    ‘WANDAVISION’: Vision’s ‘Secret Identity’

Right now, we’re less than 2 months away from the debut of WandaVision (2021) on Disney+. I’m excited, you’re excited, we’re all excited. While working on my next Theory Thursday article, I was looking over some of the promo images from Entertainment Weekly and found something particularly interesting in one of them.

(L-R): Kathryn Hahn as Agnes, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany as Vision in Marvel Studios’ WANDAVISION. Photo by Chuck Zlotnick. ©Marvel Studios 2020. All Rights Reserved.

Anything interesting catch your attention (Besides the pineapple?) No? Let’s take a closer look then.

At the bottom right of the original image, you’ll notice Vision’s briefcase and the initials “T.D.”, engraved on top.

Now, I did my research on the briefcase and question found this Samsonite model.

A nearly exact model, except without the T.D. initials on top. Meaning that if this suitcase belongs to Vision, and he has those initials engraved onto the briefcase, it’s safe to assume that Vision has taken up a new alias if both he and Wanda are trying to live out their suburban lives undercover, without any ties to their previous lives. Vision in the comics is definitely no stranger to aliases in the comics. His most notable alias was Victor Shade.

SO, IF HE’S WEARING A DISGUISE AND HE HAS A NEW ALIAS, THEN WHAT DOES “T.D.” STAND FOR?

T.D. could mean many different names and it’s definitely not something ripped directly from the comics, though I believe I’ve zoned in on the possible first name for Vision’s new alias:

Why Thomas (Tom) D. you ask? Well, because of multiple connections Vision has to people with that name.

    Character Co-Creator: Roy Thomas

Roy Thomas is a comic book legend, mainly for being Stan Lee’s first successor as editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics and is known for co-creating characters such as Vision, Ultron, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), etc. One could assume that the name pays homage to the man who created the character, but that’s not all.

    Comic Book Writer: Tom King

Tom King wrote one of the most fascinating stories about Vision in his comic series named after the character. And we know that the limited series will draw inspiration from King’s run, along with several other comic runs. So it could also be seen from the perspective of paying homage to a fantastic writer. And last but not least…

    Thomas Shepherd aka Speed

The reincarnated son of Wanda and Vision. We know that the “new” Maximoff twins are bound to appear in the show and most parents across multiple time periods tend to name their sons after the father, so it isn’t that far of a leap in logic to think that it’s possible that perhaps Vision being named Tom or Thomas could be a reference to his future “soon-to-be born-son” Tommy. Bit of a bootstrap paradox for you there. (Look it up).

  • ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon M. Chu Set to Direct Live-Action ‘Lilo and Stitch’

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon M. Chu Set to Direct Live-Action ‘Lilo and Stitch’

Here’s an interesting surprise. It looks like Disney is not quite done with their cash cow live-action adaptations and has already set their eyes on the next project. They aim to adapt the Hawaiian story of Lilo & Stitch into live-action, which was originally going to be featured on Disney+. It is uncertain if things have changed but they have tapped Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu to tackle the project. Producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback are set to return after their success with the Aladdin adaption into live-action. They currently do not have a writer set for the project. Mike Van Waes has drafted the version that was initially titled Stitch for Disney+, which was never officially greenlit.

The original story by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders focused on a young girl named Lilo, who met the alien creature Stitch. He was created in a lab as the perfect creation of destruction. His time in Hawaii, however, teaches him about the importance of Ohana. The little alien was hellbent on protecting his newfound home from those that are trying to recapture him once more. Chu is a fantastic director to tackle this project. It also is his second project with Disney, as he is also involved with the upcoming Lucasfilm Willow project. These live-action adaptations of beloved animated classics haven’t gotten the best reception, so maybe this film can break the curse.

  • Disney+ Surpasses Expectations with 73 Million Subscribers

Disney+ Surpasses Expectations with 73 Million Subscribers

It hasn’t been an easy year for any company. The pandemic has strongly influenced consumer behaviors and forced many companies to remain closed. Disney was no exception, as they struggled with the closing of their parks and theaters locking down. They had to postpone many of their biggest film releases. Black Widow was pushed back by an entire year as they struggled to figure out if they should focus on their streaming service. After a trial run with Mulan, it seemed like they were hoping to return to theatres. Even Pixar’s next entry Soul will be released for free on the service next month.

While they haven’t been able to make money at the Box Office, it looks like their investment with Disney+ has been a success. Their forecast was to reach between 60 to 90 million subscribers by 2024. They have reached that first threshold within the first nine months. Now, they already passed 73 million within the first 11 months.

