  • How Kingpin is the Perfect Antagonist for ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’

How Kingpin is the Perfect Antagonist for ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’

There are a lot of questions to be asked regarding where Spider-Man will go after the December release of No Way Home. While it’s unknown what the next chapter in Spidey’s cinematic book will be, we do have an answer about where we’ll see him next. According to the recent Disney+ Day event, the future of Spider-Man will be found in his past. Marvel Studios is producing an animated series with the subtitle Freshman Year. It’ll explore the character’s origins in the MCU. The problem is, aside from the likelihood we’ll see yet another iteration of Ben Parker get gunned down in the streets, we know almost nothing about the story’s details. It also opens up the question: who will Spidey face in this prequel series?

Spider-Man Animated Series Coming From Marvel

The parameters set by the cartoon’s place in the Marvel timeline prevent it from showing Peter Parker going head-to-head with any of his major rogues. Spider-Man: Homecoming was fairly clear in its assertion that Michael Keaton‘s Vulture is the most intimidating villain Parker has faced by that point in his career. Plus, context clues would indicate the web-head hadn’t done anything extravagant enough to be more than a YouTube star before Tony Stark discovers him in Civil War. This would mean that, for the show to have a genuine bad guy looming over our freshly made hero, they would have to be a threat that both exists outside of the public eye and appears low on Peter’s danger scale. As such, it’s the perfect time to introduce Wilson Fisk as his main threat.

The Kingpin has made a profession out of appearing moral. There is arguably no character who has mastered the art of discreet villainy like Fisk, who simultaneously runs New York with an iron fist and an entrepreneurial spirit. Fans are, obviously, no strangers to the character, who reached peak popularity in the last decade with a recurring role on Netflix’s acclaimed Daredevil series. It feels like a return to the screen, big or small, is imminent, with live-action MCU shows like Hawkeye and Echo bringing the criminal underworld back to the forefront of Marvel’s storytelling. If the Kingpin of Crime were to be slipped into either, or both, of these projects, placing him and his infamous gangster land into a story that is set nearly a decade earlier would be a wonderful way to retroactively tie that part of the MCU together.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Soundtrack - Kingpin Theme - YouTube

It would be far less than a stretch if whoever takes out Ben is portrayed as being in the employ of Fisk, whose on-the-low activity happened to cross paths with a newly-powered Peter and his altruistic uncle. From there, a misguided, vengeful, and inexperienced Spider-Man may want to hunt down whoever was responsible for the death of his father figure, much like the first act of 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. However, in this story, Parker’s search would lead him directly into the path of “Mr. Big” and his Enforcers, a group of men with wildly individual and specific skill sets like having quick feet and being large (yes, those Enforcers).

There are enough goons, like the Enforcers who worked for Tombstone in The Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon, that could provide an appropriately difficult combat challenge for an untrained Spidey. They might also be small enough not to garner any headlines for the wallcrawler. Skirmishes with Spider-Man may be chalked up to one of the aforementioned YouTube videos. That way, they could be the prominent threat of Freshman Year before it is inevitably revealed who they work for. This plot point would line up with the original Amazing Spider-Man comics, while still leaving room for creative interpretation.

    Montana (Character) - Comic Vine

It should be acknowledged that a member of the Enforcers did appear in Homecoming, played by Logan Marshall-Green as a member of Adrian Toomes’ team and the first person to wield the Shocker gauntlets. However, this version of Jackson Brice has almost nothing in common with his comic namesake Montana. Freshman Year could easily separate those names into two characters. Brice could also be left out of the Enforcers altogether, with another rotating member of their squad taking his place.

Using Kingpin and the Enforcers as antagonists allows for a story that features plenty of Spidey action without ever dipping into “Avengers-level” notoriety. Peter would be able to dig into the mystery of his new opponents and come to terms with a full emotional arc, learning about great power and great responsibility, as well as plant seeds for a connection with the MCU’s underworld without ever actually taking down Kingpin or his empire. The end of the show would fit perfectly into the MCU if it saw the wall-crawler taking down the Enforcers, embracing his newfound heroism, and placing himself on Wilson Fisk’s list of threats for a possible future showdown. All without contradicting anything we’ve seen from the film trilogy so far.

