Details Emerge on Nic Cage’s ‘Spider-Noir’ Streaming Series

After spending a little more than a year in development, Amazon and MGM+ are now moving forward on their live-action Spider-Man Noir streaming series starring Nic Cage. After debuting in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Cage’s character became a fan favorite which led producers Phil LordChris Miller, and Amy Pascal to put gears in motion on the project with Oren Uziel developing the scripts. The series, titled Spider-Noir, series will tell “the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.” Now, as casting on the project gets underway, details about Spider-Noir have begun to emerge.

As was originally reported, Cage’s Depression-era hero won’t be a variant of Peter Parker but rather Ben Reilly. Brendan Gleeson was recently cast and some new information on the project from a reliable source may reveal which Spidey villain he’ll be playing. Insider Daniel RPK has shared a brief of the project’s plot which includes NYC mob boss Silvermane and cop turned vigilante Yuri Watanabe.

We follow Ben Reilly, a PI, as he stumbles down a rabbit hole of corruption in 1933 New York City, while also establishing his past as a superhero. Reilly investigates the death of Edward Addison, which leads him to discover that the Mayor is up to something nefarious that involves crime boss Silvermane and femme fatale Yuri Watanabe.

It does seem possible that Gleeson could fill the role of Silvermane though there’s already some speculation that he might portray the Noir universe’s Norman Osborn. Gleeson joins a cast that currently only consists of Cage and Lamorne Morris (New Girl), who is set to play Daily Bugle editor Robbie Robertson. With casting underway, Spider-Noir should begin filming late in 2024 which means much more information on the project will come to light over the next several months.

With Cage signing on, the project has been given a full series order rather than just a pilot episode.

  • ‘X-Men ’97’: Director Removes One Possible Perpetrator of the Genoshan Massacre from the List of Suspects

‘X-Men ’97’: Director Removes One Possible Perpetrator of the Genoshan Massacre from the List of Suspects

Episode 5 of X-Men ’97, “Remember It”, was indeed memorable. In one of the most shocking episodes of Marvel Studios-produced TV to date, “Remember It” saw the mutant island nation of Genosha attacked by a Wild Sentinel. The body count from the attack seemed to include Gambit and Magneto, both of whom sacrificed themselves in amazing displays of their powers in order to save other mutants, including Rogue, who was in quite a particular pickle before the attack. Theories about who perpetrated the attack on the island have taken over social media and message boards and a few names have risen to the top of the suspect list. However, according to X-Men ’97’s key creatives, it’s time to remove one of the most popular potential mass murderers from the list.

Unfortunately for the X-Men, the list of characters who have enacted terrible schemes resulting in the mass murder of mutants is pretty expansive. However, the mutant body count of one of those villains stands above the rest. In Grant Morrison’s New X-Men arc, “E is for Extinction”, Cassandra Nova–the twin sister of Charles Xavier–murdered 16,000,000 mutants in a matter of minutes in what became known as the Genoshan genocide. That arc served as the template for “Remember It” but according to supervising producer Jake Castorena, fans should not expect to learn Nova was behind the attack.

In an interview with Inverse, Castorena scratched her name off the list of suspects saying, “I wouldn’t get my hopes up for Cassandra Nova being a huge villain in our show. But what I will say is, I don’t think people will be disappointed with our choices.” Though she’s not behind the attack, it seems as though the creative team has thought plenty about Xavier’s twisted twin. Emi Yonemura, who directed Episode 5, explained what she loves about Nova and may have given some insight into the team’s plans for the character. “I love her because she is a challenge for Xavier. I really love the tensions that she brings, the whole other level that she brings,” said Yonemura. “I love her character design as well. I cannot say where we go, but I think what’s so nice about using the original series and the comics for where we start [is that it] gives us so many options with so many rich characters like Cassandra to get to play with.” So while Nova won’t be popping in for a visit next week, it sounds as though she’s certainly a good bet to appear once Charles returns from his respite in Shi’ar space.