The service makes use of a large part of Disney’s vault. The company had a list of shows entering production after The Mandalorian kicked-off the streaming service’s launch. Sadly, the pandemic delayed most of their high-profile releases, so most releases were for younger audiences. With the recent announcement of Marvel Studios’ first show WandaVision eyeing January, it could see another boost in subscribers by then. It’ll be interesting to see how fast this service grows to compete with Netflix’s 195 million users.

  • Schrödingers’ Khonshu: More Myth Than Moon Knight’s God

Schrödingers’ Khonshu: More Myth Than Moon Knight’s God

Moon Knight is a fascinating character and a great addition to Marvel Studios’ Disney+ line-up. Initially, he was Marvel’s answer to Batman. He even had moon-shaped versions of the Batarangs. Yet, the character grew into his own as time went on. Marc Spector is commonly known for having a Dissociative Identity Disorder, so he started to adopt a variety of names and identities over the years. One of his most recent additions was the detective, Mr. Knight. The most iconic aspect of Moon Knight is also his relationship with a God known as Khonshu. In a mission in Egypt as a mercenary, he gets betrayed by his employer Raul Bushman. Left for dead, an Egyptian God gave him a new lease on life. He would, later on, believe that this encounter was nothing more than an illusion. Yet, the Moon God’s influences stuck with him in his designs. His disorder also made him an unreliable narrator, so it was uncertain for quite some time if he was real. As the show is slowly starting production, it is unclear if Khonshu is an actual character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Well, that was until a report by The Direct was pointing to the addition of four Egyptian characters. This casting is interesting if you consider that Moon Knight’s main base of operation in New York City. One character’s definition is as a female lead. So, they will play somewhat of an essential role in the series of some kind. Now, this may tease that Khonshu’s past is a massive part of the story. The hiring of Mohamed Diab also highlights that the characters’ Egyptian heritage will have some influence, so it makes sense to explore this mystical aspect of the MCU. Thor is proof that Gods do exist, so this would allow us to get another perspective on one of the many undiscovered corners of the MCU.

Yet, Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige toyed a bit with audiences when he announced the show initially. He said that Marc might be crazy, which opens a lot of questions. Khonshu, as a character, adds a lot of depth to this universe, so it would be a waste for him not to exist. Yet, at the same time, they could use him as a red herring to make you question the sanity of Spector. If Khonshu exists, we will be learning about his history with the other Gods. It also allows us to uncover how their existence played into the MCU’s past. Plus, they can use that aspect to make you accept Khonshu exists in Spector’s view of the world before pulling the rug from under your feet. This aspect is what sells Moon Knight as a show. It isn’t as crazy as WandaVision‘s sitcom-based multiverse shenanigans, but it can screw with its audience. As I mentioned before, Marc is an unreliable narrator, so if he retells the story of Khonshu, there is a chance it is just all made-up in his head. It would also open up the possibility to see his already broken mind fall apart as he begs for a God for help that does not exist.

In the comics, Khonshu is very much a tangible existence. He even got into conflict with the Avengers, which ended up with him fighting Robbie Reye’s Ghost Rider and Black Panther. In Avengers Vol. 8 #37, he ended up losing and being apprehended by the team of heroes. Even if he exists in the comics, it doesn’t chain the series to do the same. He may be an illusion by Spector after seeing an idol of the lunar God shortly before he passed out. It’s a great way to play with expectations, especially as it allows the director to play around with some crazy visuals. I do hope we get the design from Moon Knight Vol. 7 that features him in a white suit with a bird skull instead of a head. It’s such an iconic visual that can also add a unique atmosphere to this show, as he may seem like just one of the many personalities. Yet, in his thirst for vengeance is manipulating Marc to follow a darker path. Right now, we have no idea as they could go either direction. We might get to meet a real Egyptian God, or just the remnants of a broken mind. Until Moon Knight releases on Disney+, he is Marvel Studios’ Schrödingers’ Cat.

  • Ten Years Later ‘The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ Is Still Among the Best

Ten Years Later ‘The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ Is Still Among the Best

How has it already been ten years? In 2010, Disney XD released the series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. At the time, I only had a passing knowledge of comics. It was 2008’s Iron Man that made me interested in catching up on almost 70 years of history at the time. I thought I managed to get a good look at the mythology this franchise has set up. Man, I was so wrong. EMH dives into every single facet that Marvel has to offer. The show interweaves so many different storylines based on unique properties and makes it feel cohesive. Every member of the team is given an arc throughout the show that also ties into the overarching plot. It is still tough to chew that this show was canceled after its second season. As today is its tenth anniversary, It seems like the perfect time to revisit this iconic Marvel series.

