First CinemaCon Footage Description of Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Finds its Way Online

It looks like Sony did have something special for visitors of CinemaCon, as Sean O’Connel shared some details on footage that was shown from their upcoming Spider-Man spinoff film, Kraven the Hunter. Even though it just recently started production it seems they already had a little teaser ready for visitors. He shared it on his @WGreatPowerBook Twitter profile on a book covering Sony’s adaptations of the franchise.

In his Twitter post, he highlights that it was a rather brief sizzle real showing Aaron Taylor-Johnson hanging on to a car, which was first revealed in leaked set photos not too long ago. It seems that they also showed the new logo, but he seems to believe they might release something online. For now, we’ll have to wait and see if that’ll get released.

We’ll see if they actually will share anything from the project online, but it seems too early to tease anything. The only thing they might do is share the first logo for the project, similar to getting the Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse logo after they retitled the project. Still, it seems they are certainly moving full force with the project.

Kraven the Hunter is quite an interesting project, as it’s unclear how exactly they are building up their anti-Spider-Man team out of Morbius‘ post-credit sequence. He very likely won’t have a role in this film. So, it makes you wonder how they are trying to set up an anti-hero version of the Sinister Six that is still out to take down the webhead.

  • THEORY TIME: Russell Crowe May Be Playing the Villain Grim Hunter in ‘Kraven the Hunter’

THEORY TIME: Russell Crowe May Be Playing the Villain Grim Hunter in ‘Kraven the Hunter’

Sony is now three movies into is shared universe of Marvel Characters, and for the most part, they’ve all been pretty much the same thing. In Venom, the title character learns to control his abilities and accept his destiny while doing battle with a more sinister version of himself. In Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the title character once again learns to control his abilities and accept his destiny while doing battle with a more sinister version of himself. Finally, in Morbius, the title character learns to control his abilities and accept his destiny while doing battle with a more sinister version of himself. After spending several full minutes studying this pattern and dissecting what may come to be known as “The Sony Formula,” only a single conclusion could be truly reached. In Kraven the Hunter, the title character will likely learn to control his abilities and accept his destiny while doing battle with a more sinister version of himself.

The real question surrounding the next big Marvel-Sony project is who that “more sinister version” of the anti-hero Kraven will be to fight the titular character. Aside from the Venom sequel’s inevitable use of Carnage, the SonyVerse has had to make a couple deep pulls to materialize antagonists for its solo Spider-Villain movies. The symbiote-heavy stories at least have a handful of “Venom but worse” baddies to choose from, but Morbius literally had to create it’s own original character in order to satisfy the “Sony Formula” developed in the studio’s screenplay labs. As if further proof is needed of the plot recipe’s existence, Matt Smith was originally announced as playing the very minor comic malefactor Hunger before his role was morphed into something that more closely resembled Jared Leto‘s protagonist. So, if one were to try a guess at who the currently-unrevealed villain of Kraven is, they would probably be best off looking for an obscure Spider-Man criminal with a power that reflects the lead’s own skill set. Enter: Grim Hunter.

In the comics, Sergei Kravinoff is somewhat of a family man. He spawned four children with his lover Sasha, all of whom grew up to be problems for either Spider-Man or Kraven himself. The oldest son and firstborn child, Vladimir, aspired to be as good of a hunter as his renowned father, and eventually dabbled with an experimental elixir enough to make it almost all the way there. Once at full power, he named himself the “Grim Hunter” after a legendary warrior he was told stories about as a boy, and went after Spider-Man. He would ultimately be killed in battle by Peter Parker’s clone Kaine, revived decades later by his mother in the form of a humanoid lion-like creature, and then be killed again by his father for not living up to the family name. It’s a lot to take in, but it’s probably just enough for Sony to use as the basis for a solo Kraven film.

