  • ‘One Piece’s Original Japanese Voice Cast to Dub Netflix’s Live-Action Version

‘One Piece’s Original Japanese Voice Cast to Dub Netflix’s Live-Action Version

Here’s a rather great surprise, it looks like the original voice cast of the Japanese One Piece series will return for the live-action adaptation heading to Netflix later in August. In a cute video revealed during this year’s Anime Expo, Inaki Godoy met with the original Monkey D. Luffy voice actress, who has been playing the character since 1999, Mayumi Tanaka. In a way, it also acts as a “passing of the torch“, as she also praises Godoy for his work as the character.

Of course, while the rest of the voice cast did not appear in the video, they have confirmed that everyone is set to reprise their iconic roles in the adaptation. Godoy and Taz Skylar also confirmed that they will be reprising their roles in the Spanish dubs as well, which is a great touch given their own cultural background and just adds a little fun. Funny enough, the German voice cast of the anime has also been teased as part of the live-action adaptation.

What a great little surprise to come out of Anime Expo, plus we also had the cast of the live-action One Piece together once more. Cowboy Bebop’s live-action adaptation also featured the original cast but it didn’t have this much of a push besides a short confirmation on Social Media. Netflix seemingly knows what this show is all about and is using the dynamic of this cast, and now having the voice since 1999 of the iconic lead passing on a straw hat. Hard to deny, there’s a lot of hope to see this show succeed.

  • First Look at Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Merchandise for Luffy and Zoro

First Look at Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Merchandise for Luffy and Zoro

Just a few days ago, there was the announcement that S.H.Figuarts would be doing a collaboration with Netflix for the upcoming live-action One Piece series. It’s certainly a step further for them actually pushing merchandise before the series released, as Cowboy Bebop was more of a wait-and-see approach before it got rushed out. Luckily, they hinted that we’ll likely get our first look during the Anime Expo 2023 and the first images have already found their way online.

YouTuber @DesnesCitrus shared an image, which initially came from Kaboom Kollectibles, from the Anime Expo that unveils a first look at two figurines from this new series line. We get a good look at Mackenyu Arata’s take on Roronoa Zoro and Inaki Godoy’s Monkey D. Luffy. While we don’t know if all the main Straw Hat members are getting their own figurines, it does seem fitting given the big push of the cast as the live-action series’ big selling point.

The figurines look great and are quite detailed. It’s still crazy to think that Netflix is already going all-in to bank off of this series. One Piece is a franchise that managed to even outsell Batman’s entire lifetime comic sales and likely has a chance to surpass Superman by the time it eventually ends in the coming years. So, it has quite a massive audience built-in and if they manage to draw in a strong audience for the live-action series, they might be able to also build a strong base for additional sales.

This is a way how Marvel Studios’ various projects are far more than just their box office revenue. If people buy merchandise, they end up generating additional revenue with Intellectual Property that also gives them a reason to keep it around longer. So, we’ll see if this strategy might end up reflecting what Netflix saw with Squid Game and Stranger Things, which could carry this series for many years to come.

  • Emily Rudd Shares How She Got Into ‘One Piece’

Emily Rudd Shares How She Got Into ‘One Piece’

Netflix just recently unveiled the first teaser trailer for One Piece, which is their next major release besides the return of The Witcher. With 3 Body Problem and Avatar: The Last Airbender postponed until 2024, it’s their last major push for the year. And, they went all out during TUDUM where Decider’s Raven Brunner got a chance to interview the actress Emily Rudd, who plays Nami in the series.

She got the chance to sit down and talk to the actress about the dream opportunity of playing an iconic character like Nami. In the interview, she shared how she ended up meeting showrunner Matt Owens and how he was a big part of her getting into the series. also, he seemingly set his mind on getting One Piece to Netflix when he pitched it for her to check out.

