  • ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Rumored to Feature a Classic Marvel Comics’ Odd Couple in the Lead

‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Rumored to Feature a Classic Marvel Comics’ Odd Couple in the Lead

Despite being two of Marvel’s most popular icons, Spider-Man and Wolverine spent the first few decades of their history largely avoiding each other. The pair finally met in 1982’s Marvel Team-Up #117 and then in 2005, Brian Michael Bendis struck gold when he added both characters to the roster of his New Avengers.

Living together in Avengers Tower, the two quickly developed into the publishing house’s premier “odd couple” with Spider-Man as the talkative, moral optimist and Wolverine as the silent, lethal cynic. Eventually, Wolverine admitted that he respects Peter Parker more than almost anyone because of his unwavering moral compass, telling his fellow heroes that he believed Parker to be “the best of us.” Now it looks as though Marvel Studios is looking to tap into that magic in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Following up on a report by industry insider Daniel Richtman that claimed Hugh Jackman and Tobey Maguire were set to play major roles alongside Tom Holland in Avengers: Secret Wars, social media scooper My Time To Shine Hello has now claimed that Jackman and Maguire are set up to be the leads of the final film of the Multiverse Saga.

According to MTTSH, “The end of Doomsday set up Tobey [Maguire] and Hugh Jackman as the leads of Secret Wars.” Prior reports have indicated that the two heroes will square off in the final act of Avengers: Doomsday before making nice and FINALLY teaming up on the big screen. With reports that Marvel Studios is prepping a new, Hugh Jackman-less Wolverine project, it sounds as though the studio is willimg to give Jackman and Maguire‘s heroes a fitting send off as a thank you for starting the ball rolling on the modern CBM genre in 2000 and 2002, respectively.

  • ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to Feature One of Marvel’s Most Fascinating Secret Societies

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to Feature One of Marvel’s Most Fascinating Secret Societies

As was the case with Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is shaping up to be one wild ride. While it doesn’t appear as though director Destin Daniel Cretton is adapting any one particular story arc or beloved Spidey comic, he seems to be pulling from the character’s greatest hits.

From what can be gleaned about the film from set photos and well-sourced reports, Tom Holland’s Spidey will be overwhelmed in the film, dealing not only with a slew of street-level thugs and crime bosses but also with a bloodthirsty Frank Castle and a rampaging Hulk. And now…undead ninjas.

Following up on previous reports that a horde of ninjas were involved in a prison break scene filmed some time ago, insider Daniel Richtman has confirmed the identity of the group and they are who we thought they were: The Hand.

One of Marvel Comics’ most well-declveloped and fascinating secret societies, The Hand played an overarching role in Netflix’s Defenders-verse series, though they weren’t portrayed particularly true to their comic book counterparts. Given Cretton’s ambitious approach to Brand New Day, it seems likely that will be rectified. Richtman’s report indicates that they’ll be decked out in their traditional red shinobi shōzoku in the film, which will be a big jump from barely being able to see them on screen in Daredevil. But, who’s in charge of the occult assassins these days?

  • The Skinny on the Final Eight Projects in Marvel Studios Multiverse Saga

The Skinny on the Final Eight Projects in Marvel Studios Multiverse Saga

As it was rolled out to fans in Hall H at SDCC ’22, The Multiverse Saga was originally intended to be composed of an incredible 39 projects. However, as part of a mandate from Disney Head Honcho Bob Iger, Marvel Studios deployed the Time Ripper on the 3-phase saga, accelerating its end by cutting projects–both theatrical and streaming–including recently jettisoning a 2027 movie.

We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three. And we’re working hard on what that path is.

    -Bob Iger

The result was a net loss of at least two live-action films while projects such as Armor Wars, Blade, Nova, Strange Academy and Terror Inc. were shelved, in some cases forever. As 2025 enters the home stretch, only eight projects remain on the docket before The Multiverse Saga comes to a close. Ahead of NYCC ’25–where Marvel will update its streaming slate–we look at the remaining projects that pave the way to the end of what’s been a very rocky road for the studio.

    TBD December 2025-Wonder Man

Joss Whedon may have hated on Simon Williams but thanks to Destin Daniel Cretton, the Avengers ionic engine will lead what’s been called “the best Marvel show” after early screenings.

