  • ‘Eternals’ Sequels Not a Guarantee for Marvel Studios

‘Eternals’ Sequels Not a Guarantee for Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios has built up a collection of trilogies with their iconic heroes. Some ended their runs long before the Infinity Saga ended while others are only just continuing. Thor: Love and Thunder is their first attempt at going beyond the classic trilogy concept. So, with new entries on the horizon, it seemed like a logical next step is to build new franchises.

Recent rumors already hinted at a Shang-Chi sequel, but there’s also the upcoming Eternals film. With a cast of ten main characters that spans 7,000 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe history, it seems like it’s made for a sequel. Yet. producer Nate Moore hints that there’s no guarantee we’ll get any sequels.

It’s not something that is a must-have. Obviously, we have ideas of where we could go, but there isn’t a hard and fast rule where we have to have three of these things and this is the first.

    Nate Moore

While some may make a connection with the recent discussions surrounding its Rotten Tomatoes score, it’s most likely a question of if the Eternals as such are going to have their own franchise or live on through others. Plus, it’s great for Marvel Studios to also give some films their unique voice and let them stand on their own. Not every new entry requires a trilogy or full franchise. Especially a project with 10+ protagonists that could expand into their own storylines separate from the group. It may become like an Avengers project in reverse, where we then continue our stories with the various members.

  • First Trailer Drops for Fan-Made ‘Spider-Man: Lotus’ Film

First Trailer Drops for Fan-Made ‘Spider-Man: Lotus’ Film

There are many passionate fans out there that have their vision of adapting popular characters or franchises. Some developed their games based on popular franchises, such as the Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R) or Pokemon: Uranium. Of course, Marvel and DC comics have also seen countless fans tackle their favorite heroes even if they don’t have the same budget as big-name studios. Still, that should never deter a fan from giving a project a shot to bring his own vision to life.

Among these projects is Gavin J. Konop‘s adaptation titled Spider-Man: Lotus. The passionate fan decided to tackle the story of Spidey still struggling after the death of Gwen Stacy and he starts helping a young kid facing a terminal illness. Inspired by the storyline of The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man, he got a team together to bring this passion project to life. After a long wait, he has now dropped the official trailer.

It’s not officially licensed by Marvel, but it’s meant as a non-profit project all due to the love for the character. The first trailer certainly seems to capture the spirit of everyone’s favorite wall-crawler. It also looks great considering it was most likely made with a shoestring budget. It must be a proud moment for Konop to finally put it out there and it looks quite promising. Here’s looking forward to its Summer 2022 release and a fan bringing a passion project like this to life.

  • New Image of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus Teases He’ll Get an Upgrade in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

New Image of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus Teases He’ll Get an Upgrade in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Spider-Man: No Way Home will end the current trilogy of Tom Holland‘s run as the character. The first trailer teased the grand return of Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus, which he openly confirmed some time ago. When we get our first look at the actor, it confirmed that he’ll be closer to what he was in Spider-Man 2 back in 2004. Yet, a new image has found its way online that features a curious difference. His tentacles seem to have red and gold included in their design unlike what we saw in previous images.

    Image

Of course, the color caught many fans’ attention, such as @Mar_Tessaract believing it might be a nod to Tony Stark’s iconic Iron Man color palette. Doc Ock was a mentor figure in the original film, which this may be a nod towards but what stands out is that when you look at previous images from Empire’s coverage on the film, there’s a distinct lack of these color additions.

If you zoom in, you might notice some golden parts in the tentacles’ design but no sign of the red highlighted in the new image. Even the arms seem slicker in the new image if you take a closer look. Not just that, but it seems his tentacles have a very different structure. It is closer to the design from the 2004 film. So, the image from Empire above is probably from their first confrontation and he’ll upgrade it at some point. Perhaps he ends up finding some Stark Technology equipment and gives his arms an overhaul. Learning of Peter’s connection to the hero, he might add the color to toy with his multiversal foe.

