D23: First ‘Echo’ Footage Confirms Vincent D’Onofrio’s Return, Explores Native American Culture

We’ve all theorized that Echo would see the return of Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Kingpin and even Charlie Cox as Daredevil. While it’s a spinoff from Hawkeye, it will set the stage for more grounded storylines. During D23, it seems that the first footage showcased at D23 includes the return of Kingpin with an eyepatch, which is a follow-up from the last time we saw him.

That isn’t all, as they also hinted at a lot of exploration of Native American culture, which is fitting given the character’s background.

  • Alaqua Cox Has Wrapped Filming on ‘Echo’

Alaqua Cox Has Wrapped Filming on ‘Echo’

Late Friday night, Alaqua Cox took to her Instagram stories to share that production has officially wrapped on Echo. The actress shared a photo of her texting her late father in celebration of wrapping principal photography. She texted, “We just wrapped up Echo! I did it dad!!” She shared a screenshot of the text and added, “I know you’re so proud of me, dad. I love and miss you so much.” The actress lost her father in November 2021 and has been open with fans about her grieving process as she navigates headlining her own series.

Filming on Echo kicked off back in April, with Cox once again using Instagram to share the news. The actress posted flowers she received from her co-star K. Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs) to celebrate the start of production. Marvel Studios would later confirm production had started by revealing some of the cast of the series and a still shortly thereafter.

Echo, of course, is a spinoff from Hawkeye. Not only will Cox be returning as the titular hero, but she’ll be joined by Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Wilson Fisk, who we saw briefly in Hawkeye. Also joining her in the series will be Charlie Cox, who will be appearing as Matt Murdock/Daredevil.

Echo is slated to hit Disney+ sometime next year. With production officially wrapped, perhaps we might hear about a proper release date during the Marvel Studios presentation at D23 next month.

  • The Hypothetical 2023 Marvel Studios Release Calendar, V4

The Hypothetical 2023 Marvel Studios Release Calendar, V4

Once upon a time, this looked like it might be headed for a 2022 release. But with reshoots having to be spread out over several months due to actor availability, it’s clearly not going to be ready. It should, however, be ready to roll out in early 2023 and with principal photography done and finishing touches left to go, expect Secret Invasion to be the first Marvel Studios project of 2023.

This one has bounced around a bit in terms of release date, but it is absolutely the furthest along of the 2023 films. This time around, expect BIG action and stakes as the Ant-family takes on Jonathan Majors‘ Kang and Corey Stoll’s MODOK (who we hear looks absolutely fabulous). Marvel Studios may let the hype train out of the station earlier than normal on this one.

One of at least two animated series headed to Disney Plus in 2023, the X-Men revival already has a ton of buzz around it. Work was being done on the episodes long before anyone knew it existed, so its ten episodes could be ready to roll out on D+ sometime late in the first quarter of 2023.

Currently cruising through production, the Hawkeye spinoff will definitely be ready for a late-Spring/early-Summer release unless the wheels fall off. Not only will this bring Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Kingpin back, but it’s also set to really explore Native American culture

James Gunn‘s last go-around with the team he made famous in 2014, Vol. 3 has quite the cast and could end up being one of the MCU’s biggest tearjerkers. It’s also going to be full of surprises (will Cosmo have a voice?) and while it’s the end for Gunn and some of the cast, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the end for everyone.

With production well underway in the UK, Loki’s second season will have no problem making it to D+ for the Summer of 2023. Interestingly, it could come out just about 2 years to the day after the first season, which is cool but way too long to wait after that Season 1 cliffhanger!

The Nia DaCosta led sequel to Captain Marvel moved back to mid-Summer and after Carol Danvers’ mid-credit appearance in the Ms. Marvel finale, fans finally have an inkling of what this one is all about. In every way possible, this film is a huge shift from the original and should be an action-packed reinvention of the franchise in the way The Winter Solider was for the MCU’s other Captain.

Production is underway on Ironheart and by the time this one hits Disney Plus, fans will have already gotten to know the lead from her time in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It looks like this one will also feature The Hood, one of Marvel Comics coolest baddies yet to make the jump to the MCU.

Set to debut in 2023, it would make sense to start the animated series in time for it to play during peak Spooky Season. With a full-length Marvel Studios Animation panel at SDCC, it seems like a first look at this is pretty likely, giving fans an idea of its connectivity to the Zombie reality seen in Season 1 of What If…?.

Blade is finally set to get production underway in September of 2022, giving the studio plenty of time to turn it around for November of 2023. Marvel Studios has been known to slide release dates up a week or so in the past; it would be smart of them to do so here to capitalize on the urge for fans to watch horror films in October.

The project on this list about which the least is known. It is supposed to film in the Fall of 2022 so a late 2023 release date makes sense. However, Marvel Studios production dates are more fluid now than ever, so don’t etch this one into your stone calendar just yet.

