  • RUMOR: ‘The Flash’s Villain Might Be an Evil Barry Allen

RUMOR: ‘The Flash’s Villain Might Be an Evil Barry Allen

It looks like we might’ve gotten some more insight into the mysterious multiversal plot surrounding The Flash. Not so long ago, we saw set photos featuring a stand-in for Ezra Miller next to the actor himself. It implied we’ll meet multiple versions of Barry Allen. It seems there’s more to this than we thought, as The Direct has shared some insight into the main villain of the film, an evil version of Barry.

They claim that the story will take inspiration from Flashpoint, but a doppelganger will take the place of Reverse-Flash.  So, it will remain that the Flash will go up against another speedster, but it’ll end up being a displaced Barry Allen. It’s uncertain if it might also echo the CW show’s this, where an alternative version of Barry turned out to be the villain Savitar. It’s not stated that they’d take inspiration from this version of the character, or it’s simply an evil Flash.

It’s a popular storyline in the comics as well, as Wally West faced an evil version of himself known as Walter West or the Dark Flash. He might be the cause for the multiversal rift or a showcase of what would happen if the character ends up down a darker path. The concept isn’t too bad, but it’s strange they’d replace such an iconic villain. There’s a chance they don’t want to introduce this new villain and somehow fit him into the story while exploring the multiverse. We’ll see if further details are teased as the film continues production.

  • ‘Cobra Kai’ Star Xolo Mariduena in Talks to Lead DC’s ‘Blue Beetle’

‘Cobra Kai’ Star Xolo Mariduena in Talks to Lead DC’s ‘Blue Beetle’

Streaming services have begun a whole new playing field when it comes to expanding your cinematic universe. Marvel and DC are both capitalizing on the straight-to-consumer system to build these worlds. In the case of DC, HBO Max has become the streaming home for the DCEU with projects like Peacemaker, Batgirl, Static Shock, and Blue Beetle in the works. We recently got the news that actress Leslie Grace is set to star as Barbra Gordon in her own solo, and now it looks like we’ve got our Blue Beetle.

Star of Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Xolo Mariduena, is reportedly in talks to star Jaime Reyes, the third incarnation of the Blue Beetle and will lead his own solo film. The project is set to be directed by Angel Manuel Soto and was written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The project is set to begin production early next year, with John Rickard serving as producer and Zev Foreman as executive producer.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Jaime Reyes follows in the footsteps of Ted Kord, who picked up the mantle of Blue Beetle from Dan Garret. Jaime is different from his predecessors in that the Scarab attached to his back, a piece of tech from an alien species known as the Teach. It allows Jaime to don a suit of armor, and become the Blue Beetle. The character is yet another one from Charlton comics, a group that DC and WB seem keen on adapting lately, with Peacemaker also coming to HBO Max. While it isn’t confirmed, we could see seeds planted and or maybe even Kord show up before Jaimes big debut.

  • Paramount’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Film Adds ‘SNL’s Colin and Casey Jost as Writers

Paramount’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Film Adds ‘SNL’s Colin and Casey Jost as Writers

It looks like the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film has found its writers, as Deadline just shared that Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost and his brother Casey will tackle the project.  This project is separate from Seth Rogen’s new animated TV series, as it’ll be produced by Michael Bay, Andrew Form, Brad Fuller, Scott Mednick, and Galen Walker. Plot details remain under wraps, but it’ll feature the popular brothers of pizza-eating mutated turtles.

There’s no word if this will be a live-action adaptation of the popular franchise, or if they will tackle an animated adaptation once more. We do know that Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures’ will adapt the turtles with a full-fledged CG reboot. Gravity Falls director Jeff Rowe is attached to the project, with Brendan O’Brien working on the screenplay. The last we heard of the project was around four months ago when Illuminerdi released character descriptions.

What is curious about this movie is not only that nickelodeon and Paramount are fast-tracking the project, it’s also Jost’s first major franchise. He did write Worst Man for Universal and starred in Tom & Jerry, but he is slated to return for the next SNL season. The IP is a high priority, and it seems that their pitch for the film might’ve convinced them to tackle it on the silver screen once more.

TMNT is a fascinating franchise that seems to get rebooted quite frequently by Nickelodeon. We’ve seen many iterations across the years that add a unique spin to the classic four turtles.

