  • ‘The Last of Us’ Premiere Runtime Revealed

‘The Last of Us’ Premiere Runtime Revealed

Ever since it was announced The Last of Us would receive a television adaptation on HBO, fans have wondered how much of the game’s story could fit into a single season. Past comments made by creator Neil Druckmann and showrunner Craig Mazin have indicated the show will cover pretty much the entirety of the first video game in its initial nine-episode run, with elements from the second game included as well, and the marketing for the show thus far seemed to confirm this. With only nine episodes to pull the whole of The Last of Us off, it’s natural that anticipatory viewers wonder how long each first season installment will be.

An early schedule listing from HBO Latino has revealed the first episode will be a whopping 85 minutes in length. As discovered by YouTuber DomTheBomb, the January 15th premiere event is set to run almost feature-length, giving audiences a fair amount of time to become acquainted with the characters and world of The Last of Us.

HBO is known for producing series with large-scale episodes, with Game of Thrones famously averaging 72 minutes per episode in its final season. While it’s neither confirmed nor likely that every episode of the upcoming Naughty Dog adaptation will be an hour and a half long, The Last of Us following Game of Thrones‘ example means there should be plenty of space for Druckmann and Mazin to retell the tale of Joel and Ellie. The original video game takes about 15 hours to complete, and nine increments of 90 minutes would result in a 13-hour season. Not as far off as people might have expected.

The Last of Us premieres on HBO on January 15th.

  • ‘What If..?’ Composer on Adapting to Each Episode’s Genre

‘What If..?’ Composer on Adapting to Each Episode’s Genre

We’re still anxiously awaiting any news on what Marvel Studios’ next season of What If…? has in store for us. Besides the brief tease from San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios has gone quiet on their animation front. Wild rumors have circulated that didn’t help matters much, but it seems we have something to carry us over in an interview by Laura Karpman on what it’s like working on the animated series, and it looks like she’s having a blast.

Oh, I love it. The thing about What If…? that’s amazing is that every episode is different, so you’re kind of starting all over again. So every episode is its own little world or a big world. And so it really is… It’s doing these series of little films, and it’s a pleasure. It’s a great gig

    Laura Karpman

Karpman is no stranger to working with Marvel Studios, as she’s recently been involved with Ms. Marvel and even next year’s film release, The Marvels. While details on those projects aren’t divulged, she does tease how she had to adapt to each episode’s unique theming while also adhering to the scores that inspired them, if it was a Captain America or Guardians of the GAlaxy-focused episode.

So it’s one of those things where big decisions have to be made in every episode. And in fact, it’s the opposite of prescriptive. Although there are materials that we can draw from if we choose to. So there are preexisting materials. If I want to use some of Ludwig [Göransson]’s music or Alan Silvestri music, or anybody who’s worked in the MCU, we think about how do we want to do it. And I only have one kind of monster rule for myself when it comes to using the great themes written by the composers, and that is that I don’t actually ever look at the sheet music. I do it all by ear because I think if it filters through my brain somehow, then it’ll feel like the show. Then it’ll feel like I’ve had my influence rather than just really drawing exactly from what was written. And I think it’s better for the show too, because then it feels somewhat new.

    Laura Karpman

It definitely sounds like the series gave her a fun challenge while flexing her creative muscle. There’s something unique about their first animated project that is steeped in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history. Now, we only need to wait for an official release date.

  • Ethan Hawke on a Potential Return to the MCU in the Future

Ethan Hawke on a Potential Return to the MCU in the Future

Marvel Studios has always had one issue: they tend to kill their villains after just one movie. They have made an effort to move away from that trend but there are scenarios of actors that may only have interest for a limited time in a villainous role, such as Moon Knight‘s Arthur Harrow played by Ethan Hawke. In an interview with The Playlist, it sadly seems like he’s not likely to return anytime soon.

