Sacha Baron Cohen Confirmed for ‘Ironheart,’ Larger Role in MCU

Over the weekend, a rumor surfaced suggesting Sacha Baron Cohen had joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as none other than Mephisto. Now, Deadline has seemingly confirmed that Cohen has joined the MCU and that he is, in fact, playing Mephisto. The outlet also suggests Cohen will appear in other titles within the MCU. The outlet also goes on to speculate that Cohen’s Mephisto could appear in the WandaVision spinoff, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, although that is not confirmed.

Cohen is, of course, best known for his role as Borat. However, the actor has built up quite the resume over the years beyond Borat. He’s appeared in Alice Through the Looking Glass, The Brothers Grimsby, and Les Misérables.

Ironheart, which consists of six-episodes, hails from head writer Chinaka Hodge and stars Dominique Thorne as Marvel character Riri Williams. • RUMOR: ‘Ironheart’ Adds Another Magic User and Ally of Doctor Strange

RUMOR: ‘Ironheart’ Adds Another Magic User and Ally of Doctor Strange

Marvel Studios upcoming Disney Plus streaming series Ironheart continues to shape up to be the MCU’s first really magic vs. tech battle. Kevin Feige announced Anthony Ramos as the series’ main antagonist, Parker Robbins, aka The Hood, at D23 and a recent rumor that Sacha Baron Cohen will appear as Mephisto continues to gain traction as more sources chime in on its legitimacy. With two major magic users in her way, it would stand to reason that Riri Williams might need some help understanding just what she’s up against and a new rumor might point in the direction of just that kind of ally.

According to Geek Vibes Nation, actress Regan Aliyah, who joined the cast at the end of August, is set to play Zelma Stanton in Ironheart. Stanton is a relatively recent addition to the Marvel Comics’ universe, having been introduced in 2015 at the beginning of Jason Aaron’s run on Doctor Strange. Shortly after meeting Strange, Zelma agreed to work at the Sanctum Santorum as his librarian. More recently, Zelma has appeared in Strange Academy, a series in which Strange and some of the most powerful magicians in the Marvel Universe have opened a school for young magic users.

At this point, we can only speculate as to what Zelma’s role in Ironheart might entail, but it does seem likely she will be assisting Riri as she learns about magic and takes on The Hood and the powerful demon Mephsito. As is often the case for characters adapted into the MCU from the comics, Zelma’s origin story might be changed a bit to allow for her to hop right into the action. Whatever the case, for a show featuring a tech genius, Ironheart is becoming very magic-heavy and very interesting.

  • A Fun New Rumor Suggests a Much Talked About Character Will Debut in ‘Ironheart’

A Fun New Rumor Suggests a Much Talked About Character Will Debut in ‘Ironheart’

Marvel Studios Ironheart will introduce one of Marvel Comics’ most ruthless villains to the MCU: Parker Robbins, aka The Hood. Anthony Ramos will be playing Robbins and was introduced at D23 by Kevin Feige, though little was revealed about his origins or motivations. Footage from Ironheart did, however, show a very comic-accurate-looking cloak on The Hood and a new rumor indicates that its origins may be a bit less comic-accurate.

According to My Time to Shine Hello, Robbins’ cloak, which is the source of many of the magical powers he wields in the comics, will be connected to the demon Mephisto. In the comics, the cloak originally belonged to Dormammu, who used it to possess Robbins at one point. With Mephisto filling the role, it’s likely that Ironheart will feature Mephisto, the Great Corrupter, sinking his claws into Robbins and making a deal for his soul, as he does.

Fans have believed Mephisto was going to appear in every Marvel Studios’ project for the last several years and no doubt some of them will pound their chests to tell you that they were right; however, finally introducing the Master of Malice to the MCU opens up a wealth of new stories that can be told, including the long-gestating Ghost Rider project and a comic-accurate origin for the Silver Surfer!

