EXCLUSIVE: ‘GREASE’ Director Randal Kleiser Helming Janis Joplin Biopic ‘PEARL’

Grease director Randal Kleiser will bring the tragic story of Janis Joplin to the big screen in a currently undated film titled Pearl. Casting is currently under way with an expected mid-August start for the film which will work off a script from Gregory Lee Kenyon.

Janis Joplin 'Pearl Sessions' Definitive Two-Disc Edition Arriving In April

Several Joplin biopics have been in the works over the last decade with none ever making their way to the screen. Kleiser’s version will portray Joplin as an “untrammeled force of nature” and explore the “crippling insecurity” that lead to the drug and alcohol problems that lead to her death from an overdose at 27 years old. The film’s title, Pearl, shares the title of her second and final album, which she finished recording just prior to her death.

‘SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME’ Set Photo Reveals a Key Location in the Threequel

Principal photography on Spider-Man: No Way Home has wrapped but there are still bread crumbs to be found in the Atlanta area. Today the Twitter account of Houston Coley posted an interesting prop that was left behind on set:

    https://twitter.com/Blockbustedpod/status/1379182613890539533?s=19

The prop combines the iconic Statue of Liberty with the less-than-equally-but-still-pretty-damn-iconic shield of Captain America. The shield’s legacy is currently front and center in Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, so seeing it front and center on this prop in a film that should chronologically follow the series is interesting! It’s great to see NYC’s most recognizable landmark make its way into this film and we’ve been told that it will serve as the backdrop for a KEY scene in the film, so this is more than just a throw-away prop! Great catch, Houston!

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on December 17, 2021!

  • Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s ‘LOKI’ Role Revealed

    Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s ‘LOKI’ Role Revealed

Marvel Studios had been hoping to work with Gugu Mbatha-Raw for quite some time but things never quite lined up. The stars aligned and Mbatha-Raw landed a major role in the upcoming Disney Plus streaming series, Loki, and what a role it is. According to Disney, the actress is playing a character named Judge Renslayer and that almost certainly makes her Ravonna Renslayer, the great love interest of Kang the Conqueror!

    Image

The news comes via Fandango’s Managing Editor, Erik Davis, and seems like a pretty big reveal considering who she is. We’ve heard rumors that Jonathan Majors’ Kang would appear in Loki and if this Renslayer is indeed Ravonna, it erases almost all doubt that he’ll show up. The two have had a long and twisted history over the years as Kang’s love went mostly unrequited (and she may have even killed him once). Fans might be more familiar with Ravonna from her role in Kang’s arc on Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes where she was kept in stasis due to injuries sustained from the temporal anomaly caused by Captain America’s reemergence into the timeline. While she spent her entire time there on the shelf, be sure that Ravonna can handle herself and has proven to be arguably Kang’s most persistent and competent foe over the years. We’ll have to wait to see if Gugu’s character is Ravonna or a descendant or ancestor (time stuff, you know) but this seems like it could be a major ongoing role in the MCU.

  • ‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’ Episode 3 Easter Eggs and References

‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’ Episode 3 Easter Eggs and References

Episode 3 of Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier delivered on what we’ve all loved about the series so far. Fans got some intense fight scenes, some shit got blown up and it continued to give us character development, although in smaller doses this week. It also gave fans a nice basket full of Easter eggs and some references that could give some clues about where things might go in the future. Obviously, the rest of this article will go into spoiler territory, so if you haven’t watched it yet get out of here and come back when you have.

That’s Baron Zemo To You, Peasant

In what comes as a bit of a surprise to Sam and much of the audience who may not be familiar with the character, the episode reveals that Zemo, who was presented simply as a solider when we met him in Captain America: Civil War, is a Baron. In the comics, Helmut Zemo was the 13th Baron in a long line of Barons Zemo dating back to the late 15th century. While Zemo is on the side of our heroes for now (although our heroes aren’t acting very hero-y), it’s hard to imagine Marvel Studios brought him back to make him an honorary Avenger. We know that prior to the pandemic, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was set to film some scenes at Ploskovice Castle in Prague, a location that, as we speculated here, could be the perfect stand-in for the ancestral Castle Zemo. It’s unclear if they ever made it there to film or not, but this looks like the kind of place Zemo could head at the end of the series to plot and plan and even have a few friends get together…

Was that a Snap Wilson Reference?

marvel falconould In a line that could have easily been missed (and also led to a great response by Zemo), we got what seemed like a callback to the now retconned past of Sam Wilson in the comics. At one point in comic book history, Sam Wilson was actually a mobster, pimp and drug lord who went by Snap Wilson. A weird choice to be sure, since at this time, Sam had previously been established as a social worker who became a hero; fortunately, Marvel Comics saw fit to erase this from Sam’s official history in 2015 by writing it out of canon as false memories implanted by Red Skull via the Cosmic Cube.

