    ‘Spider-Man: King in Black’ Could Make Good on a Pair of Recent Marvel Studios’ Blunders

    With any luck, Marvel Studios’ well-documented Multiverse Saga struggles may be on the way to being a thing of the past. Not many studios could have survived the deluge of debacles that Marvel rolled out in 2022 and 2023; however, following a string of successful projects in 2024, it seems as though Kevin Feige and crew–under a mandate from Bob Iger–have found a way back to the top of the food chain. And while the return to form is a welcome one, projects such as Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion still exist and the events depicted within them cannot be entirely discounted as the MCU forges ahead.

    The studio’s mid-2023 course correction hasn’t had time to be fully realized as yet but with a somewhat improved Captain America: Brave New World and a much-improved Thunderbolts* headed to theaters in 2025, the enjoyment of the fruits of Iger‘s mandated labor is within reach. Not every project was given the same grace as those two, however, and as the second half of the Multiverse Saga gets rewritten on the fly, it’s clear that some of the studio’s original plans will never come to fruition. Eternals 2? Nope. Thor 5 starring Hercules/ Maybe. The Kang Dynasty? Ope. Armor Wars? We’ll see. However, even though direct sequels and the big ideas set up to unfold within them may never see the big screen, recent rumors about the future of the MCU may provide a gateway to make good on a pair of projects that probably should have turned out quite a bit better than they did.

    Whatever the plans for Phase 6 were in 2022, they have become something quite different in 2024  No one change can tell the whole story of what went down behind the scenes but the shift in the studio’s plans for director Destin Daniel Cretton are very telling. Once on track to helm two of the studio’s most important Phase 6 films (a Shang-Chi sequel and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) is now helming Spider-Man 4. 1+1 means Spidey 4 is now pretty damn important to whatever plans Marvel Studios has for to start bringing the Multiverse Saga to a close.

    Recent reports indicated that the fourth installment in the Tom Holland-led franchise underwent an overhaul that saw it evolve from a street-level team up to a multiverse story and recent rumblings have begun to reveal the nature of the new script written by Spidey vets Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Should the latest rumors prove true, Marvel Studios and Sony will expand their collaboration beyond their already impressive efforts and will oversee a creative crossover event of unprecedented magnitude. An increasingly louder and louder buzz points towards Marvel incorporating Sony’s most marketable Spidey-adjacent star, Tom Hardy, into the MCU following Venom: The Last Dance. Furthermore, as Hardy’s Eddie/Venom joins the narrative, so will the film’s villain, Knull, the creator of the symbiote race and one of Marvel Comics’ most powerful and frightening new villains. And incredibly enough, Knull has connections that extend well-beyond the Spider’s web that could easily be weaved into the character’s MCU arc and, in doing so, make good on a pair of moments that currently sit near the top of the studio’s list of recent missteps.

    As fans prematurely bemoan Spider-Man 4 potentially telling “another multiverse story” (like the last one was sooooooo bad),   the true nature of Knull and the storytelling potential it offers is being overlooked. Sure Spider-Man: King in Black would feature two characters who originated in a universe other than Earth-616’s but recent retcons to the history of the Klyntar have blazed a trail that, quite honestly, Marvel Studios’ Parliament would be foolish not to explore on the MCU.

    The Retcon is On…Hopefully

    Retcons have allowed comic book writers the ability to make changes great and small to previously established canon in order to make room for (sometimes) exciting new stories. So far, this is territory into which the MCU hasn’t waded very far but should they choose to work with Sony to bring the terrifying King in Black into their sandbox, they have a great opportunity to easily retcon some small pieces of previous films which might, in the end, make them feel a little more important.

    Thor: Love and Thunder had plenty of problems and though the film’s cold open wasn’t one of them, the type of increased creative collaboration with Sony that would allow Marvel Studios to include Knull in Spider-Man 4 could work in favor of at least making the fourth Thor film feel a bit more important than it did. Though it wasn’t seen on screen, the battle between Gorr’s god, Rapu, and the Dark Shadow Lord that left the former dead played out on the pages of 2013’s Thor: God of Thunder #6. However, in Jason Aaron’s iconic run, the character who fought the gold-armored god (and was stabbed in the melon by a spear!) was Knull. And just as in the film, and as one might expect from being stabbed in the head, Knull appeared to be dead and his Necrosword was scooped up by Gorr, who then used it to butcher gods across the cosmos.

