The Pulse: Collecting the Biggest News of the Week of December 12th-18th

One of the biggest movies in the biggest film franchise of all time makes a lot of money.

spider man no way home domestic

Spider-Man: No Way Home was greeted with an enthusiasm from audiences all around the world that we probably haven’t seen since Avengers: Endgame. That led to it surpassing expectations in what regards its domestic debut. The incredible reviews it got, coupled with the passionate word of mouth, seems to hint at its box office tally continued growth at a steady rhythm in the coming weeks.

New characters added to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

726 variants of Mephisto are set to debut on the Doctor Strange sequel that’s set to premiere next year. We’ll get Grumpy Mephisto, Sleepy Mephisto, Dopey, Sneezy, and several more. According to a trade report, the movie will be setting up the Multiverse as the MCU takes a deep dive into the concept, after only tip-toeing through it in the more recent projects.

    Spider-M4n is a go

    spider man 4

The worst best-kept secret in Hollywood outside of everything regarding Spider-Man: No Way Home has been finally made public. Spider-Man 4 is confirmed to be in active development over at Marvel Studios meaning the web-slinger will continue his cinematic journey alongside, should we say, much more likable, powerful and overall heroic characters. Hopefully, this fourth solo outing, that may or may not evolve into a new trilogy (it depends if fans finally start connecting with such an obnoxious and awkward character), will focus more on a struggling Parker as he leaves his vigilante days behind him and gets a real job for once.

Karate Kid spin-off² goes back to where it all started.

Xolo Maridueña is set to become the superhero his Cobra Kai days have shown he always had the potential to be. His debut in the upcoming Blue Beetle has now moved from being an HBO Max exclusive to a full-fledged theatrical release. Hopefully, this not only hints at a hopeful future in what the COVID-19 pandemic is concerned, with audiences back in theaters but at a worthy final product that’ll justify the push to the big screen where expectations are bound to increase. Now just cast Elisabeth Shue as La Dama.

‘Hawkeye’ finale being an hour long screws even more healthy sleeping schedules.

    hawkeye finale

This is a bit of news that will probably anger east-coast fans as next Thursday’s productivity might be at an all-time low. For everybody else, besides being cool that we’ll be having more minutes to enjoy, it seems to hint that Hawkeye might actually resolve most of its storylines. The plot twist will probably be that the show will use those extra minutes to develop a few more unresolved storylines and have the MCU never address them ever again.

Jim Mickle is set to adapt one of the best movies you haven’t watched yet.

    god country netflix

There’s this guy working at Marvel Comics who, ever since starting at the company, has written some of the most absurdly awesome storylines ever put to paper this century. From Doctor Strange to the Silver Surfer, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Venom, there’s hardly a character he has touched that didn’t instantly become a must-read series. But before all of this he wrote God Country, over at Image Comics. His name is Donny Cates, and he is working on the adaptation that Legendary is putting together, alongside Jim Mickle. Mickle also adapted the iconic comic series Sweet Tooth for Netflix, a series that didn’t get enough attention as it probably was in the top 5 of comic book adaptations in 2021. Meaning he should be good at his job. So being, God Country is on the right path to become a huge disappointment as it seems to have nowhere to go but down, given the quality of the source material and the talent already attached to it.

‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Nearing End on Reshoots

In the latest Heat Vision blog entry on The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Couch shares some bits from Spider-Man: No Way Home’s carpet as many of the actors involved reflect back on their work. Of course, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong‘s appearance in the film alongside characters from Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, there are some fun connections to be had. Raimi has now taken it upon himself to bring the Doctor Strange sequel to life that’ll explore the madness of the multiverse.

In November we learned that the team entered production once again for extensive reshoots to “realize the full potential of the film” and it seems that they may finally be nearing completion of the additional photography. In the latest piece by the Hollywood Reporter, they got a chance to interview Wong on what the Raimi film might offer to audiences.

I’ve been marveling at his vision, his take. His overall resolve, as well. We were shooting in the middle of a pandemic and it was almost like, Doctor Strange and the Menace of the Multischedule. We were literally filming in a quantum way. There is no plan A. There’s a B and a C and then a D. Your mind is running all over the place. I have no doubt it’s going to be something fantastic

    Benedict Wong

It’s still exciting to think about what the upcoming sequel might have to offer to audiences and what they may have added throughout their reshoots. Loki introduced us to the concept of the multiverse within the MCU and we even saw those rules get broken in Ultron’s power grab during What If…?. Here’s hoping the first look won’t be for too long anymore to see just how mad the multiverse will end up being.

