Brand New ‘ETERNALS’ Trailer and Poster Released

Hot off the heels of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings buzz, Marvel Studios has decided to double our hype for the MCU’s future with this brand new trailer and poster for Eternals. Check it out!

Some fans, including myself, have been clamoring for some actual Eternals action since the first teaser didn’t give much. Seeing this has me convinced that we’re in for something special here. The action looks amazing. The set-up and backstory tease sounds very engaging. This trailer does a great job of giving us a glimpse and scope of the film as well. There are shots of civilizations getting destroyed, Celestials looking very sinister, and some great action shots from some of the key characters.

We finally also get to see Kit Harrington too!

  • ‘ETERNALS’: Sersi and Black Knight’s Romance Takes Place in MCU’s Present Day

‘ETERNALS’: Sersi and Black Knight’s Romance Takes Place in MCU’s Present Day

Entertainment Weekly has released a grand interview with the cast and team behind Marvel Studios’ upcoming Eternals film. It offered many details on what we can expect from the film, such as what they were up to during events like Avengers: Endgame. Luckily, we also got some insight into Gemma Chan’s Sersi, who will be the driving force behind the film. Her relationship with Richard Madden’s Ikaris has been highlighted quite frequently throughout the press.

Yet, we knew that Kit Harington might also spend some time with her in a romantic relationship. As he is playing Dane Whitman, the Back Knight, we guessed they would have had a brief romance during the Middle Ages, but it seems they’re taking a very different route this time around. Entertainment Weekly reveals that:

One of the last roles to be cast was the film’s emotional center: Chan plays Sersi, who — unlike some of her Eternal cohorts — has a soft spot for humans. In the present day, she works as a museum curator in London and is dating human Dane Whitman (played by Game of Thrones alum Kit Harington)

    Entertainment Weekly

This is quite an interesting hint, as it would imply that Whitman won’t don the iconic moniker from the comics. There’s still the chance he’s a descendant of a Black Knight and might end up wielding the Ebony Sword, but he isn’t from that time period. Of course, they could also take the modern route to give him the Photon Sword that he ended up wielding later on. They might want to avoid him swinging around a deadly sword when facing human enemies.

  • ‘ETERNALS’ Will Explore their Absence During ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’

‘ETERNALS’ Will Explore their Absence During ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’

We’ve been anxiously awaiting the next installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s only a few more weeks until Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings finally releases, and Eternals awaits us in November. The latter will introduce us to a new race within the universe that has been guarding humanity since the earliest days. Of course, it made many wonders where they were in past entries of the franchise. Why they weren’t helping the Avengers from the planet getting destroyed?

Well, it looks like Entertainment Weekly was able to shed some light on the topic, as in their big coverage of the upcoming film they sat down with the cast and crew to talk about the next entry in the MCU. In it, they also revealed some interesting details about what we can expect from the film and hinted that the film will explore why they didn’t get involved with any of the events we’ve witnessed since the first Iron Man in 2008.

Eternals picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, when half of the population has returned after being snapped out of existence. It’ll also answer why the Eternals didn’t volunteer to help go after Thanos — or help tackle any of the other various crises throughout history. (The short answer is that their mission is to focus on the Deviants and never interfere with human affairs. Still, the Avengers probably could’ve used the help.)

    Entertainment Weekly

The message of the first trailer did highlight that they don’t interfere with humanity, but we’ve witnessed them do it quite a bit in that same footage. So, whatever they did before these events might have triggered them to distance themselves from these events. Their focus on the Deviants is also an interesting aspect, but with Thanos having a Deviant gene in the comics, it might be a bit more complicated than it seems at first glance.

  • ‘Eternals’: Gemma Chan Teases Sersi’s Romance with Richard Madden’s Ikaris

‘Eternals’: Gemma Chan Teases Sersi’s Romance with Richard Madden’s Ikaris

Black Widow signaled Marvel Studios’ grand return to cinemas. Now, we have three more films heading our way, introducing the many corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s one that stands out among the rest, the millennia-spanning Eternals will introduce the world to the alien race that was there when humanity was just in its infancy. After we got our first trailer, we got a glimpse at the all-star cast and the film’s central themes.