    It took Knull more than one hundred years to recover from his wounds. After his recovery, the primordial god began to use his powers to create the symbiotic parasites that eventually became the Klyntar race of which Venom is a member. It’s not entirely clear how long Gorr was actively killing gods in the MCU but the point of retcons is that it doesn’t really matter. Thor: Love and Thunder‘s Dark Shadow Lord could easily be retconned as Knull and the Shadow Realm and Shadow Monsters Gorr had access to in the movie could easily be tied to Knull’s title as the King in Black and the god of darkness. Truthfully, it would be incredibly foolish of Marvel Studios not to take advantage of the opportunity to make these changes should Knull be part of the plans for the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.

    Making the Best of a Bad Situation

    For far too long now, it’s been very clear that not only do Marvel Studios’ mid and post-credit stingers distract audiences from the very films they pay to watch but also hold no promise of an eventual payoff. In simple terms, the studio has played fast and loose with what they stick on after the body of the film, making the stingers either irrelevant of a problem for the “next guy up” to solve. There are no stronger examples of this than both of the stingers attached to Eternals but Spider-Man: King in Black could very well help save one of them.

    Thanks to one of the film’s stingers, Kit Harrington‘s Dane Whitman seemed to be destined to do…something…after Eternals. Whitman’s destiny as the Black Knight was teased before being interrupted by the offscreen voice of Samuel L. Jackson‘s Nick Fury Mahershala Ali‘s Blade. Two years later, Blade still hasn’t even begun production and Harrington‘s MCU future remains dishearteningly undefined. However, Whitman’s Ebony Blade could be the key to unlocking the potential of one of those two characters and possibly even both.

    Marvel Studios has made it clear they’re not interested in pulling directly from the pages of Marvel Comics and in this case, that could work in their favor. Whitman’s Ebony Blade has an interesting history that itself was retconned during the King in Black limited comic book series. Its MCU history is completely unknown which means the creatives have been handed a blank slate and could smartly craft something that could allow Harrington to bolster the supporting cast of Spider-Man 4 while making the Ebony Blade an important MacGuffin in the battle against Knull.

    While there once was some chance that Harrington might lead a Black Knight solo project that could serve to tell the long history of the Ebony Blade and the cursed knights who wielded it over the years, that’s incredibly unlikely to happen now given Disney’s new marching orders for their major studios. However, tossing Whitman into the mix of Spider-Man: King in Black would allow for a far more condensed version of the story to be told, as happened in the King in Black event series. And while a one-to-one adaptation of that won’t happen, that’s in the best interest of the potential story. For a long time now, Marvel Studios’ plots have always been simpler than those speculated or made up by fans and it could happen again with Whitman’s Ebony Blade. In the comics, the blade was forged from a substance known as Starstone which was created during the Big Bang. A powerful relic from the beginning of time, the Ebony Blade was sought after by Knull during his attempted conquest of Earth. It’s easy enough to imagine Knull, an Eldritch god who himself came to be during the birth of the cosmos, seeking out such a relic as he comes to Earth-616 in Spider-Man 4, giving Whitman a reason to have existed in the MCU in the first place and allowing for the Eternals‘ stinger to have some serious significance rather than being yet another throwaway scene. Ali’s Blade could provide some exposition while also helping fight off Knull’s horde of invaders and most everyone would start feeling quite a bit better about most everything.

    Of course, everything you just read is dependent, first and foremost, on the rumors of Knull joining the MCU being accurate. Beyond that, it’s not hard to start to see pathways that would allow for “yet another multiverse” movie to be one of the more exciting films in what remains in the Multiverse Saga while also upping the profile of some of the MCU’s less-than-beloved projects from its first half.