I really don’t know. There are so many things I want to do [outside of Marvel]. With the pandemic lingering around in the rearview mirror a little bit—knock on wood—I feel drawn to doing a play. I find that top of my mind again as I walk down the street and think, ‘When am I going to get back on the stage again?’ Because that always feels healthy. It turns me on, and it turns my brain on in a way.

    Ethan Hawke

He also goes on to discuss the difference between being involved in film and television to what he hopes to accomplish by exploring play. Hawke definitely looks quite excited to enjoy that theater experience.

There’s so much energy in the film community about commercial interests; it’s just so omnipresent. How did the film do? What’s it going to make financially? How’s it going to connect with an audience? And there’s just something wonderful as a storyteller, as you said, not to be concerned with that. Let’s just kind of touch the true flame of it. Let’s get some people in a room together and sing them a song or tell ’em a story. The theater constantly reorients my brain, so hopefully, that’s a thing sometime soon.

    Ethan Hawke

While it would be a shame not to have Hawke back, Moon Knight did end in a way that could keep the door open for him to return but also make sure that if he’s not interested it was only a one-time venture for the actor.

  • Ethan Hawke Reflects on How Oscar Isaac Inspired Him to Join ‘Moon Knight’

Ethan Hawke Reflects on How Oscar Isaac Inspired Him to Join ‘Moon Knight’

Moon Knight was one of Marvel Studios’ most ambitious projects. While it had its own struggles like any other project, there was something special about just how dedicated everyone was to the project. It even managed to bring some talented actors into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke. Hawke had a chance to reflect on how he was inspired to join the franchise, and it was all Isaac.

And I saw a real opportunity with Oscar Isaac for Moon Knight. There was a fire inside Oscar about that project. He really wanted to play that part. And that’s a good sign. With Oscar, I could tell he was going to do his damnedest to give an outstanding performance inside a blockbuster [laughs].”

    Ethan Hawke

He goes on to highlight how they approached it and even praised Marvel for how “they love actors” and just how “very generous” they are, highlighting something that has been always debated online.

And I thought, ‘Well, hell, I’d like to help him try to do that.’ It was just two actors in the middle of a big swashbuckling event piece. We could at least try to do what we do inside of it. And I really had a great time, to be honest. The exciting thing about the people at Marvel is that they love actors. They’re very generous towards actors, and they really understand that if there’s a likely high correlation—if an actor is really turned on to give an outstanding performance— the chances of the audience responding well to that are very high. What we don’t like is audience members are watching somebody phone it in, right?”

    Ethan Hawke

There’s something nice to Hawke‘s comments and it seems that the experience was also worth his time. It’s also great to see how open the studio is to embracing the actor’s involvement with their projects.

  • ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Has a Big Advantage Over Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Has a Big Advantage Over Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’

As Charlie Cox makes the media rounds to hype his upcoming Netflix spy thriller, Treason, he’s spending quite a bit of time answering questions all about another project of his: Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series Daredevil: Born Again. The highly-anticipated and ambitious 18-episode series will see Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil take the lead in a project for the first time since bringing the character to the MCU and for the first time since Netflix’s Daredevil was canceled following its third season.

In the months since the new series was announced, Cox has made it clear that Born Again won’t be a continuation of the Netflix series, calling it a “whole new deal and indicating that Marvel Studios One Above All, Kevin Feige, “has been very clear about it being Season 1, not a Season 4.” He’s also made it clear that fans should expect the Disney Plus series to “tell some of the stories over and over again, in the same way that they do in the comics,” including, potentially, the character’s origin story making it very clear that Marvel Studios has plans to put their own, distinct mark on the character in order to set it apart from the Netflix series that was made without input from them.

While speaking to Metro UK, Cox related that one big advantage the Disney Plus series will have over the Netflix one is that by being set within the MCU, it has “opened to door” for potential appearances of literally thousands of comic book characters that could never have appeared on Daredevil.