Wonder Man is eight episodes. It’s a very new flavor for Marvel. It’s straight from the minds of Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest. Honestly, it is one of my favorite things ever. I think it’s the best show no one’s ever seen, and I’m very excited to see the audience reaction to it. I think it’s a love letter to what we do as filmmakers. It’s a love letter to acting as a profession, and it’s a very sincere, beautiful show.

    -Brad Winderbaum

The eight-episode series, which Brad Winderbaum called “a two-hander between two amazing characters, this odd couple of Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery” will star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley in those respective roles. Heavily influenced by the comics, including Williams’ time as a West Coast Avenger, Wonder Man will satire the superhero genre by asking “what does Hollywood look like in a world where super heroes are real?”

TBD March 2026-Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

The first season of Marvel Television’s Daredevil: Born Again left Matt Murdock and crew up against it, with Mayor Kingpin having near total control of New York City. Season 2, which will see Krysten Ritter join the cast as drunk private dick Jessica Jones, which executive producer Jesse Wigutow described as “a singular vision,” is likely to be more akin to its Netflix predecessor than what the “jigsawed together” Season 1 ended up being.

Without giving too much away…when you’re working in what I would call the Hell’s Kitchen corner of the MCU, those iconic characters are always in your mind.

    -Showrunner Dario Scardapane

Season 2 will tell “a big New York City story” with crime and politics at its center while exploring the unique relationship between Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock.

    TBD 2026-The Punisher Special Presentation

As Marvel Television continues to transition to the mid-10s Netflix era, Jon Bernthal‘s Frank Castle will find himself at the center of feature sometime in 2026. The Punisher Special Presentation will follow Castle, who was last seen escaping Kingpin’s dungeon prison, as he takes on organized crime, including Ma Gnucci.

It’s like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story.

    -Brad Winderbaum

As one might expect, photos and videos from the New York City set of the project indicated it will be hyper-violent, feeding the blood lust of the TV-MA crowd. It also looks as though it will tee up the next chapter for Castle where he probably won’t be able to be quite so intense.

July 31, 2026-Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton walked away from the sequel to his 2021 film to jump on board Spider-Man: Brand New Day and it sounds as though he’s set to deliver a banger. While the details are a little murky, the fourth installment in the Spidey franchise is beginning to sound like it might be one of the studio’sost ambitious projects ever, with the Hulk, the Punisher and a slee of classic Spidey rogues, including Scorpion and Tombstone, all set to appear. Oh…and maybe that symbiote fragment that got left behind when Essie Brock visited.

[It] really feels like we aren’t making the fourth movie. We’re making the first movie in the chapter… This is a rebirth. This is something completely new.

    Tom Holland

Star Tom Holland has made it clear that he wants to make something special for the fans and adding Cretton’s eye for action to the street-level Spidey story fans have been asking for is starting to sound like the right combination to make it happen.

    TBD 2026-Untitled Vision Series

Like Wonder Man, the Paul Bettany-led Vision series has been developed and produced mostly under the radar. Originally developed by Jac Schaeffer, the project landed in the hands of Terry Matalas and it sounds as though it may be at least partially set in cyberspace where all manner of AI madness could unfold.

It’s about intergenerational trauma…fathers and sons and denial of pain and denial of your own truth and coming to terms with who and what you are.

    -Paul Bettany

The series is bringing back Infinity Saga baddies Raza and Ultron and will almost certainly explore some aspects of Tony Stark’s legacy; however, as Vision attempts to rediscover who he is, he’ll also cross paths with his son, Tommy, whose soul now inhabits the body of a young man who was drowned by bullies. Though a first look at the series hasn’t been released yet, it’s shaping up to be a deep, heavy hitting part of the lineup.

    December 18, 2026-Avengers: Doomsday

In nearly two decades, Marvel Studios has never really dealt with what it is dealing with in Avengers: Doomsday. Despite bringing back its most successful directing duo and star, Marvel has been roundly criticized for nearly every choice it has made. Bringing back Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo brothers has been called desperation. Bringing in Fox’s original X-Men has been called fan service. And that may all turn out to be true but that doesn’t mean the film might not turn out to be alright.

Doctor Doom has officially arrived in the MCU. This villain, a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic, will unleash a cascading crisis across the entire multiverse.