  • Set Photo Offers First Look at Ezra Millers ‘The Flash’ Suit

Set Photo Offers First Look at Ezra Millers ‘The Flash’ Suit

Production on the upcoming Flash film has been quite busy recently. They took to the streets of Glasgow for a high-speed chase between Ben Affleck’s Batman and a mystery Humvee. While there seems to be no sign of the Flash anywhere that doesn’t mean he isn’t around. A photo leaked from the set of the DC film looks to have given us our very first look at the scarlet speedster in his new outfit, a much smoother and vibrant red suit featuring the classic gold accents and of course, the wings.

A new set photo from Twitter user crypt0dad looks to have given us the first look at a suit that looks to be quite the vast departure from Barry’s first suit, which was seen in both cuts of Justice League. What was once a armored suit made from rocket metal and held together with wires looks to have been turned into a much more streamlined look and features golden boots. Of course he has the classic wings on his helmet. Surrounded by quite the green screen, context on the scene remains absent. The tweet in question includes some might interesting details on who may be with Barry.

The user explains that while he was working on the film with the titular hero, he wasn’t the only one. The user mentions that Batman and Superman were on set with him at the same time. However it remains unclear which Batman it was whether it be Keaton or Affleck. The “Superman” could’ve been Sasha Calle‘s Supergirl, but would be odd to not call her by her name. While we’ve yet to see a full official look at Barry’s new out, this should give you a much better idea of what to expect, since it isn’t the best photo.

  • What I Heard This Week: Namora and ‘BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER’

What I Heard This Week: Namora and ‘BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER’

Every now and then I come across some information the veracity of which can be confirmed by a second source. What happens FAR more often is that I come across some information that while believable and from trustworthy sources, cannot be confirmed by other sources for various reasons. Typically, when the second scenario occurs, I move on and forget about the information unless, in rare instances, it turns out to be proven true somewhere down the road. With that in mind, understand that this piece of news is NOT confirmed by Disney, Marvel or any other source and, for now, should fall under the category of rumor until further confirmation comes through.

10 Amazing Characters Marvel Studios Still Can't Use - The Geek Twins

We’ve known for a while now that Marvel Studios was looking to cast two major, supporting characters in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The Illuminerdi were first to report that the casting calls for two Mayan warriors, codenamed Zyanya and Cadmael, were for the roles of Namora and Attuma, two major Atlantean characters from the comics set to join Tenoch Huerta’s Namor in the 2022 sequel. Now, we may be able to associate a name with one of those roles. I heard this week that actress Mabel Cadena has joined the cast as Namora, the cousin of Namor and one of the original members of the Agents of Atlas!

    Mabel Cadena

The 30-year old Mexican actress checks all the boxes for the role of Namora. Marvel Studios was looking for an Hispanic or Latino actress, 20-40, with previous experience in physical roles. Cadena, who recently starred in Dance of the 41 (now available on Netflix) and Hernan (now available on Amazon Prime), has been in the Atlanta area and been hitting the gym to prep for the role.

Huerta also recently began interacting with Cadena on Instagram, which may add a little more fuel to the rumor mill fires, if you’re into that sort of thing. Again, at this point there is no confirmation from any official source, so this should be treated as a rumor; however, a lot of supporting evidence does exist.

Kevin Feige Shares How ‘Black Panther’s Reception Fast-Tracked ‘Shang-Chi’

Marvel Studios is back in theaters with their next major project heading our way this September. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will explore a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. Not only will it finally unveil the true Ten Rings organization teased since 2008’s Iron Man, but we’ll also get to explore a new cornerstone of cinematic representation, an Asian-American-led superhero film. In an interview with Empire, Kevin Feige revealed that he’s been on their list of potential cinematic heroes, but it was Black Panther’s success and social relevance that drove them to fast-track the project to ensure that everyone can see themselves on the silver screen.

I remember seeing a viral video when the Black Panther poster first came out. It was some young men in a movie theatre overwhelmed with excitement at seeing the poster, and it was moving because people were excited about the movie we were making. But it was also a harsh realisation that they were reacting that way because they had not seen it before. So Panther really coalesced the notion of, ‘Everybody deserves to see themselves portrayed in these larger-than-life ways.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings – exclusive

While part of the film will explore the Ten Rings and Shang-Chi’s heritage, there’s a strong emphasis on his time living in the United States. It allows them to bring that very story to life and explore what it means to live as an Asian-American in the country. Black Panther was the first sign of the importance that cinema gives everyone a chance to see themselves on the silver screen, or even as a hero. Hopefully, it’s also just the beginning of exploring the diverse corners of the MCU.