  • New Details on ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Spider-Man and Raid DLC

New Details on ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Spider-Man and Raid DLC

It looks like more information has found its way online on the upcoming November 30th expansion of Marvel’s Avengers. Not only will PlayStation owners get access to a new character in the always popular Spider-Man, but we also will embark on the game’s biggest endgame content offering in the “Discordant Sound” raid. earlier today we got our first footage of the character, but some additional reports have added some curious new details to his addition.

It seems the story will include some new additional NPC characters that may or may not have a story later down the line. His college classmate Liz Allen will be found at the Ant Hill as well as Mark Raxton, who becomes the Molten Man in the comics. Crystal Dynamics played coy on if he might take a villainous turn at some point. While most of the story is told through files, it’s great to see them expand the world.

    Image

Let’s start off with the new playable hero. There has been some debate, especially in IGN’s coverage, about how Spider-Man swings from one location to the next. Forbes’ Paul Tassi has highlighted that it comes quite close to what Insomniac offers which is impressive given the restrictions. He does swing off of “nothing” but that is something one has to suspend disbelief in for any game, as he did the same in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 due to playability being prioritized.

    Image

The character also comes with a new status effect based on his webs. He’s more of a crowd-control and support character in the game. It’s a curious direction but his new web abilities support that direction and make him stand out from the rest. Yes, he is a strong fighter but has the ability to help out the team when they are getting swarmed by enemies, which will be a recurring issue in the upcoming raid. He also has different web shooter variants, which include a charge shot and web bombs. You can even knock enemies against a wall and web them up.

    Image

Speaking of, it seems that the entire raid has been built from the ground up just for this mission. The giant Klaue fight that has been teased for quite some time takes up half of the game, which is an exciting prospect of that giant constantly taking you down. You can also expect traditional bosses and mini-bosses. Communication is key, and while they’re still working on a join-in-progress offering, it’s good to play with people you know well.

  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’: First Look at Spider-Man’s Gameplay

‘Marvel’s Avengers’: First Look at Spider-Man’s Gameplay

It looks like the first gameplay has found its way online of Marvel’s Avengers‘ upcoming Spider-Man DLC. There has been quite a bit of controversy surrounding his addition due to him being PlayStation exclusive, but the fan-favorite has still been on many players’ radar. After a long wait, we finally got a small teaser trailer for his Hero Event, which is not the same as the usual operation, but nothing on his gameplay. Well, the wait is finally over as IGN has shared a new Hands-On Preview of Spider-Man in action and he seems quite promising.

There are comments made regarding the limitations of his swing, but that is a given with this game not being open-world like 2018’s Spider-Man. It’s great that they added a full swinging animation rather than how for example Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 handled it due to the restrictions. Of course, there’s a glass ceiling in the game, but it’s the same with any flying characters. So, it was to be expected, and still great they made it a swinging animation rather than just him switching from web to web.

His combat options certainly stand out, especially his heroics are quite creative. The web bomb looks like a great way to take care of a larger crowd, but a personal favorite will be his Ultimate, the Wrecking Ball. It reminds me of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimension where he would form weapons out of his webs. Of course, there’s the highlight that we don’t get any story missions but it might be a deliberate decision due to his exclusive availability. So, their hands were probably tied in how they approached his DLC. Yet, he is not releasing standalone and is available with the game’s first raid, a complete overhaul of their gear system, and earnable cosmetics. So, while spidey is a more moderate addition, the game is getting a fairly large update.

  • Latest ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Teaser Features Elektro with an Arc Reactor

Latest ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Teaser Features Elektro with an Arc Reactor

There are quite a few interesting details once you start looking at some of the latest TV spots in detail. Marvel Studios is famous for including small references that tie together the Marvel Cinematic Universe in creative ways. Well, it looks like @cosmic_marvel has noticed quite a remarkable detail in one of the latest Spider-Man: No Way Home teasers, as we get our best look yet at Jamie Foxx‘s Elektro. Yet, the big part is that we get a closer look at his new costume and what is probably powering his energy flux, an Iron Man-esque arc reactor.

