Some time ago, we learned that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness started another round of additional photography to reshoot some elements of the film. They were described as “extensive” but outside of rumors that it may be to add some more cameos and shoot sequences that weren’t possible due to COVID. There were hints they were nearing an end back in December, but it turns out the reshoots were still ongoing uup until recently.
In a new profile by Deadline they’ve revealed that the reshoots ended this weekend, which means they’ve now fully entered the post-production process. With the film still eyeing its May release, there’s enough time for them to focus on development. Of course, the process isn’t new for Marvel Studios or any production company in the industry nowadays, which directors have praised due to it ensuring they can make necessary tweaks.
It’ll be interesting to see how much Multiverse of Madness added as a result of these reshoots. There were concerns that more cameos could take away from the film’s central storyline, but Spider-Man: No Way Home proved that it is possible to strike a good balance with a central story and crowd-pleasing appearances. Of course with a story that takes place in the multiverse, it would be a shame not to embrace those kinds of shenanigans.
The Spider-Man: No Way Home runtime was already filled to the brim with cool characters and surprise appearances, but it looks like the movie originally had one more trick up its sleeve. A batch of brand new concept art for the wildly successful Spider-Man film has found its way online, and it reveals that Xochitl Gomez’ America Chavez was initially supposed to make a big appearance. The art, from artist Maciej Kuciara, features Chavez surrounded by Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and his friends, in what looks like a potentially pivotal moment in the story.

When Marvel Studios first announced its Phase 4 schedule, No Way Home was set to release after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. A series of delays changed things up and it’s then likely that Chavez was removed from the spider-flick in order to make her debut in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. It’s unknown what role she was to play in Spider-Man’s story, but America’s ability to travel between dimensions might have been a good reason to get her involved.
Writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers recently dropped the news that a different character was originally intended to introduce Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to the MCU. Perhaps America was supposed to appear and help Peter get the other Spider-Men to help him, instead of Ned gaining magical abilities. Also of note, it appears Flash Thompson and Betty Brant were at one point more involved with the action of the story, as they are featured prominently with the other protagonists in the image.
Marvel Studios’ foray into the cinematic multiverse will have its biggest showcase yet with the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and everyone’s favorite Sorcerer Supreme will be along for the ride. I refer, of course, to the great and powerful Wong, who was revealed as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest head wizard during the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The character, portrayed by Benedict Wong, has been known to be a part of Multiverse of Madness for some time, but fans are only now just getting a good official look at the hero through some recently released promotional art. Wong looks more or less the same as we’re accustomed to seeing him, with perhaps a few minor changes that include a fresh haircut.

Last we saw the Sorcerer Supreme, he was warning Benedict Cumberbatch‘s Dr. Stephen Strange of the dangers of casting a reality-altering spell. He’ll likely be unhappy with the results of Strange’s experiment when we see him next. Wong has become an unexpected bind for the MCU, appearing in multiple projects over the last year alone. Fans were delighted to see him pop up in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as an opponent and teacher for Tim Roth‘s Abomination, before bringing Shang-Chi himself into the world of The Avengers. It’s still unknown where that plot point will lead, but it does seem as though Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios have bigger plans for Wong than anyone would have expected.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi, arrives in theaters on May 6, 2022.
There’s been a lot of speculation surrounding who the main antagonist will be in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The first teaser trailer, which dropped as a post-credit sequence for Spider-Man: No Way Home, hinted at Strange being his own worst enemy. Yet, we also got a glimpse at a familiar creature from Marvel Comics history. The great Shuma-Gorath appeared with his classic green tentacle design, but it turns out it’s a creature known as “Gargantos.” The latest merchandise dropped and offered a closer look at his design, and he looks exactly like Gorath. So, why the change?
At face value, we can assume that they simply updated Gargantos’ design. It actually had closer ties to Namor than Doctor Strange in the comics, which is why it was a bit confusing when the name first popped up in July. It was revealed that Yenifer Molina will voice the role and outside of some rumors, there never was an official confirmation of Gorath’s inclusion. Yet, the design is copied from Gorath’s design from the comics. As such, it seems more like it’s the same character with a new name. There is the distinct possibility that the character was renamed due to the rights issues surrounding the name “Shuma-Gorath.”
While the Marvel character first appeared in a 1973 issue of Marvel Premiere #10, the name was first used in a short story titled “The Curse of the Golden Skull” by Robert E. Howard. As such, Marvel doesn’t technically own the rights to the name and may have chosen to rename him to avoid legal disputes. It’s a shame given how Lovecraftian the original sounds in comparison, but it’s not the first time they’ve done this. Especially with the character being heavily used in marketing, they might want to avoid any legal issues of using his name.
There is one element that might still speak in favor of Shuma-Gorath appearing in the film as a separate character. When you look back at the casting, Molina is listed as “Gargantos 2,” which would imply there are multiple versions of the character. While the inclusion of a number seems meaningless at first, it may be our first clear indicator that there’s more to Gargantos than meets the eyes. If there is indeed more than one version of this monster, it may be a hint that this isn’t just a singular entity.
So, while they may still avoid the name of Shuma-Gorath, there are hints that there’s more to Gargantos. He does seem small for a multiversal enemy with the name inspired by “gargantuan.” Though the name is fitting for a being wanting to take over the entire multiverse. Strange’s villains tend to be larger than life and it wouldn’t be too surprising that the being is simply an off-spring of something much larger, maybe even ethereal. Dormammu only had a physical form to interact with the infiltrator of his Dark Dimension. So, perhaps at the end of the multiverse, Strange will come face-to-face with its true form. We’ll know more once the film releases in May.
If you somehow missed it, you can check out the film’s first trailer here:
The upcoming new entry in the ever-expanding multiverse storyline of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse is only a few more months away. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will further expand our understanding of Marvel Studios’ venture that started in Loki, and we’ll see quite a few familiar faces returning. It’ll also act as a sequel to WandaVision, which introduced the world to Wanda’s transformation into the Scarlet Witch. While we got a good look at her costume in the series, the first merchandise has arrived that offers a glimpse at some of the tweaks and changes that were made to her design for the upcoming sequel.
NEW Scarlet Witch merch is now available on Amazon. 🛍
We’ve gotten quite a lot out of this merchandise dump, such as a closer look at Gargantos’ design, who may be one of the film’s main antagonists. Wanda is getting quite the focus in the merchandise, which may highlight just how large her role is. We don’t know yet how the post-credit sequence leads into the film, as the teaser did hint that it was Strange that recruited her. There’ll be a lot of moving pictures in the film and it’s exciting to see how it may turn out.
We’re only a few months away from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ releasing in theaters, as it continues from where Spider-Man: No Way Home left off our favorite sorcerer. His venture into the multiverse won’t be an easy one, as the next Marvel Studios entry takes inspiration from horror-themed cinema. As we inch closer, we also get more merchandise that offers a glimpse at what’s to come, and luckily @BRMarvelNews shared some of it on Twitter.
That’s not all, as @DrStrangeUpdate also shared a new look at a comic-inspired cover that showcases the battle between Strange, Chavez, and Wong against the Shuma Gorath look-a-like, Gargantos.
A long time ago, most of our theories pointed to Shuma-Gorath being the main antagonist in the upcoming film. The fact the character visually resembles the iconic tentacle monster may hint at there being more at play. Back in July, a casting leak hinted that there might be more than one which could mean that Gargantos are potentially offspring of the main monster. So, while it is being highlighted as the main antagonist, there might be more to this and they are distracting us from the film’s main threat.
We still have a few months until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally releases in theaters. After originally eyeing a March release, the film was pushed back to a May release but that isn’t stopping the toy releases to offer a glimpse of what we can expect from the upcoming sequel. We did get a look at a Strange Variant, only known as the Defender Strange, and now we also got one for Chiwetel Ejiofor‘s Mordo, which offers our best look yet at his new look in the upcoming film.

