Richard Madden Talks How Chloé Zhao’s Unique Vision of Ikaris Inspired Him to Join ‘ETERNALS’

All eyes are now on November’s release of Eternals, which will introduce the world to the earliest point in time of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ll get introduced to a brand new alien race that existed long before the Avengers were around. Director Chloé Zhao whipped up quite the cast which includes Game of ThronesRichard Madden. He’ll take on the role of Ikaris, an important figure in the Marvel comics.

In an interview with Total Film, the actor revealed why he was interested in taking on the mantle and how the non-superhero aspects of this superhero drew his interest.

That’s why I was drawn to him. I don’t see him as a superhero I’ve seen before. I see him as a man first, and quite a complicated character, before a superhero. You know, superheroes have laser eyes. Superheroes can fly. So, there’s lots of parallels. But as a character, I’ve not seen anyone like him before.

    Richard Madden

He also goes on to highlight how Chloé Zhao’s vision played a key role in his decision, as it is her vision of these characters that added that flair to draw him to the role.

The concept of these characters, and how deep Chloé wanted to go with these people who have been alive for so long, and have experienced so many different things. So that’s what really intrigued me – how these people interact with each other, and also the rest of the world when they’ve seen everything and done everything. That was kind of fascinating.

    Richard Madden

Marvel Studio’s strength was always humanizing their characters. So, Zhao’s vision seems to fit perfectly into the way they’ve approached the MCU. He also teased that he would make a perfect leader for the Avengers, whose existence is still kept unknown to some degree, but confesses he can only make predictions for what the future holds for MCU.

  • Denis Villeneuve May Criticize Marvel Filmmaking But is Excited About Chloé Zhao’s ‘ETERNALS’

Denis Villeneuve May Criticize Marvel Filmmaking But is Excited About Chloé Zhao’s ‘ETERNALS’

It’s nothing new that the popular franchise would draw in negative criticism, especially with directors that focus more on the auteur aspect of cinema. Marvel Studios’ approach has proven successful, but is naturally not without its faults, especially in the earlier days. In an interview with the magazine El Mundos, the following remark was translated by Dune‘s director Denis Villeneuve while promoting his next tentpole film.

There are too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a cut and paste of others.

    Denis Villeneuve

It’s certainly a harsh statement in regard to Marvel Studio’s approach to filmmaking. Still, it’s not the first time this kind of remark has found its way online. Curious enough, there have been some potentially misleading translations surrounding this quote as the context was left out. Michelle Jaworski, a reporter for the Daily Dot, pointed out that the translation may be quite different:

As long as you feel a personality in a project, that it is an artistic object and that there is a will at work, it is not a question of money. But how we approach the cinema. The problem today…Well, if we’re talking about Marvel, the thing is, all these films are made from the same mold. Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but they’re all cast in the same factory. It doesn’t take anything away from the movies, but they are formatted.

    Denis Villeneuve

He then goes on to highlight that the Dune film is a personal one and how he tried to be more mainstream with his approach. The translation does offer a bit more context on it, as it’s less a downplay of Marvel’s films but rather that their approach generally sidelines the director. Ironically, there has been criticism on their Disney+ side where they supposedly take away roles from showrunners. The director has praised Chloé Zhao and even Marvel Studios for breaking their usual mold in an interview for Harper’s BAZAAR.

I’m your biggest fan. I think it’s genius that Marvel approached you because you’re the radical opposite of it aesthetically.

    Denis Villeneuve

As such, it’s less an attack directed at Marvel Studios but rather the current approach to filmmaking that resulted from their success. It’s also come to a point where “Marvel” has become a generalized term for any franchise-focused production by auteurs. He praises Marvel Studios for taking this step and it may be a sign of his hope for a change within the industry.

It’s not an easy discussion and there will be different views on the current state of cinema and Hollywood, especially if you consider the streaming debacle. Zhao‘s upcoming Eternals film is inspired and was pitched with Villeneuve‘s films as inspiration. So, perhaps it’ll echo in a revival of the auteur approach and they find a balance between these different approaches.

  • Lauren Ridloff On Makkari’s MCU Reinvention for ‘ETERNALS’

Lauren Ridloff On Makkari’s MCU Reinvention for ‘ETERNALS’

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Eternals looks like it will stand out from the bulk of the MCU for numerous reasons. In particular, the diversity of the film’s cast and its inclusion of underrepresented groups in superhero roles is undeniably a major move for the franchise. Actress Lauren Ridloff will make her debut as Makkari, the speedster of the Eternals, and the MCU’s first deaf superhero.