    Smiling Tiger

    Smiling Tiger (Character) - WorldofBlackHeroes

Once fans became aware that the series would be taking us to Madripoor, speculation about what characters associated with the lawless land we’d see and, quite frequently, Madripoor big-timer Tyger Tiger was among them. Looks like you could give yourself partial credit on that one because you got the last part right. Episode 3 gave us a reference to a much more obscure Marvel Comics character, Conrad Mack, aka Smiling Tiger. Mack was part of a really interesting group called the Folding Circle who had quite a powerful influence on Madripoor. Mack was also a part of the Thunderbolts Army during the Civil War arc.

    The Princess Bar

As you first saw in our exclusive set photos, the set that was Lowtown, Madripoor was essentially a giant Easter egg. This episode showcased quite a few of the ones from those set photos,  including The Brass Monkey, but the best Easter egg of the episode came when Sam’s eyes took us to the neon sign for The Princess Bar. We never made our way inside and that’s probably for the best. The Princess Bar, owned by the aforementioned Tyger Tiger, is one of Lowtown’s seedier joints and is oft-visited by Wolverine when he’s doing business in Madripoor as Patch.

Selby…like the Mutant Liberation Front One?

While the episode didn’t give us Wolverine, we did meet a character who is likely based on another mutant. Zemo leads Bucky and Sam to Madripoor to meet with a fence named Selby. In the comics, there are a few Selbys, but the only one that would make any sense here is one that was a part of the Mutant Liberation Front founded by Stryfe. Obviously this one didn’t have much in common with the comic character and won’t be around for any MLF activities in the future, but there you go!

    Wilfred Nagel

This one is awesome and convoluted and just plain crazy. In the episode, we meet Dr. Wilfred Nagel and learn that after working for Hydra on the Winter Soldier project in the early 1990s, was brought into the fold with the CIA where he used the blood of Isaiah Bradley to ultimately recreate a new version of the Super Soldier Serum. We first told you about Nagel’s appearance in the film right here and speculated that his inclusion might lead to the inclusion of Isaiah and Elijah Bradley, but upon seeing the episode there could be a LOT more to it.

10 Most Paused Moments In Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies – Page 3

In the comics, Nagel’s story was a little different as he worked on Project Rebirth with Dr. Erskine and picked up the work after Erskine’s death. What’s interesting is that while working there, he went by the codename “Dr. Reinstein”, a name we’ve seen in association with the Weapons Plus program in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. It’s totally retconnable for Nagel to have been working for the US Department of Defense via the CIA as Reinstein. What’s even more interesting is that as a CIA agent herself, Sharon Carter would have potentially had access to information about Nagel’s work, making it quite the coincidence that they are both on Madripoor together.

There are some other nice nods here. Some are obvious, such as Zemo’s mask and the appearance of Ayo (whose appearance we first speculated on here and here) and some less subtle like Sharon briefly battling with a weapon similar to her comic book weapon of choice. This episode definitely highlighted the globe-trotting espionage that we’ve been waiting for and, in doing so, gave fans a lot to think about going forward.

  • ‘Marvel Studios Assembled’ Sets Return Date for ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’

‘Marvel Studios Assembled’ Sets Return Date for ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’

Marvel Studios behind-the-scenes series, Assembled, has set the date for its next episode. According to Disney + Espana, an episode taking a look at the making of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is set for April 30th, one week after the series concludes its run.

    https://twitter.com/DisneyPlusES/status/1377283346208808970?s=19

The first episode of the ongoing series gave fans a 60-minute look into the making of WandaVision and we can probably expect something similar here for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. As it stands, Marvel Studios looks to have episodes planned for Loki, Black Widow and Hawkeye. Given how well the WandaVision episode was received by fans, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the series expand beyond the original plan and continue giving fans the opportunity to peek behind the curtain of their productions.

No Seriously, There’s Going to Be Carnage Eventually, We Promise: Sony Bumps ‘VENOM’ Sequel By One Week

Despite having wrapped production prior to the pandemic, Sony’s follow-up to 2017’s Venom has yet to be seen and, yesterday, got just a little further away. After originally being set for an October 2020 release, Venom: Let There Be Carnage moved to June 2021 before recently getting pushed back to September 17, 2021. Now, the studio has slightly adjusted the date again, moving the Tom Hardy vehicle to September 24, 2021.

The sequel is set to see Hardy reprise his role as Eddie Brock/Venom with Woody Harrelson back in an expanded role as serial killer Cletus Kasaday. The film was directed by Andy Serkis, who recently teased we might get a first look at the project sometime soon.

  • ‘RICK AND MORTY’ Season 5 Premiere Revealed Along with Trailer

‘RICK AND MORTY’ Season 5 Premiere Revealed Along with Trailer

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s Emmy-winning animated series, Rick and Morty, will return to Adult Swim on June 20th, just a little over a year since the Season 4 finale first aired. The day has been dubbed “Rick and Morty Day” by the network promising “a megadose of access and content of all things Rick and Morty” on what they’re calling a Multiverse Holiday. The announcement came with a fresh, new Season 5 trailer which you can view below.