    -First synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday

Believed to be inspired by Jonathan Hickman‘s work iconic Avengers and New Avengers runs, Avengers: Doomsday is rumored to see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes face off against the X-Men as their respective Earths are on course for an incursion. It will also feature the World of Wakanda and the TVA, allowing it to incorporate settings and characters from across the Multiverse Saga.

TBD 2027-Daredevil: Born Again Season 3

Recently renewed for a third season, Daredevil: Born Again remains, for the time being, Marvel Television’s flagship series. While it’s way too early to know much, rumors have begun to pop up that the third season may be a Defenders reunion with Elektra and Luke Cage among those believed to be joining the show. Filming on Season 3 will kick off next Spring in New York City.

    December 17, 2027-Avengers: Secret Wars

All bets are off when it comes to Avengers: Secret Wars. Anthony and Joe Russo returned to the studio to tell this story, so while Avengers: Doomsday has been a bit turbulent, it’s likely the duo have something special in store for the Multiverse Saga finale.

Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us. You couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, “Well, that’s a story we need to tell.”

    -Joe Russo

Production will commence next year, with the brothers working off a script from Stephen McFeely and, perhaps, Michael Waldron. It’s expected to be influenced by both the original 1984 comic book event and the 2015 version which, of course, heavily featured Doctor Doom.

  • Major ‘Daredevil’ Character Confirmed for Surprising Return in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

Major ‘Daredevil’ Character Confirmed for Surprising Return in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

As Daredevil: Born Again entered the back half of its first season, the goal of the series’ creative retooling under the purview of Dario Scardapane became clear: make it Netflix-ier. Sure, with Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Wilson Bethel, Jon Bernthal and Ayelet Zurer all taking on major roles AFTER the overhaul, the new direction should not have come as a surprise but beginning with Episode 6, “Excessive Force”, the series pivoted aggressively, starting down a far darker path. The series continued to creep along in that darkness through the Season 1 finale setting up whatcm already feels more like Daredevil Season 4 than Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.

With production on the series taking place largely in view of the New York City public, plenty of photos and videos from the set of the sophomore season of Daredevil: Born Again made their way online. While you can’t safely infer too much from set photos, it does seem as though the new season will indeed dwell in the darkness fans of the Netflix series loved and, perhaps, room for more of the Defenders-verse characters to join the MCU.

Krysten Ritter joined the cast of Season 2 and Luke Cage star Mike Colter all but confirmed he was set to return as Harlem’s Hero but a new report from a trusted insider claims they won’t be alone. According to Daniel Richtman, Elodie Yung, who played Elektra in Daredevil and The Defenders, will return to the role in Daredevil: Born Again.

I  have confirmed Elektra is coming back. Not sure if it’s for season 2 or 3.

    -Daniel Richtman

Richtman was unable to confirm whether Yung was among the many Defenders-verse era actors rumored to appear in Season 2 or set to appear in Defenders Season 2 Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, which films next Spring, though it’s worth pointing out both options are a possibility.

  • ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Rumor Puts [SPOILER] in The Punisher’s Crosshairs

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Rumor Puts [SPOILER] in The Punisher’s Crosshairs

Though it won’t include Kingpin, it is starting to sound as though Spider-Man: Brand New Day may indeed feature a “street-level civil war” as it has long-beem rumored to do. Marvel Studios Big Cheese Kevin Feige made it clear that the studio wanted Daredevil and Spidey to lead its street-level efforts and from what can be gleaned about the plot of the fourth installment in the franchise, that’s exactly what’s happening. And even if the two characters don’t seem destined to interact in the new film, there does seem to be some narrative crossover thanks to Jon Bernthal‘s Frank Castle taking on a major role.

We’ve got the supernatural angles, we’ve got the street-level with our announcement of Daredevil, and of course, Spidey going into the street-level heroes.

    -Kevin Feige, SDCC ’23

Though it’s only speculation for now, it tracks that the events of The Punisher Special Presentation and Spider-Man: Brand New Day will take place following the events of Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, the conclusion of which may have been spoiled through set photos which seem to indicate Daredevil and “his army” have taken Wilson Fisk off the board. If that’s true and the Kingpin is no longer running the show in NYC, plenty of other baddies, like Ma Gnucci, might start trying to get their piece, giving Castle plenty of purpose.