  • Daredevil, Kingpin Confirmed to Return for ‘Echo’

Daredevil, Kingpin Confirmed to Return for ‘Echo’

Rumors have swirled for quite some time, but now it’s official. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are returning to reprise their roles as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, respectively, in Marvel Studios Echo.

When Marvel Studios confirmed the cast for Echo back in May, many fans were quick to note the absence of both Cox and D’Onofrio. However, as is often the case, the initial casting announcement only included a handful of cast members: Alaqua Cox as Echo, Devery Jacobs (ReservationDogs) and Graham Greene. Joining them will be Chaske Spencer (The Twilight Saga), Tantoo Cardinal (Wind River), Cody Lightning (Four Sheets to the Wind), and Zahn McClarnon (Reservation Dogs), reprising his role as Maya’s dad, Willie Lopez. It is currently unknown how many episodes the actors will appear in, however, they are also rumored to be joined by former Defender, Krysten Ritter, who has long been rumored to reprise her role as Jessica Jones. Interestingly, while THR does address the Ritter rumors, the outlet does not confirm or deny her potential appearance in the series.

As for how Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil will be incorporated into the series, THR reports that Echo is set to feature a plotline in which Daredevil is on the search for a former ally. Cox starred in all three seasons of Daredevil and also starred in the team-up series, The Defenders, while D’Onofrio played Wilson Fisk on Daredevil for all three seasons.

Cox most recently appeared as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home, while D’Onofrio recently appeared alongside Alaqua Cox in Hawkeye. Production on Echo has been underway in Atlanta since May. As of now, Echo has no release date.

  • New Rumor Teases Daredevil Seeking a Fellow Defender in ‘Echo’

New Rumor Teases Daredevil Seeking a Fellow Defender in ‘Echo’

There have been quite a few rumors surrounding the upcoming Echo series. Not only would it continue the storyline of the character introduced in Hawkeye, but also potentially add even more screentime for Charlie Cox’s return as Daredevil. Now, a new rumor has hit the web from the folks over at Weekly Planet. During the Hot Scoop or a Shot of Poop segment, James Clement hinted at what he heard about the upcoming appearance of the Man Without Fear.

While the series is still set to focus on Alaqua Cox‘s character, it does seem like Daredevil will be featured in around three episodes. Vincent D’Onofrio is also set to return and will be around for four of the total six episodes. He may be wearing an eye patch from his last meeting with his adoptive daughter. The big reveal, however, is that Charlie Cox‘s Daredevil is actively seeking his fellow Defender, Jessica Jones.

Yep, Daredevil is in it for three episodes, as in Charlie Cox. Kingpin, Vinnie D’Onofrio is in four. The Kingpin storyline is building up to him running for mayor of New York City. Apparently, he’s going to be wearing an eye patch because he was shot in the head in Hawkeye… Daredevil is also going to be rocking a red and black suit and is looking for Jessica Jones.

    James Clement

There have been rumors that Krysten Ritter was potentially going to make a return in one of the upcoming Disney+ series. Her arrival in the Echo project would be quite the surprise and could hint at a cameo. The question is also why he’s actively looking for her. Perhaps she has some dirt to take down Fisk once again, or a Defenders reunion is in our future?

Disney+ did recently change the title of the Netflix series to A.K.A. Jessica Jones, which further hints at some kind of major plan for the character with a potential new series. We might have to wait a little longer until we truly find out but if this rumor turns out to be true, Echo could be climbing people’s must-watch lists.

  • ‘Echo’ Head Writer Shares Set Photo With First Look at New Logo

‘Echo’ Head Writer Shares Set Photo With First Look at New Logo

It’s not uncommon that Marvel Studios’ projects go through a variety of logos while they go into development. Initial announcements tend to use a logo strongly inspired by the character’s comic runs before starting to evolve into its own unique design. While we knew long before Hawkeye entered production that the character of Echo (Alaqua Cox) would get her own Disney+ series.

It wasn’t until Disney+ Day that we got our first look at its logo, which took a very simple design approach that isn’t new with any of the Marvel films. Yet, it looks like production has recently updated that they’ve updated the logo once again, as shared by the series head writer, Marion Dayre, on Twitter. While we don’t see anything from the actual production, we do get the series’ production name Solidarity alongside the new Echo logo.

The design seems a bit more steeped in what the series represents, and we may hopefully also get that in the eventual updated design for the logo, which has become part of their usual development cycle. The logo showcased above is very likely not going to be used outside of the production.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a unique logo design that was hard to decipher at first but was only meant for the production team. So, this design is very likely also following that very rule. Still, it’s always great to get an update, no matter how small it is and there’s a lot of promise to explore a smaller scale story with this series.

  • Marvel Studios Confirms ‘Echo’ Cast

    Marvel Studios Confirms ‘Echo’ Cast

Production on Marvel Studios’ Echo is currently underway in Atlanta, and in order to announce the new, Marvel Studios has shared a brand-new image from production.