I don’t know anything. I haven’t read anything from any scripts. So I don’t know. I have no idea. But the only thing that’s fun going forward for the Daredevil show is that of course when we were on Netflix, we didn’t have the opportunity to really have the crossovers other than the characters that we knew we had in that Netflix Marvel world.

    Charlie Cox

For Cox, the possibility of characters crossing over into Daredevil: Born Again carries a lot of excitement with it because it brings the experience of the show closer to that of reading Daredevil comics, of which Cox is a big fan.

Now that door is wide open to all sorts of possibilities and that, for me, as someone who’s become a great fan of the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s really exciting that that door is open and that we can have cameos from other characters that we couldn’t before.

    Charlie Cox

Of course, unlike the Netflix series, Daredevil comics aren’t all dark, bloody and brooding. In fact, in the comics, Daredevil often finds himself squaring off with ridiculous villains with ridiculous gimmicks. As it turns out, one such character, who Cox refers to as a “ludicrous villain”, is high on the actor’s wishlist to appear in Born Again.

The one I occasionally joke about – but I probably shouldn’t, because I don’t envision a world where it’s actually realistic that he shows up in our show – but I’ve always thought it’d be funny if Stilt-Man showed up. It’s such a ludicrous superhero, such a ludicrous villain that I just think it’d be funny if we found a way of doing that without it massively denting our credibility as an authentic truthful superhero show.

    Charlie Cox

Should Cox’s advocacy for Stilt-Man result in the character actually appearing in Daredevil: Born Again, the beloved actor will have played a major role in fulfilling the childhood dreams of many a fan of Daredevil comics. Charlie Cox, Man of the People.

  • New Animated ‘Avatar’ Series Rumored for 2025

New Animated ‘Avatar’ Series Rumored for 2025

Earth, wind, air, and fire. These are the four elements that drive storytelling in the animated Avatar franchise, which began with 2005’s critically-acclaimed series The Last AirbenderFor a long time, that series (and its lesser-loved film adaptation) was all fans had, until a sequel series titled Avatar: The Legend of Korra launched in 2012 and helped respawn interest in the franchise. Since then, multiple prequel novels and comic continuations have been produced, with several more films, video games, and another attempt at live-action on the way. Yet, despite all the incredible content, there’s always been one thing fans have hoped for more than anything else – another full-length show. Now, according to a rumor from Avatar News, it would appear they might just get it.

Most materials set in this world, created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, revolve around one of the titular “Avatars” – a bender with the unique ability to manipulate all four elements, who is considered the protector and unifying force of all people and spirits in existence. The Avatar is a singular being who reincarnates with each new generation and is born cyclically throughout the four fictional elemental nations. The Last Airbender told the story of Avatar Aang, who was, obviously, an airbender, while The Legend of Korra told the story of his successor, a waterbender named, obviously, Avatar Korra. If Avatar News is correct, it would seem Avatar Studios is now working on a second sequel series that would take place after Korra, with the intent to release in 2025 and follow the life of the earthbending Avatar who would be born after Korra’s death.

At this time, there is no other information regarding who the next Avatar would be. However, based on the average time jumps between each previous Avatar, it can be surmised that the Earthbending Avatar would live in the Avatar equivalent of modern times. The Last Airbender was set in an ancient world, and The Legend of Korra took place during an Industrial Revolution. Hopefully, Avatar Studios are cooking up an interesting take on the technological landscape viewers live in now, and hopefully, this rumor has some credibility to it. It’s definitely something to be wishful for.

  • Charlie Cox Ready for More Fun with She-Hulk in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

Charlie Cox Ready for More Fun with She-Hulk in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

Charlie Cox‘s work as Matt Murdock and Daredevil in the Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law put an all-new, all-different spin on the character. For fans of the Netflix show, the carefree and funny Daredevil was a far cry from the morosity of the character in that series that they didn’t readily accept; for Cox, it was an enjoyable turn and one, it seems, he might like to revisit again.