A Kingpin-sized power vacuum would also provide a reasonable explanation for why Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be chock-full of so many of Spidey’s sinister foes. And a new report from a trusted insider reveals that Castle will have a major beef with one of those street-level tough guys.

According to Daniel Richtman, “Punisher and Tombstone will be in direct conflict,” in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

After voicing the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Marvin Jones III is set to bring Alonzo “Lonnie” Lincoln to life in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and will certainly pose a challenge to Castle, who is also rumored to be trying to take out Michael Mando‘s Mac Gargan in the film. While there are still plenty of unknowns, it sounds as though director Destin Daniel Cretton and Spidey star Tom Holland are cooking up something special for fans.

  • Marvel Wraps ‘Avengers: Doomsday’; ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ On Deck

Marvel Wraps ‘Avengers: Doomsday’; ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ On Deck

After filming for roughly five-and-a-half months, principal photography on Avengers: Doomsday has wrapped, according to THR. The trade report confirms suspicions stemming from multiple social media posts from crew members but comes with one caveat: with 15 months until the film’s December 18, 2026 release date, the studio already has plans for “a healthy dose of additional photography down the road.”

With Avengers: Doomsday simmering until additional photography begins, directors Anthony and Joe Russo can begin to turn at least some of their collective attention to Avengers: Secret Wars, the capstone to the Multiverse Saga which will land in theaters on December 17, 2027.

Stephen McFeely is writing the script. We are right in the middle of the writing process. We’ve always worked very closely with Markus and McFeely through all the work that we’ve done together. It’s a little bit like getting back on a bike. We have a really codified process that we all work together through… It’s very complicated to iron out a story of this scale.

    -Joe Russo

It’ll be similar [to the process of filming Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame], but we’ll have a larger break in between the two movies than we did,” Joe Russo explained in October 2024. According to his brother, Anthony, that “break” will consist of “a year or so,” allowing the brothers time to do some post-production work on Doomsday while also preparing for Secret Wars, which will be written by Infinity War and Endgame co-writer Stephen McFeely.

Doctor Doom has officially arrived in the MCU. This villain, a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic, will unleash a cascading crisis across the entire multiverse.

    -First synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday

With production taking place largely at the UK’s Pinewood Studios, details about Avengers: Doomsday have proven tough to find, though a recent marketing expo did provide a first look at Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom and his comic-accurate power set. Outside of that, a cast reveal in March has been the only official word on the film, which looks to feature the OG Fox X-Men taking on the heroes of Earth-616 as an incursion threatens both their worlds.

  • Welcome Back, Frank! Photos Reveal Jon Bernthal’s Hard-Boiled Frank Castle on Set of ‘The Punisher’ Special Presentation

Welcome Back, Frank! Photos Reveal Jon Bernthal’s Hard-Boiled Frank Castle on Set of ‘The Punisher’ Special Presentation

In the finale of Daredevil: Born Again, after taking a beating at the hands of the Anti-Vigilante Task Force, Frank Castle is imprisoned in Wilson Fisk’s facility at the Red Hook free port, alongside other enemies of Fisk, including Tony Dalton‘s Jack Duquesne, aka The Swordsman. In a relatively ridiculous post-credits scene, Frank talks to a guard named Anthony Petruccio, who idolizes the Punisher. Frank uses his charisma to convince the guard to shake his hand. When the guard extends his arm through a small opening in the cage, Frank breaks his arm, snags his keys and makes his escape, setting the stage for Marvel Television’s 2026 The Punisher Special Presentation.

With principal photography on the Special Presentation, co-written by star Jon Bernthal and Reinaldo Marcus Green, now underway in New York, set photos have begun to circulate online. Earlier today, photos of an NYC storefront being remade into Gnucci’s Restaurant seemingly confirmed that mob boss Ma Gnucci will serve as the main antagonist of the project, backing Marvel insider Daniel Richtman’s claim about the feature’s big bad. Now, a new series of photos has provided a first look at Bernthal‘s Castle, who is once again sporting the “no, I’m not The Punisher” beard.