Along with the image, the studio has announced a slew of cast members set to join Alaqua Cox’s Echo. As previously mentioned, the series will also star Devery Jacobs (ReservationDogs) and Graham Greene. Joining them will be Chaske Spencer (The Twilight Saga), Tantoo Cardinal (Wind River), Cody Lightning (Four Sheets to the Wind), and Zahn McClarnon (Reservation Dogs), who will undoubtedly reprise his role as Maya’s dad, Willie Lopez.

Fans will surely note that both Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are not listed as being a part of the cast. It is of note that the above cast more than likely only teases a fraction of the show’s cast. And let’s not forget, Marvel Studios never announced D’Onofrio or Cox would return for Hawkeye or Spider-Man: No Way Home, respectively, so it’s entirely possible the rumors of their returns are accurate.

Echo, a spinoff series from Hawkeye, will see the character forced to face the consequences of her ruthless behavior in New York City. As she tries to face her past, the character will need to reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she plans on moving forward.

Echo will premiere exclusively on Disney+ sometime in 2023.

  • Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie to Direct ‘Echo’

Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie to Direct ‘Echo’

As production has finally started on the Hawkeye spinoff Echo, we’ve finally gotten a first look and hint at what’s to expect from the upcoming Disney+ series. That is not all, as it also gave us a confirmation that Reservation DogsSydney Freeland is indeed directing, which she technically indirectly confirmed back in March, and she’ll be joined by Catriona McKenzie.

Now, a big part of the upcoming Disney+ series is about Alaqua Cox‘s Echo retracing her Native American roots. As such, a big part of the series is also dedicated to exploring the meaning of cultural heritage and one’s Indigenous roots. McKenzie is an Indigenous Australian director, who is Gunaikurnai. She’s worked on a variety of series such as How to Get Away With Murder, Supernatural, and The Walking Dead.

Sydney Freeland is of Navajo descent and has worked on a variety of projects, which includes Rutherford Falls, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and Fear the Walking Dead. She’s also one of the creative minds behind FX’s Reservation Dogs, which included all Indigenous writers and directors.

It’s great to see the talent they are pulling in for this project, especially with the series making it an important push for the representation given its main character’s background. It’ll be interesting to see how it might tie to her upbringing under Wilson Fisk and how visiting her hometown might change her way of looking at her past and future.

  • First Look and Synopsis for ‘Hawkeye’ Spinoff ‘Echo’, Eyeing a 2023 Release

First Look and Synopsis for ‘Hawkeye’ Spinoff ‘Echo’, Eyeing a 2023 Release

Marvel Studios has been busy working on its various spinoff series to further explore the different corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’ve just recently started work on some of their next productions, such as the Hawkeye spinoff series focused on Alaqua Cox’s Echo. The deaf former gang leader has made peace with what happened to her father and the events that transpired at the hands of Clint Barton as Ronin, as she now visits her hometown. There, she must face her past and reconnect with her Native American roots, as she learns what it means to be part of a family and community once again.

The Disney+ series is confirmed to release in 2023, but no exact time window has been given. With Secret Invasion already wrapping up work, it’s very likely it might take the summer spot going by what is currently in production. Yet, that also depends on when we might expect the next season of the animated What If…? series, which we’ve heard very little about in the past few months. We also got a first look from the series, giving us a look at Echo back at home, seemingly helping out.

    Image

It’s definitely going to be interesting to see how they tackle this series, as it may be similar to Moon Knight, as it may exist in its own little pocket. The small town location is also a nice change of pace with most Marvel stories taking place in cities or across the world. So, getting to not only spend time with a smaller and more intimate cast of characters but also sticking to one location could benefit the story pacing, which has been some criticism put against the Marvel Studios productions.

  • ‘Moon Knight’ Almost Featured Echo as a Love Interest

‘Moon Knight’ Almost Featured Echo as a Love Interest

Here’s a rather surprising reveal, but it seems that at one point Echo, better known as Maya Lopez, was considered to be the love interest for Marc Spector in the Moon Knight Disney+ series. Head writer Jeremy Slater revealed in an interview with the House of R podcast that they had Echo as the love interest at one point in its scripting phase, especially as Marvel Studios was interested in introducing the character.

At the time, Echo was going to be our love interest, solely based on the fact that they knew Marvel liked the character of Echo and was trying to find a show to put her in.

    Jeremy Slater

While the character was a love interest in the comics, they had a hard time fitting her into the storyline. As it’s a collaborative process, they pitched different ideas and it seems that they’ve realized the bigger potential to explore her character in Hawkeye at some point in the process.

They were like, ‘You know what, we’ve got this Hawkeye show and we feel like she would fit in a lot better there and we were like, ‘Oh, thank God.”

    Jeremy Slater

It looks like they had gone through quite a few ideas early on in the process, which was teased in the past as they had concept artists and writers support the teams to bring these ideas together. The Disney+ shows are also a new venture for Marvel Studios which also comes with many new learnings moving forward. So, we’ll see what other projects went through quite a few changes as they release more.
