. This story takes place long before our favorite Mandalorian took a step in Tatooine so it was a very different place then. So, they will need to adapt the existing material to fit that timeline before Deborah Chow starts the actual filming. As she was involved with the previous show’s production, she can reuse this experience for Obi-Wan. Making Star Wars also points out that it is unsure how much will be shot in Southern California. Originally, plans seemed to indicate that they wanted to film in the U.K. but with the current situation this may be hindered. It will be good to keep an eye out if anything happens for the show next month.

Disney Confirms More Upcoming Blockbuster Films on Premier Access

A few days ago, Disney+ revealed their plans to release the upcoming live-action interpretation of Mulan through their streaming service rather than delay the film’s release date any further. The catch, however, is that in order to watch this film, users of the streaming platform would have to pay a $29.99 fee in order to watch this film, under a new brand Disney+ calls “Premier Access.”

MulanDisney’s “Mulan” will release on September 4th via Disney+’s offering of “Premier Access”

    Disney+ explains:

“Once you have Premier Access to Mulan, you can watch [the film] as many times as you want on any platform where Disney+ is available. Your access to Mulan will continue as long as you are an active Disney+ subscriber.” Following the announcement, Disney CEO Bob Chapek described the move as a “one-off” in a Disney’s Q3 FY20 Earnings Results Webcast, explaining that right now they’re “going to have a chance to learn from this and to see whether that [Premier Access] makes sense.”

Needless to say, the Premier Access offering has sparked some debate amongst some users of the platform, some believing it’s too high a price for a single film, while others (myself included), have been wondering about Premier Access’ potential for other films to be displayed utilizing this PVOD format, some examples being Disney’s Jungle Cruise and Marvel Studios’ Black Widow.

So I got to investigating and started working on a theory piece for the potential this service has and how Mulan’s release can affect the future of PVOD itself. Then, simply because I wanted to make sure I used all my options, I decided to just directly contact Disney+’s Help Center, via their live chat option and see if they could help out. And they certainly did.

ggggMy first Disney+ Live Help Chat Conversation with an agent.

In my first conversation with the Disney+ Agent, I asked about the Premier Access service, its pricing and if it was going to be a yearly subscription added to the one I already had or if it was a one time fee on a “film-by film” basis where one would pay the $29.99 fee for every film released via Premier Access. The agent replied with the following string of messages after he contacted his account specialist and left me on read for nearly 10 minutes. He confirmed that the $29.99 fee is just a one time fee, on top of our monthly/yearly subscription, that gives you access to Mulan and that “FOR NOW WE have Mulan, but when time goes by, the premier access WILL BE MORE UPDATED and more movies to watch.” This confirms that Disney does indeed have plans to premier other films via Premier Access, similar to what they’re doing with Mulan.

Now, rationally, I contacted the “Scooper Supreme known as Charles Murphy and I showed him what I had. We needed more proof. After all, the main purpose of an experiment is to show that if you obtained the same result once, then theoretically, if we do it over and over, we should get a similar result. So we tried 3 MORE TIMES. (I did it twice and Charles did it once.)

gdsMy second Disney+ Live Help Chat Conversation with a second agent.

The second agent was more focused on discussing Mulan but eventually answered my question and offered a similar response with a “guarantee…that Disney+ will offer more amazing movies” in regards to the Premier Access itself.

My third and last attempt was not as fruitful because the agent had kept referring me to this page. (Well someone gets a 1/5 in customer service). But it is important to note out that I managed to verify the page’s identity, and confirmed that it is a “Hero Content Page”, meaning the page linked above isn’t specifically just for Mulan, but that it can be updated with other film properties simply replacing the Mulan information and inserting another film in there.

Charles also attempted to get information on this, to make sure of the veracity of these comments and he was fruitful as well being told that while Mulan was the only film available “for now”, Premier Access could be used similarly in the future.

So, in a string of either complete naiveté on my part and literal sheer dumb luck, we managed to get a confirmation that Disney+ is indeed planning on using this PVOD service to push films out through their streaming platform. Yes, you’ll be paying an additional fee for each film ($29.99 does not get you access to all Premier Access films) but this resolves one of the biggest discussion points surrounding the platform since it was announced.