In the comics, Makkari is a very different character— a large blonde hearing man. When asked by the New York Times why Eternals took such a different route with the character, Ridloff had this to say:

To be honest, I don’t know much about how they made that decision. But I love that they decided to make Makkari everything he’s not in the comic books — he’s a huge guy, let’s find someone tiny. He’s blond, let’s find someone who has Black hair. He’s a man, let’s go with a woman. He’s hearing, and now the character’s deaf.

    Lauren Ridloff

Ridloff also noted that she feels the pressure and stress that comes with the expectation for her to pave the way for future deaf actors. Asked what she hopes people will take away from Eternals, she responded:

Growing up, I didn’t dream about becoming an actor. I didn’t see myself on the screen. As a little girl, I thought I was one of only a few deaf people walking on this Earth. Now, as an adult, I’m aware there are at least 466 million deaf people and hard-of-hearing people out there. I’m not the only one. And that’s what it means to have a deaf superhero — a lot more people will see a lot more possibility.

    Lauren Ridloff

Notably, the MCU is already set to introduce deaf actress Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo in the upcoming Hawkeye and Echo Disney+ series and even has plans to explore Clint Barton’s AKA Hawkeye’s comic book history of deafness in the former. Marvel Studios’ vital moves to increase and highlight the diversity of its characters in Phase 4 will certainly be featured in Eternals, and Ridloff is no doubt ready to inspire a new generation of superheroes and superhero fans.

  • Chloé Zhao Reveals How Denis Villeneuve’s Films Influenced ‘ETERNALS’

Chloé Zhao Reveals How Denis Villeneuve’s Films Influenced ‘ETERNALS’

Chloé Zhao and Denis Villeneuve participated in an interview for Harper’s BAZAAR to discuss the power of the cinematic experience and their worries with the changes in the industry. They both made no secret of the fact that they appreciated each other’s work, gaining a lot of inspiration from each other.

Villeneuve is well known for his love of the cinematic experience and as he has repeatedly stated that the big screen is part of its language. In this interview, the Canadian director did not hide his support for IMAX, which according to him increases the feeling of intimacy with the characters. Chloé Zhao, whose previous film Nomadland was also screened in IMAX, also shares in that belief. She goes on to say that while pitching Eternals, she used stills from his films. She also mentioned that she has always appreciated creators who have a strong hand in world-building:

Oh, my gosh. Okay, well, I would like to apply for a job on your set to be your assistant. You know, when I went to pitch Eternals, I had stills from your films as references. I’m naturally drawn to filmmakers who have a very strong hand in world building. When I watch your films, even though they’re of different genres, from Sicario to Arrival to Prisoners and then Blade Runner 2049, you managed to build such visceral worlds I can feel and almost touch.

    Chloé Zhao
    Marvel Studios’ Eternals

If you look at the filmography of both directors, you will conclude that they both come from similar filmmaking backgrounds. Both have roots in non-fiction cinema, where they focus on reflective and intimate experiences with their characters. In both of them, one can notice the influence of direct cinema, which has been later successfully incorporated into mainstream cinema.

Although the premiere of Eternals is still ahead of us, promotional materials tease some visual inspirations taken from Denis‘ works. Among others, the Eternals’ ship with its brutalist and austere shape, embedded in the natural landscape, brings to mind the monumental Heptapod ship in a similar aesthetic from Villeneuve‘s Arrival.

  • ‘ETERNALS’ Shares Themes With Chloé Zhao’s Oscar-Winner ‘NOMADLAND’

‘ETERNALS’ Shares Themes With Chloé Zhao’s Oscar-Winner ‘NOMADLAND’

Marvel Studios is starting to venture into new territory with its upcoming projects. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will offer our first martial arts-inspired film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s also the mysterious project by Chloé Zhao, as the Eternals ventures into the long history before the Avengers fought their first enemy. In an interview with Empire, producer Nate Moore teased how the film will reflect the themes she used in Nomadland.

Chloé’s interested in telling stories about outsiders who find themselves adrift in new worlds. Nomadland and Eternals both share that DNA. Nomadland doesn’t have the same bells and whistles as Eternals, but it has the same thematic resonance.

It’s not uncommon for directors to build upon themes and stories they’ve introduced in other films. Sometimes it’s the venture into taking unique aspects on the same topic that showcases their talent in telling stories. Nomadland and Eternals may explore very different types of beings, but it highlights that no matter where we come from, we all can become outsiders in this strange world of ours.