I’ve always known about One Piece – it’s a massive IP – but I didn’t start watching [the show] until I met our showrunner, Matt Owens, who has been my best friend for the last six years. We are with the same agency and they said, “Hey, you’re both nerds – go have coffee, chat it out.” And we did. He was like, “Yeah, I think I’m going to bring One Piece to Netflix. You should watch it if you haven’t.” And I was like “Okay, yeah, I’ll dive into 1000 plus episodes.” But I did.

    Emily Rudd

She goes on to highlight that she hasn’t quite caught up with the anime, she definitely read all the manga. Rudd also highlighted how different it is for her reading the iconic journey of the Straw Hats compared to the anime.

Well, I read all the manga. I’m still working on the anime. There’s something about reading where I feel like the information is going into my brain in a very healthy way, and then with the anime, I was getting distracted.

    Emily Rudd

The big selling point of this show is the way the cast interact with each other. Many of the cast members seem to just be the characters they will portray in the live-action sequence. Rudd highlights that they spent a lot of time together, but highlights she was with Inaki Godoy quite a bit due to seeing him like a little brother.

We all kind of spent time with each other equally, but I spent a lot of time with Iñaki [Godoy] and we definitely developed this older-sister-younger-brother dynamic. He’s 19 and I am not, so I felt a little protective of him. But, also he’s so energetic, so playful — it’s infectious. We created silly little bits that we just milked to death.

    Emily Rudd

It definitely sounds like they had a lot of fun behind the scenes. Going by a lot of the promotional material so far, the group’s dynamic is quite infectious. One can see that Netflix also saw the potential and is definitely not holding back with promoting the show with videos of them just hanging out. Here’s hoping the wait for the next trailer isn’t too far off so we can get a good look at how they are together on screen.

  • Netflix Unveils ‘One Piece’ Collaboration with S.H.Figuarts

Netflix Unveils ‘One Piece’ Collaboration with S.H.Figuarts

Early on during the production of the live-action One Piece series, Netflix hinted that they want it to become their next major Stranger Things. Of course, they hope the show becomes a major player on the app that makes good use of the original stories’ many years worth of story to tell, they also had a different hope which is seemingly coming true.

Tamashii Nations’ action figure brand S.H.Figuarts has unveiled that they are working on a collaboration with the live-action One Piece series. That means we’re getting some high-quality figurines based on the iconic take of these live-action takes. The timing is also perfect, as they also revealed our first look will be available at the upcoming Anime Expo 2023 this weekend.

This collaboration is likely just the first, as YouTooz who already hinted at a figurine based on Inaki Godoy’s Monkey D. Luffy. So, we might expect an announcement soon or perhaps they are still trying to build up the reveal ahead of the weekend. Who knows if this also expands to potential figurines based on the iconic ships or various landmarks from the live-action take. Netflix is certainly all-in for this project to work.

As mentioned previously, One Piece wants it to be the next Stranger Things and that means they want it to sell merchandise. A lot of major projects don’t just live off of their viewership, similar to how Squid Game became a massive success with the various merch even though it has only released a single season so far. If there is any project that has the potential, it definitely is One Piece.

  • New ‘One Piece’ Website Teases Netflix’s Take on the Marines

New ‘One Piece’ Website Teases Netflix’s Take on the Marines

Netflix has been heavily promoting the upcoming live-action One Piece series. They invested a lot and are not holding back on promoting it, which gave us some posters early in the year leading up to a trailer reveal during TUDUM. Shortly after the event, with a release in late August on the horizon, we got a new special website for those wanting to join the live-action Straw Hats on Netflix. The biggest addition is that it also includes some rather curious teases for the series.

The website strawhatgrandfleet.com gives you a chance to sign up and become a “Nakama” of the Straw Hat’s Grand Fleet (a great reference to the manga). In the background, you can see various posters that are likely part of the show with a showcase of some curious references. ‘s backgrounds. They paint a good picture of how this pirate-infested world is living and that perhaps the Marines aren’t as much of our friends as one thinks.

