‘Superman & Lois’ Renewed, ‘Gotham Knights’ Canceled

The CW has opted to renew Superman & Lois for a fourth season, while opting to cancel freshman series Gotham Knights. The news was announced on Monday evening. Both shows, along with All American: Homecoming, were the final shows from the network awaiting renewal decisions following the network’s upfronts last month.

Now under new ownership, thanks to Nexstar, the CW is looking to rebrand and (hopefully) make the network profitable finally. Nexstar took time to evaluate each series – weighing the pros and cons before making any type of decision – and ultimately seemed to look at the views for each series. While Gotham Knights is said to be the cheapest of any DC series over the years, it lacked the audience to justify bringing it back. Superman & Lois, on the other hand, might’ve carried a hefty price tag but also managed to be the second most-watched show on the CW within the past year.

Superman & Lois joins three others shows moving forward from the CW: All American, Walker, and All American: Homecoming. The show, which is returning for its fourth season, is expected to see an episode reduction in season four. As of now, Superman & Lois is expected to have a ten-episode fourth season, down three episodes from season three.

  • ‘Hellraiser’ Star Joins CW’s ‘Gotham Knights’

‘Hellraiser’ Star Joins CW’s ‘Gotham Knights’

DC Studios has been busy reshuffling its future franchise to focus on projects that’ll crossover in multiple ways to establish one unified DC Cinematic Universe. Yet, there are still a few projects too far into development that is still going to see the light of day. We all expected The Flash and the Aquaman sequel to release in theaters, but many were surprised that Gotham Knights was given a series order after all on the CW.

Even going by the first trailer, the project seemed like a far cry from what makes a Batman series what it is. Plus, CW was currently undergoing its own major management shift that’ll reshape the broadcaster’s future endeavors, as they seemingly move away from their usual release schedule. Still, Gotham Knights endured and it looks like we’ll see Hellraiser star Doug Bradley join the production in an iconic DC role.

While he’s not one of the biggest of Batman’s Rogue’s gallery, Joe Chill definitely left the biggest impression given he was the one that killed Bruce Wayne’s parents. He’ll be featured in the upcoming sixth episode, as he is scheduled to be executed after sitting on death row for fifty years. Yet, it seems Gotham’s “Patron Saint of Bad Guys” won’t let his secret die with him. Series co-creators Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux, and Natalie Abrams had the following statement to share on his casting.

When casting the iconic role of Joe Chill, arguably the man who created Batman, there was only one name we considered – Doug Bradley. We needed an actor with the kind of gravitas that would do justice to such a seminal character in DC Comics canon. And who better to embody the role of the classic Gotham fiend than the man whose legendary portrayal of another classic fiend – Pinhead in the Hellraiser franchise — continues to terrify generations of horror fans?

Bradley definitely knows how to leave an impression with his performance, though it does seem like their take on Chill might be quite different from the man we’ve seen many times throughout cinematic Batman history. We’ve seen many variations of the character, one even ending up as Joker himself in Tim Burton‘s original Batman film. So, we’ll see what Gotham Knights has in store for us.

  • ‘Gotham’ Knights Adds Lauren Stamile and Damon Dayoub in Recurring Roles

‘Gotham’ Knights Adds Lauren Stamile and Damon Dayoub in Recurring Roles

There was a time when people thought the CW wasn’t moving forward with Gotham Knights, the story of Bruce Wayne’s adoptive son uniting with the children of Gotham’s iconic villains to take on a new threat after the death of his father. The series is seemingly staying far away from most comic influences and paving its own adaptation but will still include elements from the original.

While most CW series are getting axed currently, it does seem like they are quite busy working on the series by Batwoman trio Natalie Abrams, Chad Fiveash, and James Stoteraux. The series has now added two recurring roles with Lauren Stamile and Damon Dayoub joining the DC project. They will play the parents of Brody March, Lincoln, and Rebecca March. The series showrunners had the following to say about the casting:

We are absolutely thrilled to add Lauren and Damon to our already stellar cast. It’s very fitting for their characters in particular to join our world of Gotham. And while fans of the comics may recognize Lincoln’s name, they should expect some twists in the stories to come.

Lincoln is teased as a “self-made industrialist with designs on becoming Gotham’s next mayor” who has a bit of an obsession with gaining more power. Stamile will be taking on the role of a wife that is trapped in an unhappy marriage but tries to keep up the facade. No further details are given on what to expect from their characters and generally where the series’ overarching narrative might be heading but it’s currently set for a midseason release.

