‘Guardians of the Galaxy ‘ Director Confirms New Awesome Mix for Holiday Special

The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise just wouldn’t be the same without its iconic music. Director James Gunn added a lot of energy to the franchise with his work and made some songs deeply tied to the space-traveling pirates that end up saving the world at random times here or there. With not only a third entry on the horizon but also a Holiday Special, many wondered if both projects may end up getting their own music.

Luckily, James Gunn confirmed that a new Awesome Mix is heading our way with the upcoming Disney+ Holiday Special. There are no details on what songs he might include but given the topic, we might get some fun Christmas and Holiday songs were thrown into the mix that might add something special. Here’s hoping there are even some surprises thrown into the mix that will catch us off-guard.

There’s likely a chance we’ll get a glimpse of the music once the first trailer drops. As it’s definitely heading for a Holiday release later this year, we might not see the official trailer until October given they usually release the first trailer for a Disney+ project around two months in advance. Of course, it’s just a theory but it definitely will be interesting to see how the music for these projects may also differentiate between the Holiday Special and the third entry that’ll follow in 2023.

  • Chris Pratt Praises James Gunn’s Work on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

Chris Pratt Praises James Gunn’s Work on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

One of the most surprising successes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the studio’s ability to draw from the far reaches of their intellectual property and turn those characters into household names. Perhaps the best example of this is the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, which has spawned into one of the most well-known groups in pop culture.

James Gunn‘s 2014 film has become a staple in the MCU and characters like Star-Lord and Gamora have played huge roles in the building of the universe. To say anticipation is high for the third installment, set to be released on May 5, 2023, is an understatement.

The ending of the trilogy has been teased by the cast and director as being quite emotional for some time now. Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord, was asked by Digital Spy in an interview about his thoughts on the third film while promoting his new Amazon series, The Terminal List.

Pratt had high praise for Gunn:

It’s fantastic. [Director] James Gunn just watched a rough assembly the other day. I called him yesterday. We Facetimed, and he’s very, very proud of the work that everyone’s done. He said it’s the best work all of us have ever done. He feels very, very confident. The script was amazing.

    Chris Pratt

But Pratt didn’t stop there. He went on to make a bold claim about the upcoming film as well:

And I can say with utter confidence that he’s made a true masterpiece, and I just cannot wait for people to see it. It’s James Gunn. He did all three movies, which is really rare and really special in the world of big box-office trilogies.

  • James Gunn Further Hints ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ Will Be Drax’s Last MCU Movie

James Gunn Further Hints ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ Will Be Drax’s Last MCU Movie

There have been many theories on how Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3 might wrap up the trilogy that director James Gunn started back in 2014. After a brief delay, the film is only a few more months away before hitting theaters and it’s been hinted at as the final entry of the current version of the Guardians. Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, has also been quite vocal on potentially leaving the franchise behind.

Now taking to his Twitter page, Gunn may have further added weight to the idea that Bautista may be leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe for good after this new entry. While he still keeps the door slightly open he states that “it’s probably Drax’s last movie” and further confirms that the current version of the Guardians will be no more after the events of the film.

It definitely won’t be the same without Drax in this franchise but here’s hoping that he gets a great sendoff in the story. He sadly never truly got to get his revenge on Thanos due to what happened to his family, but who knows what the future might hold for the legacy he leaves behind. Moondragon could still be out there for all we know.

  • James Gunn Teases “Absolutely Ridiculous”Guardians of the Galaxy’ Holiday Special

James Gunn Teases “Absolutely Ridiculous”Guardians of the Galaxy’ Holiday Special

We’ve all wondered how the upcoming The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special might turn out. It’s very different from what Marvel has done before and we’ve already gotten a tease of a more lighthearted storyline with projects like Hawkeye. Its Christmas setting did offer something fun and if James Gunn is anything to go by, it seems that the next Guardians of the Galaxy special will be much of the same.

He talks about the upcoming series in an interview with Deadline, where he reveals that we can expect a “very light and bubbly and fun” Disney+ special. Yet, what truly stands out is that he even describes it as “ridiculous.” So, it looks like he had a blast making it and we might get something very special that makes even the Guardians franchise stand out once again as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Yes, the Holiday Special is very light and bubbly and fun and just absolutely ridiculous, so I think that’s great.