    Christian Bale Reflects on First Time Working on ‘Thor 4’s Green Screens, Calls it “Monotony”

    While the title of this article may be the perfect fuel for those calling out Marvel Studios’ use of the green screen, Christian Bale shared his experience on what it’s like working on the set of Thor: Love and Thunder. He famously took on the role of Gorr the God Butcher in the film, and it seems like he had a hard time differentiating between sets early on, especially with this being his first attempt at working with a more green-screen-heavy production.

    That’s the first time I’ve done that. I mean, the definition of it is monotony. You’ve got good people. You’ve got other actors who are far more experienced at it than me. Can you differentiate one day from the next? No. Absolutely not. You have no idea what to do. I couldn’t even differentiate one stage from the next. They kept saying, ‘You’re on Stage Three.’ Well, it’s like, ‘Which one is that?’ ‘The blue one.’ They’re like, ‘Yeah. But you’re on Stage Seven.’ ‘Which one is that?’ ‘The blue one.’ I was like, ‘Uh, where?’”

    He also highlights how he struggled to stick to his usual method acting due to the makeup process with his character. It certainly highlights that Bale attempted something new with this production; though he highlighted he had fun with it as well.

    He highlights in his statement that other actors have more experience with it and it certainly shows that it was quite an adjustment for Bale. We’ll see if this has made him uncertain about returning to that type of film in the future, or if he might still have enough fun to return one day. Perhaps Gorr has a future in the MCU’s multiverse.

    No, you read that correctly but a new piece of Thor: Love and Thunder concept art reveals that at some point in development, Groot may have been in flames. As shared by our own Charles Murphy attending the event, it seems like they were showcasing some artwork from the Thor sequel during his time with the Guardians. It features the Asgardian with his beard and likely took place earlier in the flashback of his time with the Guardians but it’s certainly something seeing Groot in flames like that.

    It’s always fun to get a look behind the scenes at what may have been, especially in a film that was as unhinged as Love and Thunder. In many ways, they definitely could’ve gone in any direction with the iconic Guardians of the Galaxy. Of course, having one of its most popular members just catch fire and not give it more focus might’ve been a waste especially with Groot being made of wood, Rocket wouldn’t just stand by as his son burns to a crisp.

    First Look at ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Steelbook; Four Deleted Scenes Revealed

    Thor: Love and Thunder‘s Disney+ release has been recently confirmed for September to celebrate Disney+ Day. For those that like to collect these projects physically, the wait for that release is luckily not too long after. The digital release is set for September 9th with the physical one planned for September 27th. It’ll be made available with on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.

    ScreenRant has also shared a first look at the movie’s cover art for the Steelbook available at Best Buy. It’ll feature the poster designs featuring Jane Foster and Thor in their iconic pose from the comics. The interior even includes the yelling goats pulling the chariot in a clever design replicating the boat we see in the Marvel Studios film.

    The Blu-ray will include a gag reel and audio commentary from Taika Waititi. There are also three featurettes included by the titles of Hammer-Worthy: Thor and The Mighty Thor, Shaping a Villain, and Another Classic Taika Adventure. There are also four deleted scenes included, such as the team looking for Zeus, two scenes spending more time with Star-Lord and Mantis, as well as a potential alternative sequence of Zeus passing on his weapon to Thor.

    It’ll be interesting to see if we get a different side of Zeus in these deleted scenes, but it’s curious they left out some of the confirmed scenes of Gorr’s bloody path of killing all gods. It seems like they aren’t including them so it’s not an option for people considering it as canon given the gruesome fate of some Thor veteran characters.

    ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Disney Premiere on Disney+ Day

    While many are pulling back from the 45-day release window, Disney is seemingly still sticking to a shorter theatrical run before it hits Disney+. Of course, the upcoming Disney+ Day also adds fuel to the fire as they aim to celebrate and it seems Thor: Love and Thunder will be part of the celebration.

    In a new ad for Disney+ Day, we got the confirmation that the latest Marvel film will indeed premiere on the app on September 8th. It’ll join other exclusive releases such as a live-action remake of Pinocchio.