We still don’t know what his role in the story will be, but he seems a bit more sympathetic towards Strange even though he was focused on ending the existence of sorcerers. Perhaps he has gone down a different path, especially with the new dangers they oppose. Of course, there’s also the possibility that this version of the character is a Variant due to the multiversal nature of this story. There’s no mention of him having a different name like with Defender Strange, but it doesn’t mean we might not see different versions of the character throughout the film. It’s going to be fun speculating as we near its release.
Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, we finally have our first glimpse into the multiverse within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange will dive deep into a realm of infinite possibilities with the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange. No Way Home featured quite a few multiversal cameos from characters like Willem Dafoe‘sGreen Goblin, Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man, and even Jaime Foxx‘sElectro. With the multiverse open, it is unsurprising to think many more could pop up soon, one of which is rumored to be quite a popular Inhuman.
A new rumor from Fandomwire states that the ruler of Attilan himself, Black Bolt, will be making his MCU debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The character is believed to be a variant from within the multiverse working alongside the rumored multiversal Illuminati. Currently, there’s no name attached to the role, and it’s unknown if this Black Bolt will be the one we saw a while back in ABC’s Inhumans series, which ran for one season before being canceled by the network. If that was the case, then perhaps we could see Anson Mount reprise the role, but the Inhuman’s future in the Marvel cinematic universe is still up in the air.
Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness is currently set to release in theaters on May 6, 2022. The film was directed by Sam Raimi and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Elizabeth Olsen, Rachel McAdams, and Xochitl Gomez.
Here’s a rather curious detail. For some time, Marvel Studios has been highlighting its intros in new and creative ways, as fanfare has become an essential aspect of any Marvel viewing experience. It also makes them distinct from other studios that used the logo, such as Sony who included the “In Association With” during airings of their spinoffs like Venom. Interestingly enough, the first trailer has dropped for next year’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and it includes an interesting detail.
In the brief showcase of the fanfare getting split apart by what is likely the multiverse, similar in design to What If…?’s crystal effect, you can spot the original Marvel opening that was used for the original X-Men, Spider-Man, or any classic Marvel film. Early on, even Marvel Studios used it only adding the “Studios” part to make it distinct.
It’s not a direct reference, but the logo nowadays includes the live-action characters in its opening rather than comic depictions. It looks like an updated or slightly altered version of the original, if you compare it to Logan, for example.
The current version is quite a bit different, as it opens up with the comic logos but doesn’t showcase the Marvel logo until much later. What is interesting is that you can see a 3D version of the classic logo included as well. Perhaps we get a unique intro fanfare in the Doctor Strange sequel, which would make it stand out even more. It would be fun for them to explore different versions of their intro to highlight what the series or film focuses on, as they expand with cosmic and grounded storylines.
The trailer has finally dropped for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It was first included as a post-credit sequence during the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which made a lot of sense if you consider how that storyline continues the multiversal storyline that kicked off during Loki. As Strange is about to face off against his own darker reflection, we got a first look and poster. Not just that, but even a new logo is highlighted at the end that offers a streamlined version of what was used in the original announcement.
The logo is surprisingly simple, as they dropped the visual design to make Strange’s name stand out. Of course, there’s always the chance that this is the version used in the film, as they stick to the previous version in the film’s marketing. The poster noticeably is lacking the logo, which is quite a curious choice and highlights the potential power they have with this project. It was also really clever to advertise the film through the post-credit sequence of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has been breaking records left and right.