This gives fans an opportunity to see films that they were planning to see before the COVID-19 pandemic arose back in March, starting with Mulan as their first true test, and with 60.5 million subscribers on the platform already, I predict Premier Access has a very bright future ahead of it. So don’t be surprised if you get one of the following promos on your twitter feed or your email address.

  • Connecting Imaginary Dots: A Tale of Two Hawkeyes

Connecting Imaginary Dots: A Tale of Two Hawkeyes

Sadly, everything is still heavily delayed without any official update when we could expect the MCU’s first foray into Disney+. To build up some hype again, I watched the short documentary Expanding the Universe. It offered our first look at the future of Marvel Studios. While being mesmerized by the visuals to showcase the various shows, I was curious about some small statements about the shows. The short video gives us a brief rundown of last year’s SDCC panel. Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige invites the actors to the stage and talks about what you can expect from the shows. The segment on Hawkeye piqued my interest the most. A lot of focus since the event was set on the inspiration from Matt Fraction‘s amazing run and the introduction of Kate Bishop. What I somehow managed to forget was that Feige points out that we will explore Clint’s time as Ronin. It’s an interesting aspect of the character that wasn’t fully explored in Avengers: Endgame so it made sense to include. Yet, how does it connect to the strong focus set with the introduction of Kate Bishop? Let’s start connecting some of those imaginary dots on how the show may tackle this storyline.

    What We Know So Far

Let’s start off with what we know from Avengers: Endgame. Hawkeye spent many years killing criminals after he lost his family to the snap. It wasn’t until Natasha found him in Japan that his violent rage found its end. We don’t get much in-universe explanation on where this persona came from. Going by the Japanese origins of the name, it would point to him having been active in Japan for quite some time. This would be supported by the Yakuza recognizing him instantly. He also seems to speak Japanese fluently but this could also be due to his training with SHIELD. This is all the information we get on Ronin, as he returns to his original mantle once he rejoins the Avengers. Naturally, there is an entire story to tell that offers us a glimpse into his past.

    whoisroninendgame-1

If we look at the comics for a minute, Clint is only the second person to hold the title of Ronin. The mantle was originally carried by Maya Lopez, who is also known as Echo and has close ties to Daredevil. In the comics, she was adopted by the Kingpin after he killed her small-time criminal father. She started off as a villain to Daredevil before turning over a new leaf. This character is noteworthy as a casting call was sent out for a character that closely resembles Echo. The only thing missing was which show she would make an appearance in. Now, looking at the character’s history, Hawkeye would be fitting through the Ronin connection. The casting states that she would be between 18 to 20, so it’s uncertain if she will be in a flashback or the present day. There is a chance that the upcoming Disney+ series might tell the story with two potential protégés.

Now, the question remains how she would fit into the overarching story that seems to focus on Kate Bishop. While we got some visuals showing both of them, we barely know anything about the show. The only info we have is that it will be heavily inspired by Fraction‘s run. Bishop has an interesting history in the comics. She grew up with an estranged father, who worked with a villain named El Matador. After being saved by the Avengers, she was impressed by Hawkeye because he didn’t have any powers. She became part of the Young Avengers and inofficially took over his mantle. At the time, Clint was dead so it wasn’t until his revival that she would officially receive it. So, she was operating as Hawkeye without his involvement for some time before the actual “passing of the torch” even started.

    No Rest for the Archer

The clear goal of the Hawkeye series seems to focus on the passing of the torch. Let’s take the character’s comic origins and what we know to potentially put the story together. Clint Barton has tried to retire quite often throughout the MCU. All he wanted was a quiet life with his family on their farm. Somehow, destiny always arrived and pulled him back into the fold. So, the only way he can finally free himself of this responsibility is to pass it on to someone else. People wondered why they went the Kate Bishop route if we saw him training his oldest daughter how to use the bow. He most likely doesn’t want his daughter to go through this and keep her safe, especially after what happened in Endgame. So, he tries to at least break away from it one last time even if he knows that his luck will just get him dragged back in. To his dismay, he was exactly right about that.

    hawkeye-concept-art-03

Someone is using his Hawkeye moniker as a vigilante. As everyone assumes Clint is involved, he once again gets pulled back in when a small-time mafia starts attacking him. He gets his family to safety and has to briefly use an apartment to hide out in New York City. On a stakeout, he runs into the person using his moniker and the culprit that got him into this mess. Naturally, this turns out to be Kate Bishop, who wants to take over his mantle. He takes her under his wing, as they try to end the mafia’s career. They start to bond and he sees her as a daughter throughout the series. The tracksuit mafia starts getting taken down by a rival mafia throughout the series. This one is led by a young Maya Lopez under the guise of Ronin, who is the adoptive daughter of the local kingpin.