And There Came a Day Unlike Any Other

I binged the entire show on Disney+ to return to that feeling when I first saw it. It is amazing to think about how well this show holds up after ten years. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe built up its various Avengers members, this show just throws you straight in. The first two episodes are quite the rush now that I rewatched it. There isn’t any hand-holding here, they throw you into this show without any warning. If you have no idea who any of these characters are, you are going to have to do some research. We get introduced to the Absorbing Man, Blizzard, Mad Thinker, King Cobra, the Wrecking Crew and so many more. Just thinking back, I had no idea who most of these characters were. It’s an incredible balance this show does throughout its run by understanding what characters need an introduction. Do we really need an origin story for the Wrecking Crew? No, let’s focus more on Graviton who serves as the main threat.

Speaking of, this show made me a huge fan of the character. He may be a minor villain but something about his powers was the perfect choice to bring the Avengers together. It was the reason I wanted Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to follow through with their tease of the character. His connection to S.H.I.E.L.D. added a great deal of intrigue that would perpetuate throughout the series. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes doesn’t try to shove every single upcoming plotline in this two-parter. Its focus is on introducing people to the diversity of villains, setting up the jailbreak, and the Avengers coming together. Small hints are set but they are only really built on throughout the seasons.

    When Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

After a fantastic opening, it kind of goes a strange direction. We get the Avengers together and quickly rush through their characters. Instead of continuing from that point, it takes a step back. We return to the time before the events of ‘The Breakout’. This was my first time experiencing an out-of-order airing on television. Chronologically, ‘Iron Man is Born’ is the first episode of the show. At the time, this was one hell of whiplash because the events didn’t match up. Even Disney+ still has it in the wrong airing order. As you noticed though, the opening two-parter still works on its own. It’s such a strange aspect that Disney XD at the time aired it this way. It actually is even crazier that Disney+ still does not include it in chronological order. Somehow that just became an aspect of the show to this day.

The actual continuation is the episode ‘A Little Assembly Required’ that shows that these Avengers don’t get along instantly. It seems a tradition at this point that heroes always get into fights when they start teams. this episodes kind of highlights the advantage and disadvantage of having so many characters. This version of the Hulk is my favorite interpretation. He isn’t just a rage monster but actually is quite intelligent but still loves fighting. As they introduce him as this walking time bomb he tends to disappear for some time during specific arcs. They do this with a lot of recurring characters. It’s even showcased in the intro as it only shows the members relevant to the episode. Of course, this is great to keep an overview of the arcs but it forces them into making up excuses for others to “disappear”. A revolving door of characters works for the show, just sometimes it feels like the confrontations are forced to make sure to even the odds.

Found Themselves United Against a Common Threat

Still, this is a show about Avengers. We get so many fantastic adaptations of classic storylines. They are all interwoven throughout episodes that have a completely different focus. It all feels natural and is the advantage of long-form storytelling. An experiment creates Wonder Man that also introduces us to M.O.D.O.K. He briefly mentions they are working on a weapon for HYDRA. Ant-Man gets attacked by Klaue, who is helping Man-Ape that took over Wakanda. We also have Enchantress manipulating iconic villains to do her bidding that ends up forming the Masters of Evil. We briefly get introduced to Carol Danvers and Mar-Vell before the second season builds up the Kree-Skrull War. In just two seasons, we probably explore every aspect the Marvel universe has to offer.

Sadly, no matter how great the show was, it didn’t get renewed for a third season. It was replaced by a show called Avengers Assemble. The goal was that this show connected to Ultimate Spider-Man but it was nowhere near the same quality. Alongside Spectacular Spider-Man, this is one of Marvel’s best adaptations of their comics. It is a waste it was canceled in its prime but it did have a great ending. Every hero unites against a common threat like no other. Galactus has come to devour the world and it is up to all our favorite heroes to take them down. It is the perfect finale for this show even if there was so much more potential. Funny enough, Disney+ once again includes it out of order, as the 15th episode ‘Powerless’ is listed after the finale ‘Avengers Assemble!’ Even out of order, this show is an absolute gem. I believe it taught the Marvel Cinematic Universe a few lessons as it continued after the show aired its final episode.