  • Sony Releasing New 4K Box Sets of Original ‘Spider-Man’ Films in Time for ‘No Way Home’

Sony Releasing New 4K Box Sets of Original ‘Spider-Man’ Films in Time for ‘No Way Home’

In the entertainment industry, timing is everything. Especially comic book movies involve a lot more with merchandising and utilizing the synergy to nab an extra buck. So, when a project has a lot of mysteries surrounding it, all eyes are on various merchandising or tie-ins to figure out what is heading our way. Sony especially has been analyzed on their every action ever since rumors started circling that Spider-Man: No Way Home will include more than just a single Spider-Man. So, the latest announcement is certain to add more to the discussion.

Sony has decided to re-release all films featuring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as 4K Ultra HD deluxe box sets. The original Spider-Man trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man 2-film edition will release on November 8th just in time to give everyone a chance to catch up on their films. Of course, the confirmed inclusion of villains from both films adds a nice synergy to bank on, as people might want to catch up with Alfred Molina‘s Doctor Octopus who has been heavily featured in its trailers and official images.

Of course, besides the villains, there’s still the rumor that Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield might have a role in the film. So, their release will likely add to the speculation surrounding No Way Home, which will not only end Tom Holland‘s trilogy but pay tribute to the films that came before. We’re still anxiously awaiting the next trailer, which might offer a clearer picture what other references we can expect in the threequel entry of the MCU.

  • REPORT: ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel Headed to Production in 2023

REPORT: ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel Headed to Production in 2023

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the breakaway cinematic hit of 2021 that is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is getting a sequel but it’s happening. In a report about a Thunderbolts project headed to the MCU by GWW, the site is also reporting that the Shang-Chi sequel is set to begin production in 2023.

Marvel Studios is keen on expanding the world of Shang-Chi, especially with the rumored Ten Rings spin-off in the works. I personally haven’t seen it yet due to closed theaters but I’ve heard the first film certainly leaves open some very interesting doors for a sequel so the possibilities seem endless.

  • REPORT: ‘THUNDERBOLTS’ Project Is Going Ahead at Marvel Studios

REPORT: ‘THUNDERBOLTS’ Project Is Going Ahead at Marvel Studios

It’s been rumored for a long time, and now it appears it could be true. A new report from The GWW indicates that Marvel Studios is moving forward with a film centered around the Thunderbolts. The team has had a few iterations in the comics, starting as a group of villains disguised as heroes and transitioning into a group of reformed supervillains working for the United States government. It would appear the project is taking a similar route to the latter, with teases having been placed in prior projects such as Black Widow and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It’s likely this is the team to which Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine has recruited the likes of Wyatt Russell‘s U.S. Agent and Florence Pugh‘s Yelena Belova. It’s likely that the teases will continue, with Belova herself set to appear in this winter’s Hawkeye series on Disney Plus.

Also of note, the same report from The GWW claims that 2023 will mark the beginning of multiple potential new MCU projects. Titles the site includes in its list are Nova, the Okoye series, and Marvel Studios’ much-anticipated Fantastic Four reboot. The GWW concludes by revealing they have information on yet another secret project they hope to reveal sooner than later. If true, it would mean that the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is only just beginning. A new wave of heroes and super-teams is on the horizon.

  • Bill Murray Confirms Involvement with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Sequel

Bill Murray Confirms Involvement with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Sequel

Earlier this month, a listing hinted at the appearance of Bill Murray in the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp sequel subtitled Quantumania. The actor is currently set to return in the Ghostbusters: Afterlife film and his addition in a Marvel film would make for quite the pop culture revival for the long-time Hollywood mainstay. Of course, at the time, there was no official word on his involvement and the listing was also swiftly taken down once it was noticed. Yet, it seems that the actor has outright confirmed his role in an interview with the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Translating his statement from the interview shared by writer Patrick Heidmann, he shared the following:

You know, recently I filmed a Marvel movie. I probably am not allowed to tell you this but who cares. Many people there were surprised that I would decide to join such a project. But, to me it was quite simple: I met the director and I really liked him. He was funny, modest, everything you wish from a director. And with the cheerleader story “Bring It On – Girls United,” he made a film that I really enjoyed. So, I said yes even if these giant comic adaptations don’t interest me as an actor otherwise.

