  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ is “Truly [a] Sam Raimi Movie”

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ is “Truly [a] Sam Raimi Movie”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness promises to provide a unique experience and tone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After creative differences led Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson to leave the sequel, Marvel Studios brought famed director Sam Raimi on board.

After directing the original Spider-Man trilogy–including the infamous Spider-Man 3–many were surprised to see Raimi taking charge of the mystic and ambitious Multiverse of Madness. Raimi has managed to gain quite the following over the course of his career, particularly for supernatural thrillers and horror films. Because horror seems so far outside of the MCU’s wheelhouse, some have been afraid that Marvel would dampen Raimi’s style and creative freedom. However, Marvel Studios producer Richie Palmer is assuring fans that this is not the case:

When it comes to a movie like this, where we’re incorporating a bunch of different genres, he’s the perfect man for the job, and that’s not even getting to how well he works with a camera or that he’s the master of suspense in his own right. We’re really leaning into those ‘Sam Raimi’ qualities and making this a truly Sam Raimi movie.

    Richie Palmer

Palmer also highly praises Raimi’s work and skill in the Spring 2022 D23 Magazine:

To have Sam Raimi working on this movie is an insane dream come true for all of us… He’s one of the godfathers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For him to pick up the Doctor Strange story after a Spider-Man movie that has Multiversal ties was really exciting for us. There is no one with better instincts. Whether it’s sci-fi, horror, comedy, or romance, Sam is the master.

    Richie Palmer

Raimi’s unique filmmaking style seems to have been highly encouraged and utilized in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. The film’s trailer certainly caught fans’ eyes for its bold style and conjured up plenty of speculation over the movie’s anticipated ambitious and wild story. Raimi fans will have to wait until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness released in theaters on May 6, 2022 to judge for themselves, but it looks like we are in for a treat.

The trailer really gave us an inkling of what’s to come. Visually, it makes this movie feel like a spectacle of epic proportions. The multiple Strange variants and Wanda variants were quite the treat. It leans into some of what we know as far as Wanda being the real villain of the story. Seeing the Ultron bots and what seems to be Charles Xavier and the Illuminati was quite the shot. It was just enough of an appetizer to make us speculate and think what’s next.

One of the bigger questions personally, is we see what clearly seems to be a variant version of Mordo. Where’s the original one? With his plan of no more sorcerers from the end of Doctor Strange, it has to feel like he’ll be in direct conflict with someone like Wanda who’s been studying the Darkhold. To bottom line the trailer, you get the sense that the MCU is in the process of big change. When it’s all said and done you have to wonder if Kang will be waiting at the end to pick the bones of what’s left of this multiverse of madness.

    Filip Manka

The new trailer looks fantastic to me and that board with Sam Raimi’s name on it is not a lie, because indeed his style is evident in this trailer. It was already clear at the teaser trailer that visually the film would be interesting and better than the “standard” Marvel movie, but this trailer has raised the bar and my expectations. It looks insane and conceptually it’s inventive and creative (the shot of Strange’s face falling apart or the zoom in on Wanda’s eye). Moreover, the special effects aren’t plastic this time and look spectacular, at least at the trailer stage, and the improved color grading and photo saturation enhance that layer.

Still my most anticipated MCU movie this year. I’ll swallow the cameos and fanservice, but let’s hope the direction and visuals will deliver because the trailer gave me an appetite for more. Finally, we get Ditko’s weirdness in a proper release. Raimi, I trust you <3

I didn’t expect a full trailer drop during the Super Bowl, but what a way to let people know there’s a big one heading our way. The multiverse opens up many possibilities, and it was uncertain just how much the marketing might lean into it. Luckily, the trailer did exactly that while still offering a grounded focus on Strange as its central figure. The Patrick Stewart tease was fitting, as they leaned into the rumors without giving it fully away. We get small bits of the story here or there, as they still keep America Chavez as somewhat of a mystery. It did add a lot of excitement to its release and I cannot wait to see what the first 2022 Marvel Studios film has in store for us.

