‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Empire Cover Teases the Film’s Villains

The wait for this next installment in the Spider-Man franchise from Marvel Studios has felt like an eternity. With so much news and so many rumors about what’s going on, we just can’t wait to get our next good look at the film. On top of it all, the promotion on the film has been quite scarce, as we’ve only gotten one trailer. The film is slowly inching closer to its release date and Sony remains quiet.

Luckily, a new look at the film from Empire Magazine has given us a look at a new suit. Not just that, we are even given a tease at who Spidey will be up against this time. The first trailer for the film teased the return of Doc Ock and Green Goblin but the subscriber cover for December’s issue seems to confirm a few more rumored foes. Alongside the pumpkin bombs and Doc Ock’s mechanical arms, you can clearly see a fist made of sand, a green and yellow lightning bolt, as well as a mysterious yet familiar dome.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently set to hit theaters exclusively on December 17th, 2021. The film will feature the return of Tom Hollands Peter Parker, alongside Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, and Marisa Tomei. While there still seems to be a lot secrets surrounding this film, it could be one of, if not, Marvel studios most ambitious films to date and the start of the MCU’s next big saga.

  • New ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Empire Cover Offers a Closer Look at a New Suit

New ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Empire Cover Offers a Closer Look at a New Suit

Over time, it’s incredible how many rumored characters and storylines are potentially included in Spider-Man: No Way Home. As such, there’s been a lot of uncertainty on what we can truly expect from the film. The only real confirmations we got were the various suits he’ll wear in the upcoming film. It wasn’t until the trailer dropped that we at least got the tease of Green Goblin and Alfred Molina‘s return as Doc Ock. The promotion has been silent ever since. At least, that was until now.

Empire has unveiled a new cover featuring the wallcrawler alongside Ock’s mechanical tentacles and the pumpkin bombs from Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man film. In it, we also get a good look at one of Spidey’s new costumes that got teased through the merchandise release. It’s not the Black-Gold suit or even the returning Iron Spider costume, but the one that seems like a natural combination of the latter with his base suit from Far From Home.

It’s quite the stylish design and the way they added What If…?’s reflection effect to bring the multiverse to life is a nice touch. We also get a small nod to the magical webbing that was teased with the reveal of the black-gold suit is a nice addition. Of course, the Empire magazine is also the tease of more coverage in the near future as well as a potential second trailer. It’s still crazy we’re waiting for a poster.

  • Penny Dreadful Alum Sir Simon Russell Beale Joins ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Penny Dreadful Alum Sir Simon Russell Beale Joins ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

According to a playbill for his new gig, The Lehman Triology, British stage actor and Penny Dreadful alum Sir Simon Russell Beale has joined the MCU and will be making an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder.

    https://imgur.com/gallery/2uMrQOM

Beale has portrayed Shakespearian icons such as Malvolio, Hamlet, Iago and King Lear during his nearly 30 year career that has stretched from stage to big screen. He also memorably portrayed Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle over 3 seasons of Penny Dreadful.

It’s not known what role Beale has taken on in Thor: Love and Thunder, but given his pedigree and the rumors that gods and goddesses from other pantheons may appear, it’s not too far fetched to think he might be portraying one of them.

Thor: Love and Thunder will be in theaters on July 8th, 2022.

  • Zooey Deschanel Almost Played the Wasp in 2012’s ‘Avengers’

Zooey Deschanel Almost Played the Wasp in 2012’s ‘Avengers’

It’s always fun to take a look back at what could’ve been. Many films go through a variety of scripts before they settle on the one that makes it into cinemas. It looks like Avengers almost was a completely different story, as the new book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe confirmed that Joss Whedon‘s Avengers film was originally going to center on the Wasp. Not just that, they were eyeing New Girl‘s Zooey Deschanel for the role, as highlighted by producer Jeremy Latcham.

It was all about The Wasp. He wanted to cast Zooey Deschanel. [Wasp] was the funniest character in the whole movie, and well-written.

    Jeremy Latcham

They go into detail about how the production ended up including Wasp in a major role. It seems after Iron Man 2, no one knew if Scarlett Johansson would return and so they needed to fill the role that was originally meant for Black Widow. Whedon decided to add in Wasp. A quote by Whedon highlights that once Johansson was back on board, they had to rewrite the entire script, especially as they realized the Wasp character took over the story.

The Wasp happened because there was a short period where it looked like we weren’t going to be able to get Scarlett [due to scheduling conflicts], so I was panicking. I thought, ‘Hold on, we could do The Wasp.’ Then I fell in love with that. But we did get Scarlett, and then I realized I had written this entire movie about The Wasp. Oops. I overcompensated there.