To check out the entire series of set photos, you’ll have to head over to Just Jared but from the looks of it, The Punisher Special Presentation is likely to begin with Frank on the down low, looking to avoid the kind of attention walking around with a giant skull painted on his chest might bring.

Marvel Studios has had very little to say about the new project, which is set to film for just a few weeks in New York. With that in mind, it’s unclear exactly what the timeline for it is, making it possible it takes place right after Frank escapes from Fisk’s dungeon or following the conclusion of Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, making it a bridge to Bernthal’s next MCU appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Either way, with the Special Presentation possibly adapting Garth Ennis‘ BRUTAL 12-issue “Welcome Back, Frank” arc, fans are likely in for some more of that dark, gritty and violent fare straight from the old Netflix days.

  • The Rumored Additions to the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Cast May Hint at Major Story Details for the 2026 Film

The Rumored Additions to the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Cast May Hint at Major Story Details for the 2026 Film

In late March, Marvel Studios captivated the world for hours by revealing part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday in an unannounced live stream across Twitter and YouTube. Shortly afterwards, the studio made it clear that more stars would join the impressive list of 27 talented actors and actreses, though they didn’t give any indication of when or just how many more there would be. And while we still don’t know what Marvel’s plans might be, a recent leak by a familiar insider may have let the cat(s) out of the bag.

Longtime Hollywood scooper and shortime Marvel shit lister, Jeff “The In” Sneider, recently rolled out a list of 33 stars that he was told would join the film, bringing the total number to an impressive 60. While even Sneider was a bit skeptical, if for the purposes of this exercise, we take the list at face value, it could shed some serious light on what to expect in Avengers: Doomsday.

Let’s break down what each of the 60 MCU stars might bring to the landscape of the 2026 team-up. The rumored new members of the cast are in green.

    The Villain

    Robert Downey Jr./Victor von Doom

In what will remain the studio’s most controversial casting decision ever until fans finally see Avengers: Doomsday, Kevin Feige and crew brought the actor behind the MCU’s greatest hero back to play on of the greatest villains ever created. Nobody will argue that Downey is one of the most versatile and talented actors working in Hollywood now but it’s still very much a concern for fans that he’s not right for the role of Doom and it’s just a nostalgia-driven marketing ploy.

    The Fantastic Four

(L-R): Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in 20th Century Studios/Marvel Studios’ THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS. Vanessa Kirby/Sue Storm

    Ebon Moss-Bachrach/Ben Grimm

    Pedro Pascal/Reed Richards

    Joseph Quinn/Johnny Storm

    The New Avengers

    David Harbour/Alexi Shostakov

    Hannah John-Kamen/Ava Starr

    Florence Pugh/Yelena Belova

    Lewis Pullman/Robert Reynolds

    Wyatt Russell/John F. Walker

    Sebastian Stan/Bucky Barnes

As revealed by director Jake Schreier, the Thunderbolts* extended post-credit scene was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and is indeed a scene from Avengers: Doomsday. That confirmation makes the exposition-heavy scene even more important, though we don’t know at what point in Doomsday it takes place. However, it does lay out that Yelena’s New Avengers are aware of a “space crisis” and will be the first heroes on Earth-616 to meet up with whichever members of the Fantastic Four are aboard the Excelsior.

    The TVA

    Sophia Di Martino/Sophie

    Tom Hiddleston/Loki

    Wunmi Mosaku/B-15

    Ke Huy Quan/Ouroboros

    Owen Wilson/Mobius

While it may have been mildly surprising to see Hiddleston’s name among those originally revealed, it’s no surprise at all that the Time Variance Authority, which first appeared in Loki, will have a role in Avengers: Doomsday. Before the studio pivoted from the original idea for the project, first known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the TVA likely would have played a more integral role in the film. Still, given Loki’s position as the God of Stories and the nature of the TVA, these characters and their stories still easily connect to a film about the collapse of the Multiverse…and Loki may just be set for another, other death.

    The Old Avengers

    Don Cheadle/James Rhodes

    Chris Hemsworth/Thor

    Samuel L. Jackson/Fury, Nicholas J.