    Mary Maerz

I absolutely adore how intense and eerie the trailer is–I think it is worth noting that there is not a single joke or moment of comic relief in the entire thing. The visuals so far look phenomenal and on point with what I would want in a Doctor Strange story. It was no secret that the movie would have horror-inspired elements, but the trailer really showcased that Multiverse of Madness might genuinely have a dramatically different tone than other MCU films. It’s pretty clear that Marvel is putting a lot of importance on this one, which is cool to see for a solo film, and for a film without the traditional A-team MCU heroes. I’m actually so excited! I really think it has the potential to be one of the most visually exciting, adrenaline-pumping, awe-inspiring MCU film. I’m ready for Wanda to go nutty. Mentally unstable, confident, evil-adjacent or adversarial women are vastly underrated. I have yet to see better villains or threats than those.

It did completely hide the ball when it comes to…the plot. I get that it wants to preserve some sort of secrecy, but it is hard to gauge from the trailer if the substance of the movie is going to live up to the grandiosity of the trailer and the potential I think it has. Honestly, I barely care about all the teases and surprise cameos at this point. Maybe it is No Way Home fatigue, but the idea of seeing mostly (I’m guessing) one-off cameos is cool but not something that is going to make or break the film for me. Big cameos are exciting, but less so after Twitter has thoroughly broken down every single one of them, and once they’re revealed, they lose that “wow!” shine pretty quickly. Don’t get me wrong, when we’re talking about a dive into the multiverse, there should definitely be some multiversal characters, but I hope they add quality rather than just fan service quantity.

I loved the trailer! I’ve watched it quite a few times since it debuted, and am still stunned by small discoveries I pick up with each new viewing. I’m fascinated by the fact that the story seems to be building for Stephen Strange from his debut, through other appearances and into this film. I love the themes that seem to be developing around control, corruption and complexities. I can’t wait to see Wanda and the spectacle it seems she will deliver! The trailer gives just enough hints and the things to come without giving too much away. Really intrigued by how it pushes the Marvel Cinematic Universe forward. The sign for whether I really enjoyed a trailer is how much I go back to watch it and whether the music sticks with me and both seem to be the case. In some ways, I can’t believe this film is real. I’m counting down the days until we can buy tickets and then go see it!

    Charles Murphy

Not your run-of-the-mill Marvel Studios trailer…and I love it. Obviously, we’ll have to wait to see the movie until we know for sure, but it feels like Marvel Studios is working hard to move away from their standard fare and to begin creating some truly unique experiences for audiences. This seemingly began with Eternals and will continue with Moon Knight and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That starts with having a director on board with a strong vision and that, in this case, is Sam Raimi. I’d say this trailer looks more like a trailer for a Raimi film than a Marvel Studios film…and that’s just fine with me.

    Dalbin Osorio

    One word: amazing.
Marvel’s decision to give us as much as they did (a Captain Marvel that isn’t Carol Danvers, Patrick Stewart’s Xavier, a Sanctum that looks like it’s residing at the very end of time and may have Kang waiting for Dr. Strange) leads me to believe that a) we don’t know as much as we think and b) we know enough to continue piecing where we are headed.

    Whispers Secret Wars.

The theme for Phase 4 seems to be that our heroes get put through the ringer post-Endgame: as if the fight to save the universe didn’t take enough, you now have Wanda losing Vision again, Strange losing Christine Palmer, and this is after Spider-Man lost MJ. This movie has the distinction of building out three new teams, I’d suspect: the Defenders, Illuminati, and the Young Avengers, all with very distinct missions going forward. The trailer gave us pieces of all 3, and left us with more questions than answers, and in that respect it accomplished it’s mission. Oh, and Professor Xavier has never sounded so regal.