    Echo from the Past

Clint sees the name as a call for him to repent. His killing spree as Ronin still haunts him to this day. To some extend, he always knew that someone would try to take their revenge on him. What unfolds, is a last-ditch effort for him to make up for his mistakes and maybe even save the young woman from this life of crime. His own past as an influence, he does his best to make things right. Yet, Lopez doesn’t wear the Ronin mask as a sign of revenge but admiration. Little did she know that it was Clint that wore the mask of the killer she admired.

    _maya_card

There is, however, one person that is using his identity to take revenge. At least, that was the original plan. It was Kate’s father that was involved with one of Clint’s past mistakes. The mafia used her father’s warehouse as cover for their operations. Ronin killed them but was unable to save him. She blamed the man named Ronin for his death. Used her time to research carefully who he truly is before she stumbled upon his real identity. Yet, she couldn’t bring herself to do it anymore once she got to know Clint. He ends up passing on the mantle of Hawkeye to her while also giving Maya a second lease on life. That way, she can strive to echo the things he wasn’t able to do. Something that would stick with her as she continues her own journey once she meets another devil vigilante Finally, Clint could return home to his family with the weight of the Avengers off of his shoulder.

    Hawkeye’s Potential

This is just an idea of how they could be integrating the Ronin backstory into the overall narrative of Hawkeye. It would play on the concept of Hawkeye’s regret of his time as Ronin and the legacy it left behind. Through this, they can explore what it means to pass on the torch, especially when it happens without your direct influence. It would allow for a parallel between Kate and Maya, as two people affected by the same person’s actions. Ronin and Hawkeye are two sides of the same coin. This way, Clint is forced to face both versions of his past. Especially with Kate, he also comes to understand his imperfections.

There are other directions they could take this story. They could also go down the route that Kate and Maya are rivals trying to be picked as Clint’s successor. I also didn’t touch upon exploring the origin of Ronin, which could be a factor in the story. They could even make some connections between Hawkeye’s story and Daredevil to expand the mythology. If this story takes place in New York City, they could tease his existence without being forced to explore it. There are also rumors of Clint’s brother Trickshot making an appearance. Perhaps the Ronin character is connected to his time with the circus. Maybe they spent a lot of time in Japan before he was found by SHIELD. Speaking of, we don’t know if his history with the spy organization will also play a key factor in this story. Whatever they have planned, we can’t wait to see what direction they will take when it is released on Disney+.

  • Wunmi Mosaku, the Time Variance Authority and ‘LOKI’

Wunmi Mosaku, the Time Variance Authority and ‘LOKI’

If you’ve never read an installment of Connecting Imaginary Dots, allow me to explain the idea. Connecting Imaginary Dots was the title I came up with for my speculation pieces when I was writing at MCU Exchange. These types of pieces basically allow me to unload a bunch of junk that’s circulating in my brain in a way that should never be confused for things I actually expect to happen. I basically take a bunch of facts that are almost always entirely unrelated and do my best to connect the dots with by stretching my imagination. In the past these types of pieces have resulted in me theorizing that the Spider-Man sequel which became Far From Home might end up being a team-up outing of Spidey and Hulk in the Savage Land; however, I also wrote one theorizing that Sterling K. Brown would be playing the father of Erik Killmonger in Black Panther LOOOOOONG before anyone else was considering it and one in which I theorized that Annette Bening was actually Mar-Vell when everyone else still thought Jude Law was playing the character. The bottom line is this: these are fun spec pieces that allow me to just be a fan. With that out of the way…

You're going to see a lot more of actress Wunmi Mosaku | Daily ...