  • Disney Eyeing a New Release Date for ‘BLACK WIDOW’

Disney Eyeing a New Release Date for ‘BLACK WIDOW’

It has come. The moment most of us probably dreaded. Warner Bros. already delayed the release for Wonder Woman 1984. It’s generally looking grim for any releases in October after Tenet barely scraped by in cinemas. We knew that this would signify more delays in the near future. Now, it looks like Marvel Studios and Disney are contemplating delaying Black Widow according to Variety. They do not add what release date they might be considering for now.

To some degree, November releases seemed still pretty safe for now but that might change soon. 2020 could be the first time we’ve had an entire year without a single Marvel Cinematic Universe entry since 2009. WW84 is still slated to release in December, a week after WB’s other tentpole film Dune is slated to air but even those release dates are questionable for now.

Keep in mind, Variety has no official confirmation. They add that they got no comment from a Disney spokesperson. If Disney decides to stick to an only in theaters release for Black Widow, it’s definitely getting delayed. Tenet barely managed a $200 million worldwide, so most studios are going to have to expect a weak Box Office performance for some time. Even if they postpone it to 2021, that year is filled to the brim with releases. They will end up cannibalizing each other so they might not even break-even after the delay.

Disney’s best option is to minimize costs through a direct income. They already tested it out with Mulan on Disney+. They don’t have to share the income and can draw in additional subscribers. It may be the best investment long-term. Even if they do go the Premium Access route, they may delay it to make sure they can probably market the film’s release. The article also states they are planning to release Soul on Disney+, so it seems quite likely.

  • Warner Bros. & Sony’s “Only in Theaters” Strategy Facing a Digital Revolution

Warner Bros. & Sony’s “Only in Theaters” Strategy Facing a Digital Revolution

2020 hasn’t been kind to anyone. COVID has made the life of many difficult and halted many prominent industries. The film industry has certainly been hit hard. Not only have all their productions been halted, but they also can’t air any of their finished films. Most tentpole productions have budgets that go beyond the $200 million mark. Every release past March was postponed either until the fourth quarter or even for a full year into 2021. September was the month that everything should change. Cinemas were slowly opening again. Tenet was promised to reignite the Box Office again.

Sadly, it brought in just $20 million and is barely scraping by in the States. We’ve already seen the results of this underperformance. Now, Warner Bros. has postponed Wonder Woman 1984 to December. This is just a week after Dune premieres which would cannibalize their own production. Sony is deciding to wait for COVID to be a thing of the past, which is still unknown. On the other hand, Disney is testing the waters with a brand new Premium Access option on its streaming service. Universal was the one that kickstarted a digital revolution by releasing films on video-on-demand.

    Delaying the Inevitable

It’s more than just a question of time at this point. Even as cinemas open, people will be a bit cautious about returning to a cramped dark space. Even countries that reopened cinemas are now changing direction. Here in Austria, you have to wear a mask as of next month while watching a film. This state-mandated rule will just encourage people to stay home and not take the risk. There is the discussion point at what point can one even consider it to be “safe” to return to cinemas. Sony’s strategy could drag out well into 2021. This could go as far as delay the third Spider-Man‘s December release. Warner Bros. might also go mad by constantly delaying their productions without an end in sight.

Production budgets are borrowed money. The longer they drag out the releases, the more expensive it might become. Most 2020 productions will have to take some loss into account. We won’t be seeing any record-breaking releases anytime soon. In the end, Universal and Disney might be on track for the best strategy right now. Smaller production companies also combined physical and digital releases at this point so they don’t have to market each delay. Marketing budgets would continue to grow as they’d have to rework every trailer. At this point, it is all about cost minimization. Even if 2021 opens up the floodgates, it will be so packed with new productions they will cannibalize each other. There is a good chance, film productions won’t recover until 2022.

    Facing a Digital Future

AMC already had issues with Universal’s strategy by banning them temporarily from cinemas. People criticized Disney+’s pricing for Mulan which was around $30. If you compare it to the $20 rental fee for Bill & Ted Face the Music, it’s surprisingly reasonable. Plus, Disney+ focuses its marketing towards families, so a four-headed family gets off pretty cheap than paying upwards of $40 for tickets. Plus, they can save money by avoiding the concession prices. For some, the price isn’t that bad. Disney might not just be able to cover costs but even turn in a profit. It not only boosts their subscription numbers but also makes up for the Box Office loss it would’ve faced otherwise. We can expect films like Black Widow to be added to Disney+. If you are interested in a deeper analysis to check out Edward’s analysis by clicking here.