    It’s great to see them make the day stand our with these additions and it’s the second time a Marvel film gets added. Last year, they did the same thing with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings being the major addition to celebrate Disney+ Day.

    That wasn’t all as we even got the IMAX versions of existing films before they announced various new projects heading to the service. We’ll see what surprises they might have in store as we inch closer to the event.

    ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Concept Art Teases ‘X-Men’ and ‘Chaos War’ Characters

    Thor: Love and Thunder has come and gone, but it hasn’t left the mainstream conversation. The fourthquel was responsible for introducing audiences to many exciting new locations, many of which will be discussed for years to come. Perhaps the most visually pleasing was Omnipotence City, a glorious meeting place for gods of all pantheons and the site of the film’s most colorful sequences. The locale was also popular with fans for it’s many intriguing cameos and godly designs. Marvel Studios artist Sung Choi recently took to Instagram to reveal some design work he completed for the film as part of the “early exploration” process for Omnipotence City, and it features quite a few faces that could fill the same category of shock and awe.

    Among those present appears to be Cyttorak, the deity that famously powers X-Men villain Juggernaut through an ancient artifact known as the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. Seated next to him is what looks like a version of Galactus, the infamous world-eater who plagues the Marvel Universe on a regular basis, and Ganesha, the real-world Hindu god of intellect and wisdom. Also present are what could be Aegis, the golden Lady of All Sorrows, of Marvel’s Proemial gods, and what looks like a Mandalorian from the Star Wars franchise. The latter could be a fun reference to director Taika Waititi‘s time on the hit Disney+ series.

    Curiously, the largest god seated all the way at the top of the throne room is incredibly similar in design to the comic book version of Ajak – leader of the Eternals. It’s possible Ajak was at one point considered as a cameo to tie-in with Marvel’s Eternals film, and this art was produced before Salma Hayek landed the role. Finally, on the right, fans will be able to spot two major characters from Thor lore who actually did end up making the movie’s final cut. Hercules, played in the post-credits scene by Brett Goldstein, is drawn sitting beside a god who looks like Amatsu-Mikaboshi, the malevolent Japanese Chaos King who acted as a the villain of Greg Pak‘s Chaos War arc, a story in which Hercules and Thor team-up to defeat them. It’s important to remember this art was likely devised before anything was set in stone for the project, and Choi likely threw in random gods to get a better feel for how the throne room should look. Either way, it’s still fun to speculate.

    ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Passes $700M Worldwide

    While it didn’t have the momentum early on, Thor: Love and Thunder has officially passed the $700M mark worldwide. It’s currently on its way to passing the box office of its predecessor if you exclude its Chinese and Russian box office. The original pulled in $850M when it was released back in 2017 but owed $112M alone to China with Russia making up 23M. So, it would “only” need to pass $715M to pull in a higher box office than its predecessor. Not too far away from its current $704M international cume.

    Naturally, many would assume that the influx should be higher, especially with the presumed $250M budget this film is standing on. Still, with a B+ CinemaScore and a more mixed critical reception, it still surprised many when it started picking up momentum. The second and third weekends seemingly had a stronger drop but it was during the week when things would pick up for the fourth Thor entry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    The film won’t be making a massive profit for Marvel Studios as it likely will break even but a fourth entry making as much or even more than its predecessor is also not a common thing in the market. Thor: Love and Thunder proves that Marvel Studios still has a good hold on the market and $700M is a great win for any production nowadays; Top Gun: Maverick is the exception that may be overlooked in the more fragile market we have right now.

    As of now, the film is likely to pass the first’s overall box office run and even reach around $750M+. There’s still a chance it could go higher if it legs out even with its 45-day window on the horizon; something that may be facing a change sooner rather than later. Still, the film is not a flop as many would make you believe and it’ll b interesting to see how Black Panther: Wakanda Forever performs later this year.

    ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Director Hints at Marvel Studios’ Plans for Hercules

    The post-credit stinger for Thor: Love and Thunder felt like a return to form for the Marvel Studios franchise, as it finally introduced a new character that would have a big role moving forward. In it, we saw that Russell Crowe‘s Zeus survived having his own lightning bolt shot through his chest and sending his son out to kill Thor for what he’s done. As it turns out, the son he’s talking to (he’s had quite a few in Greek myth) is non-other than Hercules, played by Brett Goldstein.