He’s not the only classic Spider-Man villain getting a Stark upgrade, as we recently learned how Doc Ock gets his new and improved arms in the second trailer release. We can clearly see that the Iron Spider suit is damaged and during the bridge fight he’ll get his upgrade. As such, it might be easy to assume that Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker has one somewhere in his upgraded suit. So, perhaps Doc Ock gets his hands on it and upgrades Elektro with it to make him a bigger threat. It would be similar to what Octavius does in the 2018 Spider-Man game.

Of course, there’s also the chance that he steals it from a Stark lab somewhere. Tony built a giant one underwater to power the city and his suits are probably still around somewhere. Perhaps one was included in a museum, similar to that of Captain America, and he steals it to get a much-needed upgrade. Who knows how little control he has over his powers and that is why he requires the suit upgrade.

  • More ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ TV Spots Offers New Footage of Spidey vs. Doc Ock

More ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ TV Spots Offers New Footage of Spidey vs. Doc Ock

It looks like the Spider-Man: No Way Home marketing is in full force by Sony, as not only was a TV spot found online featuring a closer look at Lizard, we also got two more that offer a closer look at the fight between Spidey and Alfred Molina‘s return as Doc Ock. The first features are quite a bit more of the bridge fight that we saw, as Doc Ock faces off against Spider-Man not realizing it isn’t the one he knows, which is perfectly highlighted by PeteR’s confusion asking who he is. So, it confirms that Peter has no idea that his actions unleashed villains from other universes.

There’s a fun nod with Doc Ock feeling a bit jealous about Spidey also having additional legs of his own. It’s so interesting seeing him come out of the car with them and it’ll be interesting how they might get used in the battle sequence. It gives him a way to counter his multi-limbed enemy but the trailer does tease that his new nemesis will have the advantage at one point in the fight, as we see his Iron Spider suit damaged at one point.

We’ve seen Green Goblin on the same bridge, which makes you wonder if he perhaps is the one that tips the scale in advantage for Molina‘s returning character. We’re only a few weeks away from it finally releasing, so here’s hoping that they’ll keep the rest of the film under lock and key. Who knows what other surprises are still heading our way once the film finally releases.

  • New ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ TV Spot Offers Closer Look at Lizard

New ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ TV Spot Offers Closer Look at Lizard

It looks like they finally kicked off the marketing campaign for Spider-Man: No Way Home, as a new TV spot has been found that teases the upcoming film. Even better, it includes new footage such as more of the teased Happy Hogan sequence and some dialogue from J. Jonah Jameson. Yet, the highlight is that it also gave us our best look yet at The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Lizard, who only had a brief cameo as part of a group shot in the second trailer. Twitter user @spiderbruv shared the footage from the new TV spot.

    https://twitter.com/spiderbruv/status/1462343982105587714

It’s great that they are sticking to the Amazing Spider-Man design, as it makes the character easier recognizable as part of that specific universe. It does open up the question of whether these characters will ever make an appearance later down the line with more comic-accurate designs, but it would make for an interesting conflict for Peter. He knows what happened to them in other dimensions, which means he will try his best to make sure it doesn’t happen yet his Parker Luck might lead them down the same path either way.

We’re still a few weeks away from the official release, and we’ll see how much more footage might find its way online. They’ve pretty much revealed all the villains that’ll take on our favorite wall-crawler. So, they might try to stick to what they have, or else they might spoil too much. Sony is infamous for overmarketing its offerings, which hopefully won’t be the case this time.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Early Forecast Eyeing $500M+ Worldwide Opening

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Early Forecast Eyeing $500M+ Worldwide Opening

We’ve all been wondering if Spider-Man: No Way Home might be the first film to break the current curse the box office is facing with the pandemic. We’re far away from where we were back in 2019 but there’s a lot of hope that it may be our first film to pass the one billion mark at the worldwide box office. Its December release could also add a nice push, as the Star Wars franchise changed its potential and it became a popular hot spot for big releases. Its sentiment rankings are trending ahead of Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It also helped that the first trailer release garnered 355.5 million views within just 24 hours ahead of some of the franchise’s biggest. As such, the long forecast has the film eyeing an international release between $375M to $525M.

