Jodie Turner-Smith Has NOT Joined ‘Kraven the Hunter’ as Calypso

It was back in July when first rumors made their way online that actress Jodie Turner-Smith would take on the role of Calypso Ezil in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff, Kraven the Hunter. It turns out those rumors were not true, as The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit confirmed that she has not joined the cast after running the story of Russell Crowe joining the project. It’s uncertain if they are still actively looking to find an actress to take on the role of Calypso, but it was pointed out most of the parts will consist of Kraven’s extended family.

Calypso is a voodoo priestess who had a lot of joy in manipulating Kraven and was one of the causes that led to his eventual suicide. Her powers were derived from sacrificing her younger sister which gave her the ability to control Curt Conners. She was one of the few people that almost managed to kill Spider-Man, but he managed to survive and take her out. Yet, she was seemingly dead until she would make a return in trying to resurrect Kraven and ended up facing off against Daredevil.

  • Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Adds Russell Crowe

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Adds Russell Crowe

The upcoming Kraven the Hunter film is starting to prepare for production, as it is currently eyeing a release on January 13th of 2023. As such, it seems the production has finally started expanding its cast and the first to join is no other than Maximus himself, Russell Crowe. His role is still unannounced, but it seems that most of the cast will consist of Kraven’s family members, which might flesh out the character in curious ways. It may be a hint that we’ll explore most of the character’s childhood and find out what turned him into the greatest hunter there ever was.

J.C. Chandor will direct the upcoming film that is based on a screenplay by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk. Long-time Spider-Man producer Avi Arad is also returning alongside Matt Tolmach. The details still remain uncertain about the project and just how they aim to tackle the character’s origin story. It continues Sony’s focus on expanding Spider-Man‘s franchise without the titular wall-crawler. So, who knows if they might embrace a crossover with the Sinister Six.

We’re still awaiting the release of Morbius which has been confusing viewers on its continuity due to the trailer including references from across the Spider-Man franchises. They have also recently started work on a Madame Web-focused film, which is still a curious addition to their offerings. Though, it is the same company that wanted to explore an Aunt May origin story.

  • Murphy’s Murmurs: ‘Kraven the Hunter’

    Murphy’s Murmurs: ‘Kraven the Hunter’

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter is currently set to release on January 13, 2023 and it’s been some time since fans have had any updates on the film. Outside of the film’s star, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and director, J.C. Chandor, details on the film have been hard to come by. That all should be changing rather soon, however, as it looks like things are set to get started on the project.

Production start dates have always been tentative and now, more than ever, it’s important to keep that in mind, but assuming no delays, it sounds like Kraven the Hunter will begin production in the UK next month. Given the film’s January 2023 release date, it’s a very sensible timeline for principal photography, leaving plenty of time for any additional photography, which is always factored into these projects.

Taylor-Johnson has taken his prep for the role VERY seriously. As fans of the comics know, Kraven is a physically imposing specimen, carrying well over 200 pounds on his frame and having enough strength to tangle with dangerous foes even before he was enhanced through the potions of the voodoo goddess Calypso, who is rumored to be played by Jodie Turner-Smith in the film. Should they follow the comics and juice up the character, he’d be superhumanly strong and word is that Taylor-Johnson has done the work to look the part, having gone to great lengths to transform his body for the role.

Fans caught a quick tease of the character in last act of Spider-Man: No Way Home and with the multiverse now in play, it probably won’t be long before one of the Spideys finds himself tangling with Kraven, giving Sony the chance to adapt The Last Hunt, something that has been discussed and teased as long as there’s been rumors of a Kraven film. We’ll see what role Spidey has to play in the expanding Sony universe and which actor will fill that role.