The Eternals promised not to intervene in human history. They are forced to watch how events unfold following the strict orders of their creators, the Celestials. Some have distanced themselves from these beings while others, like Gemma Chan‘s Sersi, tried to connect with humanity. It seems clear that this conflict will lie at the core of the story and it’ll be interesting to see how their decisions may shape the future of the MCU.

  • ‘ETERNALS’ Funko Pop Revealed Including a Jumbo-Sized Celestial Funko

‘ETERNALS’ Funko Pop Revealed Including a Jumbo-Sized Celestial Funko

Just an hour ago, the first Eternals Funko Pop found its way online. It looks like Marvel didn’t waste any time, and the rest got shared by Yahoo. It’s quite an extensive list of Funkos that includes our main cast and the main antagonist, Kro. He’s not the only Deviant in the list, as the four-legged one got included as a GameStop exclusive. The highlight is a jumbo-sized one of their creators, the Celestials, who we saw in the latest trailer towering from the camera’s perspective. Sadly, it looks like the second Celestial showcased is not getting a Funko, but this is just the first wave.

Funko's collection of 'Eternals' figures includes several vinyl Pop! figures and accessories. (Photo: Funko)

Overall, the designs are unique even among Marvel’s usual fare. Curiously, these Funkos offer a better look at the Deviants, who seem to share a very similar visual with light green feet. Their bodies seem like intertwined tentacles, which might even get a story reason. The film is taking a unique direction from the original comics. So, we might be in for quite a few surprises once the film arrives this November.

The Celestial is definitely a highlight. It looks like it might be the same one we saw in Guardians of the Galaxy but without the giant armor. Perhaps we only truly meet these creators of the galaxy in an opening sequence, which sets us up for the story. Even the Funko Pop tries to highlight their very otherworldly designs and it’s sad we don’t get the green Celestial teased in the trailer as well. It would make for a great collection, but who knows if we’ll get more in the future.

  • ‘ETERNALS’: First Look at Sersi Funko Pop Leaks

‘ETERNALS’: First Look at Sersi Funko Pop Leaks

Eternals just released its second and final trailer, giving us another look at
Chloé Zhao‘s century-spanning superhero epic. The film is set to introduce a wide array of new heroes to the MCU. With so many new characters on their way, a wave of Funko products is almost inevitable, especially for a movie of this scale.

A while back we reported on a leaked release list from Funko that included info on upcoming waves of Pops for Marvel, including pops for Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and of course Eternals. A new leak for the upcoming wave of Funko Pops! for Marvel’s Eternals has given us our very first look at one of the figures in that wave, Gemma Chan’s Sersi.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CSzIUH2MnyB/

The figure features Sersi in her traditional Eternals garb and looks to be holding a piece of wood. She’s in the process of using her matter manipulation abilities on it. There currently is no release date that has been set for this or the rest of the wave. With the film’s release steadily approaching, merch and marketing should start rolling out for the film in the coming months.

The list that first featured the leaks surrounding the wave of Eternals figures did not disclose names but did reveal there would be fifteen figures in the first wave. They’ll be joined by a 10″ figure. It’s not hard to tell most of the wave will be made up of the core members of the team like Ikaris, Phastos, Ajak, Makkari, Gilgamesh, Kingo, Sprite, and Druig with the 10″ figure most likely Arishem The Judge who seems to play a larger role in this film.

  • Exploring the Eternals’ Cosmic and Earth-based Future in the MCU

Exploring the Eternals’ Cosmic and Earth-based Future in the MCU

The final trailer for Marvel Studios’ Eternals gives us a closer look at the titular alien race, the Deviants, and even the Celestials. Yet many fans are not only intrigued by the main cast but also how they might fit into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are many questions the trailer still leaves us with, but also some intriguing hints that could be built upon. So using comic runs and promotional materials let’s guess as to where the Eternals might go next.

2021 - Eternals Director arbeitet noch am Final Cut von MCU Movie - Gettotext.com

Created in 1976 by Jack Kirby, the Eternals are tied to the cosmos and Earth. They are a result of Celestial experiments on archaic humanity. Despite being immortals the “minds [of the Eternals] remained all too human” as noted in Avengers #361 Vol 1. This is perhaps where, as Thena suggests in the trailer, their love of humans comes from amidst their long-standing watch over them. As they are pulled in opposing directions between being amongst humanity and learning more about their Celestial creators in the cosmos, we might see our group of ten Eternals split between those different overarching stories of the MCU going forward. This is perhaps even more likely if the film follows some elements of Neil Gaiman‘s (Vol 3, 2006) and Kieron Gillen‘s (Vol 5, 2021) comic runs. What made these two stories stand out was that there’s a betrayer amongst them.