Following his brief appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Murdock is expected to next show up in Echo before getting back in the business of being the main focus of a series in Daredevil: Born Again, currently set to stream in 2024. Born Again, which was announced as one, 18-episode series starts production in February 2023 and is rumored to have its fair share of cameos and guest stars. In a new interview with Metro UK, Cox revealed that one guest star he’d like to see make the cut is She-Hulk star Tatiana Maslany.

I’ve made it no secret that I’m a huge fan of Tatiana’s and the fun we had on She-Hulk was some of the best fun I’ve had as that character,” said Cox. “I thought she was amazing as Jennifer Walters,” he continued, “and I would be a huge… certainly an advocate of her showing up in our show if she’s free and available and willing and all of those things. So I would love for that to happen. I have no idea if that is possible.”

The two certainly shared a fun, onscreen chemistry in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and seeing Jen step into Murdock’s world of Hell’s Kitchen would present the opportunity for an intriguing contrast to their time together in San Francisco. As Cox points out, the possibility of such an appearance isn’t really up to him and while Maslany’s future in the MCU isn’t in question when her character appears next absolutely is. However, with Born Again filming for the majority of 2023, maybe the actress can find some time in her schedule to fit a few days of filming in.

  • Daredevil Will Not Appear in ‘Deadpool 3’

Daredevil Will Not Appear in ‘Deadpool 3’

It would seem audiences will have to wait a little longer for the Man Without Fear to meet the Merc With a Mouth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Earlier this month, during a guest spot at German Comic-Con in Dortmund, Daredevil star Charlie Cox stated he’d love to see his character appear in the next Deadpool film, which is currently set to feature Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprising their iconic roles in a wild, time-hopping adventure. The actor explained that, with the darker nature of his upcoming solo series Daredevil: Born Again, he felt that a cross-over with the Deadpool franchise would be both fun and possible. Unfortunately, though, a recent interview with TechRadar has thrown some cold water on fans’ hopes that this might actually come to fruition.

When asked about his previous comments, Cox decided to set the record straight. He had only been pondering possibilities, and as of now, he’s “definitely” not in Deadpool 3:

Oh god, what did I say again? Oh yeah, I said that in Germany, didn’t I? I can tell you now, I’m definitely not in Deadpool 3.

    Charlie Cox

Cox made his MCU debut as Matt Murdock last year, making an important cameo as the lawyer of Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He reappeared not long after in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Disney+, acting as a courtroom rival and part-time lover of Tatiana Maslany‘s Jennifer Walters, and wearing the Daredevil suit into action for the first time since the original Daredevil series ended its run in 2018. Now, fans are rabid to know who they might see him team up with next. Daredevil and Deadpool have a history of interacting in the comics, but it looks like a live-action adaptation of their complicated relationship is not currently in the cards at Marvel Studios.

  • Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s ‘Ahsoka’ Role Reportedly Revealed

Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s ‘Ahsoka’ Role Reportedly Revealed

In January of 2022, Mary Elizabeth Winstead was reported to have joined the cast of the upcoming Star Wars streaming series Ahsoka. At the time of the report, Winstead’s role was unknown and has been kept a secret as the series went through production. Now a new report claims to have revealed who Winstead is playing and it’s a MAJOR character from a fan-favorite animated series making her live-action debut.

According to Bespin Bulletin, Winstead is playing Twi’lek General Hera Syndulla. One of the lead characters of Star Wars Rebels, Syndulla was one of the leaders of the Rebellion in it’s early days and one if its great heroes. Ahsoka is set 5 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, which places it roughly 14 years after Hera’s first appearance in Rebels.

Ahsoka will find the titular Jedi reunited with the surviving members of the crew of Syndulla’s ghost as they search for Grand Admiral Thrawn and their friend Ezra Bridger. The series is currently set to stream on Disney Plus sometime in 2023.