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Merch Offers First Look at Rhintra and Mordo’s New Look

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Merch Offers First Look at Rhintra and Mordo’s New Look

It looks like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness merchandise is slowly finding its way online. We’ve got a few teases of what’s to come and there have been quite a few rumors on how or who won’t appear in a film. A few weeks ago, a toy leak gave us a hint at what would be included, such as comic-inspired ones for Sleepwalker and D’Spayre. Well, they finally arrived and include some surprising reveals, such as our first look at Rhintra and Baron Mordo’s new look for the upcoming film. @Preterniadotcom shared the first look which you can check out here:

    https://twitter.com/preterniadotcom/status/1471516231857577985

It seems that Baron Mordo now goes by Master Mordo in the new listings and is rocking a great new look. We still don’t know what the film has in store for him and if we might see mother Variants of the character. As we’re about to set out into the multiverse, there seem to be the dangers of endless potential, as who knows if even Doctor Strange will always be the same person.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch on Doctor Strange’s Future Beyond ‘Multiverse of Madness’

Benedict Cumberbatch on Doctor Strange’s Future Beyond ‘Multiverse of Madness’

We still have some time before Doctor Strange gets his first sequel, Multiverse of Madness next year. Yet, Benedict Cumberbatch will be on the silver screen as the Sorcerer Supreme in just a few weeks, as he’ll appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He’ll help guide Peter Parker through the multiverse, as he faces an unlikely future with his identity out there. Of course, it does open the question of what does the future has in store for our favorite sorcerer. Seems that question was also nagging USA Today, as they asked the actor about it in a recent interview while he was promoting Power of the Dog. It looks like he is open to sticking around quite a bit longer, as he says that:

As long as the character is interesting and challenging and doing fantastic things in the MCU, why not.

    Benedict Cumberbatch

It’s always great to see an actor as talented as Cumberbatch committed to bringing these characters to life and even willing to stick around for a longer period of time. Chris Hemsworth famously wanted to leave the franchise after a certain amount of films until Taika Waititi came along and added a breath of fresh air to his franchise, reigniting that spark. We’ll see if a third or even fourth entry in the Doctor Strange franchise can add something new for the actor to dip his toes in and keep the enthusiasm going.

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ LEGO Box Set Offers Closer Look at Scarlet Witch

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ LEGO Box Set Offers Closer Look at Scarlet Witch

Just a few days ago, a Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness LEGO set has found its way online featuring a first look at Gargantos. It gave us a small glimpse at the packaging with a closer look at Xochitl Gomez as Miss America. Well, it seems that the box set has found its way online in higher quality thanks to @RPK_NEWS1, which also gives us a closer look at Scarlet Witch’s design for the upcoming film, as she stands alongside America, Strange, and Wong even as she was missing in the LEGO Set.

It looks like her design has remained mostly the same from when we saw her in WandaVision. Perhaps it highlights how the various Disney+ shows also help prepare costumes and designs ahead of their appearance in other projects. Adds a nice level of synergy, such as Abomination having a role in Shang-Chi ahead of his return in the She-Hulk series. Of course, there’s a chance they did make a few small changes, but we’ll only find out once we get a closer look at the full design.

  • ‘Doctor Strange Into The Multiverse of Madness’ Lego Set Offers First Look Gargantos

‘Doctor Strange Into The Multiverse of Madness’ Lego Set Offers First Look Gargantos

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is going all-in on the multiverse with the Spider-Man: No Way Home, followed by Doctor Strange Into The Multiverse of Madness a few months later. The film will see the return of Stephen Strange alongside Wanda Maximoff, who joins him following the events of WandaVision. Outside of Wanda and America Chavez appearing, not much is known about the film as plot details are still very much under wraps. However, it seems marketing could be kicking into action with a recent leak from Lego.

A new Lego set for the upcoming Doctor Strange film has made its way onto the internet. and it seems to confirm something previously reported on our site. The set is named ‘Gargantos Showdown’ and features a brick-built Gargantos along with Doctor Strange, Wong, and America Chavez, who will also be making her MCU debut in the film. The set comes with a description that states:

Gargantos, the giant, one-eyed monster, spots Doctor Strange, Wong, and America Chavez and wriggles on its long, green tentacles towards the 3 heroes. Will the team’s special powers and weapons be enough to defeat the monster or will they be tangled up in tentacles? Only you can decide.

Back in July, reports surfaced suggesting actress Yenifer Molina had joined the cast as ‘Gargantos 2.’ For those who aren’t familiar with the character, Gargantos was a giant tentacle monster from Marvel Comics who was under the control of the Lemurian villain known as Naga. The character has ties to Namor but hasn’t been featured in comics since 1989.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently set to hit theaters on May 6th, 2022.

  • Hiddleston, Wilson and DiMartino Seemingly Confirmed for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

Hiddleston, Wilson and DiMartino Seemingly Confirmed for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

As Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness enters reshoots, it now appears as though Tom Hiddleston, Own Wilson and Sophia DiMartino will return in the sequel. Earlier this month, reports surfaced suggesting that part of the reasoning behind the extensive reshoots was to add cameos from a Marvel Television series. Of course, said cameos were not exactly named, although earlier reports suggest Captain Carter will make her live-action debut, while Loki will return alongside Sylvie.

Now, thanks to IMDb, it looks as though Loki and Sylvie – along with Mobius, will indeed return for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Stunt performers for Hiddleston, Wilson and DiMartino have been added to the cast of the forthcoming film on IMDb.

Just recently, the Doctor himself, Benedict Cumberbatch commented on the reshoots. The actor noted they were ultimately to enhance the film further. “We’re in the middle of reshoots and we’re working incredibly hard to make a schedule work to realize the full potential of the film,” he explained. “Bits that we want to do better but also bits that were just impossible to do on the day because of logistics, COVID, etc.”