The first five episodes of X-Men ’97 are not streaming on Disney Plus.

    About Cassandra Nova

Cassandra Nova is a formidable antagonist within the Marvel Universe, renowned for her cunning intellect and ruthless demeanor. As a mutant with telepathic abilities, she poses a significant threat to the X-Men and all who oppose her nefarious schemes. With a shape-shifting prowess that rivals even the most skilled adversaries, Cassandra Nova is a master manipulator who utilizes her powers to infiltrate and subvert the most secure organizations.

The Twisted Twin Sister of Charles Xavier

Conceived as the malevolent counterpart to Charles Xavier, Cassandra Nova embodies the darkest aspects of mutant potential. In a shocking twist of fate, Charles Xavier, unaware of his twin sister’s existence, unknowingly attacked Cassandra Nova while she was still in the womb. This event, shrouded in mystery and tragedy, set the stage for their tumultuous relationship and Cassandra’s eventual emergence as a formidable antagonist within the Marvel Universe. The repercussions of this prenatal conflict reverberate throughout their intertwined destinies, shaping the course of their lives and the fate of mutantkind.

Emerging from the depths of the Xavier Institute’s history, she has been a constant thorn in the side of the X-Men, often orchestrating elaborate plots to undermine their efforts for peace and equality. With ties to the Shi’ar Empire and Genosha, Cassandra Nova’s reach extends far beyond the borders of Earth, making her a global threat of unparalleled magnitude.

    A Powerful Adversary

Driven by an insatiable thirst for power and domination, Cassandra Nova’s ambitions know no bounds. Whether manipulating world leaders or inciting conflicts between mutants and humans, she seeks to sow chaos and discord at every turn. Her ultimate goal remains shrouded in mystery, but one thing is certain: Cassandra Nova will stop at nothing to achieve her malevolent objectives.

Possessing a genius-level intellect and unparalleled telepathic abilities, Cassandra Nova is a formidable adversary capable of outwitting even the most seasoned heroes. Her shape-shifting prowess allows her to assume any form, making her a master of deception and subterfuge. Ruthless and manipulative, she will exploit any weakness to further her own agenda, leaving destruction in her wake.

Cassandra Nova’s modus operandi revolves around manipulation, scheming, and plotting. With a penchant for orchestrating elaborate schemes, she seeks to undermine her enemies from within, using their own vulnerabilities against them. Whether infiltrating secure facilities or instigating conflicts, she employs a wide array of tactics to achieve her goals, leaving chaos and destruction in her wake.

Coming Soon to the MCUDeadpool 3 Trailer Reveals First Look At Major New X-Men Villain As Powerful As Professor X

Cassandra Nova will make her live-action debut in Deadpool and Wolverine. Played by Emma Corrin, Nova will be the primary antagonist of the film and is rumored to be in a position of power in The Void, a region outside of time where pruned Variants are sent by the TVA.

Deadpool and Wolverine hits theaters on July 26th.

  • ‘Thunderbolts’: New Rumor Has Bucky Barnes Sidelined in the 2025 Ensemble

‘Thunderbolts’: New Rumor Has Bucky Barnes Sidelined in the 2025 Ensemble

Marvel Studios Thunderbolts has faced its fair share of delays since being announced in 2022. The project’s script has passed through several writers since Black Widow scribe Eric Pearson‘s first draft came in. Most recently, The Bear showrunner Joanna Calo was brought on board to take a pass at the script just as cameras are finally set to roll in Atlanta. Sporting an ensemble cast that includes Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour and Lewis Pullman as the powerful Sentry, the project seems loaded with potential; however a new rumor indicates that a fan-favorite character won’t have as large of a role as once thought.

Though details on the film’s plot are scarce, it’s said that the story “centers on villains and antiheroes going on a mission that was supposed to end with their deaths.” When the film’s cast was introduced by Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios One-Above-All said that Bucky would serve as the “de facto leader” of the team. While that may have been true at the time, according to insider Daniel RPK, that no longer seems to be the case.