  • First Look at CW’s ‘Gotham Knights’ in New Promo

First Look at CW’s ‘Gotham Knights’ in New Promo

It seemingly took CW little time to get the adaptation of Gotham Knights on the road. Not only did it start production quite swiftly but it even got a production order. Coinciding with the upcoming release of the game with the same name, expectations were high. Yet, we were quite surprised when Oscar Morgan was cast as Turner Hayes, the series equivalent to Dick Grayson. While we got a promo shot, it seems that an actual teaser trailer for the pilot episode has found its way online through SpoilerTV.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-gUHOpRUqc

It’s quite strange that they’d release a 3-minute trailer that seemingly was meant to go online on Twitter given its format. The story seemingly will just instantly reveal that Bruce Wayne is Batman, as not-Dick Grayson tries to find out who was the one that killed his father. After getting arrested alongside other suspects, he is seemingly going to join forces with them to uncover who exactly did it. We get some small hints at these characters’ history, such as Carrie Kelly being called “little Robin” and Duela’s origin as the daughter of the Joker.

The trailer seems like the most CW one of the DC series have ever looked. If it weren’t for the mention of Batman and a brief glimpse at the Batcave later on, it wouldn’t really feel like this is part of a DC-inspired world. We’ll see if perhaps they are holding back for the final episode to reveal these characters’ more heroic (or even villainous) natures to build up the seasonal arc.

  • ‘Gotham Knight’s Ordered to Series by The CW

‘Gotham Knight’s Ordered to Series by The CW

It seemed like the CW was cleaning up, as they’ve started canceling one project after another. Yet, it seems that they still have a few projects in the development pipeline they’ve decided to pick up some of their new pilots. Among them is the new DC series Gotham Knights, which mainly shares the name and premise of the upcoming Warner Bros. Montréal game.

The series joins Walker: Independence and The Winchesters for the 2022-23 season, which are both prequel series from CW’s line-up. Gotham Knights is an original concept that explores Bruce Wayne’s offspring after his father dies and is forced to work with the children of Batman’s villains.

While many expected the sale of existing projects was due to the upcoming Warner Bros. Discovery sale that has been rumored for some time. It seems that Nexstar is currently in the lead to purchase the broadcast network, but that makes it unclear what would happen to its intellectual properties that technically belong to WArner Bros.

They’ve recently been busy canceling various projects, which included their Charmed remake, Batwoman, and even last season’s newest DC addition, Naomi. The latter was quite the surprise for many, as many saw it as a new start to their DC CW slate after various Arrowverse mainstays were leaving. It’s unclear what may happen to Gotham Knights in case a sale does end up happening, but it’s great to see them moving forward.

  • First Look at Bruce Wayne’s Funeral in New ‘Gotham Knights’ Set Photos

First Look at Bruce Wayne’s Funeral in New ‘Gotham Knights’ Set Photos

Filming in Toronto seems like the perfect location to film superhero shows and ensure that set photos find their way online. Just recently, the upcoming CW series Gotham Knights has started production, and we got a few set photos of Gotham City Policy driving through town. Now, it seems a new batch of set photos have found their way online that reveal they are currently busy filming the funeral of Bruce Wayne. Twitter user @greg_tedesco has shared a closer look at the headstone which even teases his perchance of moving in the shadows.

That wasn’t all, as @wmacphail also shared a photo from the set where we can see them filming the funeral of Bruce Wayne. The actors are too far away to see who exactly is attending, but it does reveal we’ll actually get to spend some time with Bruce, or at least that the opening of the series could be his funeral before hell is unleashed on Gotham.

Some time ago, we learned that Oscar Morgan would play an original character that pretty much has the same backstory as Dick Grayson. After the death of Bruce Wayne, whose trailer has been potted, and will also physically appear in the series, his character named Turner Hayes has to unite with the children of Batman’s worst enemies to fill the void that happened after he passed away. As the series just recently started production, we still have some time until we find out how the series adapts this storyline.

  • First Set Photos of CW’s ‘Gotham Knights’ Leak as Production Starts

First Set Photos of CW’s ‘Gotham Knights’ Leak as Production Starts

CW has recently fast-tracked production on a project to adapt the Gotham Knights storyline, as Gotham struggles after the death of Bruce Wayne and a void is left in his wake. Batman’s protégé–surprisingly not Nightwing as initially expected–is forced to team up with the children of his father’s long list of rogue’s gallery. Production has finally kicked off and it didn’t take long for photos to leak from the Toronto set. While we don’t get a first look at any of the actors, we do get a good look at a sequence featuring the GCPD transporting someone, as shared by @Dew_u_c_me:

Luckily @TOFilming_EM also shared a video from the set confirming that the police escort is for someone. There’s a chance that one of the iconic villains might be hidden there, or maybe transferring someone to bring them to safety. We know Mischa Collins has been cast as Harvey Dent and he might be the one in the transport vehicle.

It’ll be interesting to see how they bring this series to life, especially with the concept of the children of Batman’s iconic villains teaming up. They might have multiple seasons in the plan, which opens up the question of what exactly the conflict will be throughout. Either they must team up against the villains pushing Gotham to the brain after the loss of Batman, or maybe an external threat arrives forcing the team-up to keep Gotham from whatever is trying to take over.