The problem is that story doesn’t make Sony’s “bad guy who’s also sort of good” come off in the best light, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson seems a little young to be a guy with a fully grown son. This is where Russell Crowe comes in. Back in February, the famed actor was cast in a mystery role for Kraven the Hunter that The Illuminerdi claimed would be Nikolai Kravinoff. Though whether or not this is true remains to be seen, having Crowe as the father of the eponymous Hunter would help to fill in a few blanks where the movie’s antagonist is concerned. While he was never a major player in any specific comic book stories, Nikolai was instrumental in shaping who Sergei would become. He was an abusive dad, who tormented Sergei and his half-brother Dmitri (a.k.a. Chameleon, set to be played by Fred Hechinger in the movie) before dying and leaving the boys orphaned. This life aspect seems like an easy inclusion for the writers trying to make their hero sympathetic, and the recent casting of Levi Miller, who looks an awful lot like a young Taylor-Johnson, suggests that fans might be treated to some flashbacks over the course of the film.

Of course, Sony wouldn’t get someone as talented as Crowe for a few simple flashbacks, which indicates Nikolai could potentially have a bigger role in the plot than comic book history implies. In fact, it seems likely that Sony could take the comic relationship between Sergei and Vladimir and flip it on its head, casting Nikolai as the legendary “Grim Hunter” and Sergei as the firstborn son trying to live up to his father’s legacy. Doing this would give Taylor-Johnson‘s Kraven a reasonable motive to become the world’s greatest hunter, and the unavoidable climax in which Kraven defeats his crazed poppa and vows to be a Hunter with more honor than him would do wonders in portraying the titular character as more anti-hero than a straight villain.

The one broken cog in this theory is Christopher Abbott‘s The Foreigner. Recently announced as a villain in the film, the character fits the bill of “wildly obscure Spider-Man villain with abilities similar to the protagonist.” He’s a master assassin in peak physical condition and an expert martial artist. And unless that character is also dramatically altered, there isn’t much there in the way of emotional conflict between him and Sergei. Perhaps they are both after the same target, but even that seems like a weak central conflict. Imagine instead that Crowe‘s Nikolai is pulling the strings in the background, using Foreigner as a test of his son’s might before using the elixir Vladimir used in the comics and taking the stage himself for a grand final duel. Maybe Foreigner is even reimagined as another child of Nikolai, alongside Sergei and Dmitri, dramatically revealed to the audience just before the Grim Hunter coldly kills him for failing to outdo Sergei.

Obviously, absolutely none of this is confirmed and is almost entirely fun conjecture. It’s a theory that’s been stewing in my brain for a while that I thought would be fun to get out there. It’s very possible none of this comes to fruition, but it would be very entertaining if even an ounce of it turns out to be true. In the spirit of this article, I’ll leave off on one more little theory nugget, throwing out what seems like an entirely plausible post-credits scene based on what we’ve seen Sony do in the past. Chameleon is already confirmed for the movie, and in the comics, is the one who tells Sergei about Spider-Man’s existence in the first place. It feels like this would be something Sony might want to capitalize on. Probably.

  • New ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Set Photos Offer First Close-Up of Aaron Taylor-Johnson

New ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Set Photos Offer First Close-Up of Aaron Taylor-Johnson

It was back in March when we got our first look at the production of Sony’s Kraven the Hunter film. Their next attempt at a Spider-Man universe is well underway in production and sees former Quicksilver Aaron Taylor-Johnson taking on the role of the titular hunter. We only saw an action sequence of him holding unto a car. Now, JustJared has shared a few new photos that offer a better close-up of the actor in the iconic Marvel villain role.

As we can’t share photos from JustJared, you can check them out by clicking here.

What stands out is that he has the classic beard of the hunter, as well as hair that is similar to the comics. The image of him in a suit showcases that he has a necklace with a claw of some kind attached, which is probably a way to pay tribute to his necklace in the comics that usually consists of multiple claws. His other outfit seems a bit more militarized with the necklace and a strange brown bracelet on one of his wrists. It’s unclear what the event is that he is attending.

We don’t know if we’ll get to see Kraven wear his iconic fur coat made from a lion he hunted. There’s a lot we don’t know about this project, especially how they might explore his potential connection to the setup from Morbius‘ post-credit sequence. The fact they are building a team to take down Spider-man without ever interacting with the character does add some confusion to what the endgame of this universe may end up being, especially as we don’t know which Spider-Man exists in this timeline.