Though he was front-and-center on the concept art released for the film in 2022, RPK has indicated that not only is Sebastian Stan’s Bucky not one of the film’s main characters but also that some other, surprising characters are potentially set to play a larger role. In response to a line of questioning on X, RPK claimed that “Bucky is definitely NOT a co-lead with Yelena” and provided a list in which he laid out the priority taken by each character in the film. Bucky, as it turns out, is right near the bottom with characters such as Russell’s U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost and even Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster ahead of him.

As has been shared before, the film was originally a nearly full-fledged sequel to 2021’s Black Widow but even as rewrites have changed the film a bit, it’s still Pugh’s film to lead and thus she’s surrounded by supporting characters from her first MCU appearance. While there’s plenty of intrigue around why a character as popular as Barnes might not be one of the film’s leads, there’s less question about why Harbour’s Red Guardian won’t have a ton of screen time. With Thunderbolts having worked through multiple delays, it’s now filming right smack dab in the middle of production on Stranger Things Season 5, meaning the project will have to make due with whatever they can get out of Harbour.

Bucky’s potential role in Thunderbolts has always been an interesting one. Though he was introduced as part of the team, which is clearly going to be run by Dreyfus‘ CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the two have never interacted. While she recruited Yelena Belova and John Walker, Bucky never seemed to be on her radar. Furthermore, what we’ve seen of Val’s intentions for the team would seem ideologically opposed to where Bucky found himself at the end of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Wharver the case, it seems far more likely that Bucky will be doing his own thing in the film rather than taking orders from Val.

Thunderbolts hits theaters on May 2, 2025.

  • 5 for 5: Possible Titles for Marvel Studios Next Avengers Film

5 for 5: Possible Titles for Marvel Studios Next Avengers Film

The Kang Dynasty is no more! In a move made to distance the next Avengers film from some significant bad juju related to the character played by Jonathan Majors before his dismissal from his Marvel contract, Marvel Studios is reportedly in theaeket for a new title for what was originally Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Currently being written by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Avengers: Secret Wars scribe Michael Waldron, the film is currently slated for a May 1, 2026 (and could easily move off that date) release which means there’s no rush to retitle it; however, since they’re in the market for a new subtitle, we thought we’d toss out a few ideas.

    Avengers: Secret Wars

But that’s the title of the sixth Avengers film!

As it stands Avengers 6, aka Avengers: Secret Wars is due out May 7, 2027 but there are a couple of scenarios in which Marvel could consider renaming Avengers 5 as Avengers: Secret Wars and then finding a new title for Avengers 6.

The most obvious–and honestly lest desirable–scenario would be to make the two-part finale to the Multiverse Saga a true Part 1 and Part 2. In that case, the 2026 film could titled Avengers: Secret Wars, Avengers: Secret Wars-Part 1 or Avengers: Secret Wars I. That would pave the way for the 2027 film to be retitled as Avengers: Secret Wars-Part 2 or, if they wanted to snag a title from a Marvel Comics event, Avengers: Secret Wars II, a 1985 follow-up to the original 1984 Secret Wars. Both of those events features the Beyonder, who could easily be worked into the Multiverse Saga as the true big bad rather than Kang.

Another option that could be paired with retitling Avengers 5 as Avengers: Secret Wars is to retitle Avengers 6 as Avengers: Heroes Reborn. The title will be familiar to comic readers as it was used first in 1996 and again in 2021. Depending on what’s in store for the heroes of the MCU’s 616 universe in Avengers 5, the idea of the heroes finding themselves in another universe unaware of their past deeds is fairly fertile ground for storytelling. It’s also the kind of thing The Beyonder might do should he become the main threat of the Multiverse Saga.