    Brie Larson/Carol Danvers

    Chris Pratt/The Legendary Star-Lord

    Jeremy Renner/Clint Barton

    Paul Rudd/Scott Lang

    Mark Ruffalo/Bruce Banner

    Tessa Thompson/Valkyrie

    Benedict Wong/Wong

Even as new teams form in their absence, there’s no possibility that the surviving members of the Avengers who defeated Thanos would stay on the sidelines while their reality falls apart. Certainly, some of these heroes my join up with either Sam or Yelena’s team, but it’s also starting to look like there will be plenty to do for all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. At this point, it seems like Avengers: Doomsday will likely mark the end of the road for a few Marvel lifers.

    Champions

    Xochitl Gomez/America Chavez

    Kathryn Newton/Cassie Lang

    Hailee Steinfeld/Kate Bishop

    Dominique Thorne/Riri Williams

    Iman Vellani/Kamala Khan

Concept art revealed that this group of young heroes was set to assemble in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty; however, when the original idea was scrapped in favor of whatever it is that Avengers: Doomsday is all about, it wasn’t clear how many, if any, of these characters would still show up. Interestingly, this lineup matches nicely with insider Daniel Richtman’s January 2025 report that indicated the studio had locked in its roster of Champions…with one notable exception: Joe Locke was not among those listed by “The In” Sneider.

    The Wakandans + 1

    Winston Duke/M’Baku

    Danai Gurira/Okoye

    Tenoch Huerta Mejia/Namor

    Letitia Wright/Shuri

With Wakanda likely still recovering from the Talokanil-Wakandan War, it’ll will be very interesting to see what Anthony and Joe Russo have in mind for the country. With M’Baku currently sitting the throne as the King of Wakanda, Okoye working as a Midnight Angel, Shuri out of the country and Namor pledged to aid them, the Wakandans have some things to sort out before they are ready to help save the world once more.

    Sam Wilson’s ©️ Avengers

    Simu Liu/Shang-Chi

    Anthony Mackie/Sam Wilson

    Tatiana Maslany/Jennifer Walters

    Danny Ramirez/Joaquin Torres

    Yahya Abdul Mateen II/Simon Williams

Outside of Torres’ inclusion on the team, this roster is nothing but guesswork and could be composed of all of these heroes listed above, none of them or some of them and few from the OG Avengers. All we do know is that Sam is putting his own team of Avengers together quite separate from the Thunderbolts/New AvengerZ and that not everyone is going to be able to stick around on Earth to defend the planet.

    “Binary Universe” X-Men

    Halle Berry/Storm

    Alan Cumming/Nightcrawler

    Kelsey Grammer/Beast

    Famke Janssen/Jean Grey

    Lashana Lynch/Binary

    James Marsden/Cyclops

    Ian McKellen/Magneto

    Rebecca Romijn/Mystique

    Patrick Stewart/Charles Xavier

    The MacGuffin

    Teyonah Paris/Monica Rambeau

Seemingly made possible by the divergent timeline created in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the original Fox X-Men trilogy stars will reunite in Avengers: Doomsday. It seems likely, though far from certain, that their universe is the one in which Teyonah Parris‘ Monica Rambeau became stranded in during the final act of The Marvels which means she should be playing a central role in the film. Carol Danvers will certainly be trying to bring her home and the X-Men will likely learn the consequences of prolonged Multiversal travel. Will the result be Avengers vs. X-Men? Or will Doom best everyone to it and expedite the end of the Fox universe?

    Incursion Experts

    Benedict Cumberbatch/Doctor Strange

    Charlize Theron/Clea

If both these characters are indeed in the film, it stands to reason that they’ll be the walking, talking expository devices of the film, explaining Incursions to the audience and Avengers alike. When last seen, the pair we’re headed out to “fix” one of the Incursions caused by Strange’s Multiversal adventure. Can Incursions be fixed? Will the Dark Dimension, where Clea is from, be a key setting in the film, allowing teams and individuals to travel inter-dimensionally?

The New Guardians of the Galaxy

    Maria Bakalova/Cosmo

    Bradley Cooper/Rocket

    Vin Diesel/Groot

    Karen Gillan/Nebula

    Will Poulter/Adam Warlock

    Kai Zen/Phyla

A relatively surprising choice to be part of Avengers: Doomsday, it seems as though the New Guardians May find themselves working with Captain Marvel and crew to solve their part of the “space crisis.” But where is Sean Gunn‘s Kraglin and why do the Russos hate him?