Warner Bros. and Sony are simply postponing the inevitable. When we were discussing the implications of the WW84 delay, Charles made the good point that Disney might be able to dominate the market. They would be the only company to make their tentpole releases available to everyone without any competition. As such, they don’t have to worry about cannibalization. Even as AMC tries to lawyer up against these strategies, it’s the only option to keep the industry alive. If production companies can’t cover their costs, there won’t be any films to show in empty theatres. Believe me, I would want nothing more than to return to a cinema again but it’s still a massive risk. Right now, Disney and Universal have a better strategy and it wouldn’t be surprising for the others to follow suit. From this perspective, Sony and Warner Bros. are going to face a very rough 2021.

  • ‘Mulan’ Premiere Access Only Lasts Until December

‘Mulan’ Premiere Access Only Lasts Until December

Hard to believe that Mulan was originally going to air back in April. After all this time, the film will finally premiere on Disney+ next week. This time, however, it will only be available through the streaming services’ new add-on titled Premier Access. Anyone with an account can access the film but only if they pay an additional fee. It was promised that this wasn’t just going to be a rental but you would have access to it as long as you have your subscription. As such, we all assumed that it wouldn’t be made available on Disney+ for quite some time. Looks like our assumptions were wrong, as on European accounts the film was updated with a rather interesting tidbit.

    mulan

As you can see, it clearly states that the film will be made available by December 4th for all Disney+ subscribers. This is huge, as it means that what you pay is to so you can see it early. Now it makes sense why Disney was so keen on confirming it wasn’t a rental and you’d have access to it as long as you are a subscriber. I mean, most of us expected the film to be made available at some point in the future. We compared this to other services internationally and there is no sight of it in the U.S. So far, this only seems to be confirmed for Europe.

Still, it is a surprise that it would premiere anytime this year. You’d think they’d try to get as many people to give Premier Access a try instead of knowing they can just wait a little bit longer. Plus, they have to make up for the lost Box Office numbers they would’ve made normally with a release in the cinema. This is an intriguing move which could also be a test to see if they can make use of this new function in the future. Instead of relying on other VOD services, they can offer an early access to recent films before rolling them out on the platform. It is also interesting to note that the recently released “one-week” video does not include this information. There is a good chance this was added only recently and won’t be actively advertised.

Alongside this update, we also got a look at brand new posters to highlight the film’s cast. Each one also includes the Premier Access branding for Disney+. No sign about it being available by December here either.

  • Kelly Marie Tran Joins Disney’s ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’

Kelly Marie Tran Joins Disney’s ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’

Disney’s next major animated film Raya and the Last Dragon sounded promising. The film is currently set to release on March 12th, 2021. It will explore the kingdom of Kumandra. The visuals will take inspiration from Southeast Asia. Awkwafina is set to star as Sisu, a dragon trapped in a human body. They will set out to restore her powers and dragon-form. It sounds like an intriguing premise. The Asian-inspiration also could offer some unique visuals.

Looks like a lot has happened since the original announcement. Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada have taken over directing duties.  Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins remained listed as co-directors. She Kills Monsters‘ Qui Nguyen has been added as a screenwriter alongside Adele Lin. Not only that but Star Wars’ Kelly Marie Tran has officially replaced Cassie Steele as the voice of Raya. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ CCO Jennifer Lee offered the following statement to these changes.

As filmmakers, Don and Carlos bring a combination of animation know-how and emotional storytelling to Raya and the Last Dragon, bringing our fantasy adventure to surprising, original, and dynamic heights. They both saw the potential for this film and had a strong vision for the story, especially for our lead character, played by the wonderfully talented Kelly Marie Tran. And no small feat, directors Don and Carlos, writers Qui and Adele, and the entire crew of 400 Disney Animation artists are making this film together, while separated and working from home

Disney also shared a first good look at Raja and her companion Tuk Tuk fully rendered.

    Raya-and-the-Last-Dragon-720x300

These changes aren’t unusual for animated pictures. Also, they were hit by the pandemic just as production was starting. A lot of their work is being done remotely. It is uncertain how involved the original directors still will be. With the March release date, they have quite a lot of work ahead of them. Especially if they make quite a few changes. This will be Disney Animation’s first Southeast Asian inspired story. The addition of Tran also makes her their first Southeast Asian lead and cannot wait to see what she brings to the role.