    Avengers: Time Runs Out

Jonathan Hickman‘s 2015 Secret Wars seems to be providing at least some inspiration for Marvel Studios as they plot their course to Avengers: Secret Wars. While it’s still unclear just how much inspiration the film will take from Hickman’s sci-fi heavy event, the idea of incursions –which first appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness–was lifted directly from the author’s Avengers/New Avengers run that led to Secret Wars. Told over 20 issues of Avengers and New Avengers, Time Runs Out was the prelude to Secret Wars. Depending on how the studio wants to play it, Avengers 5 could, at the very least, borrow the title and start the countdown to Avengers: Secret Wars.

    Avengers Assemble

Marvel Studios could cash in a lot of chips should they choose to go with Avengers Assemble. The title of an animated series that ran for 5 seasons, a recent Jason Aaron limited comic book series and THE catch phrase of the team, Avengers Assemble would draw a lot of eyes and make a whole bunch of sense because right now, the Avengers aren’t really a thing in the MCU. A new team will have to come together to take on whatever threat the studio goes with and calling a film in which Avengers assemble Avengers Assemble is hardly the worst option.

    Avengers: Battleworld

For fans of Marvel Comics, there’s really nothing more associated with the premise of Secret Wars than Battleworld. Whether created by The Beyonder in 1984’s Secret Wars or by Doctor Doom in 2015’s Secret Wars, the patchwork planet is the central setting where heroes fend for themselves against themselves as they figure out exactly what’s going down. Given the current trajectory, it would seem the MCU’s version of Battleworld might more closely resemble the 2015 version where universes that survived incursions merged into a planet full of weird, wild domains. No, this does not require the presence of Doctor Doom. This option best fits with the idea of the Multiversal War that fans have been expecting since Season 1 of Loki first teased it.

    Avengers Forever

If the studio is looking to recast Kang the Conqueror and take him off the board ahead of Avengers: Secret Wars, they need look no further than Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pancheo’s 1998 Marvel masterwork, Avengers Forever. While a direct adaptation of the 12-issue limited series would be far too convoluted for a film, there’s a simpler version that can be pulled from the bones of Busiek and Pancheo’s book. The book pitted two Kang variants–The Conqueror and Immortus–against one another, pulled Avengers from different points in their timelines to create a new team and temporarily resulted in the Immortus variant being killed off. An adaptation of this would easily allow Marvel Studios to bring back Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and even Scarlett Johansson which would certainly result in a massive box office take. The studio could also opt to include Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine on the squad along with one or more Spider-Man(s) and honestly damn near any other hero they want given the nature of alternate timelines.

  • ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ Rewatch-Deadly Reunions

‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ Rewatch-Deadly Reunions

X-Men: The Animated Series premiered in 1992 and quickly became a beloved adaptation of the popular Marvel Comics series. Known for its faithful portrayal of the iconic mutant superhero team, the show captivated audiences with its engaging storytelling, dynamic characters, and thrilling action sequences. Beginning March 20th, Marvel Animation will roll out an all-new revival of the series, X-Men ’97.

After introducing the team in the two-part series premiere (“Night of the Sentinels Part 1” and “Night of the Sentinels Part 2”), the series’ third episode introduced Magneto and the Brotherhood of Mutants in “Enter Magneto.” Episode 4, “Deadly Reunions”, delves into the shared past of Magneto and the X-Men’s Charles Xavier.

    A World in Turmoil

Against the backdrop of escalating tensions between mutants and humans, “Deadly Reunions” opens with the introduction of Magneto’s former ally and protege, Professor Xavier. Xavier, the telepathic leader of the X-Men, has devoted his life to promoting peace and understanding between mutants and humans. However, his efforts are continually challenged by the actions of individuals like Magneto, whose radical beliefs and actions threaten to destabilize the delicate balance of power in the world.

    Revisiting the Past

The episode delves into the complicated history between Xavier and Magneto, revealing their shared past as friends and allies in the fight for mutant rights. However, their friendship was torn apart by ideological differences, leading Magneto down a path of extremism and violence. Now, years later, Magneto resurfaces, seeking revenge against his former friend and the X-Men for perceived betrayals and injustices. As Magneto’s presence looms over the X-Men, they must confront their own pasts and grapple with the consequences of their actions, setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation that will test their bonds of friendship and loyalty to the breaking point.