An additional rumor suggests that the actor bringing the Dread Persuader to life in the MCU will be Sacha Baron Cohen. While Cohen is most well-known as his wild antics Borat, Ali G. and others, he recently received praise for more serious work in Netflix’s The Spy and was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in The Trial of the Chicago 7, his third nomination as he was also nominated for the screenplay of both Borat films.

Cohen’s versatility as a performer makes him a fascinating choice for Mephisto, should the rumor prove to be true. A deal to play Mephisto would likely keep the Cohen busy for quite some time because, as comic fans know, Mephisto has found himself in just about everyones’ business at one time or another.

  • ‘Brown Girls’ Actress Sonia Denis Joins Marvel Studios’ ‘Ironheart’

‘Brown Girls’ Actress Sonia Denis Joins Marvel Studios’ ‘Ironheart’

Ironheart‘s cast continues to grow as time goes by. Once again, our latest update to the upcoming Disney+ series from Marvel Studios includes a new cast addition. This time around the Brown Girls actress Sonia Denis has seemingly joined the cast, which will see Dominique Throne return to the role of Riri Williams after her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever next month.

Story details on the sequel are still scarce, as it’ll explore Riri’s time building the most advanced suit of armor that the MCU has seen since Iron Man. Yet, we do get hints at her already doing so in the Black Panther sequel, which raised many questions if this might act as a prequel series. Of course, there’s also the chance that she might not have the energy source capable of keeping a new suit going, which leads to her experimenting.

Tony Stark was no stranger to building a massive amount of suits for different situations. So, why wouldn’t Riri Williams do the same? The only tease we got from the series was the confirmation that Anthony Ramos is taking on the role of The Hood, which may add a magic vs. technology angle to the series. It definitely would make it stand out from other projects and offer a new perspective on how to tell a story about high-tech suits.

  • ‘Ironheart’ Headed to the Windy City to Continue Production

‘Ironheart’ Headed to the Windy City to Continue Production

Comic book fans know well how important of a setting Chicago is to Riri Williams. And while Riri might not spend a lot of time there when she appears in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the Windy City will be featured when Ironheart streams in 2023. According to a new report, residents of Chicago might want to be on the look for Marvel Studios cast and crew to move in at the end of October.

The bulk of production on Ironheart is already in the books, having taken place in Atlanta over the last few months. As the production’s time in Georgia winds down, Screen Magazine has learned that Marvel Studios is set to begin work in Chicago “on or near October 24th.” Interestingly enough, Sam Bailey, who was brought on board as one of the Ironheart’s directors, is a Chicago native. Though it’s unclear which episodes will take place in Chicago or whether or not Bailey will helm those, it would make for a nice touch and lend an extra touch of verisimilitude to the project.

In the comics, Riri Williams was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. Identified as a genius at a young age, Riri turned her garage into a laboratory and lived a fairly happy, though introverted life. At the age of thirteen, however, tragedy struck while at a family picnic at Marquette Park. Given the production is headed to Chicago rather than trying to rebuild parts of it in Atlanta, it’s likely that at least some of the series might feature flashbacks to this time in Riri’s life and choose to shoot on location.

Riri Williams will be seen this November in theaters in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever before heading to Disney Plus in Ironheart!

  • New ‘Wakanda Forever’ Merch Offers Closer Look at Comic-Accurate Ironheart Armor

New ‘Wakanda Forever’ Merch Offers Closer Look at Comic-Accurate Ironheart Armor

Many were surprised when the first look at Ironheart’s armor in Riri William’s first live-action debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever looked nothing like her original comic armor. With her sweet to have her own Disney+ series in the near future, it would’ve made sense to build up to the more comic-accurate design. At least that was until a new merch leak revealed a more comic-accurate design.

While it was a shame that it was spoiled instead of kept as a surprise during Wakanda Forever‘s theater run, that has become the norm when it comes to merchandise early releases. Still, the design looks great and stands out even though many worried it be too close to that of Tony Stark’s iconic Iron Man armor. It also seems she’ll use some new types of weaponry at her disposal as first seen in the images shared by @CeeOfCreativity on Twitter.