  • REPORT: Sony Eyeing Jodie Turner-Smith as ‘Kraven the Hunter’s Calypso

REPORT: Sony Eyeing Jodie Turner-Smith as ‘Kraven the Hunter’s Calypso

It’s gotten quiet on the Kraven the Hunter front. It’s been two months since Aaron Taylor-Johnson joined the project as the titular villain. The film is eyeing a release in 2023 but Sony has been rather quiet overall during the pandemic. Illuminerdi did run a story that they are interested in adding the Russian master of disguise Dmitri Smerdyakov. Marvel fans will instantly recognize the pedestrian name of the Chameleon, who is related to the infamous hunter. It looks like they got one more bit of news, as the film is eyeing Jodie Turner-Smith in the role of Calypso.

Turner-Smith has been building up her career throughout the last few years which includes appearances in 2017’s The Last Ship, 2019’s Queen & Slim, and 2021’s Without Remorse. She recently starred in the Channel 5 psychological thriller Anne Boleyn. She would take on the role of Calypso, the Haitian voodoo priestess. In the comics, she sacrificed her younger sister to become more powerful and pushed Kraven into his madness. The character first premiered in Amazing Spider-Man #209 in 1980.

We still know very little about the upcoming film. It’s uncertain how they’ll tackle the character, who has strong ties to Spider-Man. There’s always a chance that Sony wants him to appear in the film, which may act as Kraven’s origin story before he became obsessed with the friendly neighborhood spider. They might even connect his franchise to Venom, which would add a very unique flair to the character’s obsession with defeating the strongest beasts.

  • RUMOR: ‘Kraven the Hunter’ to Face Off Against Chameleon

RUMOR: ‘Kraven the Hunter’ to Face Off Against Chameleon

The Spider-Man franchise continues to expand but not in the ways many expect. Sony has been quite eager about exploring new ventures by exploring individual stories surrounding the webhead’s vast amount of characters. Now, they aren’t necessarily connected to Tom Holland’s incarnation of the character, but we’ve already seen their work with Venom and the upcoming Morbius. Sony has now set its eyes on an adaptation of Kraven the Hunter‘s story with Aaron Taylor-Johnson cast in the titular role. It seems that wasn’t all, as Illuminerdi shared that the Chameleon, better known as the Russian master of disguise Dmitri Smerdyakov, will be a villain in the upcoming spin-off.

They couldn’t offer any details outside of his potential inclusion. They are currently looking for someone in their thirties to take on the villainous role. It is uncertain if he’ll have to contend with others or if he’ll be the sole adversary of the film. The character actually has some connections to fellow Russian, as he was his half-brother in the comics. So, they might explore this aspect in the upcoming film.

It is also unknown if he’ll have his iconic face mask and switch between them, or simply act as a mastermind in the background. It is most likely not connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe directly, but they might utilize the technology introduced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier that allowed someone to replace their face. They could also give him a unique visual to make the character stand out, especially if Sony might do their own thing with this spin-off. Whatever direction they end up taking, it’s going to be curious to see how they adapt these characters without their common foe.

  • Aaron Taylor-Johnson Cast As ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Film Set for 2023 Release

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Cast As ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Film Set for 2023 Release

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has nabbed a surprising new comic book role. The actor will play Kraven the Hunter in his live-action debut, a solo film being produced by Sony. The news comes from The Wrap, who also claims the former MCU actor is signed for multiple pictures as the famed Spider-Man villain. Taylor-Johnson is best known for his prior work on comic-based properties, having portrayed Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron and the titular character in both Kick-Ass films. He also appeared in 2014’s Godzilla and played a small part in Christopher Nolan‘s Tenet.

Sergei Kravinoff is one of the few iconic Spider-Man foes to never appear on the big screen, despite multiple attempts. He is traditionally portrayed as a Russian big-game hunter with a demented Spidey obsession, refusing to quit until he has captured his prey. His most famous character arc, Kraven’s Last Hunt, is often cited as one of the greatest comic stories ever told. The developing film is being billed as the next chapter in Sony’s Marvel Universe, following their other villain-centric films Venom and Morbius. It was revealed that Kraven was next in line for the solo treatment last year, to the surprise of many fans who believed he’d appear as the antagonist in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Kraven the Hunter is set to be directed by J.C. Chandor, known for his work on Netflix’s Triple Frontier, for release on January 13, 2023. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway wrote the script alongside Richard Wenk. Long-time Sony producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are also attached to work on the project.