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Reshoots are to “Realize the Full Potential of the Film”

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Reshoots are to “Realize the Full Potential of the Film”

It came as a shock to many that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had to restart a new wave of reshoots. Yet, it’s also quite a regular occurrence for any modern production to try to nail a few additional shots and make up for things they couldn’t make work due to scheduling conflicts. There were also some rumors hinting that the reshoots were a way for them to add a few more cameos that didn’t manage due to scheduling conflicts.

Luckily, in the latest edition of Empire, leading star Benedict Cumberbatch offered a little insight into why they were tackling the reshoots, especially with how extensive they were teased to be. He goes on to highlight logistics and COVID as reasoning, but also that they want to “realize the full potential of the film,” which is a rather curious remark. Here’s the full quote:

We’re in the middle of reshoots and we’re working incredibly hard to make a schedule work to realize the full potential of the film – bits that we want to do better but also bits that were just impossible to do on the day because of logistics, COVID, etc. We were so delayed in production because of that. Luckily, not during production too much. Although everything is just a little slower.

    Benedict Cumberbatch

The quote is certainly curious as it does add that a multiversal storyline wants to “realize its full potential.” So, it adds to the rumors that they are likely adding a few more appearances, especially with the reference to COVID as a major cause. Here’s hoping that recent developments don’t affect the current production, which is currently eyeing a May release.

  • New Toy Leak Indicates Sleepwalker and D’Spayre Among the ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Wave Figures

New Toy Leak Indicates Sleepwalker and D’Spayre Among the ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Wave Figures

Very few people cover the future Marvel Legends wave on the level of YouTuber Rektangular. His channel is full of leaks and updates of any kind, which makes it worth a follow if you’re a collector. In his most recent update, Rektangular spilled the beans on what to expect from Hasbro’s Marvel Legends collection for 2022.

Obviously, the further out the waves, the less info that’s available, but Rektangular seemed very certain about what to expect from the first two waves set to launch in 2022. The best part is that both will feature figures from upcoming MCU films.

The first wave of Legends is currently scheduled for a January release and will feature characters from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The wave will feature a mix of seven MCU and comic book characters who are currently only known by the following code names:

    • Runes
    • Bleeker
    • Bleeper
    • Stripes
    • Master
    • Sleep
    • Dreamy

According to Rektangular, two of those figures will be comic book sculpts of Sleepwalker and D’Spayre. A digital rendering of D’Spayre, who is a demon and one of the Fear Lords that feed upon the souls of humans for power, leaked some time ago. However, this is the first mention (to my knowledge) of Sleepwalker joining the wave. A relatively obscure character, he has a bit of a cult following and has taken on the Fear Lords, specifically Nightmare, in the comics. Of course, these characters being in the wave is in no way an indication that they will appear in the film.

It’s likely that Sleepwalker and D’Spayre are “Sleepy” and “Dreamy” while the other characters are from the film. Given what we know, it’s possible that Wanda is “Runes”, Strange is Bleeker (a reference to the NYC Sanctum’s location), America Chavez is “Stripes” and Wong is “Master.” That just leaves “Bleeper”, who could be Rintrah. Keep in mind this is the first wave and won’t be spoilery, so Rintrah seems safer than say members of the rumored Illuminati.

April will reportedly see the release of a 7-figure wave featuring characters from Thor: Love and Thunder that we recently covered here. According to Rektangular, the rest of the year will see 6 additional waves released:

    • April: Vintage wave
    • May: X-Men wave
    • June: Classic wave
    • September: Avengers wave
    • September: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever wave
    • October: Avenger wave

It’s likely that characters from Marvel Studios’ streaming series She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel will be sprinkled into some of the waves listed above. It’s also possible that additional waves could be planned. Check out Rektangular’s report below and give him a follow if you’re into such things.

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Is a “Giddy Mixture” of Marvel and Raimi’s Style

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Is a “Giddy Mixture” of Marvel and Raimi’s Style

As soon as Sam Raimi took over directing duties from Scott Derrickson for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, many wondered what it might mean for the film. Not only is Raimi‘s Spider-Man film what kicked off the superhero boom alongside Blade, but he’s also quite famous for his work on horror films. As the Doctor strange sequel was teased frequently as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first horror story.

So, he is the perfect choice to join the project to bring his flair from films like Evil Dead or Drag Me to Hell. There were some concerns that his directorial style might take a backseat for the overarching universe building, but actor Benedict Cumberbatch may have offered a tease of what’s to come.

You have to wait and see. There’s a lot of Marvel and there’s a lot of Raimi as well. Raimi fans will hopefully not be disappointed. It’s a very giddy mixture, actually. And I think it’s, it’s a riot and it will live up to its title, a multiverse of madness for sure

It certainly sounds like it’ll bring together the best of both worlds. The post-credit sequence from WandaVision made many questions if it was directed by Raimi due to the use of the camera chasing towards Wanda’s little cabin. There’s something iconic about his use of the camera and might make the horror elements in this multiversal storyline stand out even more. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait too long for the first trailer and a hint at what to expect.