That means that domestically, it’s currently on route to near a $200M opening. This is quite noteworthy if you consider that no film has opened past the $100M mark since before the pandemic. For now, its prediction sets it between $135M to $185M. Its critical reception, as seen with Eternals, and general marketing push could push it even further, as Venom: Let There Be Carnage dips into the same target audience and managed to pass expectations by quite a bit.

Keep in mind, these are early predictions that offer a feeling for where the film might potentially be heading. We’re still about a month out and some countries are adding quarantine restrictions once again that could hamper its box office in specific countries. Yet, it‘s eyeing a release in China, which will give the film an extra boost. It seems unlikely it might reach the $2 billion mark but it might be the first one to break through the pandemic.

  • New ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Trailer Reveals the Origin of Doc Ock’s Stark Tech Upgrade

New ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Trailer Reveals the Origin of Doc Ock’s Stark Tech Upgrade

The latest Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer has finally arrived. It offered a clearer look at the returning villains from across the multiverse that’ll make the life of Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker a living hell. Alfred Molina‘s Doc Ock took most of the focus in the earlier promotion and we even had a tease that he might get an upgrade to his iconic arms at some point. Well, the latest trailer may have given us a clear insight into how he got his hands on it and it’s actually been in our voice the entire time.

When we first saw the upgrade, its red and golden lighting made everyone make the connection to Tony Stark’s Iron Man. So, we thought that perhaps he stole technology from Stark Technologies, but the answer may have been simpler than we assumed. It actually was in our face the entire time since the first trailer’s release. When Peter faces off against Doc Ock, he is wearing his Iron Spider suit from Avengers: Infinity War.

In a brief sequence, we see the suit’s nanotech reveal his face. It turns out the reasoning is simple, part of his chest piece was ripped out. So, just like with Iron Man’s suit, it had to adapt, or else he would’ve broken more than just a few ribs. There’s also a great detail of his tie also hanging out as we know he was wearing a suit before he put on the armor.

The way it also spreads in the trailer hints at the fact that it is the same nano-technology. It’s unclear how exactly he manages to take over the technology so the suit adapts to him, but we get a hint that his arms have regained their sentience. So, they might’ve “hacked” into the suit and managed to steal some elements while Peter was wrapped by his arms, which we saw in some of the promotional material. It’ll be interesting to see how his upgrade might tie into the film’s overarching narrative.

  • Tom Holland Open to Pass the Torch in a Miles Morales Film After ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Tom Holland Open to Pass the Torch in a Miles Morales Film After ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Actor Tom Holland has been quite vocal about playing the role of Spider-Man for as long as he can. He’s already been playing the character for six years across three solo films and other franchises, such as Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Not every actor can play a character forever but it seemed like he was certainly open to it. In an interview with GQ, he seemed to have opened up on his future in the role and passed the torch after Spider-Man: No Way Home to someone playing Miles Morales at one point in the MCU’s future.

Maybe it is time for me to move on. Maybe what’s best for Spider-Man is that they do a Miles Morales film. I have to take Peter Parker into account as well, because he is an important part of my life. If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong

The statement is a bit ironic if you consider that Tobey Maguire played the character in Spider-Man 3 when he was around 31 years old and Andrew Garfield was 30 during the production of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2013. So, it’s not too uncommon someone played the character in their 30s. Especially with their rumored return in the upcoming film, perhaps he’s also taking a little jab at the actors for fun.

Still, the potential of Miles Morales taking over the role of Spider-Man isn’t unreasonable. He was briefly teased in a past film, but it would be hasty to rush out a production right after No Way Home. It would be great to take the route from the Insomniac games, as Spidey takes on the mentor role and passes on everything he learned rather than just a quick farewell. We’ll see what they might have planned for the character once the third entry finally releases.