We are already aware that the Disney Plus Marvel Studios streaming series Loki will introduce the Time Variance Authority (TVA) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Through set photos published by Just Jared back in March, we know that actress Wunmi Mosaku will be working with the TVA in some capacity. Additionally, according to IMDB (and yes I am well aware that it cannot always be counted on for legitimate information), a stunt woman worked 3 episodes as a stunt double for a character called simply “B15.” Taken independently, these are some interesting tidbits but that’s not what we do here and that’s not why these features are called “Connecting Imaginary Dots”, so here it goes…

After waking from a fever dream the other night, I decided that the dots here lead to the conclusion that Wunmi Mosaku will be playing a TVA Chronomonitor (though I’m not sure they’ll be using that title in Loki) labeled B15. For those rightly asking “What in theeeee hell is a Chronomonitor?”, here’s what you need to know. The massive halls of the TVA headquarters (The Halls of Chronometry) are filled with employees known as Chronomonitors, beings who are responsible for monitoring divergent timelines. In the comics, Chronomonitors are created on every occasion where a timeline “bifurcates” and it becomes their duty to monitor said timeline. These monitors even have the power/authority/responsibility to further split their timeline should events take place that they deem important enough to create another divergent timeline; of course such an act would also create an opening for another Chronomonitor, so you can imagine there are quite a lot of them…and there are, as you can see in the pictures below. When Chronomonitors locate disruptive entities within their timelines, they alert the Minutemen (the TVA’s time cops) to clean up the mess. We know the Minutemen are appearing in Loki so having the Chronomonitors makes sense as well (it’s also entirely possible that Marvel Studios has combined the two types of characters in an effort to simplify what might be a confusing plot device in the first place). Given the size of the role (at least 3 episodes), I’d say this particular Chronomonitor is pretty important. My guess here is that Mosaku’s Chronomonitor has been tasked with monitoring the bifurcation that occurred when Hulk smashed Tony’s face after descending the stairs, allowing the Tesseract to end up in Loki’s possession.

Chronomonitors are not named, but given a “letter-number” label, so B15 is right in line with how one might refer to them in the comics or in the Loki series. Now in all honesty, there’s not anywhere near enough evidence here to truly make claim that Mosaku is playing B15 and it’s unclear if any other Chronomonitors will be playing a role as large as Mosaku’s. That begs the question just how many Chronomonitors are we going to see in Loki which would be a direct result of just how much mischief the Prince of Lies can cause. We’ll find out when Loki hits Disney Plus in 2021!

Report: ‘MS. MARVEL’ Looking to Cast Some Key Roles

A new report from the Illuminerdi indicates that Ms. Marvel, one of several planned streaming series in the works from Marvel Studios over at Disney Plus, is on the lookout for a couple of key characters from Kamala Khan’s inner circle. Unsurprisingly, it looks like the series will feature Kamala’s brother, Amir, and one of her best friends, Nakia.

According to the report, Marvel Studios trusted casting director, Sarah Finn, is looking to cast a Pakistani male, mid-to-late 20s, to play a “wiser older brother” and an actress, 16-20, of Turkish, Moroccan or Arab descent as a “woke, popular and smart” student activist. Fans of the comics will recognize those character as Amir and Nakia, two characters central to Kamala’s journey in the comics.

Report: Hailee Steinfeld is Kate Bishop

She’s everyone’s first choice and now, despite what seemed like mounting evidence to the contrary, Hailee Steinfeld has reportedly crossed the necessary “I”s and dotted the necessary “T”s and will portray Kate Bishop in the upcoming Disney Plus streaming series Hawkeye.

The Illuminerdi broke the news of Steinfeld finally agreeing to the role (news that was later given a 100% confirmation seal of approval by MCU Cosmic) just about a week after members of Disney Insider mentioned that the actress was no longer in contention. However, MCU Cosmic, who was privy information about the moments leading up to Steinfeld’s signing of her contract, expects a trade announcement might come shortly.

The Illuminerdi’s report also indicated that Hawkeye, originally set to start production in late-September, is now looking at an October start date with filming expected to wrap in March. If all things stay on track, we should see Hawkeye hit Disney Plus as early as next August.