We’ve technically never seen the weaponry that she’d rely on and it seems we shouldn’t expect a copy of the arc reactor-based attacks like the Unibeam. She’ll likely make use of what Wakanda has to offer that’ll also help her more quickly develop the armor. So, we’ll likely see different test versions throughout the film until she gets the final design.

It does open up the question if the upcoming Ironheart Disney+ series will act as a prequel, or if she simply doesn’t have the right energy source to keep this armor going for a long period of time. So, she tests out other types of armor to have other options at hand, or perhaps she’s one of the reasons that Armor Wars‘ storyline kicks off with her actions in the sequel.

  • D23: First ‘Ironheart’ Footage Teases Tech vs. Magic, Anthony Ramos Confirmed as The Hood

D23: First ‘Ironheart’ Footage Teases Tech vs. Magic, Anthony Ramos Confirmed as The Hood

D23 has kicked off its Marvel panel in style and it seems that director Ryan Coogler wanted to jump right into his next Marvel project, the Disney+ series Ironheart. Not only that, it seems they even brought some footage for attendees to tease what the new project has in store alongside a (finally) updated loog for the series.

Anthony Ramos is also confirmed that he’s playing The Hood but teases he’s not quite an evil character. It seems he may have a good heart but ends up taking a deep dive into a dark place at some point in the series. The series is still being shot and people are highlighting that it looks great from the showfloor.

  • CONFIRMED: Shakira Barrera Has Joined ‘Ironheart’

CONFIRMED: Shakira Barrera Has Joined ‘Ironheart’

Back in May, we here at Murphy’s Multiverse speculated that actress Shakira Barrera had joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ Ironheart. Now, thanks to Deadline, we can confirm that Barrera has been cast in the series. The outlet reports that she will star as a series regular, although further details regarding her role are unknown.

The actress joins the previously announced Regan Aliyah, Anthony Ramos, Manny Montana, Alden Ehrenreich, Shea Couleé, and Zoe Terakes. Ironheart hails from head writer Chinaka Hodge and stars Dominique Thorne in the titular role. Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes are directing the series, while Black Panther‘s Ryan Coogler is producing the series through his Proximity banner.

Barrera is perhaps best known for starring in the Netflix series, GLOW, as Yolanda Rivas. She also had a guest role on ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Agent King in Season 7. More recently she has appeared in shows such as Animal Kingdom, Shameless, and All Rise. On the film side, Barrera has The Knocking coming up where she’ll star alongside Zelda Williams, Doug Jones and Christine Ko.

Production on Ironheart is currently underway in Atlanta with the series expected to hit Disney+ sometime next year.

  • Regan Aliyah Joins Marvel Studios ‘Ironheart’ Disney+ Series

Regan Aliyah Joins Marvel Studios ‘Ironheart’ Disney+ Series

While Ironheart has been in production for some time, it looks like their casting announcements aren’t taking a break anytime soon. Deadline has just reported that XO‘s Regan Aliyah has joined the upcoming Disney+ series in an unknown role. There’s no word how big her role might be, but she’s joining a stacked cast that includes Dominique Thorne as Riri Wiliams, Alden Ehrenreich, Anthony Ramos, and many more.

The series is shaping up to be one of the MCU’s most interesting, especially with recent reveals adding a few curious questions on how it connects to the wider MCU storyline. Leaks seemingly hint at her iconic armor being showcased in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever while set photos hinted at her still working on one during the Disney+ series as it has a much bulkier design in comparison.

There have been theories that perhaps this show acts as a prequel leading into the event of the upcoming film, which would be a first. WandaVision was released ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness so it would connect to the series. Yet, this would be the first case that a series explores a character’s story before they joined the silver screen. Of course, we don’t know yet and can only theorize but it’ll be interesting to see once we get a first look at the series.