    While many believed it may be a hint at the next entry for the Thor franchise, it does seem like they may have other plans for the Greek demigod, as hinted by Love and Thunder‘s director Taika Watiti. he highlighted that his inclusion was an idea from Marvel Studios directly and that he’ll likely “won’t be invited to come and be a part of.”

    And then [Louis D’Esposito?] is like, we’re gonna introduce Hercules, and um, that made no sense to me, I didn’t even know that was a character in Marvel, but um, apparently it is, and um… It was good, I know it’s opening up a whole new thing, uh, which I won’t be invited to come and be a part of, but I’m happy for everyone who loves Greek Gods.

    That last line certainly sounds like a jab at many that have been openly displeased with his adaptation of the popular Norse God of Marvel myth. The more comedic direction has rubbed quite a few the wrong way and it seems to still stand out among the already comedy-heavy Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    His future with the franchise is uncertain and it’ll be interesting if they would make a follow-up, especially with how the latest film ended. No matter what direction they might go, it still looks like the future is full of opportunities and new characters for Marvel Studios.

    New ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ BTS Images Offer Closer Look at Bastet

    We were all quite excited for the arrival of Thor: Love and Thunder, as it would expand our understanding of godhood in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While our visit to Omnipotence City was relatively brief, it did feature a host of interesting characters scattered throughout a sequence.

    Now, the most significant addition was that we could briefly see what looks to be Bastet in the foreground. While she sadly didn’t receive any lines, a new batch of behind-the-scenes photos shared by Luca Vannella offers the best look yet at her design from the film, which highlights her Egyptian background.

    It’s still bizarre they’d include such a monumental character of Balck Panther’s mythology and not even explore it in the story. We got a few short moments, and there’s some great inclusion of New Zealand deities, but we sadly didn’t quite get to explore the other pantheons throughout, even if Moon Knight already had us covered there.

    Perhaps they are setting up some more exploration of godhood that will be forced to get involved once a certain Conqueror potentially gets his way. We’re still in the set-up phase and there is a lot to be excited about. So, we’ll see where it’s all heading with SDCC heading our way starting today.

    ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Writer Surprised By Post-Credits Cameo 

    Thor: Love and Thunder was full of surprises, but it’s biggest was perhaps one that came after the credits started rolling. A brief mid-credits scene introduced fans to Hercules, played by Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein, in a reveal that will likely serve to continue the adventures of Thor and his cohorts. The cameo caught global audiences off guard, and apparently, it was just as much of a shock to the film’s writer as it was to everyone else.

    Screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who partnered with director Taika Waititi to craft Love and Thunder’s story, told Variety that she was mostly unaware of Hercules’ inclusion before seeing it at the premiere. However, the creative didn’t seem to mind being left out of that decision:

    I saw that at the premiere with everybody else. In the same way that I guess Taika didn’t know Thor was coming back, I did not know that Roy Kent was Hercules. I’m a huge Marvel fan, so I was delighted to have one moment in the movie where I was truly surprised.

    When pressed over how she could have gotten all the way to the film’s release without knowing about the cameo, Robinson admitted she did have some idea the appearance could be happening. It would seem not all conversations at Marvel Studios are as secretive as people think:

    I knew there was talk about Hercules. The name Hercules was not not said in conversations that I definitely, probably wasn’t supposed to overhear, but did. So the minute I saw the beginning of the scene, I knew he was gonna be talking to Hercules. I didn’t know who they cast. But I was like, is this gonna be Hercules? I just knew that it was a thing that they were like, “We’re gonna want leeway with this, so stay away from it.”

    The last bit of Robinson’s quote is especially interesting, as it could suggest Marvel’s plans for the future of Goldstein’s character are still being figured out. Also, the fact that the film’s writer was kept in the dark about the script’s addition speaks volumes about the lengths Marvel will go to maintain a big reveal.