    James Gunn

It’s definitely going to be interesting just how James Gunn interprets a Holiday Special and just how insane it might get with a cast as the Guardians films have. He’s teased some new faces will also appear, and it’s unclear how it might lead into the third part, but it definitely feels like we’ll have a blast watching whatever he and his crew have put together. Who knows if he may accidentally redefine what makes a Holiday Special the way it is.

  • ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Adds ‘Crazy Rich Asian’s Star

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Adds ‘Crazy Rich Asian’s Star

It looks like one more cast member has arrived for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Deadline has revealed that Nico Santos of Crazy Rich Asians and Superstore fame will be joining the threequel. The plot for the third installment remains a mystery and there are no details on who he might be playing, but he’s joining a stacked cast that has added Will Poulter, Chuk Iwuji, Daniela Melchior, and Maria Bakalova in addition to the returning cast from the second entry.

The film is turning into quite a collection of talented actresses and actors. We still don’t know many details about the upcoming project, but it does seem more and more likely that they’ll explore the Halfworld storyline. We saw set pictures that revealed humanoid animals and even teased the arrival of the High Evolutionary. So, we’ll see if the actors are playing some familiar characters from Marvel lore, or even new additions.

There’s a lot of potential with the threequel, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is pretty much the end of James Gunn‘s run with the iconic space pirates. Recent cosmic storylines have started moving into different direction while still staying true to what Gunn set up and we’ll see where the future might be heading with the team as well.

  • ‘Borat’s Maria Bakalova Joins MCU’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ in Key Role

‘Borat’s Maria Bakalova Joins MCU’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ in Key Role

It looks like Borat Subsequent Moviefilm‘s Maria Bakalova has found her next major production, as she has joined Guardians of these Galaxy Vol. 3. The film has wrapped up production some time ago, and she’ll join the production. They also reveal that she isn’t the unannounced actor that was teased by director James Gunn some time ago.

As is tradition, her exact role has not been revealed. She’s not the only recent major addition, as we also heard that Daniela Melchior has joined the third Guardians film. With casting news making its way online, they may be preparing for whatever announcements could be heading our way in the second half of 2022. D23 and Disney+ Day are on the horizon. So, we may get more details soon.

It’s been great seeing Bakalova‘s journey from the breakout hit with the Borat sequel. The Bulgarian actress first started her work in local cinema before grabbing bigger productions such as appearing in Netflix’s The Bubble or Bodies Bodies Bodies. Joining the MCU may be the next major step in her career moving forward.

  • Disney+’s ‘I Am Groot’ Shorts May Not be MCU Canon

Disney+’s ‘I Am Groot’ Shorts May Not be MCU Canon

Here’s a surprise, while it seemed like most of the upcoming projects from Marvel Studios would remain as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they may be twisting that moving forward. X-Men ’97 already hinted at something as part of a different universe, but it seems the I Am Groot shorts might be their own thing as well according to producer James Gunn. While discussing the newly announced release window for the series, the Guardians of the GAlaxy director revealed that they aren’t necessarily part of the “Guardians saga” and went on to further elaborate:

It doesn’t really denounce that these shorts aren’t something that takes place within the larger MCU, but rather that it very likely doesn’t matter to themselves. In a way, it just exists in its own little pocket especially as it explores a time when Groot was during the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It wouldn’t be too surprised if it just exists as its own story that just happens to use elements from the original franchise that it technically takes place in it but still explores its own story without needing to connect.

It wouldn’t be too surprising, however, to see how Marvel Studios starts growing beyond its mainline franchise. They have introduced a multiverse of opportunities and it wouldn’t be too surprising that they start to explore standalone stories within the MCU that aren’t dependent on being part of its main storyline. Plus, these shorts have generally been more independent storylines that focused on telling some cute and funny jokes rather than be an ongoing storyline, as we’ve seen with Olaf quite a bit on his Disney+ journey.

  • Daniela Melchior Set to Appear in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

Daniela Melchior Set to Appear in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

After being at the center of speculation for months, Daniela Melchior has been confirmed to have joined the cast of Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Melchior’s social media activity had fans convinced she would be a part of the expanded cast for the threequel, with many speculating that she would be playing Moondragon, who is canonically the daughter of Drax in Marvel Comics. And while director James Gunn ruled out the idea of her playing Moondragon, he never outright denied Melchior would have a role in the film.