Season 4 ended on arguably the series’ most down note to date as Rick owned up to the fact that he is a terrible father after realizing he had become unclear on which Beth was his daughter and which was a clone of her that he created. The Season 5 trailer promises a return to the kind of irreverent and intelligent humor fans of the show have come to expect and will certainly see Rick come to terms with the consequences of his mulitversal hijinks.

  • Review: ‘GODZILLA vs. KONG’

    Review: ‘GODZILLA vs. KONG’

Legendary Pictures has been developing Godzilla vs. Kong as the main event of its Monsterverse since 2015. The fourth film in their shared universe benefits from the build-up that began in 2014’s Godzilla and the mythology and that was developed and shared with audiences in Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). The film delivers on monster-on-monster action in a big way, ties up some of the series’ ongoing mysteries and would be a wild ride in cinemas (I watched it in my living room and the big action scenes certainly lost some magic on my TV). It also makes an all-too-common mistake in recent monster movies, forces an unnecessarily convoluted plot device into the mix and maybe relied a bit too much on bringing back characters from previous entries. However, with realistic expectations set about what you’re sitting down to watch Godzilla vs. Kong is incredibly fun, crazy as hell and fans who have been waiting on seeing the two titans take each other one will find themselves with a permagrin during the final act’s major action sequence.

Godzilla Vs. Kong's Director Shares Some Of The Sweet Easter Eggs Fans Have Started Picking Up On - CINEMABLEND

Godzilla vs. Kong‘s main plot centers on Monarch looking to relocate Kong, who is looking much grayer and a little larger than when we last saw him in Kong: Skull Island which was set in 1973. Rebecca Hall’s Dr. Andrews is convinced by an old colleague, Alexander Skarsgard’s Dr. Lind, that the best bet for Kong is a Hollow Earth access point in Antarctica where he might find himself not only a new home but also perhaps others of his kind. Unfortunately, Lind’s strings are being pulled by the “visionary” head honcho of Apex Cybernetics, Walter Simmons, who hopes to harness the unique energy of Hollow Earth to power his pet project which he believes will solve the Earth’s Titan problem. When former Apex employee and Titan conspiracy podcast host Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry) manages to stumble onto Simmons secret during an inexplicable attack by Godzilla on an Apex location, his podcast catches the attention of Millie Bobby Brown’s Madison Russell, who survived the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters and apparently needed to be back for contractual reasons because I can’t come up with one other decent reason why she’s here. When Drs. Andrew and Lind move Kong, Godzilla’s Titan sense starts tingling and it’s on.

We’ve seen a good bit of the film’s first big action sequence which takes place at sea. Given that it’s the film’s warm up bout for the two Titans, it’s a good bit of fun, if not a bit too short, but it makes it pretty clear that Kong is going to have a hard time standing up King of the Monsters. The film takes a few big swings here, even taking the two Titans underwater for a prolonged sequence and, for the most part, it works. We get some creative and intense action here that whets our appetites for what we know is yet to come.

The most satisfying part of the film for me comes when it makes good on the Hollow Earth theories that have run throughout the series. A good portion of the second act is devoted to it and it really feels like time well spent both because it makes good on the promises of previous films, gives Kong a way to even the tables and bit and allows for an already interesting mythology to be built upon should Legendary hope to move forward with it.

What Is That Battle Axe Kong Uses To Repel Godzilla's Atomic Breath? The Toys Give Us A Hint | Geek Culture

The film’s final action sequence, which includes an interloper that we’ve all seen coming since the first trailer hit, delivers on everything fans of the franchise and the genre could have asked for. For the most part here, director Adam Wingard was smart enough to take the people off the board and let the Titans do their thing. Kong uses the cityscape of Hong Kong to his advantage in some really fun and creative ways and the destruction caused by Kong, Godzilla and Mechazilla is next level. If you’re going to theaters to eat your popcorn, watch monsters hit each other and see shit get broken, there’s absolutely no way you’ll walk away unhappy.

And since that’s what this movie is, the shortcomings seem like nitpicks. While the people are out of the way in the final act, Godzilla vs. Kong goes a little too Transformers early on by forcing Brown and her friend, played by Julian Dennison, into the mix. Sure they expose the mustache-twirling bad guy to the audience and find a way to have an impact on the final fight, but that’s all less time we spend watching Godzilla fight Kong which is, you know, what we want in a Godzilla vs. Kong film.

As a teacher grading on 1-4 standards-based scale, this is a solid 3 for me. That’s not a traditional scale so it’s not a 75%; this film meets the expectations for the target it set. It’s supposed to be a monster movie about monsters fighting each other and when that happens, it checks all the boxes. It doesn’t seem like a film I immediately want to revisit or even one that I’ll remember when I make my year-end list of my top 10 films, but it’s a banging good time and I think it’s going to do killer numbers at the box office, hopefully encouraging Legendary to keep the Monsterverse alive!