Luckily, Gemma Chan, who will play Sersi, sat down with Vogue and discussed her second MCU character after playing Minn-Erva briefly in 2019’s Captain Marvel. She offers some insight into what we can expect with her character and hints that they might be breaking the formula that put Marvel’s iconic heroes on the map, as:

Sersi is not your typical superhero: she’s not necessarily the best fighter, she doesn’t have the most obviously impressive powers. The main thing is she’s an empath. She has a connection with humans, and with the world and the earth. That is her strength, so I leant into that.

The actress goes on to discuss working alongside her long-time friend Richard Madden, who will take on the role of fellow Eternal Ikaris. Most known for his role as Robb Stark on Game of Thrones, we’ll meet his character in the film as a long-time lover of the iconic character. She shared a little insight into what we can expect from their relationship, while nervously keeping an eye out for Marvel Studios’ famous snipers.

Between us, she and Ikaris are kind of immortal soulmates. That was a fun thing to play. Over a span of a thousand years, how do you play a normal relationship? The good thing is, Richard and I have known each other for over 10 years.

It’s quite an interesting story they’ll introduce with a love that lasted for such a long time. We know that fellow Game of Thrones actor Kit Harrington will join as the Black Knight. So, we’ll see if these immortal soulmates will face some unlikely challenges once the film releases this November in theaters.

  • Marvel Studios ‘HAWKEYE’ on Track for a Fall 2021 Streaming Debut

Marvel Studios ‘HAWKEYE’ on Track for a Fall 2021 Streaming Debut

In May of 2019, Kevin Feige took to the San Diego Comic-Con stage to announce that one of the founding members of the Avengers, Hawkeye, would get his own series on Disney+. The series will star Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton and see him team up with another iconic archer from Marvel Comics, Kate Bishop, who will be portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld. In terms of release date, all we know is that the series is set to release at some point in late 2021. But thanks to a recent social media post from another Marvel Studios actress, we now have a potential idea of when the series could drop on Disney+.

Lauren Ridloff, who is currently set to portray Makkari in the upcoming Marvel Studios’ Eternals, took to Instagram to post this picture of her alongside Alaqua Cox, who was cast as Maya Lopez, aka Echo, in the upcoming Hawkeye series with the caption: “Echo and Makkari looking at you, Fall of 2021″. This caption is particularly significant given that we now have a far more approximate estimate of when we could expect Hawkeye to debut on Disney+. Having a Fall of 2021 release date would place Hawkeye to release sometime between September and November. With What If…? and Ms. Marvel still slated to debut sometime before Hawkeye this year, it’s more likely than not aiming for a November release date alongside Marvel Studios’ Eternals, similar to how the Disney+ series Loki and Marvel Studios’ Black Widow have overlapping releases in July.

  • Theory Thursday: Exploring ‘Eternals’ Anime and Manga Inspirations

Theory Thursday: Exploring ‘Eternals’ Anime and Manga Inspirations

Following her historic win at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Oscars for her directorial work on Nomadland, all eyes are on the Academy-Award-winning director Chloé Zhao. She will deliver what could very well be a heavy Award Season contender for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Regardless, fans are definitely in for what could very well be one of the most original cinematic experiences the MCU has ever produced. In an interview with Variety, she discussed some of the inspirations for her work on Eternals.

Jack Kirby and his imagination, his incredible work, is really the foundation of it. On top of that, there is what Marvel Studios has built, this incredible journey they have going on. And then on top of that is me as a fan of the MCU. And then, me as a fan of the genre, but also growing up with sci-fi and manga and fantasy films. And how can we have this big melting pot and cook up something that may just taste a little bit different? It was just an exciting thing; all of us went in wanting to do that. We’ll see.

That particular quote teases a visual feast that will arrive in theaters this November. The combination of Jack Kirby‘s original designs with modern manga and sci-fi adaptations through the lens of Zhao sounds like an incredible visual experience. The one element that stands out amongst these components is the reference to the Japanese comic. Manga and its animated counterpart, Anime, aren’t always mentioned by directors as an inspiration. So, why don’t we take a look at what may be the potential inspiration that lends Eternals a unique visual style?