    The Wild Cards

    Hayley Atwell

    Chris Evans

    Channing Tatum/Gambit

Evans has been rumored and reported to be part of Avengers: Doomsday before the project has a title. Will he be Nomad? Will he be the original Steve Rogers, whose decision to travel to and remain in the past with Peggy Carter will lead to an Incursion? Will he be Hydra Cap? Will he be all of the above?

Like Evans, Atwell was reported to have joined the cast in December 2024 but was absent from the first round of reveals by Marvel. And also like Evans, Atwell could be playing regular old Peggy, Captain Carter or another Variant we haven’t met yet.

Tatum‘s card-throwing Gambit presents an entirely different type of X-factor than either Atwell or Evans. As seen in Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum’s Le Diable Blanc doesn’t know what universe he used to call home, positing at one point that perhaps he was even born in the Void at the End of Time. With that in mind, perhaps he has a much larger and surprising role to play in Avengers: Doomsday than you might expect…or perhaps he’s just there because he made a name for himself as Gambit after waiting so long to bring the character to life.

With such a large cast and so many others left out entirely, it seems highly unlikely that all 60 of these folks will make it to Avengers: Secret Wars and the end of the Multiverse Saga. With Marvel’s own X-Men set to take center stage for the next decade, fans should start preparing to say goodbye to some old favorites.

The Scoop on Each of Sony’s Unmade Spider-Man Universe Films

Despite its worst efforts to entertain audiences with Spider-Man-less Spider-Man movies, Sony finally threw in the damn towel following the dismal response to Kraven the Hunter. It’s an impressive decision for Sony, especially since its CEO, Tony Vinciquerra, delusionally maintains that the films, many of which are widely accepted as some of the worst comic book movies ever made, aren’t bad…

Having learned the wrong lesson from the box office success of Venom in 2018, the studio believed they had found the formula to the Super-Solider Serum when, in fact, they had actually cooked up something more akin to the Goblin Serum. And so, they began a descent into madness that even Norman Osborn couldn’t match, mining their stable of Spidey-adjacent characters in search of diamonds in the rough…and we all know how it turned out.

Incredibly, for every Morbius or Madame Web that did get made, another project of equal or lesser interest rotted in development hell.  While the premises some of Sony’s unmade projects sounds reasonable enough, there’s no telling how ghastly they might have ended up. As the calendar turns to a new year free of Sony’s sinful Spidey spinoffs, here’s a look at what might have been, but thankfully was not.

    Sinister Six

One of the films originally planned to help Sony launch its Spidey villain-verse in 2013, The Sinister Six was meant to join Venom as a foundational piece. Sony tasked Drew Goddard with writing the script planned for him to direct the film.

Though work on the project began before Sony abandoned Andrew Garfield‘s Amazing Spider-Man franchise, The Sinister Six continued to be developed over the next several years before being forsaken, though its premise certainly changed once Sony pulled the plug on Garfield’s Spidey. Of all the ideas generated by Sony, thanks to the collaborative relationship with Marvel Studios, this one may still live on in some way despite the studio taking a break from Spidey-related movies.

    Nightwatch

In 2017, Sony had plans to develop a film around the little-used Marvel Comics’ villain Dr. Kevin Trench, who turned over a new leaf and became the hero known as Nightwatch.

As first revealed by me in March 2018 while working at That Hashtag Show, Sony had secured a monster creative team for Nightwatch with Cheo Hodari Coker (Luke Cage) writing a script to be directed by Spike Lee. Lee departed the project before the end of the year and Nightwatch never made it to the screen.

    Silver and Black

Of all of Sony’s unrealized projects, Silver and Black probably came the closest to being made. Development on a Black Cat solo film ultimately evolved into a film intended to see Felicia Hardy and Silvija Sablinova share the screen in what would have been a pretty wild adventure, full of twists, turns, betrayals and quite a few big name Spidey villains and even a few heroes. You can take a deep dive into what the 2018 version of the film might have been had Sony not abandoned it in 2020.

    Jackpot

Following the box office success of Venom in 2018, Sony began developing scripts for several films, including Jackpot. In 2020, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow writer Marc Guggenheim, who wrote three issues of Amazing Spider-Man Presents: Jackpot in 2010, was revealed to have been working on the script for two years.