    Bill Murray

The writer shared the confirmation on his Twitter as well:

The moment he mentioned the 2000 cheerleader film Bring It On, it was clearly a reference to director Peyton Reed. As such, he confirmed his involvement with the project outside of an official announcement in the interview. He now also joins Alfred Molina and Russel Crow in the club of veteran actor snot caring about their NDAs.

  • ‘Eternals’ Chloé Zhao Debunks Rumors that Marvel Studios Takes Full Control of Action Sequences

‘Eternals’ Chloé Zhao Debunks Rumors that Marvel Studios Takes Full Control of Action Sequences

Many rumors are surrounding Marvel Studios’ approach to filmmaking. Some have believed that they heavily restrict the way their directors work to ensure unity between their various projects. Some comments by director Lucrecia Martel, who was in the running for Black Widow at one point, didn’t help matters. If you throw in the highly debated use of previsualization, it seemed like some aspects of the director’s visions may be hindered. Yet, Eternals director Choé Zhao made one thing clear in an interview with Indie Wire: the action sequences in her upcoming Marvel Studios project are done by her.

I would probably say that the myth is not quite true and I think I’m not the only filmmaker who would say that. My God, for a year and a half, three times a week for a couple hours a day, I was sitting in front of a big screen making decisions for every detail of how visual effects could look in the real world.

    Chloé Zhao

She highlighted that all the action sequences in the film are done by her and she had a hand in bringing them to life. The indie director is well-known for her more grounded work and use of nature. So, the bombastic Marvel Cinematic Universe was quite the change of pace for Zhao. Still, she highlighted how a lot of her work was cooperation and creative freedom with the studio.

From day one, Marvel said, ‘Here are the tools we use. We need your version. We don’t want three different movies we want your movie. They would be there to help me because I’ve never used these tools.

    Chloé Zhao

James Gunn famously also highlighted the creative freedom he received from the studio. He was even set to create the path for the studio’s cosmic direction until the controversy happened. Zhao‘s exploration of the MCU’s history and cosmic origins might continue the path he set and was given the creative freedom to determine how she approached it. Even given the many discussions surrounding its current RottenTomatoes rating of 72%, it highlights that the vision we’re about to watch is what she’s been working on for so long.

  • More Additional Photogrpahy Planned for ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel

More Additional Photogrpahy Planned for ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was the first of many dominoes in Marvel Studios recent shift of of their upcoming release slate, moving off of its March 25th, 2022 date to May 6th, 2022. Marvel Entertainment CCO Kevin Feige attributed the shifting slate to production shifts and changes and now we might have a little clearer idea of what he meant thanks to Benedict Cumberbatch.

In an interview with the Today Show, Cumberbatch indicated that the sequel, which began filming last November, is scheduled to undergo additional photography over the next two months.

Additional photography is something that Marvel Studios has scheduled into its productions, but in an interview earlier this year, Cumberbatch indicated the planned reshoots were supposed to wrap in September. Whether those reshoots were delayed or these reshoots are in addition to those is unclear; however, in any case, it certainly seems it’s best practice to have the creative team complete the film they want to put in theaters rather than having a new “Release the (insert director here) cut)” movement on social media every 6 months. The Strange sequel has been entirely reinvented since Scott Derrickson left and Michael Waldron and Sam Raimi took over, so letting those two continue to shape the film until they feel its ready to go is in everyone’s best interest.

  • First Look at a New, Out-of-this-World Logo for ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’

First Look at a New, Out-of-this-World Logo for ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’

Production on Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania has been ongoing for several months now and very little has been revealed from the set…until now. Last night, we got our first look at an all-new, all-different logo for the film. As you can see below, the new logo includes some very stylized, alien-like text for the subtitle.

We know that a Variant of Jonathan Majors He Who Remains will be in the film, so the text could be a reference to his 31st century origins; on the other hand, we also have plenty of reason to believe a portion of the film will take place in the Quantum Realm, a dimension that’s to date only been explored by Janet van Dyne, so it’s possible that the text could be a reference to some of its residents. Of course, it’s also entirely possible that it was just a pretty cool looking logo. Regardless, we might have to wait quite some time before we find out as Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania isn’t set to hit theaters until July 28, 2023.