    Neon Genesis Evangelion

The concept art for the god-like Celestials instantly reminded me of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The Celestial seems to have an uncanny resemblance to the EVA mechs from the anime and could’ve been how they will bring these larger-than-life beings to live-action. Pacific Rim did something similar by grounding its camera work and immerse viewers into the scenery of giant mechs fighting giant Kaiju. Zhao may have taken a similar approach to make the Celestials stand out even more. The iconic anime may also inspire the Marvel Studio film’s story. Evangelion‘s protagonists, who pilot the titular mechs, take on an onslaught of Kaiju-based creatures known as Angels. These creatures are creations by the first race of beings of the universe. They are simply known as the Seeds of Life. In Eternals, the alien race faces off against an evil race only known as “Deviants.” These inhuman-looking creatures were also created by the Celestials in the comics. Notice the similarities between the two?

    Berserk

Now, there is one Berserk. The series’ protagonist, Guts, could very well be the character template for Kit Harrington‘s Dane Whitman. He is also better known by comic fans as the Black Knight. Apart from them being expert swordsmen, these characters exist in a moral grey area. Overall, they are portrayed as heroic characters but have committed acts that would be considered ethically wrong, especially by modern sensibilities. It can’t be easy for a normal man to live among god-like entities and their ongoing war with strange inhuman monsters. A character like this would introduce an interesting dynamic to the MCU that questions what it means to be a hero. It could make Eternals stand out even more once it drops in theaters this coming November.

  • Latest ‘Eternals’ Merchandise Hints at a Thanos Connection

Latest ‘Eternals’ Merchandise Hints at a Thanos Connection

Even after the first trailer was released for Marvel Studios’ Eternals, we still know very little about the film’s plot. There have been rumors giving us a small hint at how it comes together. We see the alien race of humanoids help in humanity’s evolution as they claim to have never intervened in the events of people. There was only a brief glimpse at the main antagonists, the Deviants, but nothing concrete of where they came from, or their creation at the hands of the Celestials. In Avengers: Infinity War, we got a brief glimpse at their comic homeworld, Titan, yet there was no hint if they have some connection to the Mad Titan. Luckily, Twitter user @Eternalsupdate noticed a new listing on Amazon that revealed their homeworld.

Living on Saturn’s moon, Titan, the Eternals protect Earth from the Deviants–and all other forms of cosmic evil.

It is the first time that their origin is tied to Titan in some capacity. Of course, it is merchandise so it could change or not be addressed in the film directly. Yet, the same Twitter user also noticed in the MCU-canon Marvel’s Avengers Station exhibit that there is a mention he was the last of his species.

Now, the latest trailer confirmed the timing of the film, or at least part of it, will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Perhaps it was the Mad Titan that banished them to Earth and stripped them from their memory, which is why they weren’t involved in the mess. It also opens up the possibility of Thanos potentially appearing in the film in some capacity. In the comics, he has part of the Deviant gene and is the reason for his purple appearance, which could get explored in some capacity as we uncover what exactly these mysterious villains truly are. No matter what direction they are heading with Eternals, it’s exciting to see how it may influence the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s also great that more evidence is hinting at their connection to Thanos and Titan, which seemed oddly sidelined so far.

  • ‘Eternals’ Trailer 24-Hour Viewer Count Surpasses ‘Cruella’ and ‘Black Widow’

‘Eternals’ Trailer 24-Hour Viewer Count Surpasses ‘Cruella’ and ‘Black Widow’

It’s never easy to try out a brand new IP. Even a giant like Marvel Studios can’t always bank on its brand to sell the craziest concepts every time. They took a gamble when they first introduced the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the world. Their latest venture to explore the vast history of the franchise through the Eternals could’ve been another one. It looks like there was nothing to worry about, as Deadline reports that the trailer clocked in 77 million views within the first 24 hours. As such, it’s their biggest Disney-Marvel trailer drop since the pandemic started 14 months ago.

It beat out the first trailer for Cruella, which managed a total of 71M. It even beats out numbers from projects from before the pandemic, such as Maleficent: Mistress of Evil‘s 61.7M and Aladdin‘s 60.8M. It was also the No.1 trend right after it launched and is only bested by The Falcon and Winter Soldier‘s Super Bowl spot, which included broadcast numbers. Deadline points out that the Chloé Zhao-directed film is purely going off global online traffic.