If Sony’s plans to bring a Jackpot solo film to the screen has been an effort to put Mary Jane Watson in the spotlight, they may have been, at the very least, commendable. However, MJ didn’t suit up as Jackpot until 2023 and Sony’s film may have been shelved by then. Instead, Guggenheim‘s  screenplay featured one of the other iterations of the character: Sara Ehret (11 comic book appearances) or Alana Jobson (12 comic book appearances). Given that Guggenheim’s Marvel Comics series involved both characters, it’s possible that the film may have followed suit.

    Silk

Like Jackpot, development on a Silk solo film began in 2018 following the success of Tom Hardy‘s Venom. By the following year, the project was shifted to streaming with Christopher Miller and Phil Lord overseeing its development. In late 2022, Silk: Spider Society was set to go into production; however, Amazon eventually pulled the plug. As of mid-2024, Amazon was reportedly looking to sell the series to another streaming service.

    Spider-Woman

So little was ever officially revealed about Sony’s Spider-Woman project that it was widely believed to be another name for Madame Web. While the latter somehow made its way to the big screen, the former–which could not have been any worse than Madame Web–never did.

In February 2020, just after the COVID-19 pandemic stopped Hollywood in its tracks, Sony began searching for a director for a Jessica Drew-led Spider-Woman film. At the time, the studio was hoping to have Spider-Woman in theaters on October 7, 2021 and by late summer 2020, had locked Olivia Wilde in as director. According to comments by Wilde, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios may have been working closely with Sony on Spider-Woman despite being hands off on the studio’s other Spidey-adjacent fare. But why?

The live-action rights to Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman fall under a very unusual agreement between Marvel and Sony. According to the agreement, Marvel Studios can use Jessica Drew freely with one caveat: without the approval of Sony, they cannot refer to her as Spider-Woman. That doesn’t mean there aren’t great Jessica Drew stories to tell, only that it’s almost certainly in the best interests of both studios to collaborate on a Drew project in a way similar to how they’ve worked together on Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

However, whether or not Marvel and Sony had struck another deal, we may never know. In August 2022, Wilde still seemed to be attached to the project, keeping whatever plans were still intact at the time to herself during interviews. In May 2023, classic Spidey villain Avi Arad promised that the Spider-Woman film would be in theaters “sooner than you expect,” which was weird because it was expected to be in theaters two years prior to his statement.

And then…the trail went cold. It seems all parties have moved on and unless Marvel Studios has plans for Drew, the character may never make it to the big screen.

    Hypno-Hustler

Inspired, undoubtedly, by a March 2022 tweet by me, Sony greenlit a Hypno-Hustler movie in December 2022.

With Donald Glover developing the project and set to star as the titular Hypno-Huslter, this project at least had a chance to be entertaining. Working off a script from Myles Murphy, Hypno-Hustler would have allowed Glover/Childish Gambino to showcase his musical talents as Antoine Delsoin; however, the film was quietly added to the scrap heap. Rumors at the time suggested that Sony preferred to see Glover ultimately suit up again as Aaron Davis/The Prowler who he first portrayed in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

    El Muerto

Announced at CinemaCon 2022 and scheduled for a January 12, 2024 release, El Muerto was a vehicle for musician Bad Bunny; however, that vehicle came out of the shop with a few bad tires and was canned when its engine fell out.

Arguably the most bizarre of Sony’s decisions to build a Spider-Man universe without a Spider-Man, El Muerto would have featured Bad Bunny as the in-famous Juan-Carlos Sánchez who, as you undoubtedly know, was a Mexican legacy luchador who wore an enchanted mask which bestowed him with superhuman powers. At the time of the film’s announcement, El Muerto had two full-fledged appearances in the pages of Marvel Comics.

Perhaps the only interesting tidbit to have emerged about what El Muerto may have been came in 2023 when it was revealed that Sony planned to use classic Spidey baddie Tombstone in the film. According to a trade report, Sony planned to have Marvin Jones III, who voiced the character in the animated Spider-Man; Into the Spider-Verse, bring Tombstone to life in El Muerto. WWE superstar Sasha Banks was also reportedly set to play an unknown role in the film. Alas, El Muerto is deceased, if it ever lived at all.