  • CW’s ‘Gotham Knights’ Finds its Stephanie Brown

CW’s ‘Gotham Knights’ Finds its Stephanie Brown

It looks like the cats for Gotham Knights is continuing to grow, as The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the CW series has found its Stephanie Brown. All American‘s Anna Lore has joined the production of an already stacked cast that consists of Morgan Olivia, Navia Robinson, Fallon Smythe and many more. They even recently added Mischa Collins, another CW veteran, as the Harvey Dent. Her casting also confirms our piece from February that she would join the production.

The series will explore a Gotham that just went through the murder of Bruce Wayne, as his adopted son must form an alliance with his rogue’s gallery’s kids. Lore‘s Brown is teased as sarcastic but very smart. There’s no word if she’ll embrace her alter ego of Spoiler, as she was the daughter of Cluemaster in the comics. The character has appeared in CW’s Batwoman played by Morgan Kohan. Mae Whitman also voiced the character in the animated series Young Justice.

It’ll be interesting to see who else might get cast for the series, as there are still some open spots to potentially get filled. Gotham Knights is also getting a video game adaptation but with a very different set of characters and storyline, as the only connection is the murder of Batman. It’s also not the only time the character was taken out of comission in some form or another in a CW series, as Batwoman did a similar storyline to keep him out of Gotham. Here’s hoping that Wayne gets one chance to live in one of these series.

  • ‘Supernatural’ Star Misha Collins Joins ‘Gotham Knights’ as Harvey Dent

‘Supernatural’ Star Misha Collins Joins ‘Gotham Knights’ as Harvey Dent

It looks like one major CW star is staying in the network’s family. Misha Collins, best known for longtime role on Supernatural, is joining the upcoming DC pilot Gotham Knights as famed Batman character Harvey Dent. The series, written by the Batwoman creative team of Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux and Natalie Abrams, will focus on the events in Gotham City following the tragic murder of Bruce Wayne. His rebellious son, played by Oscar Morgan, forms a team with the children of Batman’s iconic rogues gallery when they’re all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. Despite sharing creatives, the series will not take place in the Batwoman universe, and has no ties to the upcoming video game of the same name.

Collins took to Twitter to comment on his casting. His joke caption is referring to his well-known role as the angel Castiel, who he portrayed on Supernatural for 12 of 15 seasons. He joins a cast that also includes the aforementioned Morgan, playing an original character named Turner Hayes, as well as Olivia Rose Keegan, Navia Robinson, Fallon Smythe and Tyler DiChiara. The actor is the first major Batman villain announcement for the series, as his character Dent famously becomes Two-Face during the vigilante’s career. It’s unknown if Collins‘ Dent will already be Two-Face when audiences meet him, but whenever it happens, he’ll join a stable of respected actors who’ve inhabited the role, including Billy Dee Williams, Tommy Lee Jones, and Aaron Eckhart.

Gotham Knights does not currently have a release date.

  • ‘Gotham Knights’ Adds Oscar Morgan, Olivia Rose Keegan, and Navia Robinson

‘Gotham Knights’ Adds Oscar Morgan, Olivia Rose Keegan, and Navia Robinson

The CW is kicking off development on yet another DC series with Gotham Knights. The series just recently added Fallon Smythe and Tyler DiChiara to its cast and seems to have found a few more to add. Oscar Morgan, Olivia Rose Keegan, and Navia Robinson have all joined the cast of Gotham Knights, and it seems the series will be adding an original character with Morgans‘ character.

We previously reported the first casting details on the series and believed one of the characters to be Dick Grayson, as the character was described as the adopted son of Bruce Wayne with a similar backstory to the first Robin. Well, Gotham Knights instead created a completely new character named Turner Hayes. It’s unknown if Hayes was Batman’s sidekick or was even a Robin at one point.

Olivia Rose Keegan is set to play Duela, likely Duela Dent and the Jokers Daughter. Duela was born in Arkham and abandoned by her father, described as the most dangerous man in Gotham. Duela trained to become a brutal fighter and excellent thief. In our initial report, we believed one of the characters to be Duela Dent, and it looks like we were on the right track.

Finally, actress Navia Robinson is set to play the role of Carrie Kelly, the Robin introduced in Frank Millers’ Dark Knight storyline. Carrie is described as being fearless and quirky, having talked her way into becoming the Bat‘s newest sidekick. This was the character we initially believed to be Tiffany Fox due to the type of actress the series was looking for.

Gotham Knights will follow the children of Batman’s foes teaming up with his adopted son following the death of the caped crusader and the children being blamed for it. The series will be executively produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, and David Madden with Natalie Abrams serving as Co-executive producer. Danny Cannon is currently set to both direct and executively produce the pilot.