  • Sony Eyeing Keanu Reeves for Unspecified Role in ‘KRAVEN THE HUNTER’

Sony Eyeing Keanu Reeves for Unspecified Role in ‘KRAVEN THE HUNTER’

    The Hunt Begins.

Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven the Hunter. A fierce huntsman from Russia and one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes in his comic book history. He prides himself on the thrill of the hunt and is quite the honorable villain when compared to the rest of Spidey’s rogue gallery. By now, you might have heard that Sony Pictures is moving forward with the production of a solo spin-off film for the famed hunter, set in their own cinematic universe: Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (or SPUMC for short). J.C. Chandor was brought on to direct the film last August so now the question remains as to whom Sony might be considering for the role of the Russian antagonist. And it seems they’ve got their sights set on closing in with a certain boogeyman to fill his shoes.

That’s right. Keanu Reeves is apparently being eyed by Sony Pictures for a role in the film. The rumor comes from DeuxMoi’s Instagram story, seen here below. Unfortunately, there is no information about whether they are looking at Reeves for Kraven or another character.

At this point, it almost feels like a joke with people fan-casting nearly every character with either Keanu Reeves or Tom Holland, but picking Reeves for the role of Kraven the Hunter would be an interesting choice. We’ve already come to expect the type of range Keanu can provide in terms of his acting skills, and with his recent roles in the John Wick franchise, it seems that he might be quite the fit to play Sergei Kravinoff, should that be the role in question.

  • ‘Kraven, The Hunter’

    ‘Kraven, The Hunter’

    Premiere: October 6, 2023

After being in development for years, Sony moved forward with Kraven the Hunter in August of 2020 when director J.C. Chandor came on to the project with Richard Wenk writing.

In what was seen as an unexpected move, Aaron Taylor-Johnson was cast as Sergei Kravinoff / Kraven himself in late May 2021. This will mark Taylor-Johnson‘s return to comic book adaptations after a short stint as Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron and as Dave Lizewski in the Kick-Ass duology.

Early 2022 saw a couple of names being added to the cast, with Russell Crowe being the clear stand-out. The Academy Award winner will play an, as of yet, undisclosed role. A few weeks afterward it was Ariana DeBose who joined the project as voodoo priestess Calypso, alongside Alessandro Nivola who will play the movie’s main villain. This character’s name hasn’t been announced at this point.

Four months ahead of its January 2023 release date Sony decided to push the project back a further ten months, with the premiere now set for October of the same year.

    Cast

    • Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff / Kraven
    • Russell Crowe in an unknown role
    • Alessandro Nivola in an unknown role
    • Ariana DeBose as Calypso
    • Fred Hechinger in an unknown role
  • Sony Eyeing J.C. Chandor to Direct ‘KRAVEN THE HUNTER’

This is interesting! A trade report from Deadline indicates that Sony has lined up J.C. Chandor, who wrote and directed the Netflix film Triple Frontier, for their Kraven the Hunter solo project which will be set in their universe. A Kraven solo movie going forward at the moment is interesting given the ongoing speculation that the character would feature in the third MCU Spider-Man film.

Writer Says His 'Kraven The Hunter' Movie Will Include A Showdown ...

The news, which comes one day after Olivia Wilde was named as the director of Spider-Woman, continues to raise the question of just what relationship Sony’s Marvel films will have to Marvel Studios films going forward. As interesting of a character as Kraven is, it’s really difficult to imagine a series of Kraven films without Spidey (just as hard as it is to imagine a series of Venom films without him). Chandor will work off of a script by Richard Wenk which Sony has had ready for some time.