  • ‘Jungle Cruise’ Nabs Decent $34M in Domestic Box Office and Another $30M on Disney+ Premier Access

‘Jungle Cruise’ Nabs Decent $34M in Domestic Box Office and Another $30M on Disney+ Premier Access

It looks like the Box Office still requires more time to heal after all.  As the Delta variant rages across the world, the latest Disney movie entered cinemas with a decent $34.2M opening. As Forbes points out, it’s in line with Dwayne Johnson’s most non-Fast and Furious films. In a way, it’s on par with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. In addition, Disney also released their income through Disney+ Premier Access, as they gained an additional $30M.

The film did manage to pass Space Jam: A New Legacy‘s $31M, but it can only hope for a leggier post-launch to ensure it makes back its expensive $200M budget. Overall, the trend continues as the film’s second weekend sees a sharp decline. Last week’s Old dropped by around 70%, while Snake Eyes plummeted by 79%. In a way, we should continue to expect these kinds of drops in future releases.

Black Widow earned another $5.8M, with only $2M keeping it from surpassing F9’s domestic total. As such, it seems likely it’ll hold the title as a domestic top performer for some time. It may remain Marvel Studios’ third worst-performing film due to the current situation, but it still is showing some legs. Of course, the lawsuit surrounding Scarlett Johansson adds some questions on how to perceive its “success.”

Jungle Cruise’s advantage moving forward is it doesn’t have any direct competitors. So, there’s a chance it could leg out like Black Widow is currently. The curious aspect about the Box Office development is that it still seems the overall trends between films are on par with pre-pandemic numbers. Disney releasing their Disney+ numbers only for the opening weekend is curious and opens up a question regarding transparency. We never heard how much about Raya and the Last Dragon, Mulan, or even Cruella‘s numbers. Moving forward, transparency from streamers will be a big question mark.

  • Taika Waititi’s ‘Flash Gordon’ No Longer an Animated Film

Taika Waititi’s ‘Flash Gordon’ No Longer an Animated Film

It looks like Taika Waititi isn’t done with wacky space adventures, as his Flash Gordon project will no longer be animated, but rather a live-action film. In an interview with producer John Davis, Collider has learned that the project, which initially got revealed two years ago, will switch gears. He revealed that the decision came while preparing the script that it might work better in live-action.

Taika is writing it. It was a movie that was a huge influence on him growing up. It is one of his favorite movies. He initially said to me, ‘Let’s do it animated.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ Then we got into it and started developing it and he said, ‘No, let’s do it live-action.’ I said, ‘Even better.’

In the interview, he also hinted at how Waititi’s vision might be closer to the original 1930s comic series rather than the 1980 space opera film starring Sam J. Jones.

He has the most fantastically interesting vision for this movie. And you can only know it is Taika. It is what he does. It is the way he looks at the world. He is the greatest guy in the world. He is the funniest guy in the world. And he thinks on a different plane. And this movie embraces everything that’s special about Taika, and his vision. It harkens in a very interesting way to the original conception from the comics.

Technically, the director already gave people a glimpse of what his take on the franchise would be through his Thor films. Ragnarok, in particular, seems to take some inspiration from the space opera, with the sequel potentially dipping its toes even more into this era. We’ll see what the future holds, but the move to a live-action adaptation is certainly interesting and has a lot to live up to for long-time fans of the cult classic film.

  • Jake Johnson Confirms Return For ‘INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2’

Jake Johnson Confirms Return For ‘INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2’

It seems the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be getting one of it’s biggest stars back. During a recent video interview with The Movie Dweeb, actor Jake Johnson confirmed that he is currently working on a deal to return for the highly anticipated sequel. After spending much of the interview discussing his newest release, Ride the Eagle, the New Girl breakout revealed his immense excitement to continue voicing Peter B. Parker. Johnson noted the open-ended nature of his character’s ending in the first film, and stated he couldn’t wait to see where the writers take his version of Spider-Man from there.

The Spider-Verse sequel is set to be directed by the trio of Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson. They will create the film from a script by David Callaham, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller. While the news of Johnson’s return feels obvious, it wasn’t previously confirmed he would be back alongside fellow leads Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld, as well as franchise newcomer Issa Rae, who will bring the character of Jessica Drew to life. Despite the comedian’s claims of an “open-ended” finale for Peter B. Parker, it did feel like the character’s story had gone full circle by the time the credits rolled. It’s good to know this particular Peter Parker variant, known for his big tummy and bigger personality, will be back to help save the day again next year. The tentatively-titled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 will drop in theaters on October 7, 2022.