‘HAWKEYE’ Series Searching for The Clown

A new report from The Illuminerdi indicates that an interesting and unexpected villain might play a major role in Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series Hawkeye. According to the report, a new cast listing may point to Kazimierz Kazimierczak, a merc known as the Clown, squaring off with the Hawkeyes.

First appearing in Matt Fraction and David Aja’s acclaimed Hawkeye run, Kazi is a Polish mercenary who was hired by the ongoing antagonists of the series, the Tracksuit Draculas, a European mafia group that made things tough for Clint and his neighbors in their apartment complex. The casting breakdown calls for an Easter European male in his 20s-early 30s to play a character code named ‘Arek.’ The character is reportedly a series regular, set to appear in 5 of 6 episodes.

Hawkeye is set to begin filming this Fall.

    ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’

    Premiere: December 17, 2027

Announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Avengers: Secret Wars may well prove to be Marvel Studios’ most ambitious project ever. Set to conclude not only Phase 6 of the MCU but also the entirety of the Multiverse Saga, it’s easy to refer back to the tagline promoting the 2015 comic event: “When everything ends, there is only Secret Wars.”

Avengers: Secret Wars ended up being of the Marvel feature films affected by an October 2022 shift in release dates. It moved from its initial November 2025 slot to May 1, 2026. As part of a total slate shift by Marvel Studios, the film was once again moved, this time to May 7, 2027.

During Marvel Studios Hall H panel at SDCC ’24, Kevin Feige introduced Anthony and Joe Russo as the directors of Avengers: Secret Wars.

In May 2025, the film’s release date was moved to December 17, 2027.

And so being, a big confrontation with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is, like their previous antagonist Thanos, inevitable. As the Multiverse Saga develops over the course of the next couple of years, Avengers: Kang Dynasty may not only serve as the culmination of Kang’s presence in the MCU but also set things up for the following Avengers entry, due to be released six months afterward.

Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringswas announced as the director just three days after the feature film was announced. In late 2023, as part of a total creative overhaul, Cretton left the project and writer Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Avengers: Secret Wars) took over writing duties. Before the end of 2023, Marvel Studios fired actor Jonathan Majors after he was found guilty of assault and harassment. The studio is currently looking to recast the character.

On February 21, 2024, THR reported that in the wake of Majors’ legal troubles and the poor response to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, the studio was dropping the subtitle The Kang Dynasty and looking to rename the film.

As part of their SDCC ’24 presentation, Marvel Studios announced that the fifth Avengers film was set to be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and had been retitled Avengers: Doomsday. Infinity Saga star Robert Downey Jr. is set to play Doctor Doom.

  • ‘MS. MARVEL’ Production Update

    ‘MS. MARVEL’ Production Update

Now more than ever, production dates seem to be “best guesses” rather than chiseled in concrete but, as we’ve seen recently in the case of Uncharted, things can get back underway and “on time” in this new normal. While we wait for Marvel Studios to resume production on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, WandaVision and Loki, we now have something new to look forward to as the studio has set a NEW start date (verified by Discussing Film) for Ms. Marvel. As of this week, Marvel Studios plans to roll cameras in Atlanta on the streaming series from November through March of 2021!

Celebrate 50 issues of Kamala Khan in June's “Ms. Marvel” #31 ...

This new, November start date replaces what was originally supposed to be an August start. Not only does it track with other information we’ve been hearing (such as the studio beginning to zero in on their Kamala Khan) but it also might give us some insight into some other aspects of production. If Marvel Studios is looking to get Ms. Marvel started in November, that might mean that, as of now, that’s when they expect to have studios space open once production on Loki wraps in Atlanta. Additionally, we might deduce that if production on Ms. Marvel is kicking off about 3 months later than originally expected that we could, potentially, see Hawkeye, originally scheduled for a September start, get in front of cameras before the end of 2020 as well!

Keep in mind there are still a lot of obstacles to clear before any productions get underway, but we can tentatively start piecing things together here under the assumption that things get running again soon. Before I go, I’ll leave you with this incomplete tidbit as to why Marvel Studios is keen on casting Kamala Khan sooner than later even though her series isn’t set to film until November: Ms. Marvel won’t be the first time we meet Kamala Khan. If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll already know why.