As Magneto launches a series of devastating attacks on key military installations, the X-Men are thrust into a race against time to stop him before he unleashes chaos and destruction on a global scale. Led by Cyclops, the X-Men mobilize to thwart Magneto’s plans and protect innocent lives from harm, but they quickly realize that defeating Magneto will require more than just brute force—it will require them to confront the painful truths of their shared history and find a way to reconcile their differences.

    Reunion with a Dark Past

“Deadly Reunions” also delves into the troubled past of Wolverine, one of the X-Men’s most enigmatic members, as he comes face to face with his former mentor turned nemesis, Sabretooth. The episode explores the deep-seated animosity between Wolverine and Sabretooth, delving into their shared history and the unresolved conflicts that have defined their tumultuous relationship. As old wounds are reopened and bitter rivalries reignited, Wolverine finds himself confronting the ghosts of his past and grappling with the demons that continue to haunt him to this day.

Sabretooth plays a pivotal role as a central antagonist, confronting Wolverine and reigniting their long-standing feud. Sabretooth’s appearance dredges up painful memories and unresolved conflicts from Wolverine’s past, as the two mutants engage in a fierce battle fueled by years of animosity and bitterness. Sabretooth’s savage nature and relentless pursuit of Wolverine serve as a stark reminder of the darkness that lurks within the mutant community, highlighting the constant struggle between the X-Men’s ideals of peace and tolerance and the harsh realities of a world torn apart by prejudice and fear. As Wolverine grapples with his inner demons and confronts the ghosts of his past, Sabretooth emerges as a formidable adversary, pushing him to his limits and testing the strength of his convictions. Ultimately, Sabretooth’s role in “Deadly Reunions” serves to deepen the complexity of the X-Men universe, shedding light on the darker aspects of mutant society and the ongoing battle between good and evil.

    The Xavier-Magneto Confrontation

The heart of “Deadly Reunions” lies in the tense confrontation between Professor Xavier and Magneto, two powerful mutants whose paths have diverged dramatically since their days as friends and allies. As Xavier confronts Magneto, he is forced to grapple with the painful memories of their shared past and the choices that led them down different paths. Meanwhile, Magneto, driven by a deep-seated desire for revenge and vindication, refuses to back down, determined to prove the superiority of mutantkind and assert his dominance over humanity. Their clash of wills and ideologies serves as a microcosm of the larger struggle between mutants and humans, as they each represent competing visions for the future of mutantkind—one rooted in cooperation and understanding, the other in dominance and conquest.

As the battle between Xavier and Magneto reaches its climax, the true cost of their conflict becomes painfully clear. Innocent lives hang in the balance as the X-Men and Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants clash in a destructive showdown that threatens to tear apart the very fabric of society. Caught in the crossfire, ordinary citizens are forced to confront their own prejudices and fears, as they witness firsthand the destructive power of hatred and intolerance. In the aftermath of the battle, the X-Men are left to pick up the pieces and reckon with the consequences of their actions, knowing that the fight for peace and coexistence is far from over.

The Rise of Mutant Internment Camps

“Deadly Reunions” introduces a chilling development in mutant-human relations with the establishment of mutant internment camps. These facilities, reminiscent of the darkest chapters of human history, serve as symbols of the escalating persecution faced by mutants in a world gripped by fear and prejudice. The creation of these camps represents a dangerous shift in government policy, as mutants are rounded up and imprisoned simply for being who they are. The existence of the internment camps underscores the gravity of the situation facing mutants and the lengths to which some will go to maintain their power and control. As the X-Men confront the horrors of these camps, they are forced to confront the harsh realities of a world divided by fear and intolerance, as well as the urgent need to fight for the rights and freedoms of all people, regardless of their genetic makeup.