    John Sabato

First of all, Sam Raimi back in the directors chair and on a comic book film is just absolutely perfect. He’s such a bright mind and his filmography is amazing, so this movie is surely going to have that classic Raimi flair.  Multiverse of Madness looks pretty nuts and, based off that new trailer, I feel like it can definitely live up to NWH and even exceed it. I’m definitely even more interested to see Cumberbatch and Olsen return as Strange and Maximoff after the ending of WandaVision. I feel like we’re gonna see a real push forward on the mystical/supernatural side of the MCU and see that expanded like crazy. But what really has me excited is how close the movie is and how we won’t have to spend months and months listening to awful fan theories and “will they wont they” like Superior Iron Man compared to how annoying the lead up to Spider-Man: No Way Home was.

    Joao Pinto

he trailer certainly did its job in hyping up a movie that’ll prove pivotal to the MCU’s future. The Doctor Strange IP has managed to bring us some of the most innovative visuals ever since its 2016 debut, the battle between Strange and Thanos on Titan in Avengers: Endgame and even the Mirror Dimension sequence in Spider-Man: No Way Home. By taking advantage of these insane visual cues the trailer made the movie truly feel like a big cinematic event, that’ll manage to breathe fresh air into the MCU as a whole by moving away from the usual landscapes and moving into whole new realities. These new realities, apparently inhabited by not-so-new characters, are yet another huge draw that the trailer manages to bank on.

I’m personally mostly against bringing specific versions of characters into the MCU that perhaps should have been simply rebooted in this new universe. But the concept of the Multiverse basically permits infinite versions of each reality and/or character, and this allows for the best of both worlds. We now can get iconic actors playing iconic roles that bring the intended emotional resonance to the movie without really needing to bring all the useless baggage from their earlier features. And in that sense, the references to the cameos that we are all sure to get in a couple of months are immensely gratifying, making the trailer a home run on all fronts.

  • New ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Poster Teases Live-Action Debut of Captain Carter

New ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Poster Teases Live-Action Debut of Captain Carter

When Haley Atwell returned to voice Captain Carter in Marvel Studios canonical animated series, What If…?, it wasn’t long before rumors began to swirl that the character would eventually make the jump to live-action. In fact, we even speculated here that the What If…? Marvel Legends wave might have pointed in that very direction. Thanks to the new poster for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans need speculate no longer.

The magnificent new poster for the upcoming film shows what would seem to be the after effects of Strange’s spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home that broke open the multiverse. Among the images reflected on the shards of the broken window of the Sanctum Sanctorum, we can see the shield wielded by Captain Carter in What If…?.

What role will Captain Carter play in the film? Rumors have her among the members of the Illuminati who were revealed in the latest trailer. We’ll all find out together when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6, 2022.

  • FIRST LOOK: New ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Merch Hints at Classic Comic Design

FIRST LOOK: New ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Merch Hints at Classic Comic Design

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is just a few more months away, as Marvel Studios has been busy getting their merchandise out for the upcoming film. We’ve seen a strong focus on the film’s upcoming supporting cast and the tease of the many Strange variants we’ll see in the film. One of them is even strongly inspired by the Defender run of the character. A new piece of merchandise may have revealed another classic comic costume.

A new line from the Titan Hero Series Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch. What stands out is that Strange’s design includes a very familiar blue design that fans of Greg Pak and Emma RíosDoctor Strange: Season One might be familiar with:

For those not familiar, Doctor Strange: Season One was a retelling of the iconic character’s origins. Pak and Ríos gave new life to help new readers catch up on the Sorcerer Supreme’s early beginnings. The cover art featured a blue design that seems to be an inspiration for the upcoming film’s take on the character.

It’s great to see the films pull in more designs from the comics, and it’s certainly a deep cut to pull from. There’s still a chance that the version in this merchandise isn’t the one we’ve been following since the first Doctor Strange film, as we already know it’ll feature a variety of Variants. So, we’ll see if we get a better look once the next trailer releases.

  • New ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Synopsis Teases a Mysterious New Adversary

New ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Synopsis Teases a Mysterious New Adversary

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is right around the corner. With a trailer already released with Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans know some details about the plot of the movie including the introduction to America Chavez, the return of the Scarlet Witch, and a sinister tone accompanying the first trailer.