Sersi’s fondness for humans and her romance with Dane Whitman seems to suggest she might be amongst the top candidates to stay on Earth. Sersi was a member of the Avengers between issues #314 (Vol 1, 1990) and #375 (Vol 1, 1994) along with Dane Whitman. It suggests she might have a role to play alongside the cinematic version of Earth’s mightiest heroes. In the trailers, we’ve seen Kingo enjoying life as a famous Bollywood star, meaning he might not have any interest in the isolation of space. It’s not too hard to imagine him being a famous hero on Earth once the Eternals reveal themselves.

First Look At Gemma Chan as Sersi in the 'Eternals' - MCUExchange

Sprite as the Eternal trickster child, who wants to experience fun amongst humans as she does in the 2006 Gaiman run, seems bound to the planet as well. Similarly, Makkari is repeatedly seen saving humans and Phastos’ home setup seems to suggest he has a human family, indicating each of them having a preference for being rooted where they are, regardless of whether they join a team of adventurers or not.

One of the leading candidates for space adventures is Ikaris. Although he volunteers to lead the Avengers in the teaser trailer, it’s also clear that his relationship with Sersi might be changing. Although it has been teased before, thanks to the update that Sersi and Dane are dating in the modern era rather than the past, perhaps might motivate Ikaris to head out into space. He has sometimes shown more reticence than other Eternals to help humans and join the Avengers in the comics. So, it’ll be curious to see whether that translates into the film or whether he goes in search of the Celestials or even others of their race.

Инсайдер раскрыл, когда выйдет трейлер фильма «Вечные» от Marvel

In the most recent comic run by Gillen, Druig is another Eternal who has come under suspicion of being a traitor. In the trailer, it looks like he might be running some kind of a cult in a forest, suggesting he disagrees with how other Eternals have interacted with humans, as earlier character descriptions have suggested. Perhaps his disdain toward humanity might lead to a mission to get involved in the cosmic politics soon to engulf various planets and races of the universe.

There are some Eternals whose destinations are less foreseen. Ajak has often performed the role of the communicator with the Celestials in the various comic runs. Whether she stays on Earth to protect humanity or goes off into space to find out more about their otherworldly masters is an open question. The trailer teases a connection with Ikaris, which might hint at a joint journey. Thena and Gilgamesh have complicated comic histories. She’s been involved with the Deviant leader Kro and even bore him twin children in the comics, while Gilgamesh has been an on-off Avenger. In the trailer, he seems bound to Thena in some way. They are still hiding quite a bit of detail to really pinpoint these character’s future journeys.

Eternals Final Trailer Answers the Thanos Question, Introduces Deviants » UpscGuru.in - Latest News

Even if any of Eternals die, as they have done a myriad times, The Machine, the narrator of the recent Kieron Gillen run, is their resurrection protocol in the comics. It is an artificial intelligence that is composed of and thinks of itself as Earth. This is particularly interesting as EW recently noted that Chloe Zhao “loved the idea of treating the Earth itself as an 11th character in the film.”  Fully introducing The Machine as a disembodied voice for a character could be an intriguing prospect for an antagonist in a sequel.

Another aspect could be how the various other hosts of Eternals that might be on different planets similar to Titan, Thanos’ planet could factor into a sequel. Perhaps we might even see some other Eternals in Thor: Love & Thunder, as Gorr The God Butcher goes on a tour of destruction. Drawing the Eternals team back together again seems like it will again represent a tension between planetary and cosmic conflict.

Final Eternals Trailer Ties Into Avengers: Endgame, Teases New Apocalyptic Event

There are plenty of different places for the Eternals to join various overarching stories on the streets, across the globe, and beyond the stars. Whether it’s keeping to themselves and trying not to interfere again, saving people on street corners, joining The Avengers, or going in search of the Celestials, there are plenty of opportunities for each of them to go in different directions before coming back together for a sequel.

  • New ‘ETERNALS’ Trailer Hints at Earth-X Influence

New ‘ETERNALS’ Trailer Hints at Earth-X Influence

Marvel Studios caught fans off guard with their early morning drop of the first full trailer for their upcoming film, Eternals. The trailer not only showcased the beautiful scenery we’ve heard so much about alongside impressive displays of power from the group, but also seemingly gave a major clue as to what exactly the ancient aliens will be fighting against in the film.