    Lessons Learned

“Deadly Reunions” concludes with a sense of reflection and introspection, as the X-Men come to terms with the events that have transpired and the lessons they have learned along the way. Despite the challenges they have faced and the sacrifices they have made, the X-Men remain committed to their mission of protecting both mutants and humans and striving for a better world. As they look to the future, they know that the road ahead will be difficult and fraught with danger, but they also know that as long as they stand together, they can overcome any obstacle and triumph over adversity.

  • Digital Platform and Physical Media Release Dates for ‘The Marvels’ Revealed

Digital Platform and Physical Media Release Dates for ‘The Marvels’ Revealed

Though it was a fun, fast-paced adventure, The Marvels will ultimately be remembered as Marvel Studios biggest bust to date. Finishing its domestic run with roughly $205M, the film is by far the lowest grossing MCU project to date and continued a worrisome trend of landing neither with critics nor audiences. That said, there’s always the possibility that–like some of Disney’s other less-than-successful films of late–it finds an audience at home. And now that it’s out of theater, it’s been revealed when The Marvels will hit digital platforms and be available for purchase at retailers.

USA Today broke the news that The Marvels will be available for purchase on digital platforms such as Vudu, Amazon Prime and more on January 16th.

Blu-ray and 4K UHD copies will hit shelves on February 13th, just about 3 months after the film began it’s theatrical run. That’s a pretty standard timeline for Marvel’s films though some have landed on either side of that window.

Like many other recent MCU projects, The Marvels reportedly underwent a serious facelift in post-production and that may have led to the film’s choppy feel. Additionally, the ongoing strikes in Hollywood cut out a significant portion of the publicity tour that typically accompanies Marvel’s projects.

  • Mahershala Ali Shares Motivating Update on Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade’

Mahershala Ali Shares Motivating Update on Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade’

It’s kind of crazy to think how long ago Mahershala Ali was announced as the iconic vampire hunter Blade. We all were quite excited to see the direction this take on the iconic character would take, especially with the potential of it being one of Marvel Studios’ first R-rated projects. Yet, we still are waiting for it to start filming after COVID delays and these strikes.

Some even believed that Ali may have lost interest in the project given how long it took up until now to get the ball rolling. Luckily, it seems he’s still very much attached to the project as he reveals in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that they are still actively working on the project.

We’re working on it. That’s the best I could tell you. I’m really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we’ll be back at it relatively soon.

    Mahershala Ali

In the same interview, he adds that he is “sincerely encouraged” regarding those involved in directing and writing the project since it went through several creatives since the initial announcement. We even had a director attached in Bassam Tariq who left the project at one point.

I’m sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who’s on board and who’s leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that. So that’s the extent of what I can tell you.

    Mahershala Ali

It’s definitely great news to hear that Blade is still happening (for now) and we’ll see if they might end up starting production sooner rather than later to hit that initially expected 2025 release date. For now, we still have to wait for the next update. Yann Demange is currently attached to direct and there hasn’t been a change in director so far.

  • UPDATE: Pedro Pascal In Talks for ‘Fantastic Four’

UPDATE: Pedro Pascal In Talks for ‘Fantastic Four’

UPDATE: After /Film revealed that Pedro Pascal has signed on for Fantastic Four, Deadline has reportedly shared that while he is definitely in talks: “a deal is far from done.” Supposedly it is heading in the right direction and while he’s busy the next year, scheduling will work out for him to take on the role. So, unless some big surprise drops, it seems very likely he’ll have the role.

    Source: Deadline

Earlier today, there were rumors that a new frontrunner has emerged for the role of Reed Richards in the upcoming Fantastic Four film. Many have supposedly declined the role since the first wave of castings started but The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal surprisingly came out as the next potential person to take on the role.

Well, a new report by /Film has seemingly stated that not only was he offered the role but according to their sources he’s already signed on. The rumor started with Daniel RPK sharing that he was the next in line shortly followed by Jeff Sneider supporting the rumor. Though that’s not including the crazy rumors that have piled on before and during the pandemic.