Ahead of the movie’s launch on May 6, 2022, Marvel has released a new synopsis for the sequel. The synopsis teases “mystical allies, both old and new” and “mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities.” You can read the full synopsis below:

In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

While the movie is only a few short months away, much of it is still shrouded in secrecy. Several leaks have found their way online in various forms but official information has not shown us very much about the conflict or what settings we should expect outside of our MCU Earth we know and love. Considering we are now hearing that we can expect “mind-bending” realities, it feels like we are definitely in for a visual treat. Sam Raimi’s directing should do wonders for this type of story, but we will have to see in May if it pans out.

  • Marvel Legends Packaging Provides the Best Look Yet at ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Variant

Marvel Legends Packaging Provides the Best Look Yet at ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Variant

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see Stephen Strange explore new territory in the MCU when it hits theaters this May. The recent teaser for the film shows Strange exploring the multiverse and, in the process, running into Variants of himself. Recently, one of those Variants, Defender Strange, was revealed by way of a Target Exclusive Marvel Legends figure. Now a new image, first shared by Twitter user @eljaunleon, gives us our best look yet at the Variant.

The Variant of Strange, who was seen briefly in the teaser, is based, at least aesthetically, on the character as he appeared in Matt Fraction and Terry Dodson’s 2011 comic book series, The Defenders. That series, which ran for 12 issues, saw Strange team up with Silver Surfer, Namor, the Red She-Hulk and Iron Fist and ended, ironically enough, with Strange altering time to prevent the destruction of the universe. At the time it was being developed, Fraction teased that the series would “explain everything that has ever happened in the Marvel Universe”, so referencing it in a film that might attempt to do the same seems logical.

The teaser only shows Defender Strange for the briefest of moments, so there’s no telling what his role in the film is or what other Defenders he might or might not be working with in his universes. To know that, we’ll have to wait to see how things unfold when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6, 2022.

  • Xochitl Gomez Strikes a Familiar Pose as America Chavez in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Promo

Xochitl Gomez Strikes a Familiar Pose as America Chavez in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Promo

Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez is set to play a key role in the events of next May’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Chavez, a one-time Young Avenger in the comics, possesses the unique ability to open star-shaped portals in reality, allowing her and her companions to traverse different realities across the multiverse. The character was briefly seen in the recent first look at the film but now, thanks to some new promo art, fans can get a better look at the character who happens to be pulling off a familiar pose.

As you can see Gomez is imitating the pose held by Chavez on artist Jamie McKelvie’s variant cover to 2017’s America #1, written by Gabby Rivera. The character has always been a powerhouse, boasting superhuman strength in addition to her ability to travel interdimensionally. The character has always been a lot of fun on the page as well and she now joins the ranks of fellow comic book Young Avengers Kate Bishop, Billy and Tommy Maximoff and Eli Bradley in the comics. Hopefully we see them team up sooner than later.

  • How The ‘No Way Home’ Mid-Credit Scene Could Lead to ‘Secret Wars’

How The ‘No Way Home’ Mid-Credit Scene Could Lead to ‘Secret Wars’

In 1984, Marvel Comics published Secret Wars, it’s first ever line-wide crossover event and, in fact, the first event of its kind by any comic book publisher. Secret Wars saw all of Marvel’s heroes and villains transported to the mysterious Battleworld by the Beyonder, one of the most powerful beings in the multiverse. The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and hosts of villains, Doctor Doom key among them, were grouped into teams to do battle with one another with the promise that the Beyonder would grant them their every wish should they “slay” their enemies.

It was an incredible premise that sold more copies than anything Marvel had published in 25 years and spawned two direct sequels and, in 2015, another sprawling, line-wide Secret Wars event orchestrated by Jonathan Hickman. In Hickman’s Secret Wars, inhabitants of Earth-616 and Earth-1610 found themselves on an all-new Battleworld after the collision of their respective universes destroyed each of them. Hickman’s event once again featured Doctor Doom but leaned much heavier into the concepts and constructs of the multiverse. At the conclusion of the event, Earth-616 was restored and, for a time, served as the only Earth in the Marvel Universe.