It even manages to beat out the big return trailer for Black Widow, which announced it was heading to Disney+ Premier Access a few months ago. That trailer even managed to surpass the second one by 13 million viewers at the time. That trailer already surpassed the view count for Black Panther, WandaVision, and Loki. Sadly, we currently could not find any view counts for the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings premiere trailer. Still, it looks like Marvel Studios has another successful franchise with Eternals in its hand if the viewer count is anything to go by. Seems even after a year of hiatus they aren’t slowing down anytime soon.

  • How ‘Eternals’ Cosmic Energy May Connect to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’s Adam Warlock

How ‘Eternals’ Cosmic Energy May Connect to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’s Adam Warlock

After a long wait, we finally got our first look at Eternals. The trailer offers a closer look at how cosmic energy works within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It acts like golden fleece that is the basis of their abilities and can serve different purposes. Thena can create weapons out of it, such as the sword we briefly see. Sersi seems to summon water as the cosmic energy flows through the ground. Even Makkari’s superspeed leaves the golden lines in a similar design that Quicksilver did in Avengers: Age of Ultron. In a way, it seems to allude that most supernatural abilities might have close ties to the Eternals through this mystical, all-encompassing power. The MCU puts a strong emphasis on energy types and connecting them to specific colors, such as the prominence of purple in Black Panther’s technology. As such, it could add more context to a character tease that has yet to pay off who shares that color scheme.

The Eternals": Erste Bilder im großen Marvel-Trailer | film.at

The color gold hasn’t played a considerable role in the franchise. Well, there is one exception. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 introduced us to the Sovereign. They are a genetically engineered race that lives on a collective of planets. Now, you might remember that every member of this alien race has one thing in common, their skin is pure gold. They also utilize advanced technology painted in the color due to their strong belief in the purity they reflect. The color also plays an integral role in the birthing cocoons that brings this alien race to life.

We have to keep in mind that Adam originally was the holder of the Soul Stone. Just like the MCU’s Vision held the Mind Stone, it was implanted on his forehead and had a deep connection to his abilities. As the stones got destroyed in Avengers: Endgame, it was uncertain if Adam’s entire origin would change. He wasn’t originally part of the Sovereign but created by the Enclave, a group of human scientists, as the perfect human in the comics. So, the new direction of the films and the golden look may connect him to that cosmic energy. We never learn of their creators in the film, and it wouldn’t be too crazy to assume the Eternals or even Celestials had some play in that.

Guardians of the Galaxy: All of Adam Warlock's Powers & Abilities, Ranked

As such, the golden cosmic energy we see throughout Eternals may be the basis of this alien race. If Sersi can let water flow from cosmic energy, its potential could seem limitless. So, they tested out ways to create a new form of life that ended up becoming its collective over time. The cocoon we see in the Guardians‘ post-credit sequence could be his body getting weaved out of cosmic energy into the perfect being of Ayesha’s vision. Little does she know, the Sovereign queen is playing with powers she can’t control and may lead to Adam breaking free from that race. Eternals is introducing us to the energy that will have a larger role moving forward. Perhaps the golden cosmic energy will face its silver counterpoint known as Power Cosmic in the future as well. Instead of seeking the stones, he becomes an entity of pure cosmic energy seeking its opposite to unite against a larger threat.

  • Gil Birmingham’s Casting Revealed in ‘Eternals’ Poster

Gil Birmingham’s Casting Revealed in ‘Eternals’ Poster

After a long wait, the first teaser for Marvel Studios’ Eternals has finally dropped. It includes first looks at the massive cast that consists of Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Don Lee, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, and many more. We also got a brand new poster that teases the visuals the film is going for with the official cast listing. Now, if you take a closer look at the bottom, it also includes more names that haven’t been heavily promoted. We thought we knew the entire cast of the film, but it looks like some well-known names found their way onto the poster as it confirms that Yellowstone‘s Chief Thomas Rainwater, Gil Birmingham, has joined the film in an unknown role. His inclusion also showcases the diversity of the film’s cast.

It is unclear which role he might have but going by his placement he will have a prominent role in the film. There is a chance he could be doing the voice for one of the Celestials or even the film’s main antagonist, the Deviant Kro. So far, that is the only main character whose actor has not been revealed. Either way, the addition of Birmingham is great to see and hopefully, his role might mean we’ll see plenty more of him in the near future. The first teaser gave us a glimpse of these new alien beings that supervised the development of our world. Hopefully, the next trailer will offer a closer look at the story and why the alien race finally intervenes in humanity’s development.