    Joss Whedon

It’s certainly a little peek behind the curtains and exploring what could’ve been. Deschanel would match a more bubbly version of Janet van Dyne, which some may be familiar with from the animated Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes series. Of course, the character took quite a different route as Evangeline Lilly‘s Hope van Dyne would take on the iconic mantle. They turned the title into a legacy story, as she took over the role from her mother, who was cast as Michelle Pfeiffer in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Still, it’s crazy to imagine if Johansson didn’t find time, the MCU we are now experiencing might’ve been quite a bit different. Perhaps the adventure into the multiverse opens up the possibility for her to tackle the role after all.

  • REPORT: ‘She-Hulk’ Will Set Up a ‘World War Hulk’ Movie, Eyeing 2022 Production Start

REPORT: ‘She-Hulk’ Will Set Up a ‘World War Hulk’ Movie, Eyeing 2022 Production Start

We’ve long wondered if Hulk would ever get his solo project. Especially with the announcement of She-Hulk’s Disney+ series, it seemed like the Green Goliath was going to continue his run as a supporting character. Yet, it seems that the time has finally come for Hulk to take the spotlight, as Geeks World Wide has shared that Mark Ruffalo is set to return in his feature film inspired by the World War Hulk storyline. It looks like it’s also been planned for some time as it’s eyeing a late 2022 production start. There is also the hint that this is the first of many potential Hulk films.

The aspect of this that truly stands out is that it confirms Disney and Marvel Studios have regained the rights to Hulk. As GWW points out, for a long time it seemed that the rights were in the hands of Universal. Yet, the moment we heard that Namor would potentially appear in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it opened the floodgates. The character was also famously owned by the competition, but still no word on any Hulk project. This report might be our first hint that they truly regained all the rights.

If this is indeed the next project, it opens up the question of how She-Hulk may set up this story. Of course, the story might be quite a bit different from what we are used to from the comics. Plus, it makes you wonder if She-Hulk has a role in this story. There’s a lot of potential in their take on the story.

  • Brian Tyree Henry Comments On Race And Body Image Informing His Role in ‘ETERNALS’

Brian Tyree Henry Comments On Race And Body Image Informing His Role in ‘ETERNALS’

Marvel Studios’ Eternals features a sprawling and diverse cast, with people of multiple ethnicities and backgrounds working both in front of and behind the camera. During a global press conference earlier today, actor Brian Tyree Henry was asked about his knowledge-driven character’s relationship with Earth’s population and what may have had an effect on Phastos’ view of humanity. His intricate response discussed the role race most likely played in Phastos’ view of the world:

The thing that really attracted me to this part was that I just think about all the images of Black men out there and how we are portrayed. And what I loved the most about Phastos is that, one, he’s an ancestor. All of us are ancestors technically, so Phastos predates everything and had to probably go through all these things which could actually make someone lose faith in humanity very quickly.

    He continues:

I remember when I was coming to this project that I, Brian, had kind of lost faith in humanity…what the images of black men were and how we were being portrayed and how the power was taken from us. The lack of power, and what I love the most about Phastos is that through all of that, him being Eternal, him never being able to die, he still chose love. He still decided to have a family even though he may have to watch them perish. He still tried to find a way to bring heart and love to everything he did… It just really resonated with me, it really resonated a lot with how I felt my place in society was. Y’know, we can be kings and queens and at the same time they’ll take our pedestal and take our superpowers from us like that. What I love about Eternals is that Chloe and Nate really just re-instilled that power back in me again.

Henry finished his comments by explaining how much he appreciated not being required to change his body image for the role, something many actors and actresses have had to do in the past:

I remember the first time they were like “So we want you to be a superhero”, I was like “Well, how much weight do I have to lose?” and Chloe was like “What are you talking about? We want you exactly as you are.” And to be a black man and have someone look at you and say “We want you exactly as you are” is unlike anything I have ever felt.

Marvel’s Eternals releases in cinemas soon, on November 5, 2021.

  • Kit Harington Talks ‘Eternals’ Opening and Dane Whitman’s Role in the Film

Kit Harington Talks ‘Eternals’ Opening and Dane Whitman’s Role in the Film

There are many mysteries surrounding Eternals, but none are as curious as what role Kit Harington might have in the film. We know he’ll play the modern-day Black Knight, Dane Whitman, but later learned he won’t even wield the iconic Ebony Blade in the film. The only connection we have to his comic counterpart is a ring that found its way online as merchandise. Luckily, Harington might have given us a clearer picture of his role in the film.

As we’re nearing the film’s release, the press tour has finally started and Harington was asked about his take on the character of Dane Whitman. They joked about the poor guy in the middle of superhero actions keeping his calm. The actor goes on to highlight that his character centers on what the Eternals are fighting for while also teasing his role early on in the story.

In the beginning, I had to represent something that was worth saving maybe. I hope that Dane comes across as a nice, stand-up guy. One thing I really respect him for is that a man flies out of the sky and shoots lasers out of his eyes and steals his girlfriend and he’s kind of cool with it.