The biggest tease is that the “World Government” is included by name with a Big Brother poster. Those eyes even include little swirls that might be a reference to a recent reveal. They are warning many pirates throughout while also highlighting “Absolute Justice,” which is an iconic tagline of a major character we don’t meet until much later in the storyline. It looks like we’ll see a lot of propaganda throughout the series which also feels like a fitting way to adapt the Marines in a Western live-action adaptation that has similar experiences with police.

The best little inclusion is the Tangerine Juice poster that has the name of Belle-Mère, who is an important character for Nami. If you look closely, there are also some Wanted posters for unknown characters. Though, the posters are quite close to the ones we see in the manga, which is a great little touch. You can even see the Berry symbol in the left bottom corner. Here’s hoping we have more to see in the coming weeks.

  • ‘One Piece’ Adds Revolutionary Character to Cast

‘One Piece’ Adds Revolutionary Character to Cast

Even though we’re finally nearing the release of Netflix’s live-action One Piece in late August, it seems that one more cast member has potentially been uncovered. There are still quite a few major characters that have yet to be cast, but we also don’t know how far the story will go throughout the East Blue, as many are theorizing if we’ll even see Loguetown in the first season. This new casting, as first shared by @OP_Netflix_Fan, may have added some more confusion.

Dean Damonse has seemingly revealed that he is playing a character by the name of Dragon in Project Panda a.k.a. One Piece. There has been a rumored casting some time ago due to an IMDb listing,b ut those are generally easy to edit by anyone that makes an account. So, we were left wondering if we’d actually see the iconic leader of the Revolutionary Army in the series.

The casting has garnered some concerns over the actor’s age and if he would match the character. He also had only minor roles up to this point, which makes many wonder why they’d cast the actor in such a pivotal role. Of course, there might be a reason for that due to how he auditioned, but there’s also another factor to take into account: Dragon appears very briefly and disappears for quite some time.

They might have just decided to have someone act as a stand-in that they can easily recast later down the line. With the character not having a prominent role up to the time skip, it’s not a surprise they wouldn’t want to fly in a big name. Even in his first appearance, you can only briefly make out his face after a short speech. Plus, the actor is quite young and could be used in a flashback instead with minimal lines. So, we’ll have to wait and see if he actually appears in a big capacity in the project.

  • Den Den Murphy 30 – Live Action ‘One Piece’ Trailer Reaction

Den Den Murphy 30 – Live Action ‘One Piece’ Trailer Reaction

The time has finally come, Suki and Joe can finally react to the live-action One Piece trailer. It arrived during TUDUM and they used the opportunity to live-stream it on Suki’s Twitch account.

  • ‘One Piece’ Episode Titles Potentially Revealed

‘One Piece’ Episode Titles Potentially Revealed

At TUDUM, we finally got our first look at the official One Piece live-action adaptation from Netflix. Showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda have been busy at work on this project for many years, and are currently continuing an important fight to ensure the safety of their industry. In the meantime, the cast gets to promote the new season and it looks like right after the trailer dropped, the WGA has updated its database.

As first noticed by @OP_Netflix_Fan and the OPLA discord, WGA database has seemingly listed the episode titles for the upcoming One Piece series. While the directory for the actual show hasn’t listed them, the titles seem fitting for the show. There’s a chance these aren’t the final titles, but they are definitely interesting.

Here are the titles of the eight episodes in no specific order as it is provided by the WGA currently:

    • Eat at Baratie!
    • Romance Dawn
    • Tell No Tales
    • The Chief and the Chore Boy
    • The Girl with the Sawfish Tattoo
    • The Man in the Straw Hat
    • The Pirates are Coming
    • Worst in the East

So, we can definitely connect some of these episodes. “Romance Dawn” is oddly spelled “Down” but we know that is the pilot episode’s name. “The Man in the STtaw Hat” could either be the second episode or even the last one, as it’s how Smoker describes Luffy when they meet.

The “Pirates are Coming” and “Tell No Tales” seem very easy to connect to Usopp’s Syrup Village arc. “Eat at Baratie!” and “The Chief and the Chore Boy” match the Baratie beyond the obvious connection. “That only leaves “The Girl with the Sawfish Tattoo” is also obvious for the Arlong Park storyline.