  • Levi Miller Joins Cast of Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’

Levi Miller Joins Cast of Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’

Production on Kraven the Hunter, Sony’s follow-up to the disappointing performance of Morbius, has been underway for some time now in the U.K., but the cast is still rounding into shape. According to a trade report, the latest addition is Levi Miller, a 19-year old Australian actor best known for playing Peter Pan in WB’s 2015 Pan.

Directed by J.C. Chandor, the film will star Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff, one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes. The film is not expected to feature Spider-Man. Instead, it will feature Kravinoff’s half-brother, Dmitri Smerdyakov, aka the Chameleon (another one of Spidey’s great foes), played by Fred Hechinger, and their father, played by Russell Crowe.

Kraven the Hunter will join Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and the aforementioned Morbius in Sony’s growing universe of films created around some of Spider-Man’s greatest foes, but without Spider-Man. The film is set to release in January of 2023.

  • First ‘Kraven The Hunter’ Set Footage Teases Car Chase

First ‘Kraven The Hunter’ Set Footage Teases Car Chase

Sony continues to expand their universe of Marvel characters without Spider-Man with upcoming projects like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven The Hunter. Morbius is finally hitting theaters soon, while Madame Web is still casting, but it looks like Kraven The Hunter is officially in production as some footage from the set has made its way online.

Twitter account KravenSource has shared footage from the set in London where production is underway. From the footage, it looks like Kraven is hanging off the side of the vehicle and attempting to break into it while also barefoot.

That is not actually Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who will be playing the titular character, but a stunt double. It’s likely that the second unit has begun to film the stuff that does not directly require the cast of the film to be present.

It looks like production will be picking up again on March 26th through March 29th at the London Wall. Due to a listing in production weekly, we know that Kraven is filming under the working title of “Spiral.”

The film is presumed to follow the origin of the famous Spider-Man villain, Kraven the Hunter, a famous big game hunter and explorer who has found himself at odds with the webhead multiple times, most famously in the storyline Kraven’s Last Hunt.

Kraven The Hunter is currently set to hit theaters on January 13th, 2023 with director J.C. Chandor at the helm. The film is set to star Johnson alongside Ariana DeBose, Russel Crowe, Fred Hechinger, Christopher Abbot, and Alessandro Nivola.

  • Christopher Abbott Joins ‘Kraven the Hunter’ as its Main Villain

Christopher Abbott Joins ‘Kraven the Hunter’ as its Main Villain

Sony has been on a roll with their casting for the upcoming Kraven the Hunter spinoff film, which will star Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the titular role. It looks like they have now found its main villain in Christopher Abbott, who will play The Foreigner, one of Spider-Man’s iconic villains. Alessandro Nivola has also recently joined the project in a villainous role but seems like it’ll be mainly a supporting antagonist role from the looks of it.

We don’t know how the film will tackle Kraven’s early days and if it somehow builds up towards his eventual hunt for the Spider-Man. Abbott joined a cast consisting of Ariana DeBose, previously-mentioned Nivola, Fred Hechinger, and Russell Crowe. It’s quite the stacked cast for J.C. Chandor‘s next feature film based on a screenplay by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.

The addition of The Foreigner is quite interesting, as the character isn’t among the most well-known characters from Spider-man’s rogue gallery. He does actually have a history with Kraven in the comics, and his brother the Chameleon. Deadline seems to think this might be the set-up for the character moving forward, who might have a larger role moving forward. Abbott recently got a Golden Globe nomination for his work on Catch-22, and is a great addition to the cast.

  • ‘Kraven The Hunter’ Finds Its Villain in Alessandro Nivola

‘Kraven The Hunter’ Finds Its Villain in Alessandro Nivola

Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff film focused on Kraven the Hunter has found its villain. Alessandro Nivola, who many might know from The Many Saints of Newark, has joined the project as its main villain. Sadly, there are still no details on which character he might be playing, but he joins a stacked cast that consists of Ariana DeBose, Russell Crowe, and Fred Hechinger. Aaron Taylor Johnson will take on the mantle of the main character.

The J.C. Chandor directed film will explore the origin of one of Spider-Man’s most iconic villains but there’s no word if the webhead might join at a point as well. Most of their spinoffs, like Venom or the upcoming Morbius, have mostly relied on references but didn’t actually feature a version of the friendly neighborhood Spideys.