For now, it’s still not a full confirmation but further hints that Marvel’s First Family might be slowly coming together on the big screen. A variety of actors have supposedly been up for the role ranging from Adam Driver to Matt Smith, as well as MCU veternals like John Krasinski (who even played a Variant of the character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Spider-Man’s Jake Gyllenhaal.

The big question though is how he’ll juggle his roles in other projects like The Last of Us, The Mandalorian, and many more. He hasn’t been actively showing up in the Star Wars series and mainly focuses on voicing the character of Din Djarin, but scheduling conflicts with The Last of Us’ second season is definitely going to impact when Marvel Studios can start work on the Fantastic Four. Though given current developments it was going to need a bit more time anyway.

  • Marvel Studios is at a Crossroads

Marvel Studios is at a Crossroads

Marvel Studios’ has faced its worst opening weekend with The Marvels. Is it a simple discussion surrounding superhero or Marvel fatigue? Going by just how varied the discussions are online, it’s very likely not as simple as anyone wants it to be. One could discuss the impact of the last few years, a rough 2023 box office for blockbusters, the SAG as well as WGA strikes, and many more factors. So, there might simply not be a singular reason and just a lot of elements coming together.

Of course, these kinds of numbers establish the expected “end” of Marvel Studios’ discussion online. Articles have dropped announcing that the films are no longer events which is why no one is watching them. Certain subsections proclaim the end of Marvel due to “wokeness” and whatever personal reason one has when leaving the franchise behind as “it should’ve ended with Endgame” echoes throughout the dark corners of the web. For years, the discussion was that superhero movies would go the way of the Western and if that point has been reached, we’ll likely see a very different Marvel Studios moving forward.

As such, it seems like the perfect time to discuss what exactly the future might hold for Marvel Studios and likely the results that’ll come from this blow at the box office. We have no insight into what Marvel Studios will truly do moving forward but there are already some minor hints that may tease what the future has in store and what we can expect from the studio that reinvented blockbusters for over 15 years. We’re at a crossroads and potentially the beginning of a new era moving forward.

    First Signs Exist in 2023

Bob Iger returned as the CEO of Disney, which saw Bob Chapek try his best to figure out what exactly they would be doing during a pandemic. He carried over the Disney+ goals that were started by his predecessor only to buckle under the weight and get replaced. Yet, Iger’s run since hasn’t been something one would describe as a “return to form” but he has pointed out that a reduction of releases is something they are definitely going to review the future.

At the time the pandemic hit, we were leaning into a huge increase in how much we were making. And I’ve always felt that quantity can be actually a negative when it comes to quality, and I think that’s exactly what happened. We lost some focus.

    Bob Iger

2023 was still a big push from all studios to make bank after a rough pandemic, but it has led to many films fizzling out. As much as we want to point to Barbenheimer and Super Mario Bros. Movie as a showcase of how strong the year was: it simply wasn’t. Many films have bloated budgets due to filming during COVID and subsequently were never going to truly make their money back outside of some massive numbers. Prices are on the rise and with a cost of living crisis affecting people’s decisions, it becomes clear that people are far more selective than they’ve ever been (a reason it’s not as simple as just fatigue).

One thing is clear though: we’ll see fewer releases moving forward. We already saw the reduction of output in 2023 with only two Disney+ series hitting the streaming service with quite a bit of time between each release; even if Secret Invasion didn’t quite help matters. The Marvels was pushed from July to November, which ended up hurting it due to the actor’s strike heavily hampering its promotion build-up. So, we’re already in the middle of a transition phase for the studio.