So, we only have “Worst in the East” and “The Man in the Straw Hat” without any truly fitting. As previously mentioned, the latter could be either the first or the last, but “Worst in the East” seems fitting for Arlong. Though, they could also use it as a way to hint at the dangers that Buggy represents. For now, let the speculation begin.

  • ‘One Piece’s Inaki Godoy on the Challenge of Playing Luffy

‘One Piece’s Inaki Godoy on the Challenge of Playing Luffy

Iñaki Godoy may have decided to tackle one of the hardest characters to bring to live-action, the loveable Monkey D. Luffy in Netflix’s live-action One Piece series. There’s a lot of cynicism surrounding these types of adaptations due to the way animation or drawings are generally translated into live-action. With quite a few projects not capturing the spirit of the original, they have a big goal to accomplish, but Godoy seems very aware of that challenge.

In an interview with Decider, Godoy got a chance to sit down and discuss what it’s like to bring this iconic character to life. He highlights the biggest challenge is simply in balancing the two worlds of this kind of pirate-themed adventure with supernatural elements, especially when trying to still ground it as much as possible.

You have this world where there’s Laos pirates and stretchy pirates, and you need to find a way to make that feel real human.

    Iñaki Godoy

He goes on to highlight the biggest challenge being how should he bring someone who is made of rubber to live action. He definitely used existing material as a reference, such as trying to replicate the way Luffy grabs his arm after punching. He definitely tried to look into as many details as he could in bringing the character to life.

How can I translate this rubber-man into live-action? In those cases, I really used the anime and manga for reference and I literally tried to replicate the way this guy [Luffy] fights. I can see how this guy fights. Why wouldn’t I use that as a reference? When he throws a punch and he takes it back, he puts his hand on his bicep or his shoulder. So, if he does that, I should do that too, right? And when he’s about to throw a punch, sometimes he lifts up his leg. I just tried to look for those little details in the original product.

    Iñaki Godoy

Of course, TUDUM’s reveal was just the teaser trailer for the adaptation and we still have some time before we get an actual full look at what to expect. The only villain teased so far was Buggy, who is the only one with his own Devil Fruit power. So, the early season won’t have to juggle that many VFX elements. A lot of focus is already on the portrayal of his stretchy powers and here’s hoping the final product can deliver.

  • Eiichiro Oda Would Send Storyboards for the Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Series

Eiichiro Oda Would Send Storyboards for the Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Series

For quite some time, the Netflix cast has been quite open about the involvement of Eiichiro Oda in the live-action adaptation of the classic manga series. He even stated recently that he has the final say if the show is allowed to release, which highlighted that they are respecting his involvement. Yet, it turns out that he did quite a bit more than one would think.

Netflix’s Director of Original Series Ted Biaselli offered some insight in an interview with The Mary Sue, where they highlight that they have a lot of respect towards Oda. They stated that he would regularly give notes to the series, but even the shape of storyboards. That sounds a lot like how he handled the movies but it would be amazing to get one’s hands on scenes of the live-action crew being showcased in his iconic art style.

He went on to highlight that Oda is “brilliant.”

I don’t throw the word ‘brilliant’ around very often, but he is brilliant. He is a master of the pop culture zeitgeist. He’s well-versed and articulate about music history … He has a playlist in his mind every time he writes.

    Ted Biaselli

They also seemingly made sure to inform Oda of any changes they made early in the scripting phase. Sometimes they would get “Try it out, let’s see” statements that would lead to him getting screenings to evaluate how it turned out. Not just that, it seems he got pretty much everything screened and teased he got “misty” during one scene in the end-of-season screening. This was also highlighted by Emily Rudd, who plays the role of Nami.

They also highlighted his involvement in the casting process. One part was that he actively praised Rudd’s work and spent time with Iñaki Godoy, who took on the role of Luffy. Here’s hoping all his work comes to fruition with this live-action adaptation breaking the curse that others have seemingly had over the years.