With her casting now confirmed by a Hollywood trade report, speculation will begin anew about who Melchior, who first worked with Gunn on the DC Comics film, The Suicide Squad, might be playing. While there is no guarantee she’s playing a member of the Guardians, rumors have persisted that this film will see a new group of heroes take over for the current team. Should those rumors turn out to be true, Melchior could be playing the MCU’s version of Phyla-Vell (a character who I have heard is due to appear in the MCU), a one-time member of the Guardians and a character with connections to several characters in the larger MCU.

In the comics, Phyla is the daughter of the Kree hero Mar-Vell. The character played a large role in the Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest events and, eventually, wore the Quantum Bands and took on the mantle of Quasar. Speculation has already begun that the bracelet worn by Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel might be one half of the pair of Quantum Bands, and it’s been revealed by Marvel Studios that the changes to Khan’s powers were made to make her inclusion in the upcoming feature film The Marvels make a bit more sense. The inclusion of Phyla-Vell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could put her on the board as someone who might eventually try to lay claim to the bands. All speculation, of course, but sensible.

Melchior joins Chukwudi Iwuji as actors to have worked with Gunn on a DC Comics’ adaptation and make the jump to the MCU. Iwuji, who starred in the HBO Max streaming series Peacemaker, looks to be playing the High Evolutionary, the main antagonist of Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.

  • New ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Crew Merch Teases a New Guardians Logo

New ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Crew Merch Teases a New Guardians Logo

It looks like some more wrap gifts have found their way online from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 productions. While it doesn’t give us any big revelations or teases for the future entry, it does include one rather interesting detail. markmantastic has taken to his TikTok account to share some of the best and worst wrap gifts he received while working on various films. He included in one video a look at a new jacket from Vol. 3 that includes a brand new logo on the sleeve of the jacket, as shared by @dano_cosmic alongside other little details from crew merch.

The original logo seemed strongly inspired by the Nova Corps from the first film, but the updated one has quite a bit more texture to it. There are added elements, but it’s unclear if it finds their way into the actual film. The original log wasn’t highlighted in the first two films, but we did see some set photos of the team wearing an actual uniform. So, it may be part of that as the family unites to face their biggest threat yet. The neon-esque design is also an interesting detail that may be a signifier of which direction director James Gunn is going with the threequel’s visual palette.

It wouldn’t be surprising to have Gunn go all out with this potentially being his last entry in the franchise. So, we might expect the most emotional storyline of them all, which is not an easy task after the gut punch that was Yondu’s death in Vol. 2. The fact Rocket is highlighted in the cap and he’s been a character that’s been heavily highlighted for taking center stage in the upcoming story does continue to add pressure to the many theories surrounding the project.

  • Will Poulter on Playing Adam Warlock in ‘Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ and Beyond

Will Poulter on Playing Adam Warlock in ‘Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ and Beyond

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to conclude what director James Gunn and his crew started all the way back in 2014 with the first Guardians of The Galaxy film. It brought the rather obscure cosmic team into the limelight and made them household names ever since. The third film is set to introduce quite an important character from the Marvel mythos, as Will Poulter is set to play Adam Warlock, a role Poulter says he’s ready to play the long game with.

Poulter sat down with the playlist to talk about his upcoming film The Score, where he was asked about his exciting debut as Warlock in the next Guardians film.

I first auditioned in June of last year [2021], and that was the first time I auditioned, and then I kind of got the role in September, I think. And then started shooting in December… I didn’t know what character , initially, I was auditioning for. I kind of knew sort of closer to the time [of casting] who I was reading for. Although I wasn’t familiar with Adam Warlock beforehand, I was very familiar with the ‘Guardians of The Galaxy,’ and it was king of my favorite ‘planet’ within the Marvel universe, if you like. I’m just a huge fan of the tone and creativity and James Gunn’s work and so many of the actors, you know, that I now I get to call colleagues, which i’m very grateful for. So yeah, to have any kind of part in that world is very, very cool for me.

    Will Poulter

Poulter went on to talk about the future of his character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but revealed he isn’t actually sure where the character is going, only that he is more than happy to stick around for the journey.

I don’t know. I honestly don’t know what’s in store for me. I’m waiting to find out, and that’s the honest truth, but, needless to say, I’d love to sort of go on a journey with that character.

    Will Poulter

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 5th, 2023 with Gunn returning to write and direct. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillian, and Pom Klementieff will all reprise their respective roles.