Venom was confirmed as part of the multiverse, which managed to separate the MCU version starring Tom Holland from the rest of the universe. Yet, Morbius‘ addition of Michael Keaton‘s Toomes has added some confusion to the mix, especially with one trailer explicitly referencing Venom. So, we’ll see if Sony has any plans in the near future.

After their success with Spider-Man: No Way Home, it wouldn’t be too surprising that they’re all in with more spinoff films heading our way. With an all-star cast, the film does offer some possibility to explore the character of Kraven in a new way. Curious enough, early rumors hinting at him becoming the main antagonist of No Way Home, but guess the new multiversal direction fast-tracked the separate film franchise.

  • West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose Joins ‘Kraven the Hunter’

West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose Joins ‘Kraven the Hunter’

Ariana DeBose stunned critics and audiences with her role as Anita in Stephen Spielberg’s West Side Story, winning the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress and earning an Oscar nomination for the same role. Now, DeBose will step into the world of comic book adaptations as she boards Sony’s Kraven the Hunter.

According to a trade report, DeBose will play voodoo priestess Calypso, a role for which Jodi Turner-Smith had previously been rumored. Calypso and Kraven shared a highly antagonistic relationship in the comics that often saw the hunter driven into fits of rage by the manipulations of Calypso, who also created potions for Kraven to augment his strength.

DeBose joins Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who landed the lead as Kraven late last year, Fred Hechinger, who recently joined the film as Kraven’s brother, the Chameleon, and Russell Crowe, who will play the father of the two men. Kraven the Hunter, directed by J.C. Chandor, is due in theaters next January.

  • ‘White Lotus’ Star Fred Hechinger Joins Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’

‘White Lotus’ Star Fred Hechinger Joins Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’

As Sony pushes ahead with its universe of Spider-Man characters, Kraven the Hunter is next in line. The film, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven, is set to begin production this month and has been filing out the rest of the cast. Today, a trade report indicates that they’ve cast another key role.

According to Deadline, actor Fred Hechinger, who rose to fame for his role in the HBO series White Lotus, has joined the cast of Kraven the Hunter as Dmitri Smerdyakov, the half-brother of Kraven and better known as the Spider-Man villian the Chameleon. Hechinger joins Taylor-Johnson and Russell Crowe, who was reportedly cast as the father of the two half-brothers, in the film.

Chameleon, whose involvement in the film was first reported last summer by the Illuminderi, shares a father with Kraven in the comics, but as the bastard son of a servant of the family, was never treated as an equal to his brother. From a young age, he trained as a spy and became a master of disguise and, eventually, joined his brother as a partner in crime. According to the Illuminerdi’s report, Chameleon will serve as one of the antagonists in Kraven the Hunter.

Kraven the Hunter, directed by J.C. Chandor, is currently set to hit theaters on January 13th, 2023.

  • ‘The Power of the Dog’s Kodi Smit-McPhee Passed on Playing ‘Kraven the Hunter’s Chameleon

‘The Power of the Dog’s Kodi Smit-McPhee Passed on Playing ‘Kraven the Hunter’s Chameleon

It looks like today’s a day all in the name of Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff, Kraven the Hunter. Not only did Russell Crowe join the production, but we also got a confirmation that the rumor of actress Jodie Turner-Smith joining the production was sadly untrue. Now, it seems that an “almost” casting was revealed, as Jeff Sneider shared the news that Kodi Smit-McPhee has seemingly passed on the role of Chameleon, who was rumored to appear in the film back in June. It seems that it was due to scheduling conflicts that he couldn’t further pursue the role.

It sadly happens quite frequently that some actors can’t tackle various roles due to projects overlapping. We’ll see if we get an announcement soon about who ended up taking the role. The character also is a fitting addition, as the initial article teased that most of the cast will consist of the titular character’s family. Well, Chameleon is actually his half-brother named Dmitri Smerdyakov. It’ll be interesting to see if he might end up as the main antagonist of the story, as both brothers end up in an ongoing conflict. We’ll see if we get more news in the near future.