    New Disney+ Strategy

Actually, there is one new highlight I ended up leaving out and that is Marvel Spotlight. Out of nowhere, Marvel Studios unveiled an entirely new banner just for their “grounded” stories that aren’t necessary for the major storyline being told throughout the phases. It was a strategic move that definitely left some ripples alongside a strong first impression with Echo’s trailer. Ever since there’s been a bit more positivity in the air that was definitely needed for the franchise that has been. Of course, outlets were still ready to say it’s too late or won’t fix any of the issues it’s facing. Head of Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, shared the inspiration for this new brand:

Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity. Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic.

It’s unclear if this might just become the de facto banner for the Disney+ shows and the way it is being described is to ease viewers into it. The fact of the matter is: there’s a lot of debate about Disney+ and the film’s connections potentially muddling viewership a bit, especially with The Marvels that technically ties into multiple stories. While many have been quick to point out that every Marvel film quickly introduces elements from these shows and doesn’t require audiences to do the homework they complain about online, it’s a clever way to just visually create a distinction and ease audiences in.

Still, one thing that the Disney+ shows should do is focus primarily on becoming the venue of exploring either side stories from movie characters or simply setting up its own subset within the grander universe. In a way, they could take the Defenders approach from Netflix and simply have its own little build-up with various characters that can bleed into Avengers releases that tie the entire Phase together. Small references here or there could ease viewers in but not lead to discussions of: “why is Ms. Marvel headlining a movie, does it mean I need to watch her show to know who she is?”

Daredevil and Echo could become the grounded, street-level heroes on Disney+ that are visually and much more distinct from what they do with the movies. That would also help make the films stand out more, as these shows are no longer just as bombastic and expensive as their main counterparts. Agents of SHIELD worked as a complementary series that looked like it was part of the universe but distinctively is a TV series.

    New Cinematic Strategy

2024 will only give us Deadpool 3 and that likely is mainly due to the writer’s strike but also potentially a deliberate choice to restructure next year. The only question is if they will stick with their 2025 schedule, which now includes three releases as is the usual norm for the studio. Yet, we might see them move away from that once they start reshuffling moving forward.

The biggest problem that plagues these films is the production costs that have ballooned since COVID. The Marvels marks the final production that occurred during that time with everything heading our way in the coming years once again being under somewhat normal production rules for the studio moving forward. Though the SAG and WGA strikes are definitely going to show their thorns with Captain America: Brave New World which is getting extensive reshoots and Deadpool 3.

Still, it would seem wise to perhaps pull back a bit going into 2025. Once again rolling out three films and who knows how many Disney+ series might just set them right back to where they are currently. Perhaps going back to the days of two releases a year to slowly build up momentum again might be the best way forward.

Hell, if they do it right they could have one major event release per year with a bigger budget behind it, something we might see with Captain America 4, and then try to focus on a smaller project in that same year which can make back its money with even a softer release. Blade is rumored to have a $100M production budget and would perfectly fit that very bill. Once things “normalize” we might see the old MCU budgets back in action, as the current ones are definitely not intended. That way they can build up relevance and still given minor characters a spotlight even if they carry a bigger box office risk.

    No Single Solution

Even making these examples and ideas of how Marvel Studios could move forward; mostly based on what signs are already there; there’s no true single solution to it all. Every franchise will eventually end up in a slump and the box office developments between The Marvels and previous projects are still showcasing a distinction. The current slump may remain an anomaly due to multiple factors affecting its release and the question will be if Deadpool 3 can draw in a crowd given where Marvel stands.

Going into 2024, I wouldn’t expect many more releases outside of Echo and perhaps one more Disney+ series. There’s a chance the binge model works for them so they do make use of it to avoid the series occupying too much time and potentially not leading to the consensus of overwhelming audiences. Yet, this year has proven that they can have a massive success like Loki’s second season and a mild reception like Secret Invasion.

The clear thing is: that once they show more consistency moving forward for audiences as they build toward Avengers: Secret Wars, we might see audiences once again return to theaters to not miss out on the latest Marvel movie. The studio is at a crossroads rather than an immediate stop. Whatever happens, moving forward depends on how they react to this current status and how they decide to build upon it moving forward.