In 2019, it was first brought to my attention that Marvel Studios had an eye on developing Secret Wars. In the two years since, there have been multiple, significant developments on that front. The Russo brothers, who once indicated that it would take an event the size of Secret Wars to bring them back, have entered into negotiations with Marvel Studios to return for an unannounced project; Marvel Entertainment recently made moves to secure the rights to characters featured in the original Secret Wars events; the concept of the multiverse was deeply explored in Loki and head writer Michael Waldron may have tipped us off that the studio was headed in the direction of a Secret Wars project; finally, stories began being told through What If…?, Spider-Man: No Way Home that allowed multiversal variants of characters to begin interacting with one another. And it is one such interaction from the mid-credit scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home that might be the biggest piece of evidence yet that a Secret Wars project is headed our way.

We learn from the mid-credit scene of No Way Home that while most of the characters who came through portals during the miscasting of Doctor Strange’s spell ended up converging in New York City, Eddie Brock spent his time drinking in Mexico and getting a brief history lesson about the heroes and villains of this dimension. When Strange’s new spell sent everyone back where they belonged, a piece of the symbiote was left behind. It certainly doesn’t make any sense given how we saw Strange’s spell work on everyone else, but the symbiote is here and once Peter finds it, it’ll set the stage for Secret Wars.

Marvel Studios has often indicated that they don’t intend to create projects that are direct adaptations of the comic books on which they are based. They are more likely to grab onto catchy titles and moments from those arcs. For example, Captain America: Civil War was nothing like the comic book event but it did recreate an iconic comic book panel. The studio is likely to do the same with Secret Wars and nothing from that event is more iconic than Peter Parker first donning the black, symbiote suit with the large, white Spider logo across the chest.

Getting Parker in the black, symbiote suit is almost certainly a key precursor to Marvel Studios Secret Wars project. so the symbiote fragment being left behind in No Way Home to eventually be found by Parker is the first big step in preparing him for whatever version of the story they choose to tell. As was pointed out during the premiere of No Way Home, Tom Holland’s contract calls for one more appearance in a Marvel Studios film and there’s no bigger project in the works than Secret Wars. It could potentially reunite Holland with the Russo brothers, who introduced his Spider-Man to fans in Civil War and made him a significant player in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Given what we’ve already seen in Loki and what the post-credit scene teaser for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness suggested, the multiverse is going to be in disarray and it’s all but certain that a major battle between universes is in the cards. The pieces are all in place now, including Spider-Man looking the part. All we need now is the official announcement.

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Added New Characters During Reshoots

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Added New Characters During Reshoots

Much was made about the extensive additional photography on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While most people understood it was part of the process, others concocted elaborate fictions about how the extra work on the film spelt doom for the sequel. Over time, however, more and more evidence has surfaced to indicate that the extra time on the film was necessary to accommodate actors who couldn’t work in the UK during the original production time. With the additional work nearing an end, as first reported by Aaron Couch earlier this week, new details about it have surfaced.

According to THR’s Heat Vision newsletter, part of the reason for the reshoots, which wrap up this week, was to include new characters to the film. Inspired by the interactions of multiversal characters and Variants in Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home, the creative team behind the Strange sequel took the opportunity to lean heavily into the multiverse angle and include “more cameos and character introductions.”

Given how much the opening up of the MCU multiverse changes the game, there’s no telling what prior iterations of characters might show up. It would seem the Fox X-Men (maybe even Deadpool) and Fantastic Four films, Marvel Studios animated series What If…?, Netflix’s Defenders-verse series and Sony’s Spider-Man films would be ripe for the picking, along with pretty much any and every Marvel property ever put to screen, animated or live-action. True believers, it’s a great time to be alive.