While the trailer finally showcases the Deviants, the changing people who are forever pitted against the Eternals, it also indicates that while they pose a formidable threat, they’re not the biggest threat to Earth. In the trailers opening moments, Salma Hayek’s Ajak explains that when Bruce Banner snapped half of the Earth’s population back into existence, it provided enough for something called “the emergence” to begin. The way the trailer is cut, it’s easy enough to believe that the emergence refers to a new wave of Deviants coming forth to threaten the Earth; however, given the trailer’s heavy emphasis on Celestials and the fact that part of the film seems to be about assembling the team for a larger threat, it seems like a more terrifying, underlying threat may be looming.

Underlying may be the key descriptor for the film’s true threat, if comic book (alternate) history is to be followed. In 1999, Marvel Comics published Earth X, a limited series from creators Alex Ross, Jim Krueger and John Paul Leon. Taking place on Earth-997, Earth X was notable for Ross’ incredible redesigns of several characters who inhabited a wild dystopian possible future. Central to the series’ plot (and potentially to Eternals) was the seemingly crazy idea that the Celestials had implanted an egg at the center of Earth that, after eons of gestating and being protected by the Eternals would “emerge” and destroy the Earth. Interestingly enough, the Celestial eggs are also used to explain why that universe’s Galactus (revealed to be Franklin Richards) gets busy eating planets.

Earth X was enormously popular and spawned three additional series, the most recent having been published in 2020. That said, it’s still relatively unknown, as are the Eternals, so it would provide a wonderful bit of influence for Marvel Studios big screen adaptation. If the “emergence” Ajak is talking about is indeed that of a Celestial emerging from the Earth’s core, the Deviants are going to seem like small potatoes to the team of Eternals.

Eternals is set to hit theaters November 5, 2021.

  • How ‘ETERNALS’ Hints at Thanos’ Revamped Origin for the MCU

How ‘ETERNALS’ Hints at Thanos’ Revamped Origin for the MCU

Finally, the new trailer for Eternals has arrived. It offers a closer look at the unique take on a Marvel Cinematic Universe story. After remaining hidden for centuries, they return to face an event known as the Emergence. Yet, we also get the confirmation that they are only allowed to interact with humanity to protect them from the evil Deviants. It’s the franchise’s way of explaining how they weren’t there to take on Thanos and other world-ending catalysts. The trailer gave us our first look at these twisted creatures that are a far cry from the humanoid figures we’ve grown up with within the comics. Yet, these small details may have confirmed that the Mad Titan has a very different origin from the comics.

Eternals Movie Trailer Reveals Marvel's Ancient Superhero Team In Full Costume - Geeky Craze

Thanos was the son of Eternals A’lars and Sui-San alongside Eros on the moon of Titan. We briefly visited his destroyed home, but it’s still uncertain if the race has a connection to this planet. Thanos’ purple skin turned out to be the result of him carrying Deviants gene. His mother Sui-San feared what he became and tried to kill him. Yet, she got stopped even though she warned them what he might become when he aged. In his early years, he was a pacifist until he fell in love with Death.

So, if he is, in fact, part of the Deviants, wouldn’t that constitute that the Eternals would have to stop him? Yet the designs, even that of the only humanoid Deviant, are far removed from what we know from the race. So, it almost seems safe to say that they won’t explore his direct connection to the Eternals and the Deviants. There are also no signs of others from this race outside of the core group teased in the trailer.

Who are the Deviants? The Eternals' villains explained | GamesRadar+

So, who knows if the Eternals even exist beyond these members, which means Thanos’ parents and family might simply be from the planet Titan. When talking about his past, he implied they lived for quite some time on the planet before it met its untimely end. He could still have a genetic defect that makes him stand out from his race but has no direct connection to the Deviants.

The big question is also why the Eternals can only act when Deviants are involved. It almost seems like the Celestials, who gave them this order, are just trying to hide the genetic mistake they’ve unleashed upon the world. The films didn’t focus much on his past, which we thought might get explored in the Eternals film. Yet, this approach lets them tell a unique take on these characters and the Celestials’ influence over them without treading old ground. In reality, there’s no necessity to connect this race with Thanos.

Comics: Avengers: Endgame; Oni Press & Lion Forge; Stan Lee

As much as the Marvel universe intertwines, we’ve seen them take unique approaches to bring the comics to life. The unique take also opens up the question of how they might approach his brother Eros, also known as Starfox if he makes an appearance at some point in the MCU. We also have rumors that we’ll get introduced to other alien races that are known as “Gods” to humans. Perhaps, their introduction is the set-up to further exploring the concept first introduced with Thor’s arrival on Earth. Either way, it’ll be interesting if the trailers are hiding some details that might connect them after all.