    Kit Harrington

He goes on to highlight his experience and how strange it was only really having a role in the opening moments. In the press interview, he even jokingly highlights how disconnected he was from the rest of the film.

So, that’s Dane. It was an odd movie for me. I come in at the start, in some ways intro the movie and the movie goes its direction with these wonderful people, this wonderful cast.

    Kit Harrington

His character anchoring the story and Eternals overall motivation is a great way to humanize them. We’ll see if he potentially has a larger role at a later point in the film, but it sounds like they had some fun with the way the love triangle plays into the story. From the looks of it, Whitman has pulled the short end of the stick in this one.

  • Richard Madden Calls Ikaris A “Soldier Driven By Love” In Marvel’s ‘ETERNALS’

Richard Madden Calls Ikaris A “Soldier Driven By Love” In Marvel’s ‘ETERNALS’

Marvel Studios’ Eternals is set to release to the public in cinemas on November 5, but the press train has already begun to chug down the tracks. In a global press conference earlier today, actor Richard Madden spoke about the internal conflict of his character, Ikaris, as it’s portrayed throughout the film. It’s been known for some time that Eternals would be heavily influenced by the love story between Madden’s hero and Gemma Chan‘s Sersi, and now the leading man has commented directly on how it’s made the experience playing Ikaris different from his previous roles:

I really loved it. I’m kind of used to playing lovers often, and to play someone who’s such a soldier but is completely driven by love. All his decisions are driven by love and it’s actually him that’s wrestling with that. I’m used to characters who are very focused on their love and that comes out, and with Ikaris it’s the opposite of that. He’s kind of trying to bury that love because it gets in the way of his duty and he’s constantly wrestling the two.

The former Game of Thrones star continued with an explanation of how this direction for the character made an impact on his portrayal of the role:

And that’s kind of what made it really interesting for me to pull out that relationship with all the characters, from Sprite to Sersi, and kind of work out what this relationship is when you’re trying to stick to duty but feelings get in the way.

These quotes go a long way in hinting at the idea that Eternals could be an overwhelmingly human experience, despite focusing mainly on gods and monsters. The film releases shortly, so we won’t have long to find out.

  • ‘The Marvels’ Nia DaCosta on Exploring Captain Marvel’s Humanity

‘The Marvels’ Nia DaCosta on Exploring Captain Marvel’s Humanity

Marvel Studios has quite an array of projects on the horizon. We’ll get introduced to a multitude of new heroes while others are making their grand return. Among them, The Marvels will take on that role for multiple characters. The sequel will not only continue Captain Marvel’s storyline from 2019 but also introduce a variety of heroes that are only recently joining the franchise on Disney+. They might even introduce others moving forward, as some castings hint at other iconic heroes joining. Director Nia DaCosta has been vocal about her approach to the film and she wants to explore pain and trauma in the story. In a new interview with Inverse, she also highlighted how she wants to approach exploring Brie Larson‘s Captain Marvel in the sequel.

That’s a really good question. For The Marvels, my biggest thing going into it was making sure I approached these characters as human beings and not necessarily as superheroes. I want to know more about Captain Marvel. Who is she? What are her fears? What drives her? How do you actually deal with being the most powerful being in the universe? How does that weigh on you? That’s the sort of thing I want to explore.

    Nia DaCosta

It’s an interesting approach, as Captain Marvel faces a similar issue that Superman has. With their abilities and powers, it’s not an easy task to find an appropriate antagonist for them to face that challenges them. Their approach to twist that concept and also using it as a basis to challenge the classic superhero formula is a great move.

  • James Gunn Confirms ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Has Finished Casting

James Gunn Confirms ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Has Finished Casting

It feels like fans have been waiting a lifetime for the release of Marvel’s highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Luckily Chris Pratt teased that production is soon underway in a brief video from set today. Shortly before, Gunn took to Twitter today to reveal that the third installment in his sci-fi trilogy has completed it’s casting process, which supposedly started all the way back in April. The news from Gunn comes on the heels of a big announcement about the casting of Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, a perfect being created by Elizabeth Debicki‘s Ayesha who was teased during the end credits of Vol. 2.

    https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1450460839077625866?s=20

The phrasing of the tweet seems to hint at multiple new additions to the film, presumably on top of Poulter‘s Warlock. It’s unknown who these other new actors are, or who they might be playing, but it’s likely this information will come to light as the start of production quickly approaches. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will see the return of all the franchise’s major players, including Chris Pratt‘s Star-Lord and Zoe Saldana‘s time displaced Gamora, on the heels of their guest appearance in Taika Waititi‘s Thor: Love and Thunder. The film currently has a release date of May 5, 2023, though it is yet to be seen if that will be impacted by the recent delay of Marvel’s other Phase 4 entries like Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
